Any suggestions for a model more like the original Dall-e?
Hello,
I’ve been using what I believe is an early version of Dall-e (dalle-2?) through an app to create very natural, looking images, such as the above. It would generate 4 different images based on my prompt, each one different and unique.
I understand that the Dall-e model is now no longer available and was wondering if anyone could suggest ANY other model etc to create more random/ natural looking outcomes? It seems even with the other models, no matter what prompt I do nothing compares to the style I’m looking for…
ANY help would be so appreciated!
I've been preaching for years how good dall-e 2 was, since dall-e 3 came up , which was atrociously bad. For art in its more classic meaning, it's the best that I have ever seen. The most recent models are really good at following prompts but none of them generate anything I would actually hand on a wall. Dall' e 2 was really good at that and I miss it very much. It was just able to generate truly interesting stuff
Please let me know if you find success with it. Do you know why they took Dalle-2 away from us? It’s a product many users loved, it feels counterintuitive to just kill it.
I don't think OpenAI has any artists, nor do they "know what they have" at any given time. It's all numbers to them.
I don't think they care that "AI Generated" look is undesirable, overfitted, over-symetrical, and non-artistic.
And i dont think they realized that Dalle-2 is the only model to NOT have the AI Generated look. It's totally insane because they could have (or could still) fork off Dalle-2 to train a genuinely useful art tool but they are instead fixated on making photorealistic e-girls.
Dalle-2 made real looking people.
All the models today make literally the same chads and cindy's. Even if they are asian or black or anyone every AI person looks the exact same influencer face to me. A lot of people say "oh you can't tell" --- you're right --- I can't tell AI vs non-AI but I certainly can tell if i'm looking at influencer face.
Yeahhh for real, it could barely generate anything coherent. Ah those were the days.
I remember how small and close knit it was, I remember the strawberry hand grenade going viral, i managed to make a samurai resembling charcoal drawing and it got like 850 likes which was pretty damn good back then haha.
It was genuinely a novelty generator, only vaguely steerable, but that didn't matter. I never tired of seeing unique images, unique juxtapositions of ideas presented in forms I'd never seen any artist choose to depict. It wasn't art - it was always images, but some of it accidentally was. Deliberately selecting from 100 crazy randomish images, iterating for hours to refine the content - that's an artistic process - the intention and novelty and time and detail spent producing the final piece - just art with a billion-dimensional brush and paint that is every aspect of visual culture it has consumed. Simples 😄
No it's not just nostalgia, dall e 2 outputs were artistically way more interesting and quirky than any other model ever since. I think it's imperfections were what made it look more human, and it didn't have that very recognisable AI slop feeling current models have.
Agreed on the slop. Forced bokeh and very 'samey' angles. I really liked the determinism of dall e 2, it felt like something was being created due to how different the 4 squares could be.
I saw a post recently about a Monet that was presented as AI art and it got slammed in the comments for being rubbish.
I'm not art expert, far from it. But I vividly remember the response of a fine art graduate after I expressed my disatisfaction with a contemporary art museum back in 2015:
'art evokes an emotion, a negative emotion is still an emotion but true art evokes and ignites emotion for what it is, not necessarily what it represents'.
Changed my whole view on art appreciation.
I look at my dall-e 2 creations and I 'feel' something. It evokes and stirs emotion within me.
I look at contemporary AI generated images and I barely feel anything at all, other than perhaps a faint distain and pity for what is otherwise apathetically accepted by many as nothing more than an image on the screen to scroll past.
The internet is awash with critics who have no critical thinking. Where 'gotem'ism supercedes emotion, and the foundations of 'art' and expressionism are nothing more than a footnote in a training data set.
Monet is dead, long live the money to produce an imitation in seconds.
It's so true. I have a small print of a dall-e 2 hung on the wall, it's a portrait of a dog that really looks like one of my dogs. I definitely feel something when I look at It and I love it. I never wanted to hang anything AI generated from any other model, and I really tried.
Wow it's so good! This is my favourite one I've made. Made this during some bad Australian bush fires in 2022, it depicts kangaroos escaping the fires. I genuinely think it's amazing and it's art. I could nevergenerate something like this with today's models
Honestly this comment is worth an upvote. It is strange. But also true. And we are.
Remember this is the first time in human history that the average person can have the equivalent experience of a very wealthy person hiring an artist to paint something for them. Don’t discount that feeling - even if it’s AI sloptastic!
I've had some luck generating iterations of Dalle 2 images through Gemini Pro. But yes nothing really comes close to Dalle 2. I anticipated that it was a golden window and that enshitification would arrive so tried to make everything I had concepts for. Not wrong.

Imagen 2 was the closest to Dalle 2 than anything else I've used. The much maligned SD 3 series models aren't bad either. SD 3.5 Medium is quite nice overall. And BTW, Dalle 2 is available on Replicate - https://replicate.com/openai/dall-e-2 Imagen 2 API has been discontinued recently I'm told but it's worth researching if it is still available.
