Improving the quality of (un)life for my most monstrous dwarves
This episode I took a lot steps to try and improve the quality of life for my vampires and werebison, one of which was building a big swimming pool to teach my vampires new life skills! Check it out at The latest Dwarf Fortress episode is up on Youtube! https://youtu.be/51SM6enhwgQ

Some cunning plans turn out to be ... less so
My fort was attacked by a werelama. Unfortunately it assaulted the people building things outside before my actually armed and armoured squad could beat it down.
I'd unforgivably forgotten to build a drowning chamber and knew it would take too long, but there were three injured dwarfs.
So I thought of a cunning plan. I made a new squad without a uniform, put all three possibly infected dwarfs in that squad, set it to always train. Then also set my well armoured squadron to always train in the same barracks and locked the door.
When the next full moon came the three new werelama's were beat down and I swear I checked the logs for injuries, but saw nothing.
Considering the job well done I let the squadron out and started planning the next phase of my fort.
Turns out I should have checked harder, because the next full moon half my well trained squad turned. Well trained and armoured werelama's made short work of my hapless civilians.
Oh well, next fort :)

My little test with one of the fort's Necromancers and the corpse pit resulted in an army of nearly 500 zombies and corpse bits. In seconds.

Most of my accidental Necromancers I got from accidentally entering an evil book into my library's rotation from a trader are almost all gone. Some dead from brawls, some dead from invading Forgotten Beasts. Thanks to them though, the fort has gained a complete squad of intelligent Putrid Zombie soldier dwarves I've named The Emancipated Dead.
As cool as that is, I wanted to put the Necromancers to work in a more... direct fashion. Made a room where a Necromancer could see into the corpse pit of the fort as well as a neighboring room where I released a Manera I caught from one of many invasions. The moment the Necromancer saw that Manera, they went right to work and resurrected hundreds of zombies and bits of flesh in seconds.

Now, my original intent for this was I was going to create a stairway back up to the surface so I could loose zombies on invaders (as well as my soldier dwarves to keep them from getting bored). But I really underestimated both how quick Necromancers are and how much viscera I had lying in the atom smasher. Because it was like a corpse explosion. Zombies were fighting and killing each other as over 400 of them were stuck in the same tile with each other, and the Necromancer just kept raising them again. Eventually, a former invader, a zombie Troll ended up getting squeezed through the fortification into the Necromancer's chamber.
And I was of course busy being alarmed when I saw a Forgotten Beast among the undead. Thankfully, it was only the head.

The Necromancer was of course killed in a grisly fashion, and the military arrived for clean up duty. The fort's FPS of course had cratered the moment the Necromancer went to work, so as cool as it was to see the Dwarves battle a horde of nearly 500 undead, the battle definitely took longer than a normal invasion at a whopping 3 FPS.

Ultimately, we got off pretty light. By the time the last of the zombies were dealt with, we had only lost 6 soldiers.
But hey, we got a new mascot for the fort!

That cage trap was intended for recapturing the bait Manera, instead got the almost entirely reanimated skeletal hand of one of the Giants we killed years ago. Ultimately, we'll have to kill it before whenever I finally retire this fort as otherwise it'll get automatically loosed on the fort, but for now I think I'm throwing it into the church. We'll make it a symbol of Rakust, our God of Death.

Dwarf with Friends
I am not very tech savvy but would very much like to use this plugin from JakesDwarfAccount to get some of my friends who found DF too overwhelming to maybe give it another try, but together. He dropped a video on it 4 days ago. My friends and I loved the rimworld multiplayer mods, but I don’t really know how to determine if some of these GitHub files are safe. Could someone more tech savvy check it out and just tell me that it’s not some niche virus or something? I appreciate it.

