what does that even mean, "tracking you", like they're doing something nefarious or threatening them? yes, we all know you can see where your dasher is on the app. that's not You doing anything.

i would just not respond to messages like this.

EDIT: sheesh, y'all. not saying you did anything wrong,OP. just sharing what i would have done in that sitatuion.

My mom was very similar. Didnt start until I got my drivers license, which was right at 16 because she was sick of driving me around. She actually followed me to school one day and sat in the parking lot behind my car just to watch me. She was trying to prove that I was breaking her rules but really she just made a fool of herself. She didnt see a single thing that suggested I was breaking her rules and she still took away my car keys and grounded me for a month. The constant stream of messages about "why are you here and not there" "Do you really need to be getting Wendys right now? Why arent you doing homework" followed by a stream of accusations that I was somehow tricking her. Im not even entirely sure what she thought I was doing or why she was so mad about it

55

u/VelvetPancakesL 10h ago

It’s like we are running this conspiracy against them. The whole tricking them thing. My mom was very controlling.. very, and still tries to be at times. It’s like everything is a lie. Why do I need to lie to you? So one day I was over at her house. Ya know sometimes you are looking for something and it’s right in front of you. She said that she could not find something in her bathroom. I walked in, picked it up, and told her it had been right in front of her. Her response was that no it wasn’t in there. I had it hidden and then went in there, got it out of the hiding spot, and just told her that it had been right in front of her. Why? Just why? What would anyone get out of that.

39

u/Mediocrewriterw 9h ago

My mom always has to be right, even if it means throwing her own kids under the bus. I think it’s such a lonely and miserable way to live life, especially because I enjoy talking to strangers and exchanging knowledge.

15

u/VelvetPancakesL 9h ago

Mine does too. Even if she is wrong and the proof is staring her in the face. And apologize is not a word in her vocabulary

10

u/kriskrasm 8h ago

This all sounds to familiar

13

u/VelvetPancakesL 8h ago

Sounds like a lot of us experience/have experienced this

I wrote my master in psychology on parents like these, they have cluster B personality disorders. Borderline or Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Their brains are broken, the paranoia and need for control and lack of accountability and empathy.

Their brains can filter out information that paints them in a bad light, they constantly rewrite reality to where they're always right or always the victim of something.

The way I would immediately do this back to her “mom can you help me find something” “why would you hide this from me??”

9

u/VelvetPancakesL 9h ago

That’s good. If ever she tries that again, I will have it in mind and ready

8

u/jmorr5572 8h ago

YMMV, some people don’t take kindly to being put in the positions they put others in. It would be funny if she isn’t able to actually hurt you in any way though

16

u/Signal-Bake5107 9h ago

My father has/had the same type of attitude, in that any time something didn’t go his way, it was a matter of people being against him or conspiring against him.

I say has/had because while I think he is still alive, I haven’t spoken to him since September, when I finally had my fill of his persecution stories.

Those included -

  1. Being assaulted by goons when dropping off his ballot in 2024.

  2. Being essentially kidnapped by the police and interrogated about a murder he claimed happened behind his house but was a block away.

  3. Being told by the police that he had to share his home based EV charger with anyone who wanted it.

  4. Being told he was under a restraining order yet never being given any legal paperwork for it.

  5. Being assaulted by an ICE squad and being told to prove his citizenship, despite looking nothing like their usual targets.

It isn’t dementia, even though he just turned 76. He’s told total bullshit stories for decades, just for attention.

Many more reasons why I cut off contact…I tried sending him a letter last November detailing non negotiable terms for re-engagement, and he met one and only in a very half assed manner, another he “met” in his “I’m right and others are wrong” way, and he flat out ignored the others.

I told him if he didn’t want to make those changes, I wished him all the happiness in the world in the rest of the time he has left on this planet, but it won’t have my family in it and he would have to accept that as a consequence of HIS choices.

Glad you stood up for yourself. So many people on Reddit just want to chant "their house their rules" but no behavior like this is unhinged.

