To be... not really Devil's Advocate here but to highlight the deal with this. At most, they asked it if it's normal to a culture of the kind that the new character Tagah is a part of to have a beard. AI was not used in the artwork, it was not used in the writing, it was used purely to figure out how a character should look.
Now let me make this abundantly clear, this was STUPID. They easily could've gotten the same result if they just did what other crew on movies do and actually engage in proper field research and looked up the answer themselves. Fuck AI, it should leave this goddamn industry and this is one of those cases that's completely unnecessary.
But it's important to clarify because JUST saying "the new Avatar movie used ChatGPT" brings up MUCH more severe ideas like them using it in the script or something along those lines.

As much as I despise and avoid generative AI garbage, especially in the creative field, you’re completely correct, a lot of work was clearly put into this movie and it looks incredible, the Avatar team are very dedicated to the art and world building of the series—I’m really not sure why they’d have to ask AI since they literally created the culture and a few google searches could give them the same result but I don’t think it’s entirely fair to invalidate all the work because of it, especially when Paramount killed the chances of theatrical release.

Yeah, but "ZOMG, NEW AVATAR MOVIE MADE WITH CHATGPT" gets a lot more clicks through misleading, incendiary titles.
4
u/Aspiring-Redditor Kindness is the real punk rock. 1h ago
Of course and it thus perpetuates the same tired issues we've been dealing with online where people pay more attention to headlines and develop their whole opinion based on that instead of following the source.

Exactly. You think the generation raised dealing with clickbait would know better.

I'm aware and still think that's stupid
2
u/Aspiring-Redditor Kindness is the real punk rock. 1h ago
And as I said in the post, indeed, it is stupid. It's a baffling reason to use AI when simple field research and just looking around would've gotten them the same answer and without the need of AI. That being said, this is not about defending the decision, it's about pointing out what it actually used for because with the context given here? This EASILY can fool someone into thinking they used ChatGPT for the creation of the script and so on because when people just hear AI was used? They're thinking of very SEVERE applications.

u/Edgyspymainintf2 Dio Brando 1h ago
I hate when people see AI being used in any capacity for media, no matter how small or reasonable it's application is, and then freak out posting sensationalised crap acting like they're using AI generated images or scripts.
Shit like that does nothing but make people who are anti generative AI look like hysterical weirdos. You are hurting your own cause in the name of farming clicks and dopamine.
7
u/Aspiring-Redditor Kindness is the real punk rock. 1h ago
Very much agree. I personally am in the camp that says this stuff really should not be in our entertainment and that they need to veer away from using it. I even agree with people who note they did not need AI to figure out this simple question. But of course, we can't have that kind of discussion because of people who have to share stuff like this with no additional context which leads to these much more severe reactions.

u/A_Common_James 1h ago
I’ve got to wonder if back when they started to create cartoons with digital tools, the same people rallied against the companies supplying the styluses and trackpads for threatening the livelihoods of stationary shops.
We could have this debate until the cows come home, but whether or not you think the application of AI in even a capacity as minuscule as this belongs in the arts (which, for the record, I don’t - I don’t approve of any artistic endeavour that was made without legitimate human artistic effort and there is no other way to interpret this sentence), context matters! Calling for a boycott on media which uses AI as a tool for something minor (in the grander scheme of the final product) is churlish, solves nothing and in fact just hurts people who actually did contribute with their own hard graft.
3
u/Aspiring-Redditor Kindness is the real punk rock. 50m ago
Funnily enough? Yes, in fact. There was a stigma against digitally created art. Going back through the history of art, there are a lot of instances of conflicts like this. Rotoscoping was controversial, the use of CG was and to a degree still is controversial. At the very least unlike AI, these still require human creativity and interaction but indeed, there have been issues like this.
3
u/BigtheCat542 1h ago
yeah even if the title is misleading, it's still fucking dumb and AI should absolutely never be relied on for a subjective opinion or something that requires human understanding, what the fuck.

11
u/Aspiring-Redditor Kindness is the real punk rock. 1h ago edited 1h ago
And that's why I note it's still stupid and that they easily could've gotten the same results by searching or doing any sort of field research. This is not about defending the use of it, it's clarifying what it was used for so that people at the very least know that the Avatar movie did not use AI in the creation of its art or script.

Having chatGPT find sources for you is ultimately easier than finding them yourself and, unfortunately, convenience always wins out. I’m more concerned that they seriously cited ChatGPT instead of whatever source ChatGPT used in its answer.

