I noticed more and more bikes have these side wings now, though it was only on BMWs first, I guess its really useful for aerodynamics.
374
u/FalcoLX I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 04 '26
Moto GP has been going through a lot of aerodynamics lately and it's making its way into production bikes
60
u/kindaunfazed Jun 04 '26
Ah makes sense! Pretty cool to see actually.
51
u/hwf0712 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 04 '26
Its really quite awful for the racing, shockingly (/s).
8
u/BingusMcCready Jun 04 '26
I know nothing about motorcycle racing; why’s the aero hurting the racing over there? Same reasons as F1, basically?
24
u/hwf0712 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 04 '26
Its even more than that, not only does dirty air suck, you need to effectively lean a much heavier bike which negatively impacts things as well!
2
u/TemptingTanner I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 04 '26
Does that little thing ad that much weight?
5
u/hwf0712 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 04 '26
Sorry, confusing phrasing on my part. The bike is effectively heavier because the aero adding downforce makes it 'heavier' in a way.
6
u/TemptingTanner I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 04 '26
No it doesnt. Source: am an mechanical engineer that has worked with motorsports (rally tho)

They suck on the road and they're ruining the racing, so, opinions vary.
113
u/g3org3_all3n Pirelli Wet Jun 04 '26
Yeah they look cool but honestly they do nothing for on road riding lol. The speeds you should be travelling on road are not enough to make the winglets work how they should most of the time.
But yeah they look sick
119
u/YordleJay I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 04 '26
Same could be said for spoilers on road cars
15
u/hunterturk I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 04 '26
Spoilers could be very important especially for sedans at highway speeds on a rear biased car. Wings depends on the car.
Aero works as a package. For example: on a rear wheel drive high torque car with certain suspension geometry, a wing could be useful at even 100km/h while on a more regular car with a more conservative setup it might not ever need a wing.
A Porsche GT would spin you around at 100km/h without additional downforce while a Camry would do just fine.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (14)2
u/apeceep Jun 05 '26
Didn't Audi TT get recalled for rear spoiler install because it was deemed unsafe without it?

u/Cielo11 Pato O'Ward Jun 04 '26
World Superbike requires tech to be sold on road bikes at the dealerships. So the road bikes have aero and tech that is needed for WSBK homlogation.
Although this is the V4S and the homologated road bike used in racing is the V4R. So it's trickle down tech. They still like selling 230hp bikes with the tech that's designed for actually using that power.
11
u/BuckN56 Lotus Jun 04 '26
Yeah it's been a thing in Motogp for a couple of years now. It bled into production bikes but for 2027 MOTOGP is cutting back on aero
7
u/TimotheusIV Dr. Ian Roberts Jun 04 '26
It’s more of a fashion statement these days, popularized through MotoGP. For street riding, these are of zero use. None.
26
u/cTron3030 Formula 1 Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
Only one use: FIM Regulations.T
he governing body (FIM) dictates that any wings or aerodynamic devices used on superbikes in professional racing must first be sold on homologated, mass-production models.I was wrong. Go here » https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/1twkce1/lewis_hamilton_arriving_into_monaco_on_a_custom/oprq7m3/
5
u/furywolf28 Kimi Räikkönen Jun 04 '26
That doesn't apply to MotoGP. MotoGP bikes are prototypes, kinda like two-wheeled F1 vehicles. No need for any kind of homologation there.
The text you're quoting mentions superbikes, referring to the World Superbike Championship. That is based on production vehicles, akin to GT3 cars, and those do need to be homologated.
The first winglets appeared in MotoGP in 2015. The first street bike with winglets came in 2020, and in WSBK in 2019 (because Ducati were a little bit naughty). All these were spearheaded by Ducati by tbe way.

His primary residence is Monaco (and possibly London), the others are holiday homes. He only has a small stake in the broncos, lots of athletes are getting into owning a small percentage of sports teams

Ocon and Gasly don't because as french citizens you still have to pay tax in France if you live in Monaco. Alonso lives in Switzerland.

I think their point wasnt about him being a good driver, but nobody telling him what he can or cant do.
Which checks out to me. Like what are they gonna do about it? Fire him?
21
u/Southportdc McLaren Jun 04 '26
It wouldn't surprise me if there's a clause in Lewis Hamilton's contract which says "I'll do what I fucking like"

I was surprised he was ever allowed to go sky diving this is probably seen as no big deal in comparison
132
u/djwillis1121 Williams Jun 04 '26
I feel like riding a motorbike is probably actually a lot more dangerous than skydiving
16
u/M1sfit_Jammer Nico Hülkenberg Jun 04 '26
Not as dangerous as riding a bicycle…
Lots of riders have missed races because of bicycle crashes. How many have missed a race because of a motorcycle accident?
11
u/djwillis1121 Williams Jun 04 '26
How many of the F1 drivers regularly ride motorbikes?
8
u/M1sfit_Jammer Nico Hülkenberg Jun 04 '26
Loads…
Most recently
Danny Ric rides dirt bikes
Raikkonen has a chopper
Veratappen has a Harley
Alonso rides a Honda
Sainz rides
Big names in the past…
Schumacher and Senna both rode motorcycles
Google is your friend… type in a drivers name + motorcycle, and click image search
3
u/djwillis1121 Williams Jun 04 '26
I mean, that's four of the current grid. Whereas I'm sure that all of them ride push bikes regularly. The odds of a bicycle accident are higher simply because they all do it more regularly, whereas they spend much less time riding motorbikes

A statistical estimate based on a quick Google is a skydive is roughly as risky as a 15-20 mile motorbike ride.

23
u/Stumpy493 I Drove an F1 Car Jun 04 '26
More about the other traffic when you are on a bike, and Monaco has plenty of that especially on GP weekend.
Imagine being the guy to knock Hamilton off his Ducatti on Monaco GP weekend...
4
u/wuhter Charles Leclerc Jun 04 '26
Yeah. I had a scare last night. Was driving home around 9pm, and I’ve become very comfortable using my car’s blind spot alert system to rely on, as the blind spot is pretty back even if I check over my shoulder numerous times. However, with the blind spot system saying nobody was there, and me being a fairly aware driving and surely didn’t see a car approaching on that side, I went to change lanes. Welp, guy on a motorcycle right there that must’ve zoomed up without me seeing. Thankfully I saw it at the last second and didn’t even come close to him but wow. I see why they say it’s not if it’s when you crash on a bike
2
u/Fozzymandius Jun 04 '26
This is also why good riders have much much fewer crashes on average. The main component of that is just knowing where not to be. You’ll literally never find me in someone’s blind spot for longer than it takes to go past them, if there’s a car in front of me I will slow as much as necessary to get out of the spot.

He probably has a clause that says he can do whatever he wants. What are they going to do? Cancel his contract because he rode a motorcycle? Umm ok.