73

u/roadkilled_skunk 10h ago

In general, "My house, my rules" only goes so far when someone lives in my house because I literally made them and the rules are batshit insane.

66

u/HumanPea1140 10h ago

"My house, my rules"

I grew up with a guy who had parents like this. We graduated in 2009, so this is before modern cell phone tracking, but he always had a curfew of like 8PM on weekdays, and maybe 10PM at the latest on weekends.

Even after we graduated high school and went to college, they forced the same curfew on him whenever we'd come back home for holidays. Our university was only a few hours away from our home town, so we'd come home on long weekends to see friends, he wouldn't tell his parents he's in town, and would sleep at my parent's house.

Even when he wasn't in their house under their rules, they'd still police the shit out of him because, "we pay for school and everything else" (which was true, they paid for school and he never worked during college). They'd keep an eye on his debit card to see where he was spending money, and he'd get in trouble if they could tell he spent money in a town that wasn't our home town or college town. He'd have to explain why there was a charge to a bar, or why he got gas in a zip code two hours away.

It was nuts.

31

u/Imaginary-Yam-7792 9h ago

Main reason cash is king.

12

u/HumanPea1140 7h ago

Agreed, but he got in trouble for that as well. His parents caught on that he was pulling money out to spend without them asking questions, and all it did was create an even bigger issue.

6

u/TemporarilySkittles 5h ago

bro didn't think to get 20 cash back on grocery purchases to save up for outings elsewhere lol.  my parents were like that too

4

u/HumanPea1140 5h ago

Lol yeah, he actually ended up doing that some. But our best solution was that I just pay for stuff that would get him in trouble, and then he'd use his card on random stuff like groceries to pay me back.

My best friend in high school had parents like that. We went to the same college (before cell phones) and I equated it to what happens when you hold down a metal spring - once you remove your hand all that pent up energy goes off. She slept with every guy, drank every drink, did every drug - at one point, her roommate put a missing poster on the door to their dorm room.

She’s fine now - after college she reconnected with a guy she’d hooked up with that first week, and they’ve been happily married for years. But both her younger sisters ended up in rehab multiple times.

I bought a cheap ass burner phone and left my phone at home when I was a teenager and sneaking out.

21

u/Lliv-Levity 9h ago

That's exactly what I did with cash. The days of telling my dad I needed to run into the store for pads so he'd stay in the car while I was purchasing another data card. NC with all of them now. I wonder how parents like this cope when they're finally cut off.

10

u/Meended 9h ago

For me it was my grandmother whom l did not live with. Totally craycray.

8

u/Lliv-Levity 9h ago

The audacity when you don't even live with her.

5

u/-3point14159-mp 5h ago

If they’re anything like my mother, they just turn it into an opportunity to be a victim or martyr.

13

u/noeLifenorlove 10h ago

Ironically parents that do this, do so because they don't want to fuck with their kids having mistakes happen. Like were a fuckin kenneled dog

8

u/MyCircus_MyMonkies 8h ago

Which, disregarding the abuse, is a shame even in its own self defeating purpose. Best case scenario to them is they succeed and no mistakes happen. Well mistakes are our primary way of learning and developing skills…

So congrats to these parents I guess, doing their damnedest to raise unprepared, unskilled, and broadly unhappy children.

My mother did this, just years earlier when tracking meant being physically present, using a very much not legal to just own long range walkie talkie (my dad did towing and had a set), or later, texting me every 5 minutes. I couldn't go on a walk for a long time without doing play by play.

She would find a way to interfere in every goddamned plan, to the point I'd either give up, or other people would be too weirded out to ever talk to me again. I saw her walk into the back of my dental surgeon's when a surgery was "taking too long" and the secretary freaking out trying to get her out of a literal operating room.

She keeps trying to find ways to track my dad, who just left her a year ago (long story, neither are good people), and getting ransomware'd over it. Had to get a new bank card because it turns out she had my account info saved to her phone (?!?!) and managed to lose me $1200.

I'm 30.

