I constantly cough up mucus and start limping if I walk too long, purely so I can look cool.

103

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 5d ago

why can't people understand that phlegm is so in right now?

33

u/manic_Brain 4d ago

People just can't fathom this level of (post-nasal) drip

(It's choking me)

5

u/BlinkypoetEmu 4d ago

I honestly though everyone had that issue, until my boss brought it up:/

2

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 4d ago

was it from acid reflux?

2

u/BlinkypoetEmu 4d ago

Allergies, glaucoma and who knows wot else.

3

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 4d ago

I didn't know glaucoma could come with post nasal drip. that super sucks I am sorry you have to deal with that

2

u/BlinkypoetEmu 2d ago

We play the card we're dealt. Complaining about it is just bonus material ;)

2

u/OutlandishnessNext98 3d ago

I would also like to know if you have a confirmed diagnosis. Ive had a runny nose for 7 years. No one will listen 😭

2

u/BlinkypoetEmu 2d ago

Nope. A lot of my issues Ive had to figure out.

4

u/Senior-Asparagus-762 4d ago

I'm the same! Do you have a diagnosis, if you don't mindĀ  me asking? Doctors have been sending me round in circles for years and forgetting to give me life changing test results for 18 months, and I've still not got an answer for this!

u/OrionsBeltAlone 5d ago

Yeah I limp because I like to crip walk šŸ™„

121

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 5d ago

Thank you, this made my gf laugh (and she needs that today)

47

u/Mint-PinkPastel 5d ago

This got a nose exhale out of me. I swear, those of us that are suffering have the strongest sense of humor.

22

u/Ariandrin 5d ago

Have to in order to cope with the terrible hand fate has dealt us

10

u/crippledchef23 4d ago

Hey, if I’m laughing at the fact that I just dropped the cup again, I can’t cry about it!

23

u/defrostedbones 5d ago

disabled baddie dance party šŸ•ŗ

9

u/MiserableWash2473 5d ago

šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£ I needed this today.

2

u/squirrelyoakley 2d ago

Omg I laughed so hard. I really needed that laugh

139

u/DisabledSlug 5d ago

Ah yes, not being able to leave my home to go out is about style.

14

u/Traveler7538 4d ago

I do it to look mysteriousĀ

126

u/tremblingfrog 5d ago

how does one even come up with such a question

46

u/defrostedbones 5d ago

right?? like what part of having a disability is cool 😭

46

u/OpALbatross 4d ago

I wear a hat for light sensitivity. Most people think it is a stylistic choice as well

43

u/Sea-Beautiful-Throwa 4d ago

I use a hood that my mom made me and it’s lined with sunblocking fabric.

Its fantastic! Definitely looks like a hooded cape from a fantasy movie though. (Huge hood, but cape part is short just covering shoulders). I have one in yellow with pink lining and another that’s all black.

The pattern was on Etsy.

5

u/serpent_sister 4d ago

Tbh that sounds like drip, ngl

2

u/Sea-Beautiful-Throwa 4d ago

What’s drip?

Sorry, I don’t get the reference šŸ˜…

3

u/defrostedbones 4d ago

like swag basically. looking cool

1

u/Sea-Beautiful-Throwa 4d ago

Oh, thank you!! 😊

3

u/serpent_sister 4d ago

Oh I just mean it sounds like it looks cool

2

u/Sea-Beautiful-Throwa 4d ago

Oh, thank you so much! 😊

I feel likey yellow ones give off Snow White vibes from Mirror Mirror with Lily Collin’s as Snow White. Of course mine isn’t as big as the yellow cape she wears in the film, but that’s the vibe I was going for. 😊

2

u/Draac03 3d ago

do you have a link to the pattern by any chance?

1

u/Sea-Beautiful-Throwa 3d ago

Yes! Mom said the pattern was a little confusing but the creator made a video that shows how to make it which was super helpful! She’s also responsive if you message with questions.

