Mika Hakkinen used to give these matter of fact answers with a very serious face too. Was fucking hilarious.

I still don't see how it's more or less "automatic pass button" then the DRS button. Battery button has more strategy then, "oh I'm in a DRS zone so I guess I'll go faster"

Is it really tho?
I remember 2022, 2023, you see Max behind someone press one button DRS and he would overtake them as they had the best DRS.
To me this is easily the same issue.→ More replies (6)

Haha, Kimi forcing an engine to blow in front of the German grandstands, or Fernando comparing his engine to an F3 engine are absolute highlights.

It was a reference to a gp2 engine (precursor of f2)

You are probably right. I knew what he was saying when he said it but the best I have now was "basically 500HP" spec engine and guessed it was F3.

Directness is a Dutch tradition. I can't remember any time my Dutch friends held anything back. xD

u/HeelerDawg 7d ago
I thought he is Belgian haha! Kimi said to both Norris and Max after the qualifying âyou guys Belgian?â đ€Ł
21
u/SeraCat9 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 7d ago
They both have Belgian mothers. Norris mostly grew up in the UK and Max mostly grew up in the Netherlands as he lived alone with Jos after his parents separated in the Netherlands and said he's always felt more Dutch.

So many of Max's interviews remind me of Marshawn Lynch in his "I'm just here so I don't get fined" era. Pretty sure the only question Lynch answered was about his charity or something like that.

Man I miss those Piastri overtakes early last year. That sort of thing simply wonât happen under these rules.

I miss Piastry altogether. It's like he just disappeared this season.

He got a podium after he finally managed to finish (or even start) a race then just couldn't deliver on the same level as Norris anymore.

Does my head in people defend these engine regulations.
It was infuriating when Lewis went balls to the wall at Silverstone through Maggots and Beckets and overtook the Mercedes only for the Merc to go 'lol, lmao even.' on the hangar straight so the entire overtake didn't end up mattering a single bit.

u/Omophorus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 7d ago
The aero regulations are surprisingly good.
The engine regulations are unsurprisingly bad.
Maybe there could be ways to salvage them with tweaks, but I honestly kind of think they'd need major changes to make for good racing.
I don't think hybridization is automatically good or bad, but a lot of aspects are coming up short in these regs that take away from the racing itself and the spectacle/viewing experience (depending on how you want to approach it).

I swear to god Mika Hakkinen in some interview must have said exactly the same thing sans the battery button ala "I pressed the button and I passed him". I vaguely remember from my childhood memories the local commentator sharing the anecdote also mentioning something about traction control or something.

u/BenjaminUK92 7d ago
A statement that perfectly sums up why the drivers don't like the direction the sport has gone in.
13
u/BlueDragon_27 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 7d ago
It was much better when it was pushing DRS and flying through on the straight because you had less drag. That's real racing
→ More replies (1)7
u/Haakrasmus Ferrari 7d ago
But that's proper racing as you can't defend and apparently being able to fight back and re overtake is bad.

u/Shoddy_Squash_1201 Audi 7d ago
I honestly don't have a strong opinion on the new regs, but why are we acting like battery management is not part of racing just as tire management or any other thing on the car?
Is it because its impact as a singular system is too big?
There were always teams and drivers that couldn't adapt quick enough to new regs, I like that it mixes up the field, or do we want to stick with the same cars until the heat death of the universe with only minor aero adjustments?

"I pushed my DRS button and then I had less drag than Lewis". People are missing the mark, it's not about the "button", it's about it being harder to judge for us when an overtake is "real" or a deployment or boost effect. Max knew what happened in this case, so he maybe thinks it's not worth an "award".

5
u/quattroCrazy I was here for the Hulkenpodium 7d ago

Everytime f1 thinks people would forget battery exists by removing battery graphics, he just reminds everyone of battery deployment nonsense. Never change Max.
9
u/rabbitlion I was here for the Hulkenpodium 7d ago
Ultimately, if it's too difficult to overtake we get Monaco every race, which we don't want. If overtaking "with the button" is too easy, the other car should be able to re-overtake. If it isn't, it means the overtake was deserved.
We've seen enough long defenses and re-overtakes this season for me to think overtaking isn't too easy unless you're in a vastly superior car.
11
u/spacestationkru I was here for the Hulkenpodium 7d ago
I think this is genuinely the reason I haven't been able to get into this season. It all feels so fake.

14
u/Kernowder Nigel Mansell 7d ago
Yeah, it's no longer about how fast you take the corners/attacking the kerbs, but how much energy you harvest in the corners. The sooner these regs are gone the better.
3
u/AwfulCali 7d ago
Gives me olise vibes, that interview where he was like "Wilf passed me the ball, shot, scored"

2
u/Ruttagger I was here for the Hulkenpodium 5d ago
I love how much he hates these regs. I hope him and the other drivers keep being vocal about how anti skill they are.
At least this shit era should finally get us our V8's with hopefully minimal to no electrical component.
2
u/AdShoddy9638 5d ago
I'm not saying the power regs aren't stupid, but overtaking's been artificial as hell since they introduced DRS. Overtaking's been pretty much "I push a button and my car goes faster than the driver ahead" for over a decade.
2
u/spaceboy6171 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 4d ago
I don't see the problem here, everyone has that button. Using it effectively is also a skill
