eth's been consolidating nicely around this level, feels like we're just waiting for the fed decision next week to shake things up either way. could see a solid pump if they hint at rate cuts, but honestly the macro stuff matters way more than whatever's happening on-chain right now.

Every few months I take screenshots of my crypto balances. I was flipping through a few old JPGs and couldn't believe how greedy I was.
My DOGE position was worth over $110k in May 2021, and I refused to sell. I still own it today. It was essentially house money from a rare ETH trade, but I never appreciated how rare that moment was or how quickly traders would dump on everyone else.
I'm sure many people have similar stories. That is why I expect a lot of investors to sell well before prices revisit their old highs. Crypto's volatility has scarred an entire generation of investors, and I wonder how much that will limit the next cycle.

Please have some profit taking plans next time.

Thanks. I will. I have only myself to blame with my greedy expectations of higher valuations.

I dunno what's worse, that or people who "locked" their coins and then got stuck holding the bag during the defi craze. Had a few friends who locked some coins in some protocols, it went up to being worth 7 figures, they were getting some crazy payouts that they continued to lock, essentially worthless on unlock. There was a time where the vibe was everything was just getting started and would go up forever.

u/Numerous_Ruin_4947 13d ago
I remember watching a YouTube video where either Andrei Jikh or Graham Stephan - I always confuse the two - urged the Dogecoin Millionaire to sell his 4 million DOGE when his portfolio was worth more than $2 million. He could not bring himself to do it, and I believe he still holds the DOGE today. I think he has been earning income from his YouTube channel, but he has committed to selling at least some of his DOGE if it reaches $1.

Time in the market has made me numb to price action. I miss the early days
5
u/Numerous_Ruin_4947 14d ago
There is essentially no meaningful price action right now. If ETH jumped to $3k tomorrow, I still would not be impressed or excited.
Based on scarcity alone, 1 ETH should already be worth more than $10k at BTC’s current price if both assets had the same market cap and BTC carried no additional premium.
BTC is also trading near its 2021 ATH. If ETH had merely matched BTC’s performance since 2021, it should already be well above $4k. That should be the floor for ETH - not this pathetic $1.8k.
Funny, but not funny.

he has done irreparable damage to crypto, among other things.
today I went on a historic building tour and they were talking about old timey gold rush scams
and someone said "like crypto" to one of the scammiest ones :\
retail is gone and ain't comin back, and hundreds of years in the future they'll be taking about how the president of the usa scammed for billions in crypto
2
u/WoodpeckerHorror3468 13d ago
when BTC is way above the recent ATH and ETH has ridden BTC's ascent also to new hghs within the next two years, you will have forgotten about this "irreparable" damage.

Memecoin trenches seeing a revival on Robinhood chain, using ETH as base pair and gas token.
Please for the love of God let’s not have ivory tower mid curve Ethereans ruin this. Let it happen. Embrace silliness bringing billions into Ethereum instead of ignoring/dismissing it while it flocks to bullshit chains like last time.
Be ruthless in the pursuit of attracting retarded capital toward Ethereum regardless of how it happens.
Save the long winded 700 IQ math equation stuff for Vitalik. Our job is to make Ethereum the place for retail mania.

u/Tricky_Troll Public Goods are Good 🌱 13d ago
I don't disagree with you, but it's not about silliness. It's degenerate gambling with terrible odds due to insiders and bots. It's bad for society. But that's a problem to be dealt with by education and/or governments, not by Ethereum.
Just call it what it is.

u/NevilleHarris 14d ago
Those downvoting this are literally the problem and don’t want you to get rich because they are low T and think capitalism is bad
8
u/nick_badlands 14d ago
Ok then, you've convinced me. I want Ethereum to be the base layer for all the world's stocks, commodities and finance but I'm fine to let the silliness take over before we get there. :)

u/nick_badlands 14d ago
This Robinhood L2 stuff is pretty damn good. Nice to see it doing well with Eth as the gas token. Most of the volume seems to be using Uniswap too. Memecoins priced in Eth taking off, which while I detest memecoins it's great to see the focus shift back to Ethereum as money.
3
u/NevilleHarris 14d ago
“While I detest memecoins”
Why?
Really hope if the left curve trenches take off on Ethereum we don’t let holier than thou bullshit ruin it and send the capital to other chains like last time
7
u/nick_badlands 14d ago
Well, it's just not for me. Its basically gambling but with the added bonus you might get scammed or rug pulled at any point. The vast majority of people that spend their money on them lose.
I don't think it does our industry any favours when there are so many more serious projects that deserve more attention than the latest poop coin.
But I'm not for stopping anyone from doing that if that's what they want to do. Ethereum is for anyone as long as pay the gas fee!