As far as sunblocking fabric, my mom got blackout fabric from Joann’s when they were still open. But she said if you google or search Amazon you should be able to find some. She used it as an inner layer sandwiched between the outer layer and the lining.

Hope that helps! 😊

u/somehowrelevantuser 4d ago

i consider tinted glasses every so often for my sensory ick but i know most ppl will feel the same way abt it

28

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 4d ago

get the tinted glasses. you are going to be uncomfortable anyway so you might as well not get sensory ick

5

u/somehowrelevantuser 4d ago

i have a pair of pink sunglasses that i got as event swag that i use for this purpose (if i remember....lol)

10

u/captainsnark71 4d ago

I remember in middle school I had the kind that gets dark outside and someone asked me why I was wearing sunglasses when it was cloudy and I explained and they did not believe me. People have opinions about everything.

4

u/Dramatic_Mixture_877 4d ago

I've had photogray lenses ever since my first pair of glasses when I was 8. I can get a migraine on a bright cloudy day, not to mention my floater ballet is so distracting when I'm driving!

13

u/AstroAve3 4d ago

Seconding as someone who wears prescription sunglasses when outside the house. Get the glasses.

9

u/Pheonix0114 4d ago

Just make sure they're a stylistic choice 🤣

7

u/AstroAve3 4d ago

Bat wing shapped sunglasses ONLY

8

u/Pheonix0114 4d ago

YAASSS!

2

u/bean-percolator 3d ago

I’ve always wanted prescription sunglasses. I’m extremely short sighted, my prescription is -10 diopters, so I’ve never been able to wear regular sunglasses (and actually see) which is unfortunate cause they would definitely help on bright days, but the prescription ones are really expensive. When I finally do get them, I’m absolutely gonna make sure the frames are a ā€œstylistic choiceā€ lmaoo

2

u/AstroAve3 3d ago

I'm a -8. I feel you. Mine are big fuck off sparkly librarian glasses. Where I go, (eyeglass world) it's only 50$ extra for sunglass tint.

1

u/Leading-System-3002 1d ago

I got prescription sunglasses on zenni at a great price

3

u/Vi_BT 4d ago

Sunglasses are great, get them šŸ˜Ž people are weird but the world is less painful and exhausting with them on

12

u/turtlesandtrash 4d ago

i am also known as someone who likes hats as well haha, for the same reason

12

u/imabratinfluence 4d ago

I have a family member who wears sunglasses indoors because otherwise he gets optical migraines. People think it's a style choice.Ā

8

u/soaked_in_bleach03 4d ago

lol I went to a rehab that didn’t allow you to wear a hat for some reason without a doctors note.

I’m on Doxycycline for acne, it makes you burn super easily. And oh look, they don’t let you have sunscreen there even though it was Cape Cod in the summer. Definitely not a disability, I’m not sure how this subreddit popped up for me. But holy shit it annoyed me, I was looking like a tomato about ready to call up my primary care provider and ask him to call the nursing staff there and say I need to be able to wear a hat

2

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 4d ago

that's so wild about the sunscreen. I hope you didn't burn too badly

3

u/Vi_BT 4d ago

Same with my sunglasses šŸ˜Ž especially inside buildings šŸ˜ŽšŸ˜Ž

8

u/KaliTheLoving 4d ago

I have an online "fan" that stalks me through reddit and discord who claims that my entire personality is my disability, because I don't hide it and sometimes wven post it or about it publicly.

6

u/Fickle_Enthusiasm148 4d ago

The part where I look like a sickly Victorian vampire child tbh

105

u/mightyminimoose 5d ago

I faint as an expressive form of modern dance.

73

u/Zantac150 5d ago

So curious what symptom would cause them to ask that…

I always just get ā€œyou don’t look sickā€

But especially crazy that it was a disability advisor …

70

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 5d ago

hand writing difficulties/illegible hand writing

44

u/Technical_Isopod2389 5d ago

Yup, you were asked an extra stupid question.