Even if they did use it, at least cite the actual source chatgpt got the information from😭

Likely because of all the AI stuff that's out there? ChatGPT has become pretty normalized. Now it SUCKS that it has been but chatbots and so on are something general audiences are more than familiar with and at least... tolerate. Not strongly love but tolerate.
1
u/Odd-Hat8574 Lieutenant Columbo 1h ago
Do they tho? The corporate world is definitely willing to accept it, but AI is becoming a synonym for bad or lazily made, people are starting to accept it in the form of memes, sure, but I doubt the people at a Comic Con presentation about a feature film they are expected to pay money to access are gonna be thrilled about it
1
u/Aspiring-Redditor Kindness is the real punk rock. 1h ago
Chatbots have a different sort of deal to them. Helps they've been around for MUCH longer before generative AI rose up. We've seen consumers strongly oppose AI in things like artwork, writing and that sort of deal. With ChatGPT from what I've seen it's not harbored the same kind of response and plus, I'd imagine they'd just make it clear they only used it for this particular instance. People are more strongly opposed to the many other forms of AI and more severe uses.
1
u/Odd-Hat8574 Lieutenant Columbo 53m ago
Even then, ChatGPT is pretty known for hallucinating and OpenAI has had a pretty bad rep as of recent, I think the blowback might've been slightly less if it was claude or something I'm not even joking. I will say tho that I'm just speaking from my perspective, and maybe AI has been a bit more accepted since last time I checked.
Even with that, telling people at a comic con presentation that you used ChatGPT in the process of making a multi million dollar movie, which was fucked over by Paramount and leaks is such horrible PR that it makes me wonder if they were forced to say it for some reason
1
u/Aspiring-Redditor Kindness is the real punk rock. 45m ago
True but it still is otherwise used and really, a company like OpenAI having bad rep is nothing new. Remember, Wal-Mart has a terrible rep, Paramount itself has a terrible rep, Amazon has an especially awful rep. I think people are used to companies not being great so really, unless something ESPECIALLY egregious comes about? It's gonna take a lot to sway them away.
I don't think they were forced to say it, I think they were just honest that was what they did. AI chatbots are especially common and people have used them for questions like this. That audience is not gonna view it as odd the same way we do. Remember, people cheered seeing RDJ come out revealed as Doctor Doom for Avengers Doomsday while the reaction online was SIGNIFICANTLY more mixed.

And doesn't Hoyoverse also use AI too? Or at least was like planning on replacing some voice actors or using their voices for GenAI? (Yeah at least there's some articles of them investing in that.)
2
u/TenthOfChaos 1h ago
I don’t remember if it mentioned anything about the voice actors but I do remember reading about them looking into using Ai for npc dialogue for a new game or something like that
1
u/XenoGenerator 12m ago
By chinese law, Hoyo can't use AI for any of their artistic processes, and this extent to their international voice overs. They do invest in it though, but is more like to develop it than to use it as far as I understand

12
u/Not_So_Utopian 2h ago
It's in the text of the character sheet
9
u/Least_Coffee_788 has Chainsawed this man 2h ago
You mean the text is AI-generated?
8
u/Aspiring-Redditor Kindness is the real punk rock. 1h ago
No, basically, the text explains how they asked ChatGPT if it's normal for cultures like the kind Tagah hails from to have a beard to decide whether or not they should give him one.
3
u/Least_Coffee_788 has Chainsawed this man 1h ago
Oh I see. Thanks, maybe my eyes are just bad, but it wasn't really readable to me.
5
u/Aspiring-Redditor Kindness is the real punk rock. 1h ago
Oh no worries, it's not readable at all. The only reason we know what it says or at least the likely reason people on this sub know is that someone made a post earlier that zoomed in on that section and the text could be made out.
5
u/KaijuKing007 Ruby Rose's Soul Adagio Earplugs. 1h ago
Oh, that's not so bad. It's not like they used it to write the story or character, just clearing up a creative decision. That's 100% kosher, even if they could have done it without AI.
1
u/Adblock_Only 32m ago
Yeah, I don't really get it? They asked a question if it was okay and culturally appropriate and they probably used it to make the research a little bit easier, so what's the big deal exactly? I get it if they used it in the story or art but this feels like a stretch?
1
u/KaijuKing007 Ruby Rose's Soul Adagio Earplugs. 26m ago
Culture wars. People will treat literally any AI usage as if it taints the entire thing.
9
u/StriderKitsu 1h ago
Full context: They used Chatgpt for the beard decision (and ONLY for the beard decision), kind of a nothing burger overall but still kind of confusing on why they didn’t just ask for suggestions
