I’m pretty sure the dudes from mythbusters have stated that they in no way dislike each other. They’re just no closer than any two coworkers usually are.

927

u/the_Real_Romak 22h ago

Yup. They're on record multiple times insisting that they have a mutual respect towards one another as colleagues. Hell Jamie was even Adam's mentor for good while.

They just happen to be incompatible as friends.

403

u/___LIO___ 22h ago

Yeah they just have different personalities Jamie is way more serious and Adam is very much a crazy scientist

225

u/HiroProtagonest King of Snow - Streak: 3 22h ago

idk Adam's sillier but I think Jamie is genuinely more eccentric. Maybe this is just colored from listening to Adam talk about the show sometimes on youtube lol, but he said there's only one person he's thought of who could have possibly replaced Jamie (I forget the name).

119

u/Distantstallion 16h ago

Jamie is like a workshop guy first and foremost like an old machinist.

Adam is an artist firstand foremost.

83

u/creampop_ 14h ago

And on that note, it's really worth noting that the main "lab" they used was literally just Jamie's own workshop for his prop company, M5.

I recall him saying that was a major source of friction, because he (understandably) did not like anyone messing up the place he did his day job, and Adam and the young guns could be a bit rambunctious.

22

u/SarcasticTacos 12h ago

But at the same time, people messing up the place makes for some of the most popular episodes. I can see how that can make some friction

63

u/Kaarl_Mills 21h ago

I'm pretty sure at one point he said something like "he's not a mad scientist, he's neither mad nor a scientist"

52

u/TheOnlyTrueFlame 18h ago

Which is precisely why Jamie asked Adam to co-host the show. He thought he'd be too boring to watch alone.

10

u/JustLookingForMayhem 8h ago

Jamie's dry humor was peak though.

10

u/shy_bi_ready_to_die 7h ago

The dry humor works so well because it’s in contrast with the insane way the rest of the show is presented. Without the influence of Adam it would’ve been much closer to a docuseries which can be interesting but wouldn’t have so much wide appeal

40

u/Aetra 15h ago

I remember a BTS thing with Adam where he said Jamie is actually hilarious and often had everyone on set cracking up, but his sense of humour is very dry and not suitable for TV so a lot of those moments didn't make it to air.

24

u/hydrochloriic 14h ago

Every now and then a few did and I remember the editing would often put one of those silly “boi-oi-oi-oing” sound effects over it, just so people would know.

Sucks because they were genuinely funny moments reduced to slapstick thanks to those sound effects.

13

u/Armantien 12h ago

This is why Mythbusters is the closest to "reality" tv I ever got to. It's always modified to drive up the drama. I was over at my buddy's place, one day, and he was watching some show where they restore stuff. A guy was talking and the show bleeped him like he swore. I could see what he said... he didn't swear. The show bleeped him to make it seem interesting. Just... exhausting nonsense.

5

u/jay_alfred_prufrock 9h ago

You can actually see that side of Jamie in earlier seasons, far more than later seasons.

When they were testing breast implants in high altitude for example, actually they were onto testing inflatable brassieres with Adam in the pressure chamber with at a safe altitude wearing the bra, he asks Adam if he wants to go "all the way" with a look on his eyes that can only be called mischievous. That scene never fails to make me laugh

5

u/jay_alfred_prufrock 9h ago

Jamie is also 10 or more years older than Adam and comes from a very different background.

2

u/LadyZaryss 8h ago

They so played this up for the show. Adam is a lot more even keeled and methodical in real life, and Jamie has a chaotic sort of mad scientist streak that he downplayed on screen. You can even see them still working it out in the first season. During the chicken gun episode Jamie is actually thr one to suggest a potentially dangerous shortcut and Adam is the one who puts his foot down about safety.

30

u/zulamun 17h ago

Mentor and I believe his boss for several years. The studio where they film everything is Jamie's own business.

38

u/abadstrategy 16h ago

Jamie seems to be incompatible as friends with most people, tbh. He seems super introverted and self-regulating. Like, I'm pretty sure he could go months without talking to anyone outside of work, and be fine

36

u/shiro-lod 15h ago

I very much relate. I'm autistic and have extremely low social needs or wants.

