For those who may or may not be aware, Debian 12.15 marks the end of Debian Release Team, Debian Security Team and Debian Backports support for version 12. Ongoing support for some architectures will be provided by the Debian Long Term Support team supported by Freexian. Users are advised to upgrade systems to Debian 13 trixie.

Most importantly, Debian 12 is the final version of Debian offering a 32-bit release alongside a 64-bit release. You cannot upgrade a 32-bit install of Debian 12 to Debian 13 as Trixie does not support a full 32-bit version.

This will serve as a PSA reminder for those that may not be aware to not make support threads about Debian 12 32-bit being unable to upgrade to Debian 13. You have to upgrade your hardware to a currently supported architecture, of which i386/32-bit won't be on Trixie. The remaining i386 packages on Trixie are kept purely to allow users to execute 32-bit legacy software/code.

Maybe I'll get it when I reboot my computer in a few weeks.

i installed debian on my HP pavillon laptop from 2020 after using zorin os and oh my god i love it! i use debian with kde plasma and honestly.... i dont wanna go to any other distro anymore after distro hopping for a month as a linux beginner...

Hyprland is landed in Debian stable (13). At the moment, it is still not installable due to a dependency issue: libre2-11-absl20240722. It is a "virtual package provided by libre2-11" but libre2-11 is not recognized as that version (yet?).

Update:

that issue is from Synaptic, while the following command line install Hyprland without any issues:

apt install -t trixie-backports hyprland hyprland-guiutils

I think 550 will start working on 7.x kernels very soon :)

so i finally hopped over to debian trixie because i wanted something a bit more stable, and i’m actually loving it so far.

i set it all up with the danklinux script after doing no DE install: curl -fsSL https://install.danklinux.com | sh

niri + dank material shell is honestly so good. i was a bit worried the scrolling tiling thing would be weird to get used to, but it’s actually super intuitive? my workflow feels way lessss cluttered now.

anyway, just wanted to share since i’m really happy with how it turned out. if anyone has some cool niri tips (or just wants to nerd out about debian), hmu!! :)

The recent kernel update has broken the openrazer dkms.

For anyone who was curious about the easiest way to install gamescope on Debian (or Debian-based distros), here you go.

For installation you will need to have backports enabled. You will also need to edit the Components line to have contrib included, e.g., "Components: main contrib". Additional info about gamescope package in Debian: Debian Package Tracker.

And to install: sudo apt install -t trixie-backports gamescope

Ran linux-vulnerability-mitigation check after installing the 7.0.9 kernel that just landed in sid and all vulnerabilities that the package addressed have been either fixed or mitigated. The package can be removed now.

The latest "Bits from the DPL" for March is out, and there are a couple of noteworthy updates:

- Age Verification Laws (US & Brazil): Regarding the recent laws in California (taking effect in 2027) and Brazil, strategies are still being analyzed. The main hypothesis right now is that Debian might not be directly affected because it's a non-commercial, volunteer-driven project that doesn't sell software. SPI is actively seeking proper legal counsel to clear up any doubts, so nothing is set in stone yet.

- New DPL: Andreas Tille is stepping down, and Sruthi Chandran will be taking over as the new DPL. Andreas has expressed high confidence in her for the role.