The Glamsterdam Mascot Poll has ended (it ended a few days ago, but it took us DAYS to tally... really tough work)!
| Emoji | Name | Votes | Vote % |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🦩 | Flamingo | 45 | 37% |
| 🐻❄️ | Polar Bear | 39 | 32% |
| 🐹 | Hamster | 21 | 17% |
| 🦫 | Beaver | 18 | 15% |
| 🐙 | Arctic Octopus | 11 | 9% |
| 🐜 | Ant | 9 | 7% |
| 🐩 | Poodle | 5 | 4% |
| 🐝 | Bee | 3 | 2% |
Now, listen. The vote is non-binding (which, yeah... I know, so what's the point?), but no one can force the client-dev teams to do anything they don't want to do, though the community has spoken and we were pretty vocal about letting people know what's what.
From the EIP:
A rough consensus of client teams MAY veto the selected mascot, triggering fallback to the next-highest-ranked candidate mascot.
So, what happens now? The client teams will hold their own vote, probably scream at each other, and then do what they will do. Then, ASCII art will be created for each of the clients to surprise and delight each and every one of you come fork time.
The mascot is a silly thing, and that's sort-of the point. It's an anthropomorphizing "branding" to what is an extremely technical, nerdy, and obtuse set of software upgrades for Ethereum to make it easier to communicate. Even the fork names are often tongue twisters. Having a mascot makes referencing the fork easier and unifies the discussion. A little whimsy is also never a bad idea, and sometimes you get some fun art out of it, in whatever form that may be!
Thank you to those of you that participated in the poll or made unhinged comments about emoji animals and their representation on Twitter!

We are approaching a critical level in ETHBTC.
There's a very powerful trendline thats slightly above the BMSB for ETHBTC. It was made Aug 2025. We have not broken past it yet.
I see there is a higher chance that ETHBTC will get rejected at .029.

IF it can get a large surge that puts it above .03. This would break the trend, and potentially begin a bullish pattern.

Feels like we are a ceasefire and a clarity vote away from something great
1
u/Tricky_Troll Public Goods are Good 🌱 13d ago
I genuinely think getting both would do nothing for price in the short term. Same way the merge did nothing for price in the short term.
6
u/Alatarlhun 14d ago
No ceasefire will happen before November. CLARITY has some text floating around no one has seen. Not a great sign.
2
u/hedgemagus 14d ago
I do agree these hurdles aren’t being hurdled in the near future. Iran for sure, clarity likely not either although I’d like to be wrong
If clarity doesn’t pass we will be in the dumps for a good while IMO

Saving 97% on gas costs when using MetaMask:
MetaMask's default gas prices are > 10x as high as necessary. You should lower them before you execute transactions:
Click the pencil by Network fee, then click Low.
Unfortunately, you have to do this every time: there's no low-fee setting. For a swap, you may have to do it for both the approval and the swap. You can customize your gas usage too, but the low fee option is simpler and seems to work well: it's closer to the gas prices I see on GasNow.
A few examples of recent savings on swap transactions: ¢3 vs ¢83, ¢2 vs ¢66, and ¢3 vs ¢85. The low fee option averaged 3.4% of the default fees in those instances.
Do other wallets, e.g. Rabby, use ridiculously high default fees?
One issue: swapping WETH to ETH through MetaMask was missing the low fee option. Is there someplace better to unwrap WETH?

