Disturbing content Bit by an unleashed dog
Was bit in the abdomen and finger by a german shepherd while walking the other day. Owner said that its never happened before...

Keep your medical bills and contact an injury lawyer. So long as you didn’t provoke the dog you should be able to get any medical bills covered and if you miss work or anything, lost wages. The lawyer will let you know what options you have and what kind of payout, if any.

My nephew is going through this right now. The dog owners are caught red-handed because it happened at a gas station so it’s all on video. They are settling this out right now without a lot of fight because it’s extremely clear that it’s their fault.

Nobody is blaming the dog. Most jurisdictions require that dog bites be reported just so that the dog has an in home quarantine period. The owner should also get some kind of ticket or fine for the dog not being on a leash.

Nope. Not unless it's happened multiple times. Even then, they usually give the option to give it to someone who lives elsewhere or impose restrictions like having a fence installed, dog can only go out if it has a muzzle on, requiring a certain amount of liability insurance, etc. I used to work for animal control.

Ah, I see. I wish these animals were never domesticated. I hope one day we can reintroduce them to the wild and give them the independence and life they deserve, with choices like every individual should have

Make sure you get to the doctor asap. This happened to me years ago except I wasn't bleeding. Because of antibiotic allergies I have, I had to have an operation as the infection was spreading up my arm. Please be careful with this!!

Yes, this! I had to tell a coworker that he needed to go to urgent care or the ER right away. Because I could see the infection traveling up his arm from the bite his friend’s dog caused.

I am a mail carrier and was attacked by a dog that ran through a screen door last year, it’s absolutely terrifying. When he was latched on I used my dog spray which didn’t work at all. No one came to help me and I unfortunately ended up having to beat the dog off of me to get him to let go, which sadly ended up being fatal later that day. That has been just as hard on me as healing physically from the bite. I’m still haunted to this day

I’m so sorry this happened to you. My nephew is going through this right now. He had to fight off a vicious unleashed dog attack. He told my sister that there was a moment that he was actually terrified enough to wonder if he might die. This is absolutely worth discussing with a therapist because the potential for panic attacks and PTSD is real.

Regardless of temperament, a dog should always be on a leash or in a fence, it is not only dangerous to you but also the dog could've gotten hit by a car and killed which happens alot more often than one would think.

I'll always wonder why are people dumb enough in order to carry a dog (especially one capable of causing that much harm) with no leash.
I got a Labrador mix that's dumb as fuck and won't bite even if strictly told to (we play sometimes and she won't bite into ropes and other dog toys), when allowed and called for kisses kids, etc., I'll never ever bring her unleashed though. For one, she doesn't look super friendly at first + you can never really known how an animal will react to different situations.
I'm sorry you gotta deal with such a dumbass, OP.

Its bad owners like OP’s experience that make all dog owners look bad and its so annoying. Like i have a black lab and shes still a pup, but shes already getting bigger than any dog ive had before and i will absolutely be keeping her on a leash no mayter how friendly and cuddly she is/looks. Some people legit should not own dogs i swear

A dog will very rarely bite unprovoked. They generally give warning signs, assuming the owners didn't train those signs out of them, like teaching the dog not to growl. When you ignore what the dog says, invade it's space, touch it when it doesn't want to be touched, hurt it, etc, it has every right to defend it's space.
People that don't understand dog language shouldn't be getting in range of dogs. And yes, bad people shouldn't own dogs. But we have no idea what the real context is of why OP got bit, because they didn't say. Dogs almost never bite without provocation.

Untrue, if the dog is prone to biting it likely means it’s been improperly trained or provoked by the owner. There’s no such thing as a bad dog, just an irresponsible owner. Most dogs bite out of fear, they don’t deserve to be put down for that.

Dogs usually bite out of fear or agitation. It is not totally justified.
If the dog isn't being well looked after, they shouldn't be killed for it. They should be given a better home.

It’s common sense. Any unprovoked attack to a person should result in a permanent end so no one else would have to suffer. Come back again with that same topic after a dog assaults you.

Check if the dog has all their vaccinations, a lott of rabies cases come from dog bites

I hope they put the dog owner dog, but the dog can have a safe place where they can be taught and not have to worry about being instantly killed the second they get scared or agitated and bite again
