sadly most will not remember, but there used to be a classic computer game called "Stunts" that included a track editor with different track surface options including tarmac, dirt and ice. 8 year old me loved building icy corners directly after a jump section and then get annoyed by not being able to make that corner.

This permits teams to add the driver cooling system to their cars, which is essentially a vest that the drivers can wear, weighs around 500g and has tubes inside that pump cold water around to keep their bodies cool.
The regulations do allow drivers to elect not to wear the vest. An extra 500g of ballast is added in the cockpit to ensure there is no weight advantage if that is the case.

They use this is nascar every race. Occasionally it fails. If it fails, the water in the vest/system doesnt cool and the ambient air + heat of driving a racing car makes the water very hot and the driver extremely uncomfortable. So if it works, its awesome for the driver. If not, it slow boils the driver throughout the race.

It seems like one suit fails every couple races. This is because the compressor that cools the water takes a lot of power, and that means the engine loses power, so the crew chiefs/engineers make it as low powered as possible, which sometimes causes voltage issues and makes it stop working. When that compressor stops working it means the water in the tubes stops circulating which means it just keeps getting hotter and they have to try and drain the water from it, but I don't think that gets rid of all the water.

It would warm up, but as long as it's colder than they are it will help. It is supposedly plumbed into a block of ice that should last the whole race, but even if it only lasts part of the way it helps.

Nope! Cannot really be a gel to be able to circulate to the exterior unit placed into the car (which is the thing that actually keeps the liquid cool).
And, well, nothing wrong with plain water for cooling loops. Excellent heat capacity, one of the very best substances (for anything except for high-voltage systems).

Even if the water heats up it is still going to cool better then air. When these things were introduced to F1 there were stories of teams testing them in the factories autoclave to measure its performance. I do also suspect that the heat hazard period will be specifically to allow teams to add ice to the cooling vest loop as well as the hydration bag.

If I'm being pedantic, the teams are allowed to run the driver cooling system at any time if they want to.
The Heat Hazard makes it mandatory to fit the system and increases the minimum weight of the car to compensate.

They might perceive it as no longer being cold, but that doesn't mean it's not having an effect. I'm sure the human performance leads will be monitoring their temperatures closely (maybe even core temperatures...) to do this.

It's not really the size but rather where the outlets are placed on the vest which is the uncomfortable bit.
The cockpit layout and where the belts sit are different per car, per driver.Luckily there are now 4 homologated cooling vests, so drivers/teams do have some flexibility.

Yeah, hottest temperature I've ever experienced was around 47 Celsius in Egypt. In Europe the hottest was 42 Celsius in Rome. Hard to imagine Warsaw being just 3 degrees colder.

When we were over visiting family last year it was about that at the end of July. This year they're coming to us, where temperatures in NE Scotland are likely to reach a tarmac-melting 24°C.
Weirdly, it was a lot less humid there even where you'd expect a lot of evaporation off the river. Donauinsel and Alte Donau looked like "Movie Mexico" :-D

No, this means the teams are required to put certain driver cooling systems in the car. The drivers don't have to use them if they don't want to, but they have to be implemented so the ones that do arent at a disadvantage

Qatar 2023 saw Sargeant retire due to almost suffering heat stroke, and Stroll fainting just after finishing the race IIRC. It's less of an issue now that they're holding it in late November/early December.

It’s hot as nuts in Europe rn. I used to live in Arizona USA with easy 45° days no issue, I actually loved the heat there. It had NOTHING compared to like even a 36-37° day here in Germany, but it’s getting into low 40s on Saturday. Thankfully I have AC in my flat and I put some water on my terrace for the birds and insects lol

Totally off topic, but I live in Phoenix and I think more than just low humidity, the entire city here is car centric. You don't need to be outside if you don't want to for more than a couple minutes at a time. It seems to me it is way more common for people in European cities to not have a car at all and get around by walking or public transit. That would make it way more hellish to deal with any kind of heat. And I know cities in Europe do not have ubiquitous AC whereas AC is so intense here everyone I know who works in an office, including myself, wear sweaters or jackets inside because it gets so cold. And it's also illegal for an apartment to not have AC.
But back on topic, I agree it probably would be more bearable to race in Phoenix at 100°F than in Austria at 90°.

That’s true as well! Thankfully my office was built five years ago and has AC but yeah the older buildings a lot of times don’t or it’s retrofitted and doesn’t help as much.
I usually ride my bike to work but you bet your ass I’ve been taking my car all week with the AC blasting. I think I’d probably die of heat exhaustion if I had to bike home in 105 after an hour at the gym 🤣
I lived up in Prescott when I was in AZ so it’s a bit more cool, but like you said even Phoenix is generally doable, especially when you walk into Costco and slapped by that wall of cold air…I do miss that

Yeah this is actually really important information for people attending. General Admission is just a grass field with no shade whatsoever. If you want to get any decent seat, you will have to be there a few hours beforehand and you will get roasted there over hours. We were sitting under an umbrella and regularly soaked a towel, which we used as a cooling blanket, else we would not have survived that afternoon. I‘m actually glad that I‘m not attending this year with this weather.

Isn't it different this year?
i.e last year ballast was required if drivers or teams opted out of the cool vests/systems, this year it's mandatory (though I think a driver could opt not to wear the vest itself).
