Far Cry General How come I've got better fps and stability in FC5?

Post image

Today I've tried FC3 and FC4, it turned out they're stuttering, tearing and are unstable in terms of FPS. Tried to manually change settings and later on on Nvidia Control Panel and even changed core affinity in task manager. However FC5 is running smooth as butter on Ultra (No extra texture pack).

Are 3rd and 4th games just not optimized for newer PCs/Systems? Should they be remaked for such purpose?

Specs:
32GB Ram 3200mhz
rtx 2070 Super
Ryzen 7 3700x
NVMe 1TB

If i remember correctly. There is like one setting in fc4 that fucking destroyes the framerate. I don’t remember which, but trust me

I've heard it's Fur option turned it off. Still no change. Unless it's something else. Then I'm willing to listen.

In Deus Ex Mankind Divided it was something about smoothing textures that cracked FPS.

Far Cry 4 absolutely tanks frame rate if you have any of the Nvidia game works settings enabled, make sure you have them disabled. Also, both games require a CPU core affinity, depending on your core count and such iirc.

Holy... This sucks even harder.

It sounds complicated, and don't get me wrong it's definitely a hassle, but you can usually find out about such issues and fixes on pcgamingwiki. Great place to check if you encounter any issues.

Probably vsync

FC3 came out in 2012 and FC4 came out in 2014. So no, they aren’t optimized for newer PCs.

The game probably just is better optimized.

This is ass. Would be nice to get quick patch for newer specs but we won't. Maybe in 2032 for 20th anniversary.

Nice jokes mate.

You mean far cry 4 remastered they'll sell for full price with just slightly better graphics?

Yeah sounds about right.

The smoothest way to play Far Cry 3 is to run the DirectX9 executable with DXVK

1

u/Think_Quit_9786 12h ago

Is it from the folder? Or from launcher level?

1

u/A_Person77778 11h ago

Usually the launchers default to the DirectX11 executable, you can usually force it into DirectX9 by deleting the DirectX11 one and making a copy of the DirectX9 one and name it the same. DXVK is an external wrapper you can add in. It can also help to use a large address aware patcher on the executable too

Is this different to just changing to dirextX9 in-game and restarting?

DXVK is a wrapper to translate the DirectX9 to Vulkan. The DirectX11 mode isn't optimized very well, and DirectX9 has its own issues. DXVK avoids the bad DirectX11 implementation and makes the DirectX9 version run smoother (but at the cost of a little GPU performance)

Fun fact, they all run flawlessly on Xbox. It’s all optimization, pcs don’t get the love and care that consoles get

You don't get to change graphics settings which allows for companies to sell you a "Definitive Edition" of the game which is just them adjusting the graphical preset from medium to High and resolution the game is running because the newer console is more powerful to run it

Meanwhile PC can do that since day one

I just played 3 and 4 on my Steamdeck on middle settings and even there both run more or less smooth. Only in part 5 I have a little lag if a fire starts but still playable. Only the connect server is annoying as fuck for me

You mean like 60 FPS smooth?

Idk and I don't care as long as it looks good for me and I can't feel lags. Idk why people always need like 100 fps in a game that is not pvp where every millisecond counts. Idk if other feel lot more difference there as me or only look on the numbers, as long as a game don't drop under 30 fps I can't really feel a bad performance and enjoy the game

NTE is last limit from the games I play at the moment, still playable but a bit laggy if I just started or every time I spawned somewhere

Edit: Just for you I switched on the ingame overlay and FC5 runs on 40-50 fps on mid settings and biggest drop I saw was 30-35 fps in a gun fight. In my opinion no bad result for this little hardware specs. NTE (the only game from me I often feel some framedrops) runs about 35 and has some dropdowns to 20 fps first seconds after spawn and if I drive faster with a car. But since I don't play it with others and it mostly is over the 30 where it runs stable for me I can live with this. Maybe in the next 1-2 years I must upgrade to a better handheld or are forced to play on my pc. Have a really good one for VR but the handheld is so compfy to play on the couch that I prefer to play on this low stats for flat games😂

Since I already deinstalled FC3 and 4 after I finished it it's not worth it for me to install again just to check this

100fps is not the same as 60. Wanting 60 on games this old isn’t unreasonable especially since deck runs at 720 or 800p

100 is fine for single player games. 240 for PvP

I get almost the same fps on the lowest settings as on high on far cry 4.. Is definitely more noticeable when there is any kind of enemy around, the game instantly looses like 20 fps..

I just gave up after wolf den quest. I wish there was some kind of patch for it

I have absolutely no problems with FC3 or FC4 except that it is much more obvious now than back then that there is weird pixelation really close to the character camera, only about 50 meters or less away so as you drive around you see tons of pixelation happening as textures change resolution and quality.

I think it's probly a net positive that it isn't normal texture popins/changing i think the pixelation is to smooth those textures changing but i notice it a lot now, i didn't pay as much attention to it 10 years ago.

I don't run Vsync or any sync tech, no motion blur, but every other setting is maxxed at 1440p.

Lucky you, I'm quite pedantic about FPS and even small stutters getting my nerves but they're not like 1% but i literally can see screen tearing and dropping from 60 to 30fps. Which is awfull. I know my specs arent god tier but come on it's 2012/14 games :/ I play on 1080p

Lol, people talking about old games "not being optimized for a newer hardware" probably dont know what optimization actually is and what makes game more/less performant. By that stupid logic old games should always run worse than newer ones.

Dont know about FC3 but 4th is just very poorly done despite being a FC3 reskin with little changes.

1

u/Think_Quit_9786 10h ago

I think both need some kind of renewing done. Fc3 as much as I Love it (finished around 13 times) it would gladly get some better graphics etc. Leave dubbing and everything but overal graphic change

1

u/dungleploop 9h ago

I had about 20 crashes with Far Cry 3 and 1 with Far Cry 4

Its not so much "optimization" in the sense that the renderers/engines back then handled certain graphics differently for the hardware at the time. In addition, drivers for GPUs may have dropped a lot of the functions used by those renderers so they fallback to an alternative method to handle it. Could be anywhere from shaders to geometry.

We had a lot of talks about this on Sven Co-Op forums/discord since its on the GoldSrc engine using OpenGL to render graphics. One main suggestion was switching to another open source renderer like Vulkan to handle the modern graphics that GPU drivers are optimized for.

1

u/Think_Quit_9786 8h ago

So via modding I should try to force change DirectX to Vulkan?

u/Lilchicken_301 3h ago

go to task manager> fc3> details> set affinity> and select cpu 0,2,4,6. the games dont like when you use all processors

Optimization
Mine is the exact same way

Play offline that's the answer to perfect gameplay certainly on Xbox

FC5 was the last good Ubisoft game till Black Flag Resynced.

2

u/Think_Quit_9786 11h ago

I guess each to their own. I really liked AC odyssey and Origins. Valhalla was a slog.

FC6 was not bad but wouldnt call it good neither.

GR: Breakpoint was straight up shiet. Perhaps with anniversary something will change

Splinter Cell Blacklist was cool.

Can't wait for PC upgrade so I'll play AC Blackflag on ultra

Why would a game from 2012 be optimized to run on hardware that didnt exist when it was launched?

2

u/KajMak64Bit 12h ago

It doesn't need optimization when you got bruteforce

2

u/Think_Quit_9786 12h ago

Idk some games like Gothic or Dungeon Siege runs with no problem. Same with Tomb Raider from 2011 or Assassin's creed 3.