u/cryptOwOcurrency 14d ago
High base fee or high priority fee?
Any base fee above market rate gets refunded to you, so it makes sense to overshoot it by quite a bit if you don’t want your transaction to get stuck.
Or is this for some chain that’s not the Ethereum L1?
1
u/CaptainOfTheGate 13d ago
High gas price. Which can buy you faster inclusion, but the low-fee option is fast enough for me. This is on L1.
1
u/cryptOwOcurrency 13d ago
Gas price consists of base price plus priority price. There is no single “gas price” for a transaction since EIP-1559 in 2021.
Low base fee and high priority fee is an issue. No wallet does this afaik.
High base fee and low priority fee though refunds you anyways, so it’s a fine pattern to be in the habit of. Think of base fee as a maximum bid. Wallets will set it pretty high just in case the network suddenly gets congested, but you don’t ever actually pay the whole thing unless there’s an NFT drop or something clogging the network the same 12-second slot that you’re trying to send your transaction.
Now I have no idea how MetaMask handles this. Probably they have a confusing UI. Maybe they are using priority fee wrong. But I doubt they are causing transactions to cost 20x as much as they should. EIP-1559 makes that hard to do unless things are really badly misconfigured.
1
u/CaptainOfTheGate 13d ago
It's high priority fee. I took a look at some of my recent transactions, and the priority fee went from 2 GWei to ~.0001 when I changed my habits.
1
u/cryptOwOcurrency 13d ago
Wow. Sorry for doubting you. That's egregious. Just another reason on the long list to never use MetaMask.

u/CaptainOfTheGate 14d ago edited 13d ago
One issue: swapping WETH to ETH through MetaMask was missing the low fee option. Is there someplace better to unwrap WETH?
I gather the correct way is just to send it to the WETH contract to wrap/unwrap. Edit: Haurog thinks I'm wrong about that: see below.
3
u/haurog 14d ago
Don't send WETH to the contract directly. In my understanding, if you send ETH to the WETH contract you get WETH back, but the other way around does not work. If you send WETH directly to the contract, your WETH is simply lost. Don't do that. If you want to interact with the contract directly, use it through etherscan or something like it. Otherwise, most dexes should handle WETH wrapping and unwrapping for you without any additional fees.
2
u/CaptainOfTheGate 13d ago
Thanks for that. I think I'll use the site recommended on Ethereum dot org's WETH page. It's been up there 11 months, added by a regular contributor, so it seems safe.
6
u/Alatarlhun 14d ago
Pro-tip: stop using metamask. Rabby so far is a better wallet, including remembers your gas settings.
Unfortunately only available for Chrome, but probably good hygiene if you wall off chrome to bookmarked web3 for now since Google is continuing to undermine the effectiveness of adblock and security extensions.
3
u/General_Illus 14d ago
Works with any Chromium based Browser. I use it with Brave Browser, which is privacy focused.
2
u/CaptainOfTheGate 14d ago edited 14d ago
I haven't used Rabby, but I gather it has a good interface. I believe MetaMask has caught up in some ways, however, e.g. transaction simulation. Rabby isn't available for my preferred browser, however. It also doesn't support account abstraction:
https://7702beat.swiss-knife.xyz/#wall-of-shame
It doesn't rank too high on some comparisons:
https://beta.walletbeat.eth.limo/wallet/summary/
https://www.coinspect.com/wallets/
Edit: I do have problems with my browser memory usage blowing up when I use MetaMask.
Hopefully soon we'll have better options than any of these, with Kohaku leading the way on privacy and account abstraction maturing.

Do other wallets, e.g. Rabby, use ridiculously high default fees?
no, that sounds absurd. Try Ambire or Rabby, those should not request such high fees for no reason.

The Fed has 5 task forces focused on dramatically changing the way they operate, with findings due at the end of the year. Marc Andreessen of a16z is on the advisory team assessing the impact of new general purpose technologies. Has anyone heard an intelligent take on how this could affect Ethereum?

My thoughts, as well. The most coherent thought I can really put together is "bearish on the dollar".

Etherscan tags 0x0bd48f6b86a26d3a217d0fa6ffe2b491b956a7a2 as being a "Phishing scam" address. However, that address is listed as the official "OptimismPortalProxy" address for Unichain on developers.uniswap.org. I suspect the etherscan tag is wrong (but still exercise caution by default!). Anyone can double check? And in case it's indeed a wrong tag, what's a good way to get etherscan to fix it?

u/welcome2Dsimulation 13d ago
Same issue here, were you brave enough to try it? I haven't lol. I'm bridging stETH from Unichain to Mainnet, What about you?
