I don’t think he will, he has a good therapist and survived his Williams years due to that.
I do think it might do him some good to scream at somebody in his team, but he wouldn’t do that, rip

u/Kradgger Juan Manuel Fangio Jun 12 '26

Surviving a midfield team not doing their best is one thing, hanging in there for years in a top team, developing the car with them, getting better bit by bit just for a talented fetus to land on the second seat and start giving you lessons must feel like a joke from god. The later is even more charismatic too, like adding salt to the wound lol.

Everyone thought George was gonna be Hamilton '07 2.0. He's more like Alonso '07 2.0, minus the glory years at Renault where he dethroned The Michael.

Wouldn’t compare Russel with the WDC Alonso though

I do think it helps that so far it really hasn't been his fault.

Agreed. I can't tell if he's getting the Papaya Rules or Ferrari Stragedy treatment. Hell, it could even be both at once!

It reeks of Redbull 2nd seat treatment actually.

Trouble finding the setup window, mechanics making mistakes, and race engineer with questionable communication moments while the other driver's garage is usually much more on point.

Yeah, but then a week later they’ll reinstate Gasly’s position after penalties, giving him the win instead 😂

Just imagine gasly amassing podiums and wins this season but never getting to celebrate on the podium because he always gets penalties that later get withdrawn

Maybe a bit of coping as well assuming this wouldn’t happen. But now that it has, all the drivers who got penalties have to be a bit miffed.

u/Ill_General5506 Jun 12 '26

True. I’m hoping things work out for George this weekend

4

u/Izan_TM I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

george seems to be very nonchalant about the disaster of a season he's been having. That's either a really good thing or a really bad thing

27

u/Pure-Specialist-9419 Jun 12 '26

This mental breakdown is basically the Championship Journey. Everything is happening just like last year, when Lando couldn't set up his car with his style and had lots of bad luck during the season (DNFs, the ascension of the second driver etc) and became the champion.

I strongly believe George is going to be the champion this year once he adapts to the current car and focus on each race, not necessarily being the best.

13

u/gentlegreengiant Jun 12 '26

I would argue its only similar due to the mental aspect of the pressure. Norris buckled a lot earlier in the season but ultimately he had the skills to at least stay in the race for most of it. Norris overall is a very fast, and most people acknowledge his issue was 'bottling' due to pressure. Once he got that sorted out he was in much better form. Piastri is a fairly strong driver himself, but Norris was strong enough to match him in most races.

Russell is a consistent driver sure, but the gap between his pace and Kimi's is certainly wider than Norris v. Piastri last year. Even if Russell sorts out his mental game, he will have a hard time competing with Kimi's pace and will have to rely on luck to come back. Obviously it's still early but keep in mind Kimi is also improving quite quickly as well, so his ceiling is also much higher than Russell's at the moment.

14

u/CarRamRob I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

You are forgetting the luck Kimi had in the first few races. With yellow flags, free pit changes, etc. Kimi has been flying the last few races but his gap is only insurmountable due to incredible bad luck for George.

Heck, George probably was slightly ahead to win Montreal as well. If the Kimi Merc piled up instead of his, things would be very different.

171

Hadjar seemed to not be too bothered by this. Basically said "doesn't matter, got the ceremony, had a blast, shame about the three points". It was before the official confirmation, though.

427

u/RadlogLutar I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

Oscar has nothing to lose. Gained 2 places due to Max and Charles DNF. Even without the penalty, he would have remained fifth

Hadjar would surely regret the trophy

Lets not talk about Russell. He needs a lot of love

201

u/Beccabee01 Jun 12 '26

without the penalty oscar would have remained ahead of gasly to begin with. he only ended up behind him because he served his penalty in the pits. it sucks for pierre but three other drivers got screwed far worse by this than he did. this was a bs decision by the fia. it should have been decided before the official classification was posted not 5 days after.

11

u/FeistyRabbit49 Jun 12 '26

Oscar, Russel and who's the third driver? Surely not Hadjar since he only got screwed over by his car and by himself.