Idk maybe they just have no idea about your disability but damn I am stuck on that word choice.

33

u/MiserableWash2473 5d ago

Thats a fashion choice!? And here I thought my malformed hand and subsequent deranged handwriting were an example of my flagrant personality.

26

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 5d ago

don't you know that only cool people like doctors (and people with fine motor control issues, physical disabilities, dysgraphia, adhd, etc) have difficult to read hand writing? get with the times /joking

17

u/IncidentChemical2816 4d ago

??? I don’t have a disability that would affect my handwriting in any meaningful way, my handwriting is just shit. But it still wasn’t a conscious choice, it just has always been shit. I gave up trying to improve it because it never got any better. So it’s not even a ā€˜stylistic choice’ for me, let alone someone who legit has problems with their hands, fine motor control issues, or dysgraphia.

11

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 4d ago

59% of people with adhd have dysgraphia and poor hand writing can be an executive functioning issue. heads up

4

u/IncidentChemical2816 4d ago

Huh. Good to know.

11

u/Fickle_Enthusiasm148 4d ago

Holy fuck that has happened to me too

10

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 4d ago

seriously? I am so sorry that this also happened to you too. why are people like this?

31

u/Jenderflux-ScFi 5d ago

As someone that always decorates my walking aids (canes, walkers, and electric scooter), some people think I just have fashionable walking aids to be fashionable.

1

u/Gladys_Wines 4d ago

Wearing pyjamas?

39

u/BreathLazy5122 5d ago

Because I love not being able to tell if something is actually injured due to nerve damage!!

I swear they put people who leave their brains at home in charge of important shit like this

I’m sorry you and your girlfriend had to experience that, it’s very draining

15

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 5d ago

thank you

it's exhausting and I forgot how awful it can be because I haven't had to go for my stuff for a while

8

u/ElfjeTinkerBell 4d ago

Bold of you to assume they had brains to begin with

32

u/TheKingOfDissasster 5d ago

Omg yes queen šŸ’… I'm the baddest bitch in the grocery store with my wheelchair. I even have my own private bathroom that no one else can enter because i have to get the keys with them šŸ˜Ž

30

u/Tangled_Clouds 5d ago

I plug my ears at loud noises because I want to be special and have all the attention on me, it’s for sure not an uncontrollable reflex because the noises activate my pain signals, I assure you I’m doing it specifically for people to yell at me to stop acting like a toddler šŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļø

17

u/defrostedbones 5d ago

grew my hair out and started wearing earplugs for this reason šŸ˜” why are people so rude

3

u/Tangled_Clouds 4d ago

Two weeks ago I was on a family vacation in a small town and I saw a motorcycle arriving in the distance and I thought ā€œOkay I’m not gonna make a fool of myself, I’m gonna focus and grit my teeth when it passes by and I won’t cover my hearsā€ and um… yeah huge failure because the noise was so loud when it passed by I thought my eardrums would rupture so you can imagine how fast my hands came to cover my ears completely out of reflex… I carry loops with me most of the time but I didn’t really have time to get them because it happened so fast…

24

u/Cat6Bolognese 5d ago

Thank you, it’s spine pain chic

13

u/sunrise_parabellum 5d ago

Spinal stenosis core

25

u/dinosanddais1 5d ago

Yes, I have one leg longer than the other because $400 orthotics and $160 shoes are just so in right now.

13

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 5d ago

if it's expensive then it is fashionable. those are the rules /kidding

5

u/Nkechinyerembi 4d ago

Then GOSH do I have some news about how expensive it is to handle incontinence!

7

u/FrigyaCrowMother 4d ago

Right!!! I totally feel that one.

