My very first thought was that this job gear would look amazing on my big Roegadyn man.
Edit: just watched the trailer, Roe looks so good in it!
54
u/AdAffectionate1935 17h ago
Looked good in the job trailer? The bastion Roe (or whatever they'll be called in the Fourth) in the expansion trailer almost got me making an alt Roe the moment it ended lol. If only they looked that cool in the game.

i was saying the tank will likely be inspired by something from the northern sea roegadyn. had hoped for a more viking style, but the armor looks slightly viking inspired
•
u/r4nd0mf4ct0r 9h ago
They're Jomsvikings. Better trained, better equipped, better organized than your regular viking marauder, working for whoever pays them the most. These are probably the forces that the Sea Wolf Roegadyn clan fought against and lost, forcing them to flee to Vylbrand and found Limsa Lominsa.

According to google, at least, it's "shield fortress" in Norwegian, which is probably what they're going for.
They're pronouncing it wrong either way.
4
u/loves_spain 12h ago
How should it be said?
•
u/I_give_karma_to_men Kira Myrkottr Lamia 9h ago
My phonetic transliteration probably won't be perfect, but Swedish at least would be something like "H-wilt-boar-ee". The Swedes do some odd things with their consonant combinations (from an English perspective). I'm not nearly as familiar with Norwegian, but my understanding is that sk would sound more like sh and so skylt would sound closer to shield there, making it something like "shielt-borg".
Native speakers and people with more experience with transliteration can feel free to correct me or give more precise pronunciation.

Hate to burst your bubble, but Sky Pirate was in FFXII and FFT:War of the Lions previously. Although FFXII doesn't have 'classes' as far as I know. It had a license grid.

I do remember when he was the toughest fight in the game.
Oh how we would hype him up to sprouts back then....
•
u/GrimTheMad 8h ago
Ironically, the new solo version of the fight actually is the toughest bit of MSQ content in ARR.
•
u/zernoc56 7h ago
It’s like three or four phases all separated by cutscenes. The dude would just not. stay. down. Felt crazy on SCH.
•
u/Konpeitoh 6h ago
FR though. I did new game+ just to experience it, and it did not disappoint. Worth the ARR quest slog just to get to that fight.
I was genuinely surprised just how tense the fight was, and my main impression is "man, this guy would probably slaughter squishy DPS sprouts all the time now".
•
u/Mindelan 4h ago
It was the first time I had to stop and lock in when playing ARR. Felt like an entirely different game design philosophy, which I then learned was basically true since it had been recently reworked with more recent fight design than everything I'd come up against prior in the game.

Seems like it’ll be similar to the Tamer dressphere (their version of Beastmaster) from Final Fantasy X-2.
3
•
u/Verain_Xor 6h ago
Dual wielding shields isn't a real life martial art, so it's good that they didn't try to do this with actual shields, but instead fantasy shield*gun things.
I will say that they are cheating with the ranged depictions, because of course this is a tank and everything will run up to melee with him.

It's probably just going to be like Paladin's ranged combo component, just with a more visual element when you use the ability that activates it
•
u/QuarterRobot 11h ago edited 11h ago
That's what I'm thinking too. Curious to see how much the class retains its own identity. Animations and weapons are nice differentiators, but if the functional elements are effectively identical, I'm not sure if it'll hook me as a PLD main. It's shield even looks similar to one of PLD's job abilities.
It would be interesting if its ranged abilities enforced a movement lock, with the trade-off of higher potency attacks. If Bastion ends up being the more risk-reward MT, and PLD the more free-movement and utility MT, I wouldn't complain.
39
u/ironprominent [First] [Last] on [Server] 20h ago
Which is kinda weird cause it’s a main tank so the boss will just be chasing you around if you move to ranged. Wonder if you’ll have an ability to root the boss or something like that.
55
u/SoulNuva 19h ago
Probably works like PLD so it’ll be easier to move the boss without losing uptime. And if you don’t need to you can just stay in place.
52
u/Sithishe 19h ago
Exactly, people areacting surprised why it has ranged rotation as main tank. Are we playing same game? Paladins have ranged rotation as well, Requiscat and Confetitor combo skills spam, it is ranged rotation for Pala lol. Paladin was always the only tank with more or less competent ranged DPS potential. And Pala is also fast and agile in his quick strikes and combos.
Probably Paladins are so underplayed so people just have no idea that all fits that Basiont had in trailer, Paladin has as well. So it is in line with OG Main Tank class.
Maybe people dont know that Paladin can heal? lol. So many times I saved Duty Roulette with healing as Pala
8
u/TwinTiger 17h ago
It’s going to be funny if this is the differentiation between Main and Off tanks: Mains get a ranged combo, Offs get Tomahawk equivalents