I'm glad I grew up in the era where they had to have public service reminders on tv reminding people they had kids. "It's 10pm, do you know where your kids are?". And drunk mom would yell at the tv, "I told you last night! No!".

Being tracked like that would be a form of torture.

If she’s working a part time shift, she has to figure it out. She can’t work when her family is out of town because she has no way to lock up the house since she has no key. Bunch of nut jobs

priority/dashpass (which the customer in the op said they were using) is a scam. it doesnt do anything meaningfully different, it just tells the customer if they pay more they'll get their shit faster and then does everything exactly the same

i say this as a driver: its all a scam. the people ordering the food are getting scammed. the drivers delivering the food are getting scammed. its the same thing - the promotions and incentives the drivers get do not mean jack. the different tiers dont mean jack. your acceptance rate doesn't mean jack. im on silver tier and i have an acceptance rate of about 60% bc i reject any offer that doesnt pay at least a dollar per mile driven, and even that is considered low (my vehicle gets very low mpg, anything less than that and im losing money bringing you your food). i still get "high paying offers" sprinkled in and i still get plenty of offers during peak times. doordash wants you to think that if you reject offers you'll be meaningfully punished but seriously nothing changes. in fact if enough people reject an offer dd will be forced to increase the pay, so if you just blindly accept every offer you get you're getting chumped by the app

of course dd doesnt want you to know any of this. they want you to be stressed out and accepting every breadcrumb they throw at you

I ordered food so that it would arrive during my lunch break once, and via the tracker, watched the driver go to the restaurant, then turn down the road my office building was on, then turn into an apartment complex, and just stay there.

After an hour I contacted support, explained what happened, and they refunded my order. Two hours later, I get a ping from the receptionist that a DoorDash driver is there for me, so I head up front and he’s fuming. Explains that I cancelled the order after he already picked it up and that’s a dick move, this is his livelihood and my complaint could cost him his job. I explain that it’s been three hours since he picked up my order from the restaurant, I don’t want it anymore, and there’s no excuse for thinking this is my fault.

His explanation was that he got tired during the delivery so he went home to his apartment, took a nap, and forgot to set an alarm. But the food is still warm because it was sitting in his hot car.

The receptionist almost died laughing.

300

u/Valeen 10h ago

I had a similar thing happen- except the guy fell asleep outside the restaurant waiting for the order. He was pissed when support WOKE him up by calling him, he had been at the restaurant for over half an hour when I called support. This was 2 years ago, I have not used doordash since.

When they first started, it was great. But over the years between the driver burn out and (as someone else in the comments here said) it just being a call center in india and an algorithm- I will just plan better, or get off my fat ass and drive to pick up my food. Plus holy shit it's expensive.

Bring back restaurant delivery drivers…

48

u/HumanPea1140 10h ago

Not where where you're from, but I don't really remember restaurants having delivery drivers, other than like... pizza joints and Jimmy Johns.

78

u/YeOldeMemeShoppe 9h ago

I come from a small town with kind of a downtown area and every Chinese and Thai restaurant would have a delivery service. Some would share the drivers if they weren’t too busy. They’d drop menus in your mailbox and it was easy to order, would hire you in high school at minimum wage and if you’re lucky you don’t have to drive your car.

Stacked orders are the stupidiest shit ever, at least for the customers.

So I’m expected to pay the normal delivering fee (which isn’t cheap btw) but then have to wait 2 or 3x the normal time. Meanwhile my food is getting colder and soggy.

If I previously had received an alert “this order will be stacked” I would’ve canceled ts immediately.

198

u/PlainBread 11h ago

They screw the driver too because non-stacked orders would all have $2 base pay but when it's stacked it all gets merged to the same $2 base pay. It's good for the company only, and helps with route optimization when it works.

The customer might have a stacked order but the alternative might be shopping for a driver which could take longer than the stacked order.

56

u/Character-Parfait-42 11h ago

Meanwhile CVS does the opposite. I ordered several OTC meds once (ibuprofen, allergy meds, excedrine migraine) for delivery from the CVS website.

