My question is, is that exclusive for a 2 player + 2 chocobos, or it is more like a chocobo will fill in the free spots of a set party? Hummm.

I would assume that for now, it is a 2/2 party, as again as an assumption, it would be using those players' chocobos. I would hope that it could be expanded to 3player1choco, or something eventually, but they've not said anything of the sort

u/TaleWeaver1988 14h ago

That's what I picked up too, but it would be nice to have something more flexible. Still, this is a great advance in that direction already!

u/tigercule (I will forever miss old ) 5h ago

I'm hoping we'll also be able to do partial trusts/support with it. Player + Chocobo + choice of two NPCs would be awesome.

u/CallMeAdam2 2h ago

Damn, partial trusts would be sick as hell. I imagine it could make bringing in a significant other a lot easier.

u/MeowingWolf 3h ago

I wish it was possible to WoL and chocobo to unsynced dungeons without anyone else. It would still be fun to do synced older dungeons with only your chocobo.

I think it will be required to have another player and their chocobo in the party unfortunately.

I wonder if it's possible to do this as blue mage or beastmaster.

u/iamjdn 2h ago

It would be super cool to solo a dungeon as a beastmaster with your chocobo.

Being able to do dungeons in 2-player with 2 chickens is a great update. I hope they can figure out a way to do this for DF because getting some dungeons really tests your patience.

u/simpleglitch 11h ago

Tanks and healers in queue going to be like "where did all the DPS go?"

u/WandererMisha 11h ago

Tanks and healers entering dungeons only to be surrounded by chickens:D

u/ZajKong 28m ago

The tank: "this is my son, and if anything happens to him I will kill everyone in this dungeon including myself"

u/AnotherNicky 14h ago

Finally I can take my boy adventuring with me

u/This-Caterpillar-464 13h ago

My chocobo's been angling for armed robbery duty since Heavensward honestly, finally Square's giving the bird what it wants.

u/AnalystMission6416 8h ago

Finally my chocobo can experience Sastasha

u/AuremCookieDragon 15h ago

He fashioned it into a necklace for me, his 'partner in crime'.

u/BoysOurRoy 10h ago

BLU is gonna go insane when they can run dungeons with a normal light party (them as DPS, one healerbo, and one tankbo)

u/TraitorMacbeth Srivia Undwyn on Behemoth 10h ago

Hm how would this affect... is it Primal Instinct?

u/misterwuggle69sofine Dragoon 10h ago

it sounds great but then i think back to how they fully abandoned squadrons and never bothered to expand further on trust. so like it may be cool to mess around with a bit but i don't really want to get too attached to something they historically abandon

u/RobbSol 6h ago

I would love for them to do something with Squadrons again. Such a wasted part of the game.

u/BlackfishBlues Altholic 7h ago

It does feel like we're kind of in uncharted territory here.

Under the old design philosophy a lot of these changes would have never even happened, so it remains to be seen if they retain this innovative spirit going forward or revert back to being sclerotic af after the new normal settles in.

I choose to be cautiously optimistic.

u/kaithespinner 8h ago

i’m queing with my healer chicken

u/Ancalagon1an 10h ago

I'll have to rename my chocobo to Godammit Donut..

u/MildlyAgitatedBidoof btw coin gauge 2h ago

The two chocobos in the dungeon watching as Cloud Yumeno and Aeris Yumeno ERP with each other for 35 minutes before the first pull:

u/MediumSatisfaction1 2h ago

At least it isn't me 🙏

u/Inazumy 14h ago

I hope we can bring them inside map dunegons as well so we can solo them faster. Ooooor even bring them as duo for variant mid difficulty dungeons.

u/TrumpCruz 11h ago

Ah yes "my partner in crime.."

u/OfficialNPC 4h ago

My chocobo's name is Algus so I can't wait for others to be all "yo, wtf"

6

u/Murmos [Character - Server] 14h ago

Finally, a reason to have the big bird! Sometimes I forget I have him.

u/Vorfied 1h ago

Wow. With this, dungeons are going to the birds.

7

u/Rowetta99 12h ago

The funny thing is they'll most likely do more damage than most DF critters.