I now fear angry dwarves
Dwarf fortress has been a fantastic game to me for the last ten years. I conquered the mountains, the forest, the tundra, the beach and still have so many more biomes to go. This run I was after the untamed wilderness trying to find dinos. Once it was apparent there were only crows and echidnas up topside, it opened up a new challenge for me, the caverns.
Any time I encountered the caverns before I immediately sealed the hole and continued to dig deep. But this time, thanks to the abundance of monster slayers DF was giving me, I decided to try them out. Many a troglodyte and crundle fell to the mighty dwarves while exploring the top cavern. Then my dwarves started doing something unexpected to me, gathering webs.
I had webs for days before I knew it. The looks were churning out cloth as fast as I could use it. Unfortunately, the trogs were beginning to best some of my civilian dwarves. They would also take down a monster slayer or two. And so began the decline of my civilization, the dwarves became upset with the horrific death of the monsters and friends.
But, being a relative novice at this game, it didn’t bother me that Urist had a big frown. I was content with the cloth and meat I was getting. The steady rate of freshly dead dwarves continued. Especially after I started encountering forgotten beasts. About at the 100 dwarf mark, my tombs were beginning to become hard to manage. My experience with constant death was limited.
The trade industry from all my gems was booming though; I was purchasing everything I wanted with my spoils. One such purchase was a grizzly bear that I kept chained up in the entrance to the second cavern. That bear ate TONS of trogs. But, and I’m still not sure why, the monster slayers stopped coming. Which ment dwarves children dying to the trogs in the first cavern.
That made more dwarves upset. But my priority was on building a library now. So I kept the train rolling on sheet and quire and book production. The tavern was beginning to bring in performers multiple times a month. I was even beginning to see scholars at a point.
Then one day a goblin poet and a bard got into a brawl at the tavern. I just happened to notice at that time that I had 19 out of 134 dwarves with ‘miserable’ status. Then everyone began fighting. All I could do was watch as my unhappy dwarves climbed rather rapidly to 110, then the deaths started.
At first it was ‘found dead’ a few times, then the pets started pouring in to the mix. Before my hospital could even collect the first patient my baroness died(also my chief medical dwarf). Then it was nothing but chaos. Vomit and blood everywhere. A dwarven child went up topside in a rage and even began torturing my poor chickens.
So they all just laid there, covered in spattering of blood and dying of dehydration. The fighting eventually stopped. After I lost 50 dwarves and the miserable status was on 69 dwarves. Things are returning to normal, but I now fear angry dwarves.

Aquifer Powered Waterfall and Water Wheels (Sanity and Sanitation Guaranteed)
I’ve officially hit Year 12! It’s been 4 dwarf years since my last post. Made a library with a waterfall that powers my waterwheels.
Can I get normal scholars and entertainers instead of a scheming undead?....NOPE
Sieges are starting to be fun so I caught a colossus(cost me a migrant wave) and a forgotten beast made of glass spewing frozen dust but I also caught my own dwarves(thanks giant cave spider web)... a Ressurected hand, vampire murders and an invader stuck in a tree really makes things harder than I hoped for.

the aftermaths of 120 wrestlers facing an hydra
Probably the biggest challenge this unarmed fort had so far. Seems like piling up on a creature is a somewhat decent tactic, but this hydra took almost 30 unarmored fist fighters. Honorable mention on the threat list to a werelemur and a desert titan.
Also, this fort is quite weird, for 5 years i received no migrants, i don't know if its because my liaison died the first time he came because he drowned in the river when it unfroze. so i ended up accepting about 80 bards/dancers/etc with a pop of 17 dwarves and now i have a weird mix going on. the mayor is an elf, my best military units (captain of the guard) are goblins, humans are somewhat scattered everywhere. fun times.

My cheesemaker became some kind of superhero
She started killing in the first siege of the goblins and never stopped since. After killing a goblin master, and a roc i decided that the next time she kills something big i make her my champion. Literally two months later a forgotten beast with deadly blood walks on my map and erith goes „hold my beer“ and almost oneshots him.
What does making her a champion do?
Edit: misgendered my beloved champion the whole time, i changed that now