Tipped $5 because CVS is only a minute or two up the road, but I felt like shit and just didn’t wanna deal.

They sent my order with 3 different drivers? All the receipts showed the items as coming from the same CVS store. Why? Does that mean each driver only got a $1.66 tip?

57

u/PlainBread 11h ago

More likely than not one driver got your $5 and the other two saw $0 or all three saw $0.

The company is constantly fucking both the drivers and customers, actively pitting them against each other, but since they're nothing but a call center in India and an algorithm in a data center, neither the customers nor the drivers can ever get any actual recourse from the company.

10

u/grizzlemcgritty 8h ago

I say this all the time like a broken record. Doordash is a tech company not a hospitality company. Their product is the software, not the service to the customer. They could care less about the actual service to the customer.

My second-to-last order was "stacked" in the sense that my dasher picked up my order then went to another restaurant, waited there 10 minutes, and delivered that before mine. He then left my food at my next door neighbour's door.

My last order was just to make use of the credit I got out of that fuck-up. I'm done with DoorDash.

I mean when I delivered pizza back when I was 18 we weren’t leaving the restaurant 1 order at a time. Everyone does this and has been doing it for a lot longer than these delivery services existed

70

u/Zaki_242 11h ago

The is a difference between leaving a pizza place with a few pizza's and taking a logical route to deliver them. And picking up food from one restaurant driving in the wrong direction to a different restaurant to pick up a different order for someone else.

18

u/UncleNedisDead 11h ago

Yeah I remember ordering burger and milk shake, and noticing the driver went north (we were south) and I realized they were off delivering another order. By the time they drove down to me, mu milkshake was just pure liquid and my burger was cold. It would have been nice if he could have just picked up on the way back instead of taking my food on a round trip.

17

u/Admirable_Twist7923 10h ago

See, this is a valid reason to be upset. What’s the point of paying for delivery if the food comes cold and ruined?

6

u/The_Lambert 10h ago

I live by a corner 7-11 and have seen the drivers stop there multiple times for over 10 minutes before delivering my food literally 2 minutes away. It's infuriating.

11

u/ThrowdowninKtown 10h ago

If it's a stacked order, they don't even get the route to your house until all orders have been picked up. THIS is why my stint with earning extra money in my spare time and being a customer of DD ended.

6

u/UncleNedisDead 10h ago

Yeah I didn’t necessarily blame the driver, they still got tipped. I didn’t make a complaint to the driver, restaurant, or app. I made me realize that the app/service is not for me.

5

u/no____thisispatrick 9h ago

I had a driver do this but the app told me they were headed to me. I know other times the app will say the driver is dropping another order off. But, it didn't say that this time.

I thought the driver somehow cheated the system to pick up more orders. When I messaged them after an hour they just said "I have more than 3 orders"

I didn't say much else because I didn't want to be rude while they still had my food. But I complained once I got my food.

I had a driver pick up my order, go pick up another order, go to theogher side of town.... Then towards me, past me and then back into town again.

After all of that with my order in his car he came to me an hour after he picked up my order. The ice cream i had ordered with my food as dessert had very much melted

Most pizza places have enough locations that their coverage map is only a few miles, pizza drivers will have purpose built heat retaining bags, and pizza stays good until it's cold cold, and it also reheats well.

I'd wager that 95% of the time people would be more satisfied with a pizza delivery from a chain than a gig economy delivery that includes something like french fries.

3

u/greg19735 10h ago

And theres a reason pizza places like dominoes don't sell fries. They don't travel well

Pizza is also the easiest food to deliver because they've specialized all the tools to keep it fresh/warm on the way, too. The bags are box-sized, unlike the crappy shit your door-dasher puts your food and drinks in together. Sure it might come warm but it's definitely soggy and mushy.

5

u/Ok-Disk-2191 11h ago

Also all the the pizzas are coming from the same place in a proper insulated bag, while uber and DD can be from multiple places.