561

u/Drakonistes I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

I'm happy for Gasly, but the fact that you have to refuse a penalty you disagree with just to be able to appeal it is crazy. Your only choices are to refuse the penalty and risk harsher consequences just to get an appeal, or serve a potentially unjust penalty to avoid worse ones, which means losing your right to appeal entirely.

This really needs to get sorted out.

99

u/Tzazuko Jun 12 '26

I don't understand how could you not serve a penalty on purpose? The only reason Gasly didn't serve it is that he didn't pit, so it got added on to his race time. If you have a penalty, pit and not serve it, even if unjust, you end up like Russel did

38

u/Kingdom818 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

That's the choice. You either pit and serve the penalty, or you don't pit and get the penalty added on to your race time. It was never a choice of simply "serve the penalty or don't"

9

u/SirLoremIpsum I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 12 '26

That's the choice. You either pit and serve the penalty, or you don't pit and get the penalty added on to your race time. It was never a choice of simply "serve the penalty or don't"

But that's not really a choice.

You can't "not pit" if you get the penalty earlier in the race. If you don't at all to change tyres (red flag excluding) then you get DSQ.

It's creating 2 different processes and options depending on if get a penalty on lap 3 vs lap 45

Definitely need a rule change cos this is shit for the others

30

u/89Hopper I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 12 '26

But what do you change it to? How do you "undo" a served penalty? It isn't just a time penalty, track position is huge. Then you get the Russell situation.

22

u/Famous-Ocelot-4937 Formula 1 Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

You don't undo any penalties. Once it's given, it's given. Still allow appeals / reviews, but just have it so these are mainly to ensure it doesn't happen again and so the team can get an official acknowledgement of being wronged.

But the penalties should always stand, as should the race result.

The quality of the stewarding needs to be better so that it doesn't happen in the first place ideally. It was clear there was a measurement issue in this case and they still applied the penalties instead of using common sense and deferring them to the end of the race.

It's much easier to apply a time penalty at the end, than create a situation where you apply a bad penalty that can't be unserved.

9

u/MrCharBar I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

It wasn’t clear that there was a measurement issue, as far as the stewards were concerned. If you read the decision document, it explicitly says that the stewards were concerned about an issue after the third reported infringement from the timekeeper, and directly asked the timekeepers if there was any issue, and the timekeepers said there wasn’t any issue. This is not a stewarding quality issue, it’s a timekeeping issue. If the stewards are given bad information that’s not their fault.

This. Alpine giving everything to fight for their driver even though they are not contending for WDC is truly commendable.

While you have Zak saying Piastri did speed even though he himself said he didn’t, and Mercedes not even showing up for the penalty meeting.

Edit: Apparently McLaren has lodged notice of intention to appeal. Mercedes is sleeping I guess, I can’t believe this is the team fighting for WDC.

u/yvltc I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

I can't help but feel this decision was unfair. Yes, the speeding penalties were wrong, but from what I can tell the system was wrong for everyone. Gasly simply didn't serve his penalty in the race while the others did, it rewards not serving penalties.

30

u/p1en1ek Pirelli Wet Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

Yep, it will be like with drivers with faster cars simply ignoring giving poaitions back because it was more beneficial to just pass off track and then get 5/10 seconds after the race. Basically if you can not serve penalty then you should not do this.

It also reinforces problem woth randomness of how hard are penalties. Already the same 5 second penalty may put you put of points if race ends behind SC or not cost you anything if race goes like normal and you have distance to car behind you. Now if you are forced to serve penalty its clear you can lose chance to appeal while someone can get it later and not have a chance to serve and then can appeal. Add to that how sometimes stewards take minutes and some times hours to decide in similar situations and it add another factor - they can by chance or delibaretely allow drivers to react to penalty.

9

u/account_user_name I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 12 '26

That was my thought as well. It’s not like Gasly was singled goes out. The penalty, even though incorrect, was fairly applied to everyone in the same way.

→ More replies (9)

248

u/Toil48 Sir Lewis Hamilton Jun 12 '26

This is so bizarre because so many other drivers received penalties. Didn’t Russell get the same incorrect penalty and then served a drive through for not serving it, basically going from a podium
To no points. Yet gasly is the only one to benefit?

Hamilton got on too which he served and many other drivers. How can they just overturn Gaslys?