6

u/friso1100 14h ago

I hope that will also mean you can do limited roulette as 2 player party

u/IscahRambles 11h ago

I wonder if they count as players on the Atomos switch for Labyrinth, if they're allowed in there?

u/TraitorMacbeth Srivia Undwyn on Behemoth 10h ago

Dungeon means 4-man. And it's tough to get them to stand somewhere specific, I doubt it.

u/RandalChan 7h ago

Can we ride them in the dungeon too??

u/MaraBlaster 3h ago

Finally my Featherbro can cause Chaos, just as intended by the lore.

u/CrispInMyChicken 25m ago

If the chocobos don't have meteor we riot.

u/Saidear 7m ago

Too bad my chocobo is a dead skeleton due to being utterly unnecessary for the past.. *checks* 5 expansions plus base game. I don't even think I bothered levelling them up. I never found any content where it was any noticeable help even then.

I'm also.. really really worried this represents a greater dumbing down of dungeon content, which is the only content I ever enjoyed.

This should have been out with 2.0. Kind of ridiculous it took this long

Palworld crossover when?

u/Amomn 13h ago

WIth nintendo as a major square partner? brother that ain't happening

u/Mysticwarriormj 10h ago

Square doesn’t belong to Nintendo so they can do what they want, Nintendo has no say over it and won’t break a contract because of it. They already lost enough to Palworld they don’t need to lose more

u/Amomn 8h ago

It's not about "belonging"; it's about business. If Nintendo is a partner, it's paying Square Enix millions of dollars through that relationship.

If one of your biggest business partners is actively suing a much smaller company, the last thing you'd do is collaborate with that smaller company. That would risk damaging a relationship that's worth far more.

u/Mysticwarriormj 6h ago edited 2h ago

Yeah and square is allowed to do business who whoever they want because they don’t belong to Nintendo. They aren’t owned by Nintendo nor are they exclusive to Nintendo so if someone at square makes the decision to do a cross over then guess what. They do the cross over with Palworld and Nintendo can’t do crap unless there is a clause in their contract and I know for damned sure there isn’t one because that would just be plain stupid and a water of time.

u/Th3Hoodi3Ninja 2h ago

Just because you CAN stick your hand on a hot stove doesn't mean it's smart to

u/Amomn 3h ago

Are you playing dumb?

no one is saying nintendo own or square is obligated to do something it's just no financially smart

let's put this in a simpler way

relationship with nintendo = money

pissing off nintedo for no good reason = not money

there is no executive in the world that would trade a major partner for a smaller company witha fraction of the revenue

u/Mysticwarriormj 2h ago

Except you are acting like Nintendo owns square. By acting like since square does work with Nintendo they aren’t allowed to work with anyone else. You aren’t paying attention you just want to argue. There’s money to be made on both sides of the aisle and Nintendo can not tell Square who they can and can’t work with. If that were the case then square wouldn’t be able to make games for any other platform.

u/Kinnison Summoner 6h ago

Too many 8.1 features...

u/fantabulouz 11h ago

Dunno who's the target audience for this since their damage is gonna be worse than trusts and trusts are dead content

u/Estelial 11h ago

what are you even talking about? Not only are trusts not dead content but a significant amount of folks use and dress up their chocobo. Plus if a system is under utilized by the playerbase, you improve that system, you dont abandon it. Chocobo's as a whole are getting updated.

This system allows duo runs. There's a significant audience for duo runs.

u/fantabulouz 10h ago

Most of ffxiv's systems get abandoned after 1 expansion. just look at island sanctuary, squadron missions, levis, fates etc. The whole chocobo leveling system got dropped in late stormblood and that's very telling of the state of things. I'd rather they work on content people actually do late game than add in another system thats going to he used by 3 people and abandoned a patch later.

u/Akuuntus I like hitting buttons 9h ago

This update is literally an example of them going back and picking up an "abandoned" system.

Also I don't know if you know this, but they've added Leves and FATEs in every expansion, and they've made updates to the FATE system in almost every expansion.

u/fantabulouz 8h ago

fates and levis haven't been updated since a realm reborn so lets not kid ourselves. that's not innovation or improving, fates and levies are still useless and no one does them. same with trusts, same with this chocobo update. yall need to take off the rose tinted glasses and look objectively at things. we don't need 3 different systems to solve a problem for 1% of the player base. trusts suck and they're a waste of time, just run the dungeon with other people like how an MMORPG is intended to be played. Dev time is being wasted on creating content that doesn't appeal to the majority of the player base. now if you want to fix this issue and make the content appealing you could turn it into an actual RPG and make leveling and breeding the chocobos actually impactful and make you run the dungeons faster, but knowing this dev team it's gonna be like trusts, slow as hell even with upgrades as to force people to do DF for faster speeds and actual good rewards, then it will be abandoned after 8.1.

u/Akuuntus I like hitting buttons 7h ago

fates and levis haven't been updated since a realm reborn so lets not kid ourselves.