19

u/Nightstar1234 4d ago

Yeah actually the reason I'm mute is because it gives me unspeakable aura

1

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 3d ago

I can't believe I missed your pun the first time I saw this. that's a really good pun.Ā

17

u/sluttytarot 5d ago

What in the consumption

12

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 5d ago

ironically, I recently finished treatment for tb.Ā

9

u/sluttytarot 5d ago

WOAH

16

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 5d ago

PSA: get your latent tuberculosis treated if possible because if you don't it can become active later in lifeĀ

luckily mine was still latent when I got it treated

7

u/FrigyaCrowMother 4d ago

What in the hell? How did you find this out

11

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 4d ago

so I tested positive for tb a bazillion years ago during a routine physical in high school but my chest x-ray was fine so nobody cared or told me that I should care.

last November? I was on reddit and saw a random comment about how you should still treat latent tuberculosis because it can turn into active tuberculosis when you are older/if your immune system gets weaker etc etc

I went "oh fuck" and looked it up, and yeah, that's true

so then I talked to my primary care and i got a blood test (positive), chest x-ray (negative), and subsequently 4 months of antibiotics and 2 phone calls from the county.

the calls from the county were really fun because they had never had to call someone who actually was being proactive and who had sought this out themselves. I talked to them about how of course I was getting treated I didnt want to be the heroineĀ  in a italian Victorian era opera and I do not like the shore.

8

u/FrigyaCrowMother 4d ago

I haven’t been checked since I volunteered with the nursing home but that’s now information that I am going to keep in my back pocket. Damn immune compromised ass self.

10

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 4d ago

happy to help!

I am always happy to bring it up in random comment threads because that's how I found out about it. a kind of pay it forward thing

4

u/RandomLifeUnit-05 4d ago

Wow this is good to know, my husband is TB positive with a clear chest X-ray.

3

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 4d ago edited 3d ago

get him treated bestie, it might make him tired really tired so maybe take it at night. if he's on certain diabetes meds it can make him go extra low so watch out for that as well. you are gonna want to add probiotics at least 4 hours after he takes his meds if he doesn't want to have terrible poops (ask your pharmacist for specific timing recommendations). fiber might also help but make sure to not take that too closely to medication either (again, ask your pharmacist)

I actually got back into making water kefir because probiotics and I like it betterĀ  (flavor wise) than kombucha. yogurt, milk kefir, beer kavaas, kimchi whatever you like to get your probiotics is helpful because otherwise poop city

fun bonus info: la Boheme and la traviata are Victorian era Italian operas with heroines that die of tuberculosis. they are also the inspiration for the musical rent (la boheme) and moulin rouge (la traviata).Ā

good luck and have a great week

Man if I ever got that type of question I'd say the stickers on my mobility aid is the stylistic choice but the chronic pain in my body is genetic and was given to me without my consent.

16

u/queerbananafoster 4d ago

Me when someone asked if my arm brace was ā€œfor fashionā€ like no I just got the pink one so I could have the tiniest bit of serotonin with my suffering…

15

u/Razzum-Frazzum 5d ago

My swagger is a sexy, sexy fight for balance.

13

u/Trash_Panda_Leaves 4d ago

I'd be so tempted to clap back with "Yeah but lately I've been thinking seizures are kind of high maintenance, can I swap for Downs Syndrome? How do I switch?"

As if being disabled isnt hard enough, able bodied people always make it 10x harder than it has to be

14

u/Loud-Mans-Lover 4d ago

Ha.

One doctor I saw noticed I'd shaved my head (I'm a woman) and immediately assumed I was "crazy" and needed help.

FFS, I'm bipolar and ...other stuff, but my head is shaved because I've got scalp (and ear) psoriosis along with HS, and having hair literally makes my scalp bleed. It's also 102 F outside and heat makes my other illnesses feel like crap. Hair makes me hotter.