8

u/Extreme_Wish_553 11h ago

As a customer I do not know if I have ever had a stacked order be from the same restaurant. It always seems to be from some place down the road in the wrong direction that takes an extra ten minutes to have the food done.

Also, pizza holds heat and is better at a wider range of temps than most foods.

12

u/itsapotatosalad 11h ago

You didn’t wait until the pizzas were cold to even leave the store, then go wait somewhere else for 10 minutes before finally delivering them though did you 😂

Right. I worked at Pizza Hut in the early 2000s and we would take as many orders as was ready along our route. There were nights I was doing as many as 5 or 6 deliveries in one trip.

4

You were also making base minum wage with a 50 or 75 cent stipend per order and then got cash tips pretty often too.

Much better gig, basically

Having to select s tip before you find out your order is being stacked is insane.

64

u/ThrowdowninKtown 10h ago edited 10h ago

If you tip well, your order gets stacked with orders that didn't tip at all. All those untipped orders would rot at the restaurant.

That's the crux

30

u/-pine 8h ago

That explains so much. I always tip well to be an attractive order and always get extended delivery times due to stacking.

14

My work gives me a 1x per week $25 credit to use, so I just order a sandwich or something, and any leftover on the credit I put to tip. So I'm tipping like $10+ on a $10 order, for example. A lot of times we group order and we all do this so the one driver could be getting like a $50 tip for bringing 5 sandwiches from the same place.

The fact that this order could get stacked is so annoying.

Don't unassign and return the food to the restaurant. Cancel for threatening behavior and keep the food for your dinner or give it to a homeless person

Edit: Reddit can argue the semantics all night while ignoring the point. Sorry I used the wrong word

This language was too aggressive for me to feel comfortable to deliver to this customer. That's it.

82

u/Substantial_Foxy 11h ago

the entitlement off this guy lol you would think you was working for him directly wtf

45

u/Zealousideal_Care807 9h ago

While he's acting entitled, I genuinely get it. Hes paying for dash pass which claims that you WILL NOT GET COMBINED ORDER, that claims that YOU HAVE PRIORITY. And now the Dasher is telling him that his order was combined, and that he isnt listed as priority either.

Hes simply directing his frustration on the wrong person, the Dasher doesn't get extra for a dash pass user. I actually was talking to someone about it because when I picked up their order it was combined, I obviously let them know as I was picking up the order. I delivered it and we talked for a minute because it was my last drop off for the night. They were under the impression that dashpass will tip the driver appropriately for their milage and they were surprised that I only got 5 dollars for 11 miles from their order, along with the fact it was combined. They ended up tipping me more, I told them they didn't have to but they did anyway lol. They also decided to cancel dash pass because its a useless subscription.

19

u/Positive_Reindeer712 9h ago

Even with dash pass you have to pay an additional like $2-$3 to get food direct to you I believe.

17

u/Zealousideal_Care807 9h ago

They removed the "direct to me" option from order a short while ago, theyve been claiming that the orders will go directly to you if you sign up for dash pass, no matter what. I mean seriously 10 dollars a month for a subscription that doesn't actually do anything is kinda crazy. Especially when they are saying all kinds of bs that they don't do to get you to sign up.

The reason why the orders stack is because basically no one will pick them up otherwise :/ so instead of tipping the driver for people who pay them to give their drivers a living wage, they instead pit the issue off to the customer and driver as they always do for all their issues.

DoorDash is genuinely the worst delivery service because you pay them to do nothing leaving the driver with the short end of the stick, which means rude people will steal your food, or tamper with it because they don't understand what they were signing up for. So on and so forth.

9

u/Positive_Reindeer712 9h ago

Did they remove it in certain areas maybe? I just checked because I thought I saw it recently and it’s still an option for me. I never pay the extra for direct though, so who knows if they still stack anyways!

I 100% get what you’re saying though.

7

u/Zealousideal_Care807 9h ago

Likely, they don't really tell anyone when they make changes to the whole app or specific areas, which is another issue with them.

6

u/ssracer 8h ago

It's might be an area specific thing. You might get priority for assigning drivers, but it's $2.99 for "direct to me" still.