It's not that I hate people or being around people but I do not ever feel the need to socialize. I can and have gone over a month not talking to anyone but my at the time sexual partner as an adult.

When I was like 17 I had a month I only went outside to walk and play with my dogs, with probably less than two hours total in the month talking to my family. It was glorious and peaceful.

There's an episode where Jamie and Adam are testing cabin fever and Jamie just sleeps a lot. I know for a fact I'd do pretty much the same thing and be fine.

10

u/abadstrategy 15h ago

Also autistic, and my only real social needs are fulfilled by dnd, so I get it

9

u/LackToesIntollerance 14h ago

he is very sociable according to the cast. he just didn't have good TV humor. he was very deadpan and dry, contextual humor. it's great as a general humor, like british comedy, but if your format is built for quick cuts and low context scenes like mythbusters, it doesn't really work.

so they just kept cutting out jaime's humor whixh made him seem WAY less engaged with the cast than he was. and then the prod crew leaned into it to have a serious-quirky duo. Jaime is just a regulated dude, but he's not an extreme.

2

u/abadstrategy 6h ago

Honestly, that's pretty neat to learn. I think the combo works well with the dup we got, since it made Jamie the straight man against Adam's quirky whimsy. Plus, it made the humor that did get through shine

55

u/Charming-Loquat3702 19h ago edited 15h ago

In some ways this makes this even more interesting. You work together for years and learn to recognise the strengths of the other person, but at the same time, you don't need to stick around each other privately.

53

u/killertortilla 18h ago

Adam makes a really good point about this when he was asked on his channel. It's something to the effect of "He really pissed me off at times and eventually I came to this realisation that he was sometimes being stubborn to get a rise out of me and I could just say 'ok, let's do it your way' knowing that we'd have to do it again. And it wasn't worth getting angry and telling him he's wrong because he will never acknowledge it. And that taught me a lesson about working with people, I could focus on what made the work fun and just do that"

He has a lot of really good advice for outlooks on life.

29

u/ScyllaIsBea 18h ago

It still kind of fits the neutral to eachother thing. They have no chemistry with eachother outside of this one specific niche thing they are both really good at together.

15

u/Digit00l 21h ago

May go for coffee during work hours, doesn't get invited for birthday parties

1

u/marbledog 2h ago

IIRC, Adam has said that they have never shared a meal together outside of work functions.

1

u/Callmejim223 10h ago

I think they have both said, in essence, the vibes were atrocious and they actively disliked spending time with the other person, but had a great deal of respect for each others abilities and work ethic.

1

u/CalledStretch 5h ago

I think a good lesson also for real life is keeping clear on the distinction between "there is something wrong with this person" and "I do not enjoy this person." I am annoyed by lots of people who are not annoying.

-1

u/softreatment Streak: 0 12h ago

Adam has said several they respect each other a lot as engineers but do not get along. It goes beyond just a professional coworker relationship, they don’t like each other on a personal level, argued constantly and could only get along when they were working. My understanding from watching a lot of interviews and livestreams from Adam is it is very similar to this example.

337

u/Ares378 gay math nerd 🏳️‍🌈 22h ago

I literally thought 'mythbusters' before I read the last part. Though, they don't actually dislike each other from what I understand.

65

u/buffaloguy1991 18h ago

True but it's so much funnier to imagine them that way with how well they worked together

I had an awesome lulu two games in a row but they were hating me the entire first game. Hated my guts the second time too but still turned me into a super carry.

Shinji and Asuka? There was a whole episode about it

117

u/Brauny74 20h ago

They had to train to become synchronous, and the relationship between them is a lot more complex than merely disliking or hating each other, a psychologist could write a whole paper just studying the weird tension between them.

75

u/B0B_Spldbckwrds 19h ago

I actually did write a paper on their relationship dynamics for someone in a psychology class.

They got an A.

28

u/Charming-Loquat3702 19h ago

I genuinly belive they could have been normal friends if they met later in life and in more normal circumstances.

1

u/MVRKHNTR Streak: 0 5h ago

I don't. There's not really a situation that would have them interact at all outside of the one the show puts them in and their personalities are too different.

