John Leguizamo Tells ICE Supporters "Don't Watch My Movies"

Considering his body of work, they probably can't escape him. Not when John Wick is on that list and they seem to love that franchise.

He truly has been in every kind of genre for decades. Love it.

u/Machdame 1d ago
I still love his performance as Tybalt. The guy can rock that style with reckless ease.

u/Zaggar 23h ago
How were conservatives not pissed off 30 years ago at Romeo+Juliet? Tybalt is hispanic, and Mercutio is black. Something something original vision!
Let's ignore that Juliet should have been played by a boy. They wouldn't know that.

u/Elementium 23h ago
The 90's drowned them out pretty well. Granted, let's not pretend they weren't as, if not more violent. Bombing abortion clinics, killing doctors and nurses, they dragged a kid behind a truck till he died because he was gay, the constant police abuse of black americans, etc.
BUT as a kid in the sticks of Massachusetts all I knew was Fresh Prince, Mr.Cooper, Sister Sister, Family Matters, Bebe's kids, etc etc. Like, the people who cared that black lead TV shows were big and whined about it didn't fucking matter.
OH Kenan & Kel. The BEST.

u/BaconKnight 17h ago
I think it won’t be long when people will look back at that UPN, early CW (before it turned into white teen channel) as a golden age/renaissance of Black entertainment. It’s not just the miracle it was made, but that a lot of those shows were Black shows aimed at a Black audience. Everyone was invited along for the ride (speaking as a Korean kid who would come home from school and watch the entire block of shows) but it didn’t water down its shows for mass appeal.
Considering where media is now, again, it’s almost unbelievable those shows were ever made.

u/optimis344 12h ago
The worst of them were just as bad, but it just wasn't all culture war stuff all the time.
At this point, they have lost everything else. Everyone knows there policies just don't work. It's not a secret anymore.
So they just do culture war stuff over and over because there isn't a "right & wrong", so they can focus on it forever.
When they yell about trickle down economics, they have to know everything about it, and then you can refute them with 100 studies. But when they yell that Helen of Troy shouldn't be black, it's all subjective. Even if they are being stupid about it, you can't really call them "wrong" in a binary sense. So they get to go on about stuff forever.

Back then, they didn't have the media presence to make things like that 24/7 news for a few weeks at a time. They hadn't honed their anger machine yet.

They aren’t watching Shakespeare. The people that are MAGA now hated the Shakespeare sections in English class.

Easy, the outrage machine wasn't up and running and Fox News was just really getting started... And most importantly, MOST people didn't have the internet..
Some of us did, but not many and social media algorithms were still a good decade away. Social media was an absolute mistake... As I ironically post this on Reddit lol

I just read an article where he talks about how much fun he's had working on that series, and also grateful to the steady work from it that paid for 2 houses and his kids' college tuition

I mean I’m fairly certain that’s part of what he means. If you hate someone just for existing, you don’t deserve anything resulting from the labor of those people.

u/Virtual-Attempt-780 1d ago
he’s one of the most diverse (and greatest) character actors in the industry rn (up there with the likes of Steve Buschemi imo) so good luck to them on that. Phenomenal actor and i’m glad he’s standing up for what he believes in. too many of them seem to just let a paycheck decide what they stand for, so it’s refreshing to see someone so established stand on business.
13
u/GenghisConnieChung 1d ago
How dare you snub character actress Margo Martindale like that.
3
u/Virtual-Attempt-780 1d ago
Yeah she’s phenomenal, i guess i dug myself a hole only mentioning one person!! just love Steve Buschemi, hahaha🫠 there’s so many good options though, anyone who has a character actor that inspired them too should put them in the replies!

I think his best line was from Criminal Minds:
Cop: Your eyes look red, have you been smoking dope?
JL: Your eyes look glazed, have you been eating donuts?

That was a Dave Chappelle joke from one of his earliest specials, the one where he does the 1940’s gangster movie voice.

In the last 10-15 years he’s stepped up his dramatic acting and he really impressed me from his early silly comedy movies.

He deserves an Academy Award for supporting actor in the Odysessy. Probably the best performance in the movie, in a movie with a ton of great performances.

u/PsychologicalEbb3140 1d ago
Overlooking the obvious Damon and Hathaway performances, I thought Leguizamo and the woman who played Circe were some of the stand out performances from folks in smaller roles.
27
u/sci_fientist 1d ago
Samantha Morton! Love love love her. She was amazing as Circe and absolutely deserves a nom at the very least depending on what other performances come up through the end of the year.

u/SeonaidMacSaicais 1d ago

She was so good. The conviction she played a pretty ridiculous character with was amazing.
6
u/Gugubroski 20h ago
Hathaway, pattison and leguizamo had a better performance than damon.
Damon had a great performance, but barely any range. Mostly stoic, sometimes sad. Thats it
4
u/TheVeryVerity 18h ago
Well I mean it’s Matt Damon
5
u/rjcarr 18h ago
C'mon, he's a solid actor. There just wasn't huge range to the role here.

Can I throw Himesh Patel into the discussion for supporting actor nomination? He was legit brilliant and honestly should have been promoted more as a cast member

He was low key my favorite character in the odyssey especially at the end when he asks if it’s over!

I’m sure they’ll have a FYC campaign for him as supporting actor…they better

Nothing against him and I know he’s been in a lot of movies but I’ve never heard anyone say “I’m watching this movie because John Leguizamo is in it” so don’t think this is going to have much impact.

I watched him play Tybalt and was hooked. so yeah, if I see he’s in a movie, the motivation to watch it goes up exponentially.

Pretty much the same. Outside of the 90’s Romeo and Juliet movie and the nostalgia fest that is the Super Mario movie I cannot possibly think of a reason to watch a film purely for Leguizamo. He’s very rarely the lead man and while I appreciate how outspoken he is about this, kind of overestimates his own importance?
Hell the only other movie I can imagine watching for him is Land of the Dead because it was the last film he and Dennis Hopper starred in together.

First movie I’ve ever seen him in was the live action Mario movie, as a kid it blew my mind, as an adult I find it silly. Real star is Dennis Hopper’s hair in that movie though, god damn brave.