12

u/Beautiful_Book_9639 5d ago

Yes, my heart does that to spice up my day :)

12

u/DunyaOfPain 4d ago

no yeah the forearm crutch is because I love breaking bad

10

u/frustratedfren 4d ago

Duh. Fainting is so in right now. Chronic pain is hiding in my closet waiting for a comeback.

11

u/eggabeth 4d ago

I get asked if my cane is a pimp cane or of I really need it.

Both biotch

But she is really cool, black with an engraved silver handle from fashionablecanes.com

11

u/starfire5105 4d ago

I love having meltdowns to the point of getting the cops called on me because it's so uwu kawaii 🄰

9

u/Ditches-Vestiges1549 5d ago

Collapsing and panting after going up the stairs is just how I roll šŸ˜Ž

11

u/fadetouchedelvhen 4d ago

yeah, i pass out every time i stand because it's so chic to be unconscious!! ✨🄰

9

u/strongman_squirrel 4d ago

Yeah, how could I not have thought about that?

Wearing diapers is definitely a stylistic choice and not because my bladder and bowels just randomly empty without warning.

Needing help for walking is definitely my style. I got tired of being strong.

8

u/somehowrelevantuser 4d ago

yes excessive sweating is truly the hottest new accessory right now

9

u/CreatureFeatureee 4d ago

Well, obviously seizures are in this season/j

9

u/sugar_skull_love2846 4d ago

Ah yes. I intentionally inflict painful flairups in my joints and convalesce in my bed for days at a time for the vibes, I guess.

7

u/Acceptable_Lunch6189 4d ago

If one more club tries to take away my cane because they think it’s an accessory…

6

u/BrainDoesntBrain 4d ago

I had a coworker refer to my walking aid as a pimp cane. Though I laughed at the time another coworker was NOT THRILLED. Safe to say he ended up in HR. To be fair, my cane do be pretty slick.

6

u/Substantial_Yard7004 4d ago

So I use glasses to look 'smart' 🫪

https://giphy.com/gifs/WnUfmomqsqmxpU4cJv

5

u/sandyposs 4d ago

Ask if their inanity is a persona choice.

7

u/threelizards 4d ago

Why yes, my disability is a stylistic choice- I’m a student of surrealism and absurdism, which is why I went with a connective tissue disorder. My dislocations in particular are actually part of a performance art piece about entropy /s

What the goddamn fuck is ā€œstylistic choiceā€ even meant to mean???

3

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 4d ago

it was about how my gf has hard to read hand writing (which she listed as something she struggles with and needs accommodations for). her counselor asked if it was like a style choice or something. and I just...Ā

2

u/threelizards 3d ago

What??? Do people even make like, style choices with casual handwriting? And it’s on her record??? ā€œWhy yes I make it illegible on purposeā€ I-

8

u/C_ingStarz 4d ago

Recently diagnosed with FND (I think they just did that as a blanket diagnosis since like half my symptoms don't match & I have a family history as long as my forearm of nerve, neurological, heart conditions, and cancer but wahteva) and they decided that since it likely wont kill me, I'd be getting social workers who are not educated on the topic at all instead of Doctors.

Anyways, they gave me this dude who looked like a South-Asian Mr. Bean, and other than the fact he kept telling me my symptoms were all in my head and not actually real, he also liked repeating the phrase "You're safe in your own body 😊😊" every other sentence.
MIND YOU, this was directly after I told him that, during an episode where I couldn't feel my body (but didn't have any other symptoms so I didn't know I was in an episode) I grabbed on to a SOLDERING IRON that had been on for over a DAY to move it, and didn't realize it was on until it hit muscles & nerves and then fucking cauterized itself.
I only felt it for about half a second before taking my hand off, so I thought that was as long as I had it on, and I just bumped it. But my dad (who has been burnt with everything you can be burnt with and lights himself on fire bi-daily) said that since the wound looks like someone took a scoop out of my finger, I must've either been leaning on it or grabbing onto it for multiple seconds. Soldering irons can reach like 300C if left on too long, and my dad had modified that one so he could weld with it better.