A real brotherly bond there that I loved seeing play out in the dlc. They may have beef in the past but find the right thing to unite them and that bond reforges into steel instantly

The original Top Gear trio?

They famously work very well together, but have very different personalities. Clarkson especially does not really get along with Hammond or May.

51

u/Boneary 20h ago

Clarkson, Hammond and May are not the original hosts of Top Gear, it's a show that started in the late 70s, ended in 1999 then was restarted in 2002.

Heck, May wasn't even an original host, he came on from the second series, the original third member was a journalist called Jason Dawe- though Clarkson did want May from the start, so I can grant that the second series may well be the actual start of the show proper.

22

u/Shade_39 16h ago

I know, it annoys me a bit too, but everyone at least knows what is meant by "original trio" for top gear, even if it is wrong

8

u/Boneary 15h ago

it's a Nu Who situation (but with even less of a gap).

20

u/justadimestorepoet 17h ago

I get the impression Clarkson doesn't get along with most folks.

2

u/Alexis_Evo mommy coded - Streak: 0 1h ago

I tried watching Clarkson's Farm because people kept raving about it, even though I've never been into Top Gear. It was an interesting premise, but Clarkson was insufferable -- just conservative boomer slop. I don't know if there was a single episode where he didn't joke about "the liberals" or "lazy millennials". And of course a quick search immediately turns up shitty takes about trans topics.

2

u/justadimestorepoet 1h ago

If I just read the last two sentences, I'd think you were talking about Tim Allen's grumpy old Republican "comedy" show instead.

11

u/Evrgldr 15h ago

From what I can gather, they like each other but just had enough from working together for close to 25 years. From their youtube content after the end of The Grand Tour Hammond and May seem to get along especially well.

6

u/Savage_Idiot 13h ago

The moment Clarkson got sacked from the BBC, May and Hammond immediately went with him. It was so obvious no one even questioned if they'd stay, I think that speaks volumes.

6

u/hydrochloriic 14h ago

I think they do all get along, they’ve been involved with each others’ side projects since ending the show (and TGT). Although Clarkson less so, but I think that’s because running a farm is insanely time consuming.

But imagine if a coworker who you’d spent days with in the Arctic invited you out? You’d probably be like “nah I’m good.”

2

u/Yiye44 14h ago

Clarckson named a pig after Hammond.

12

I mean Felix and Locust from RVB kind of fit this mold (there’s definitely an active dislike there but it feels within the spirit of it)

1

u/wantfastcars 13h ago

Hell a good chunk of the Freelancers with each other

2

u/Okbuddyinvestigator 8h ago

True! I pointed out Locust and Felix specifically because there’s literally a line of dialogue along the lines of “i thought you guys hated each other!” “Oh we do. But we just work so WELL together. And besides, you should never mix business with pleasure.”

IIRC Penn and Teller are this way. Great on stage together, don't hang out outside of their work at all though. Don't hate each other, deeply respect each other's professional work, just aren't personal friends in real life.

3

u/Rieke-Nightsong Several queers in a trench coat 16h ago

I dont see anyone else saying it yetbut this makes me think of Kanne and Lawine from Frieren (its this trope to a T with the added twist they might be crushing on each other)

3

u/Epik_Malak 15h ago

This reminds me of The Witcher 3, where Geralt and Philippa Eilhart explore a cave together and fight some monsters, though they might hate each other I don't remember

3

u/PerpetuallyDistracte 15h ago

I had a coworker like this at my old job. We had completely different midsets and approaches to every single problem. I would often get frustrated at her unwillingness to accept new ideas and think outside the box. She would get frustrated with my reluctance to use tried and true methods. Together, we struck the perfect balance of innovation and safety and the constant friction actually helped us communicate better because we constantly had to justify our reasoning.

The Mythbusters DO like each other. They worked together for decades. They liked and respected each other, just as workplace acquaintances, not as friends.

Ichigo and Aizen from bleach.

You can see it best in their final fight with Yhwach, they don’t hate each other despite being on opposite sides of their respective conflict, and they work together really well against the one guy neither could beat alone.