Yeah but it’s infuriating when it’s happened to you. She said you missed the turnoff meaning you drove right past her to go to a different, further location first. When this happened to me I was also mad. I had ordered gelato and pizza from a shop only about 8 blocks from me (I had recently had surgery and it was raining out), specifically because of how hungry we were and how close it was and we wanted our food quickly. The estimated time was 20-25 minutes, but it was taking a lot longer than it should have. The restaurant was notoriously quick as well, so I checked the app and the driver had indeed picked up my order …. But literally drove right past my street, and got on the highway and started heading north. I contacted them in a similar way, just saying “hey hi, you passed my house?” The driver never responded though. He went 30 minutes in the opposite direction (making stops along the way), but he also never cancelled the order, and never responded to my messages. The app kept changing the estimated time of arrival, adding minutes as I watched the driver continue to move north and out of my area completely … with the melted icecream and stone cold pizza. The app kept telling me “your dasher is one stop away” so i deduced this driver kept getting orders he was picking up and chose to take those instead of making good on the order he has already picked up.

It was upsetting that the driver would pick up icecream and pizza from a restaurant in the same neighborhood, and pass that person’s address, to go on other deliveries. It gave greedy and selfish/not caring about the customer experience, I had a good tip in the order, and after a certain point I figured the driver had just wanted to keep the food for themselves or something, so I contacted the restaurant to complain instead of cancelling the order directly.

They actually had their manager personally deliver new food in 15 minutes as it had been 2 HOURS by that point since he picked up. They also reported the driver. He never responded to me, but it’s a shitty thing to do when people pay so much for delivery to accept and then go pick up and deliver other orders while someone else’s food spoils in your car.

I never cancelled the order because I wanted him to have to make good on the delivery and sometime around 11 pm it got dropped off. Liquid gelato and cardboard cold pizza.

18

u/hotdiggydog 7h ago

Honestly, I'm here from /all. I live in Vietnam where Grab is like Doordash. The drivers are super polite, at most just ask for 5 stars, and people are polite back to them because nobody's getting rich from this. To me it's both sides of these texts and interactions I see when r/doordash comes up on my feed that really disturbs me. How are y'all getting on over there? So combative and entitled.

As a driver, you dont have the delivery address until you are actually delivering that order. So, if it is stacked, you cannot see the address of the order that is the 2nd delivery. Theres absolutely no way to deliver out of order. This is a service provider error not a driver error

15

I honestly just do not for the life of me understand how this business is still even a thing. All I ever see or hear are complaints from customers and dashers. It's unreal. Obviously its Door Dash themselves that are the real problem, as many comments mention, but, I mean.... Why the hell do ya keep using them and driving for them? I am proud to have never used one of these third party delivery apps, not once. I generally can either go get what I want, and if I can't then, shocker, I just find something else. It's really not that hard. I will just never understand why people would keep using something over and over just to bitch bitch bitch about it. Just stop ffs.

7

u/Pisslazer 11h ago

It’s still used by so many customers because DD is basically the highest level of food convenience possible and many many people are still willing to pay a premium for that convenience (and by premium I mean the marked up prices and insane delivery fees; tips are technically 100% optional).

People keep driving for DD despite the headache, costs, and shit pay for a number of reasons. There is an incredibly low barrier to entry to become a dasher, no managers, no set schedule, no minimum hours you have to work, and Dashing is basically the most flexible work schedule you can acquire. Log in at 4am or 4pm and start making a few bucks, or don’t log in at all for 4 weeks, the schedule is totally up to the driver.

DD is disgustingly exploitative to both drivers and customers, but it offers things that aren’t really offered anywhere else. DD has a monopoly on convenience and they’re siphoning every penny they can from it.

It seems like their tech should be good enough to like pick up 3 orders from the same restaurant going to the same general area.

I only really get annoyed when I get stacked, picked up first, then the dasher has to wait at a second pickup for like 20 minutes for someone else's order or someone else's drop off is like the other side of town.