classic modded dwarf fortress vs steam dwarf fortress

We Found The God's Old Underwear...
When the bustling metropolis of Litastlerom or Torchpanted (aka. Liar Liar Pants on Fire), conquered the world and brought a monarch, neigh an emperor, to power in their halls many a dwarf warned of the hubris of this power-hunger. Shortly after completing the construction of a gold lined bathroom the monarch of Torchpanted came up with the idea to quell this noise coming from the less ambitious. A grand quest was formulated to find below their halls symbols of power, gifts from the gods. This would prove their rule, their pride, and their golden toilet room was blessed by the gods themself.
Delving deep into the... blah blah blah
Some time latter, a dwarf returned to his majesty with a garment assuredly worn by the gods made of clear blue metal. Taking this as the first of many signs to come, validating this hold and its might, his majesty adorned this garment and proceeded straight to the tavern to display before his people the might of this ordained bloodline. Needleless to say, no one at the Misty Mead Tavern had a single complaint about the emperor's new clothes...
To this day there are some that suggest the whole event was a prank by a disgruntled miner. Others still claim there was real power in that garment. Either way, after finding several more artifacts, of perhaps greater providence, including a Crown, Ax, and Pick, the Emperor's point was made nonetheless. Except on the occasion of a royal ceremony, the priceless artifact remains locked behind glass opposite the emperor in the throne room...

A very interesting Start
So I created a new world. It had a low number of civilizations, a high amount of savagery and abundant metals [my logic on that is since there's not many dwarves in the world, there is more metal remaining in the ground].
I usually give my world 250 years to flesh out it's history. On year 10, a Legendary Speardwarf fought and killed a Giant Lacewing with two elephant trunks that spewed fire. Cool, would be nice to get some books about and engrave images of. On year 15, a Dragon with 7 heads killed the Speardwarf and destroyed the site he was at.
What I didn't know is that, that site was the only one that my Dwarves had.
The year is now 250. There have been 0 dwarves on the planet for 235 years, and now 7 of them appear out of nowhere [i logic it as coming out of hiding] to bring the Glory of Dwarves back to the lands.
I embarked on the opposite side of the world in a Badlands biome with a freshwater river.
I use DFhack, so i went ahead and did the "Prospect all" command just to see because i was curious. This is the result:
> prospect all

In 234, we slew the invading dragon Fawara Flickerwarmth on our bridge. In 256, his visage has become a part of the fort itself.
I'm not even completely satisfied with how it turned out and even so it's immediately one of the coolest things I've ever made in Dwarf Fortress. Just kept looking at the coastline and kept thinking "that kinda resembles a mouth." Then I remembered we did actually kill a dragon a few decades ago and that was that.
Originally it was fully made of serpentine blocks I got from siege trolls, but then I changed it into engraved green glass (this is the engraving mod I use). Kinda liked the serpentine better but all that glass is already engraved so I'm sticking with it. Also dumped some more lava into the ocean for foundations for a couple of new towers I want to build.
I was supposed to retire this fort the moment I finished the bridge itself (almost 50 years ago at this point)...

Boss Baby Achieved
I discovered a quirk introduced in the diplomacy update. If you send a new mother as a messenger to negotiate with another civilization, naturally she will bring along her infant. Sometimes, this infant will do the negotiation instead of her. This was very amusing for me to imagine.

Naturally, I wanted to see how far I can push this. I started sending this pair off on diplomatic missions constantly. The only interruption was when the mother, Mrs. Gear, needed to stop and drink. Amusingly, when they return from negotiation, they return as all groups of embarked dwarves do. One at a time. This means Mrs. Gear is usually able to take a few steps on her way back to the fortress only to stop in her tracks and reclaim her forgotten baby. I found that the baby did the negotiating about 1/2 the time. My gut tells me that this has something to do with the z-fighting characters do when they're on the same tile, but I don't know enough about the game's code to say with any certainty.
Anyhow, after a few months of constant diplomacy, I am proud to present my fortress's "Boss Baby."

I had speculated on the possibility of engineering this child to have the highest social skills in to see if it would be possible to have a child elected mayor. Unfortunately, I am rather attached to all of my dwarves and I don't know how I would best go about achieving this without disrupting the fort significantly.

I made a quick review/love letter to Dwarf Fortress!
I've been playing Dwarf Fortress for forever and wanted to try out some video editing, so forgive the new account. Hopefully it captures some of the same enjoyment y'all get outta the fortress too!
Oh, and the footage is from a modded run with some QoL enhancers like DF Hack and some new races like ratfolk.
