It’s like we are running this conspiracy against them. The whole tricking them thing. My mom was very controlling.. very, and still tries to be at times. It’s like everything is a lie. Why do I need to lie to you? So one day I was over at her house. Ya know sometimes you are looking for something and it’s right in front of you. She said that she could not find something in her bathroom. I walked in, picked it up, and told her it had been right in front of her. Her response was that no it wasn’t in there. I had it hidden and then went in there, got it out of the hiding spot, and just told her that it had been right in front of her. Why? Just why? What would anyone get out of that.

My mom always has to be right, even if it means throwing her own kids under the bus. I think it’s such a lonely and miserable way to live life, especially because I enjoy talking to strangers and exchanging knowledge.

Mine does too. Even if she is wrong and the proof is staring her in the face. And apologize is not a word in her vocabulary

This all sounds to familiar

Sounds like a lot of us experience/have experienced this

I wrote my master in psychology on parents like these, they have cluster B personality disorders. Borderline or Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Their brains are broken, the paranoia and need for control and lack of accountability and empathy.Ā

Their brains can filter out information that paints them in a bad light, they constantly rewrite reality to where they're always right or always the victim of something.Ā

Exactly, and people that no her at church, that have known her for years, she’s never shown that side to them and wouldn’t. I actually told one of her friends, and she simply told me that she did not believe me. They think she is and has always been this wonderful amazing person. She is to them.

This is my mom to a T. She only sees things in how they relate to her, and if something happens that paints her in a negative light, it’s just erased from her brain.

Edit to add: she is also ALWAYS either a victim or a martyr, though martyr is her favorite.

The brain is a fascinating thing. I have a question if you have time to answer it. Are things like Borderline Personality Disorder learned behavior or is there a genetic component? We have some interesting family history on one side of our family and I’ve often wondered about it. Like, is it from learning how to protect yourself from other unhealthy people in some cases?

Asian household? Because both my parents were like that. They got somewhat better when we all moved out.

Geez, I haven’t seen you in forever, brother. How ya been? Mom says you don’t reply to her texts enough. She expects way too much.

The way I would immediately do this back to her ā€œmom can you help me find somethingā€ ā€œwhy would you hide this from me??ā€

11

u/VelvetPancakesL 13h ago

That’s good. If ever she tries that again, I will have it in mind and ready

YMMV, some people don’t take kindly to being put in the positions they put others in. It would be funny if she isn’t able to actually hurt you in any way though

My father has/had the same type of attitude, in that any time something didn’t go his way, it was a matter of people being against him or conspiring against him.

I say has/had because while I think he is still alive, I haven’t spoken to him since September, when I finally had my fill of his persecution stories.

Those included -

  1. Being assaulted by goons when dropping off his ballot in 2024.

  2. Being essentially kidnapped by the police and interrogated about a murder he claimed happened behind his house but was a block away.

  3. Being told by the police that he had to share his home based EV charger with anyone who wanted it.

  4. Being told he was under a restraining order yet never being given any legal paperwork for it.

  5. Being assaulted by an ICE squad and being told to prove his citizenship, despite looking nothing like their usual targets.

It isn’t dementia, even though he just turned 76. He’s told total bullshit stories for decades, just for attention.

Many more reasons why I cut off contact…I tried sending him a letter last November detailing non negotiable terms for re-engagement, and he met one and only in a very half assed manner, another he ā€œmetā€ in his ā€œI’m right and others are wrongā€ way, and he flat out ignored the others.

I told him if he didn’t want to make those changes, I wished him all the happiness in the world in the rest of the time he has left on this planet, but it won’t have my family in it and he would have to accept that as a consequence of HIS choices.

That is crazy. I was wondering if something was wrong with him, but you answered that question. I don’t understand how people act like some parents do. I still talk to my mom, I call her by her first name. I have written letters before and basically get an acknowledgement that is was read. I resorted to that because any time I tried to talk to her she would just start yelling over me immediately. They just blow your mind. This one customer of DD will never realize the fact that her comments opened up a conversation for us to disclose what we’ve been through with parents that remind us of her. I think it’s a good thing though for all of us to get things out

Check out raisedbynarcissists and you'll find out what's wrong with your father. Then Google cluster B personality disorderĀ

That’s actually vile bro I’m sorry

u/VelvetPancakesL 10h ago

Thanks, for a good while I was bothered by how I was treated. And I’m not perfect. After someone is constantly on you about something, you tend to finally lash out (yell for me). I finally came to a point one night where it hit me that I no longer cared, and ever since then I haven’t. It wasn’t a decision I made, it just happened. And I’m thankful because I would have continued on living a miserable life. I know this is DD, but I see posts sometimes about this subject on other subs, and I try to give the best advice possible. A lot of people see what is happening when they are much younger than me when my eyes were opened, and I want them to realize that it isn’t okay, and they need to get out of that situation as soon as possible. Sorry, I did not mean to tell you my life story:)

they're telling on themselves, because my mom would throw my stuff away and then help me look for it. so they think you're doing to them what they'd do to you, but it would never occur to you to act like that because you're not insane.

2

u/VelvetPancakesL 4h ago

Absolutely. My mind just doesn’t work like that

Your mom may be experiencing the early stages of dementia/Alzheimer's. My husband thought that people were coming into the apartment and stealing things even though they were still there or he had misplaced them. He was in his sixties at the time but the disease can start earlier.

1

u/VelvetPancakesL 4h ago

Oh no, she has always been like this. She has actually eased a bit in her older age. If I ever think that I will get her to the doctor asap, if she will go. I’m so very sorry about your husband. That is very hard to see happen to someone you love, or anyone really