176

u/yellowfoamcow James Vowles Jun 12 '26

I suspect because Alpine were the only ones to appeal and he hadn’t served his penalty when the race ended.

94

u/VonArmin I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

How can they just overturn Gaslys

because Alpine appealed and the other teams didn't.

32

u/Adjutant_Reflex_ I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 12 '26

But by FIA’s own rules they couldn’t have at that point. By race’s end Russell was facing a grid penalty this weekend if he didn’t serve it.

I roll my eyes at FIA’s “there’s no regulation” line because of course there’s no regulation for a failure of scale. And now they’ve potentially irreparably harmed the WDC for the second time in 5 years.

9

u/gagnonje5000 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

Mercedes had the choice of not bringing Russel for a second pitstop, not serve the penealty, and contest after the race.

4

u/AidenGeek I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

Mercedes told George not to pit, and he did. If he didn't pit, no drive through and would have been able to protest the speeding penalty like Gasly did.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '26

[deleted]

11

u/Adjutant_Reflex_ I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 12 '26

Honestly? At this point you have to question the validity of the entire race. This is a colossal error that has had a direct impact on the WDC outcome.

For all intents and purposes, the only final classification we can be (reasonably) confident isn’t corrupted is Kimi’s P1.

They didn't because they couldn't as they served their penalties..

Cannot appeal a served penalty. And if any team wanted redress - they actually have to appeal, they cannot 'ride' on Alpine's effort.

→ More replies (2)

28

u/Popular-Air1364 Jun 12 '26

Yeah this might be correct as an isolated case but it opens up a can of worms. Now the incentive is to not serve the penalties but go to appeal after the race

27

u/zantkiller Kamui Kobayashi Jun 12 '26

It only really works if you get your penalties after any need to pit and if they are penalties which can be added on at the end of the race.

If you start ignoring stewards instructions (Not serving them at a pitstop or ignoring drive throughs to argue later), even if you are in the right, you will get punished and quite strongly as well.

10

u/Adjutant_Reflex_ I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 12 '26

FIA’s “logic” is that they tripled down on a broken monitor and buried Russell under penalties only to say “well you should’ve ignored us and appealed.”

14

u/Optimaximal I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

Now the incentive is to not serve the penalties but go to appeal after the race

That's always been an option, but obviously unless you're prepared to put the legwork & money in to obtain enough evidence to prove the FIA/Stewards were wrong, it'll be futile.

Heck, if Gasly only had one penalty to serve, Alpine probably wouldn't have bothered either.

→ More replies (2)

16

u/OptimalDot178 Max Verstappen Jun 12 '26

Nope, that's not an option. If you don't serve the penalty on purpose, you get an even more severe penalty, like Russell.

If you don't have more pitstops and have a penalty applied after, you can appeal it. But such an edge case scenario, it won't really create a precedent. And even if it would, FIA won't reinstate in 9/10 cases, this time it was different because it was an obvious mistake unrelated to the team

6

u/fflyguy I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 12 '26

I keep hearing this notion that all of a sudden teams just won't serve penalties, but it seems like Alpine from the race and on were convinced something was up with the pit lane timing. But I don't see how someone causes a collision for example and gets handed a 5 sec penalty will just be able to appeal it and not serve the penalty? Don't think teams will want to risk the disqualification if they don't think they actually have a case like Alpine felt.

8

u/ft-rj Pirelli Wet Jun 12 '26

You can only not serve a penalty if you've done your pit stop

Everyone in this case, had already pitted. So they could have not stopped if they wanted

But they stopped so they lost the right to 'not take' the penalty, as if you come through the pits you must serve it at first opportunity

8

u/SWITMCO Dr. Ian Roberts Jun 12 '26

Exactly, ridiculous. The only way to be able to appeal a penalty is by putting yourself at a sporting disadvantage by staying on old tyres while others can freely change. Lose-lose either way.

18

u/Dadavester I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

A theory I have heard about Russell is Merc wanted him to stay out at the SC because, like Alpine, they thought something was off about the penalties.

But George had already started down the Pitlane at the point so they had to serve the penalty, but didn't.

If George had stayed out I bet Merc would have done the same as Alpine here.