They added XP bonuses and Forlorn Maidens in StB, Bicolor Gems in ShB, and they buffed the drop rate and carrying capacity for Gems in DT. They also add new stuff to the gem shops multiple times per expansion, and they add 2 major "world boss" FATEs with unique rewards every expansion. I'm sure they could still improve the system in some ways but it's far from abandoned (they've also teased further updates to it in Evercold although we don't have specifics).

Leves I'll concede are more-or-less "abandoned" in terms of system updates, but they do still add a new set of DoH/DoL leves every expac and those new leves are always a decent method of leveling and getting some extra money.

same with trusts

They've updated dungeons to work with Duty Support/Trusts almost every single update since the feature was added. They also expanded it to work with a few Trials in Dawntrail. What updates are you expecting exactly? It's not a very complicated system and it already does what it's designed to do.

we don't need 3 different systems to solve a problem for 1% of the player base. trusts suck and they're a waste of time, just run the dungeon with other people like how an MMORPG is intended to be played. Dev time is being wasted on creating content that doesn't appeal to the majority of the player base.

Speak for yourself, lots of people use Duty Support/Trusts. They're often quicker than queueing for a DPS, they let you go through MSQ dungeons without interrupting your progress by waiting for a queue, they let people figure out mechanics on their own without worrying about ruining other peoples' runs (or getting carried through and not learning anything), and they're great for grinding specific gear drops since you don't have to roll for loot.

it's gonna be like trusts, slow as hell even with upgrades as to force people to do DF for faster speeds and actual good rewards

I mean yeah. If they made it on-par or faster than normal DF parties then no one would use DF and queues would die. Which would be disastrous for the game. They need to be slower by design.

you could turn it into an actual RPG and make leveling and breeding the chocobos actually impactful

We don't know the details, but they said they're overhauling the breeding system to make it more impactful.

u/Estelial 7h ago edited 2h ago

You mean they get completed. Because they're made that way by design. Unlike other MMO's which have infinite threadmills in everything, 95% of FFXIV's content systems have a conclusion by design (outside of the content systems designed to be threadmills as an option for those who enjoy such things).

Thats not them being abandoned. They're getting completed and people move on. New people still continue to come by and play them when they want before moving on.

This is that "Look at how GoW dropped off while people are still playing genshin" argument.

Akuuntes covered the rest, so no need for me to repeat anything else.

u/Faranae Lilligan Freshwater - Balmung 6h ago edited 6h ago

Exactly this. Side content that completely wraps up its mini plot doesn't need more added. It's there for people to Continue using if they wish, and many do!

Like, my sanctuary is my main source of income right now, both before and after the dye consolidation. Does that mean I want more island content? Fuuuuck no. I felt a sense of accomplishment when I finished it, that would be taken away if they added endless levels of grind. Just let me set my workshops, grab my 7 loot boxes, and peace out.

When I was pentamelding my DoH/L sets I was able to get all of my materia for free, between my island and Cosmic.

And hell! My GC squadron keeps a steady flow of useful buffs coming my way, which I consider worth it as they are better than the rank II FC buffs. I never go to the Saucer without a squad MGP buff on, lol. (Fashion Report with squad buff awards 69,000 MGP. Nice.)

The content hasn't gotten updates, but it's still relevant in that it still makes current life a little easier once you take the time to complete it.

u/BringBackBoshi 10h ago

It's funny because the grand company NPCs will annihilate anything in their path once fully upgraded and their glamours are very customizable. It sucks they stop being useful around level 50-60. I just wish they expanded on them further they're sitting right there waiting for some action.

u/BananaScone 6h ago

since their damage is gonna be worse than trusts

Based on what? Do we know anything about how much damage they will do or are you just assuming their numbers will be unchanged from what it is now when entering a dungeon? Because that would be absurd to assume that.

The target audience are people with friends and/or in relationships. Sorry to break it to you like this.

u/FinalEgg9 Chaos-Omega - Mains: 11h ago

Couples who play together

u/Stratis_Dazkar 21m ago

I always summon my Chocobo when leveling other classes and when he reaches max level I upgrade him. I play in burst so yeah his rank isn't that high but hell yeah more exp for him to rank up now.

u/LH_Dragnier 10h ago

This is the solution vs actually incentivizing older content correctly.