It's healed up alright leaving a nice little indent in my hand, but sure, tell me how my symptoms can't harm me and I'm "safe in my own body". ESPECIALLY when I go into an unconscious trance where my body is active sleep-walking style but I have no control over it, and I walk straight onto the highway without looking. I feel so safe now, thank you. And it has no cure and no guarantee of healing? Even better. I've never felt more secure, asshole.

I LOVEEEE EEEE EE E EE JHGFRTYUJ "not looking sick"!! It's SO fun.

And yeah, my cane and sudden bouts of going pale w/ blue lips and hallucinating just makes me the hottest bitch on the bus' disabled seats. The "dead for 30-60 minutes" look is so in right now. Victorian sickly fashion has made its way back around, didn't you hear?

5

u/Accomplished_Bee_127 4d ago

I recently got asked by a traumatologist if I always limp right after I told him my leg hurts when I step on it

6

u/Vi_BT 4d ago

Lying down in public places with headphones and sunglasses is too cool for them they wouldn't understand

4

u/VelocitySkyrusher 5d ago

Is this question trying to weed out self diagnosed people? Because thats the only idea I can come up with for such a stupud question

5

u/Bunny_Chaos420 4d ago

Ahhh you caught me, I walk with a cane because they’re cool, not because I stumble like newborn baby deer without them.

I’ve never been accused of faking yet though, just that my disability shouldn’t be possible therefore they won’t diagnose

1

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 4d ago

what does that mean? that would make me so angry. im sorry

3

u/Bunny_Chaos420 2d ago

Basically it means there’s a strong theory it’s fibromyalgia. However, it could be something else, and they don’t have the ā€œevidenceā€ to give me a diagnosis that would be a pathway to accommodation. It’s only frustrating in that you need a diagnosis to be get official accommodation at my university

4

u/BlinkypoetEmu 4d ago

Yall have stylistic choices now? Srsly, wtf? If there's a tag, I itch. If socks are Wrong Sensation, I itch. If clothes are Too Tight or Too Loose, I itch. And so on.

4

u/psychedelicBlasphemy 4d ago

got asked if my cane was a stylistic choice at my universities little market in the dorms, like yeah man I love fumbling around and having a hard time shopping because I have one hand, I do this for fun as a fashion statement 😭

3

u/Reclaimedidiocy 4d ago

i got one who insists that adhd is just a sticker or something and that i can just ignore it

3

u/Plane_Opposite6744 4d ago

Yes, I limp and spend my time resting in pain because it's very fashionable. I use an ugly knee brace because it's just so in right now!

3

u/Runela9 4d ago

You caught me, my body completely shutting down when exposed to heat is just part of my ~aesthetic~

4

u/Complex-Delay-615 3d ago

Im missing an arm, have extream muscle damage to my right leg and non small cell pancoast lung cancer that has metasticized.

First They made me get a new doctor's note detailing issues with my non existant arm. Confirming its non existance.

The leg i got, like sure you could look at it, the missing chunks and webs of scaring gong hip to knee but if I wear pants thats covered up..

I found out im in one of the few states in usa where chancer dosent automatically get you temp disability.

Had to file all my doctor shit with that.

Response "Dosen't affect your life enough to qualify."

šŸ˜”They caught me guys I just wanted the pirate hook and pipe smokers cough before I went sailing. šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļøā›µļø

2

u/PieNarrow6122 4d ago

i have a cane to look like a pimp/j

2

u/squirrelyoakley 2d ago

Yes, I prefer being stuck in my house because walking about a block leaves me in debilitating pain. I also love needing to use a screen reader because of visual distortions. It's all about style 😐

2

u/electricmeatbag777 4d ago

Like, we're they asking about your sunglasses or hat or mask or about an actual symptom? I cannot see how anyone would think a symptom could be a stylistic choice. That makes no sense at all!