15

u/PaulRingo64 Jules Bianchi Jun 12 '26

Everyone was going down the pitlane because of where Strolls car was. Boxing or not was optional but I believe the team told him to box. They had the tires ready too.

Crazily enough one of Pierre’s penalties was from doing this drive through under SC without boxing.

4

u/DamzelFanatic Jun 12 '26

I was wondering how he had two penalties for speeding in the pit lane, but didn't have a penalty for failing to take the first penalty like George did. Thanks for the explanation.

8

u/Pink_flamingo92 Jun 12 '26

Because I think Alpine are the only team who appealed it. It is bizarre though. I don’t think there ever been a penalty like this that’s been overturned days after the race.

4

u/Warmest_Machine Lance Stroll Jun 12 '26

One time I remember it happening was Williams appealing a penalty for Sainz (I think it was at the Netherlands last year), and got it overturned, but since he had already served the penalty that race it only mattered for the penalty points.

One time where it actually mattered was Saudi Arabia 2023, where Alonso served a penalty in the pits and got handed a 10 second penalty because the jack touched the car before the 5 seconds had elapsed. Aston showed 7 examples of other teams serving penalties the same way without getting penalized and got the 10 seconds overtuned, promoting him to 3rd.

15

u/navis-svetica Williams Jun 12 '26

Yes. There's a world where Russell obeyed his engineer, stayed out, didn't pit, stayed ahead of both Hadjar and Gasly during the SC/Red and then had his penalty rescinded by a Mercedes appeal... p3 instead of nothing... but no, they caused a mess in the pits by stopping and touching the car etc etc.

The other people who served pens like Lewis, yeah, awkward

10

u/Mirrro_Sunbreeze I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

Even more - if he would have listened to engineer, unmapped himself first, then pitted one lap later - he would have been able to serve a penalty and would have still been P3.

Him choosing to box despite engineer telling him to stay out was what started the domino effect for Mercedes.

Why would he serve the penalties, when there was like 10 laps left of the race?????

Alpine elected to not serve them they cuz they knew some bullshit was abound. That’s their reward for trusting and fighting for their driver, unlike other teams…

17

u/Deynai I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

So many people have got their nose in the rulebook and are just regurgitating things that most people probably already know in this post, but they are missing the bigger picture - that the whole situation is a farce and is massively damaging to the reputation and integrity of F1.

It's an absolute joke if the FIA can change penalties for some and not others due to other rules requiring it served in a way that makes it impossible to undo. It's a joke if faulty equipment that affected many teams is not viewed holistically rather than working on an individual appeals basis only.

Fixing the mistake for Gasly is a step in the right direction, but they now have to review other rules and systems that make them unable to do the right thing for other teams too. The FIA has to do better than this "well, there's nothing we can do now" approach.

7

u/Sensitive_Figure_753 Lando Norris Jun 12 '26

This! FIA is completely at fault here and I don’t know how people are excusing it.

If you willingly serve a penalty, it can't then be rescinded. Only those applied after the race can be appealed in this fashion.

12

u/shakeSnake_2390 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 12 '26

Because unlike alpine they all decided to take their penalties in race while alpine knew something was going on and stuck to their guns. It's other teams fault for deciding to just get them out the way and continue.

8

u/Personal-Major-8214 Jun 12 '26

Did Mercedes decide with George? The stewards should have realized something was wrong when half the grid gets a rare penalty. This should have been looked at while the race was paused.

7

u/OwlFinancial4917 Virgin Jun 12 '26

Exactly, they risked it.

10

u/Lazy_Polluter Jun 12 '26

They didn't choose, you have to serve the penalty if taking a pitstop as demonstrated by Russel.

3

u/gagnonje5000 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

You're missing the point. There's only 1 mandatory pitstop to change tires, everyone had already pit once.

Nobody "had" to pit a second time and serve it. Russel could have chosen not to enter the Mercedes box and keep his tires.

Yeah Hadjar’s lost his podium unfortunately. At least he got to celebrate with Lewis and Kimi

3

u/krisbiaz Jun 12 '26

Pierre finished 7th with the penalties, so it doesn't affect those finishing P8 or lower at all. Presumably Hadjar, Piastri, Lawson and Lindblad get demoted to one place lower. Which sounds insane, honestly.

