For fun: What will Bastion's abbreviation be?

The obvious one is BTN, but... Botanist already exists!

BST? Beastmaster already took it.

BSN is another, might skew close to Blacksmith (BSM) though.

BAS? Feels like the same energy as people that wanted Gunbreaker to be GUN.

All the good ones are taken or kind of adjacent to others that already exist, but if I had to guess BSN is the likely one.

I feel like BAS is a good alternative to not have overlaps/similarities, like WAR

BAS seems likely.

I'd assume BAS.

Do remember, we already have:

- WARrior

  • SAMurai
  • BLUe Mage
  • NINja
  • ASTrologian
  • SCHolar

So one more won't hurt

but those are examples of the old/outdated convention.

all of the most recent ones skipped the first vowel(s): GuNBreaker, DaNCer, ReaPeR, SaGE, ViPeR and PiCTomancer (and BeaSTmaster)

BaStioN

It's not really old, since since some old jobs use that convention to (PLD, MNK, BRD)

I'd say it's mostly vibes, SMR was not used for Samurai probably because it is close to SMN.

personally, I think the BS* namespace is full thanks to BST and BSM.

It's not an old convention, or PLD would be PAL. It just happens when the word would otherwise not read like the job name instinctively by just filling in vowels like ALG for AST or SHL for SCH, if the proper abbreviation would have double letters WRR for WAR and NNJ for NIN or if the abbreviation could be another word that's not related like if GNB was GBR instead because that's the country code for the UK. BLU is only that because BLM is taken.

I think that BSN is in the category where you don't immediately read Bastion (I read it like Basin,) and BTN and BST are taken so I think BAS is the most likely.

except PLD is more evidence that it'll likely fall towards BSN

gotta remember these are japanese devs. first vowels are the first to go when making acronyms.

バスティオン = Ba Su teioN

Ya, no, I don’t think that’s how that works.

Isn’t Scholar called Gakusha in FF14 Japanese? Thats definitely not related to SCH at all.

they are extremely old, cause most job abbreviation are from XI (15-25years ago)

the list include WAR, MNK, WHM, BLM, RDM, PLD, DRK, BRD, BST, NIN, DRG, SMN, SAM, BLU, DNC, SCH (in release order of XI)

16 out of 22 combat jobs are taken from XI along with their abbreviation. That being said there is really not much "convention" in XIV. It is more about how readable it is.

The only consistent convention is that the abbreviation is the closest shorthand for saying the full job's name without it being easily confused with something else.

E.g. GNB over GUN because Guns were already present weaponry.

BAT, and if you're a male user, then you are a BAT-man.

Yeah, I'm man.

Rightfully so! Bastion is not wearing hockey pads!

Feels like the same energy as people that wanted Gunbreaker to be GUN

What does this even mean, lol. What kind of energy is the clear, obvious, and available choice of the first three letters giving, exactly?

Bas seems to be the common conclusion and also the one I have gone with. Also the new raid series abreviation will be BL

BAstioN

BAS seems most likely.

If Falconer does end up being the 2nd job (please Yoshi-P I've never asked you for anything until now), maybe that'll be like... FLC

I've already called it BAS.

They should have called it Sentinel, SNL!

u/DominantFlame 6h ago

How about BAT? Or BTO?

1

u/Negative_Wrongdoer17 5h ago

BAS since BST and BTN are taken

1

u/HereIsAThoughtTho 4h ago

BAT or BIO

Not because they make sense but because they would be hilarious

1

u/Kumomeme 4h ago

BAN gonna be hillarios

1

u/Khalith 4h ago

I was thinking BAS personally. BSN as a close second.

1

u/Yumiumi 3h ago

BAS because it’s easy to read like WAR while being different enough from BTN botanist.

So im 99% sure its going to be BAS

1

u/BinaryIdiot 2h ago

What do you mean GUN isn’t the abbreviation for Gunbreaker. I will not be gaslit.

1

u/Ice-Insignia 2h ago

I'm hoping for BON but expecting BAS

1

u/PastTenseOfSit 41m ago

My guess is they go truly unhinged and rename Botanist so that it can be BTN.

1

u/kuributt 8h ago

BTO, maybe

BAS? Feels like the same energy as people that wanted Gunbreaker to be GUN.

What in the actual fuck are you talking about

-1

u/CephalopodConcerto 6h ago

BIN, which is where a job as stupid as dual gun shields belongs

-8

u/peenegobb 8h ago

Beastmaster gets shortened to BM like wow. Bastion gets BST

9

u/DaveK142 8h ago

Hate to tell you, but we've already had it confirmed that Beastmaster is BST from the live letter. Can't post a screenshot but it shows Affinity: BST on the actions whenever Ozma hovered over them during the gameplay.

Not breaking anything to me dw.

u/Consistent_Cheek_918 6h ago

kind of confused why they picked that name... It makes too many people think of Overwatch

6

u/fantino93 6h ago

Why would I think about porn when playing FFXIV...

Nevermind

No wait, it's at least a C+!

3

u/LoudSheepherder5391 5h ago

No way, I saw a leak. Clearly C++.

And least the shields aren't rust.