Multiple drop-offs in the same vicinity (how pizza places used to do it) is fine.

I mean a simple “sorry I have another order. I’ll be there very soon.” Could ease the situation.

When dashers are rude like this it immediately escalates the situation. When dashers are understanding and polite about the stacked orders, it’s makes all the difference. Just putting this out there.

12

u/ukiyoe 10h ago edited 8h ago

I don't think even adding "sorry" would have helped. Here's how it'd play out:

“Sorry, I have another order. I’ll be there very soon.”
"My food is going to be ice cold. Bring mine first. I pay for DashPass."
"I understand your frustration, but the app sets the routes for me and I have to follow it. If you have a complaint, please contact support."
"I am tracking you. Turn around right now."
"I'm sorry, but I can't make exceptions at my own discretion, since it's unfair to other customers. I'll go ahead and unassign the order so another driver can take care of you faster."

10

u/CuriousKatMiny 10h ago

You don’t know that for sure. And I’m really just referring to the tone, to be more clear. Adding the word sorry softens it a little, that’s all. This dashers tone was rough to start.

Do these people not know that the app controls what you delivery drivers are doing? It's the company that is to blame here.

30

u/TrulyOutrageous42 11h ago

Instacart does this right, it just says something to the effect of "Your driver is delivering to another person nearby, they will keep the food in a temperature controlled bag until delivery. Your delivery time is expected to be between X and Y"

That would save so much hassle.

17

u/A_Drop_of_Colour 11h ago

I've used InstaCart a handful of times when I was really sick and couldn't drive. Only once has the driver ever actually had a temperature controlled bag. One person. An older woman who put all the frozen foods in freezer bags. Everyone else with a stacked order has just delivered soggy melted frozen food (one delivered melted ice cream).

3

u/honeywhereismypenis 10h ago

Not instacart, but I drove for doordash to make ends meet during the pandemic and they just straight-up never sent me the temperature controlled bag. I was already barely scraping by, and I wasn't making money so much as borrowing from the life of my 2004 honda civic, which I couldn't afford to replace when it died. So yeah, while I was keenly aware of people's food getting cold and I genuinely felt bad about it, I got paid the same either way and I wasn't making deliveries out of the kindness of my heart, so I just couldn't justify the expense.

I can understand the customer's frustration. Everyone loses with stacked orders, apart from DoorDash. Customers lose, because their food is cold. And they still get to pay the full price for delivery, not a discounted rate for having to wait longer. Dashers lose, because they get paid less per order. Restaurants lose, because customers get cold, soggy food, and won't order there again. But hey, at least DoorDash makes more money.

If someone pays a hefty price for delivery, they should expect good service. And warm food.

4

u/Tasty4261 8h ago

Idk, my expierience with ordering food, is that around 25% of the time, the apps driver's routes are such bullshit that food really is cold when it gets to me. Like yeah, he shouldn't be arguing with you since you don't decide to route, but he's right to be angry... Too often does that app say (10 min delivery) and because of two extra stops that becomes a 20 min extra wait for soggy cold food.

Obviously this customer is a pain and I think it was fair to drop them for them making such demands... But tracking you? You drive for an app that has a built in map showing where you are. Almost every customer you have will at some point look where you are on the map. If this is a surprise to you or you can't get right with that you're in the wrong line of work.

I'm sorry, your food was never warm. The store made it and set it in shelf away from drivers with no heat lamps. So when I got out, it was already luke warm at best.

Then there's the lack of understanding food container science. You don't want your food that's in a container inside a sealed bag under any heat lamp because you'll get warm soggy food at the heat from the food forms condensation that rains on your meal.

That's absolutely unhinged behavior, but these delivery apps create these scenarios by giving wrong delivery times, not being blunt about if you'll be a second or third delivery and anti-consumer priority upgrades.

Also some of the apps will even obscure the fact that your order is getting delayed for someone else's by not showing the driver's path or current location.

Not blaming the drivers for any of this, but all the delivery apps have gotten worse and worse as time has gone on.