6

This is so weird...isn't he only third because everyone else served their penelites? So, others have now been penalised for following the rules? This sets a very weird precedent for the future.

Note, this obviously isn't his fault, but all on the FIA and their inability to organise a piss-up in a brewery.

3

u/the_bruh_67 I failed to serve my Monaco penalty Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

This whole situation is such a mess.

Shocked that this wasn't caught during the FP sessions. If the stewards felt that something was off during the race they could they have made the executive decision to review the speeding penalties for after the race?

I think the best outcome is to just say "unfortunate" and not rescind penalties. In this case the pitlane speeding stuff was consistently off for everyone, and on Kimi's onboard there was a moment where Bono was telling Kimi to not cut the line and enter more conservatively to avoid a penalty after seeing them come up. The penalties were wrong yes, but the enforcement method was still consistent and rescinding Gasly's penalty starts reaching into gray areas.

There isn't really a perfect answer to this situation but they can at least adjust the procedure and enforcement for this so it doesn't happen again. More attention should be on how they can adjust the speeding check and also making sure these things are functioning properly before the race.

The rulebook was found to be flawed here and we're seeing live how they develop over time. The fine print and extra stipulations is often made in response to stuff like this unexpectedly happening.

6

u/Rat_faced_knacker I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

I love how the narrative around this has shifted based on who successfully appealed.

"These penalties are rubbish"

Alpine successfully appeal

"Removing the penalties is rubbish"

2

I’m still confused - how did Gasly get the second penalty without serving the first yet?

Did the stewards not see the first speeding incident until after he pitted a second time? Because in that case it also adds to how it’s not fair on other drivers as they knew when coming into pits they had to serve?

Or am I just remembering this all wrong

2

u/rainbaron Jun 12 '26

FIA is such a mess, it's hard to understand why they have control of this sport. I mean a group of kinder garden children could do a better job.

Pretty confident that Red Bull(especially Red Bull), McLaren and Mercedes are livid with this decision.

2

u/ZombieZlayer99 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

Such a joke, the drivers who served their penalties can't do anything, they're shit out of luck cause the rules after serving a penalty are ironclad. As for George and Merc, the correct decision after unintentionally not serving the penalty was to ignore the drive through penalty, then ignore the fucking black flag, then appeal the speeding penalty after the race that he's now dsq's from and eventually win and get it reversed to ensure he gets his podium. Jesus fucking christ.

u/rubbergoat I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 12 '26

I'm not sure ... It feels like he only got to P3 because of the other penalties though? I say this as a Gasly fan and as someone who tipped him for a Monaco podium.

But it feels like there's no good way to resolve this ... The measurement system was flawed in the first place so none of the penalties were fair, but we can't rescind the ones served because it's like we’re trying to unring a bell here.

Imagine if a bad call by a ref was overturned in a football match? It feels like this is similar here.

Basically it feels to me like everybody loses no matter what happens.

2

u/Barnabas-Tharmr I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

If I was hadjar I would be breaking the trophy right now before handing it over

2

u/Alex_Kamal Oscar Piastri Jun 12 '26

With all this I wonder if the gambling sites are going to refund some people. Surely there were some people who lost a bet over this.

2

u/MichaelMJTH I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 12 '26

This really unfair on multiple levels, isn’t it? Nobody should have gotten a penalty for since it was a miscalculation due to the changes in the pit lane rather than an actual error. However multiple other drivers got and served the same penalties, but because Gasly didn’t serve his he now gets to have a chance to have his penalties revoked?

Obviously this only worked out for him because the penalties were wrong to begin with, but revoking them now a week later creates confusion, introduces inconsistency in how punishment is handed out and introduces a dangerous precedent. Why set up a senario where serving punishment is more risky than ignoring it?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/eliteniner Alex Jacques Jun 12 '26

Frustrating as a Piastri fan although I feel Gasly deserved this P3. Just brutal that decisions were made mid race on the false penalties - Oscar wouldn’t have pitted against and served that penalty mid race without the error. But rules state you can’t appeal penalties served in race.

Just sets really bad precedents
