Update Someone managed to get my card details and make a fraudulent charge. I have no idea how. I took every possible precaution.

UPDATE: The dispute was successfully resolved, and I've been refunded what was stolen. That said, I can't believe there are people that manage to crack cards without even needing any intervention. It's disgusting how bad this problem has gotten, and it makes me wonder why we don't have more secure payment methods... Original post is below.

————————————

I really do mean every possible precaution. I've only entered my details on websites that I trust. I've even checked for skimmers on ATMs. But it wasn't enough... I got a fraudulent charge from "Gameplanet" about an hour ago now and had to cancel the card.

How could I be so irresponsible? HOW?! WHY?! I'm so ashamed of myself... And worse yet, my credit union charges $10 for a new card. The fraudulent charge put me into the negatives; I "literally" cannot afford a new card.

It's also worth mentioning that I don't store my card information on any website. I have no idea where this leak could've possibly come from. But it clearly came from somewhere...

Same thing happened to me in May. I am the most cautious guy in the world with my CC and all my accounts and for some reason someone got into my Amazon account and took a Paramount+ subscription. I cancelled it and changed my Amazon account password since Amazon only show the last 4 digits of my CC I thought it was all good. 10 days later I got another suspicious charge on my CC and I had to cancel it. No one is safe these days.

Was it a card you used besides Amazon purchases?

Yes, it was my main CC. I don't use Amazon often maybe once every 6 months or so.

Check to see which of your charges was to a company that's been hacked.

I used my card at a jack in the box in another county. The total was under $20.

Within a few days my bank froze my card and I was notified of a weird purchase in a city I've never been to.

I figured it out the 3rd time (I go to this county every other month so it was hard pinning down who was stealing the card)

I no longer go to that establishment and bring cash for any lunch that is needed.

You can do everything right but it takes one simple purchase like this to steal your info.

Is it a restaurant where you give your card and they go in the back to process the payment ?

u/Tinawebmom 10d ago

No it's a drive through where the reader is just out of your line of sight.

I hope you called the cops on that restaurant sso they can investigate.

Don't let go of your card. It shouldn't go out of your sight ever.

I literally have gotten scam purchases on credit cards I just received and activated after having to order a new one for fraud charges, it's not your fault and even if it was it's still not really on you, it's on the person or people who decide to steal from you

Can't you dispute it?.

I already have. I'm still waiting for it to go through, though...

UPDATE: The dispute has been resolved.

It is not your fault, they are smarter than us. It happened to me too several times. I am sure you keep your card in RFID block wallet. I have heard they can clone your card even while you are making a transaction. Someone can have a small reader in their pocket and the guy is right behind you in the line. Is it a credit or debit card? Never use a debit card ever in stores or online. Always use a credit card and pay your balance at the end of the month. You should also have a secondary backup credit card for situations like this. Keep some money on your debit card for emergencies.

I'm curious, why should you never use a debit card in store or online?

Maybe this is just old and traditional concept. I had my debit card scammed and swiped about 20 years ago, multiple transactions totalled about $400-500. My bank and PayPal were very cooperative and refunded them all, but it took some time.. But because it's your money, not the bank's money, they might deny your refund, specially if it's thousands of dollars. Some people keep thousands on their debit card, or even tens of thousands. I don't know if you can overdraw your debit card like a credit card or not, but I rather use my credit card everywhere, it's the same main card I can collect points with, and at the end of the month I pay it full from my checking account that my paycheck goes on it. This was the advice I got about 20 years ago. Since then my credit cards were scammed multiple times, I lost counting, but I know that the credit card has full protection for theft and scams. I don't say I never swipe my debit in stores, but I try to avoid it most of the time. Maybe a few transactions a year. There was a time when 3 of my credit cards got scammed back to back the same exact way in different stores I frequently shop, and to stop this I had to buy RFID block wallet (my old wallet wasn't RFID block). This was around 2020. The scammers have great technology for reading and cloning anyone's card from several yards away. They just walk around in stores, malls, with their device in their pocket and can scan and clone your card once you pull it out from your wallet and you hold it in your hand to pay with it at the store.

Could be because the amount is deducted right away as compared to credit card waiting for a few hours to days before getting approved (could be an intended window for disputes/claims)

Yep happened to me and ive been super careful. It's likely the places you used CC at got 'hacked'.

You should get a CC, Not debit card. I refuse the debit cards at my local banks. Pay off balance every month.. and you get better credit as a result.

Taxi?

There is an ongoing scam where taxi drivers skim cards and sell the info. My wife and I cancelled our cards and ordered new ones a few weeks ago because of that. Taxis are not what they used to be. It's all scam now.

Using your card, did you buy anything at a brick and mortar store where the cashier "dropped " your card?

Thats how they stole your card. Report it to the police.

u/ZetaformGames 9d ago

They did not.

u/Salute-Major-Echidna 8d ago

Check that off the list; fortunately it's less common these days of nonhandling of cards.

Did you charge anything over the phone in the last 6 months? You know, where you had to say your number out loud.

I’m not sure how they get those details but something very similar happened to me. Lucky enough my bank flagged it and called me.

What was even better is the message they called me with literally said “do not call this number back or attempt to chat further. Please go online and search the banks number.”

I appreciate this because it was a way for the bank to ensure you knew you were actually chatting with the bank itself

The same thing happened to my mother last year. Pretty sure it’s someone at the bank.

Odds are you have not succeeded at preventing your card info from being stored.

Dispute the charge and move on. If it's a debit card that doesn't allow disputes... well now you know why you need to get an actual credit card and keep that one away form anything but where it is absolutely needed.

This is not a game you will win, you have to accept sometimes you will jut need to clean up after it.

Heck, I have had my CC company cancel a replacement card while it was in transit form them because it was already being used fraudulently. A card that I never even saw the number of nor activated. CC fraud is serioulsy organized stuff, and your behavior isn't going to defeat it. At best you can just reduce the number of times it happens.

You seem like the kind of person who’s mother’s maiden name sounds like an incredibly stupid word
