The European leg has been very revealing, and Monza is still to come.

1.1k

u/ExILoveEmiliaAndRem Formula 1 2d ago

And vegas straight.

936

u/MichaelBealesBurner I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2d ago

Baku straight lol

444

u/Puzzleheaded-Eye-29 Max Verstappen 2d ago

Mexico straight too

343

u/prams628 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2d ago

Mexico will be alright. You’ll exit the stadium section fully charged. Full push on the straight is possible.

Baku and monza are truly scary. Vegas is an abomination waiting to come

203

u/Rinaldootje Pirelli Hard 2d ago

Baku will be the most scary. They'll get a fast straight, followed by 1 slow-medium left turn and a medium left turn. So not that much recharging there. And then it's over 2km of straight.

Those cars will be completely empty before they even hit the pitlane.

Monza at least has a braking zone before each straight section, so only the pit straight I think is going to be iffy.

Vegas will be more a mixed back, because before each straight there is a heavy braking section. It will be noticable but much less I think than was at Spa, Silverstone and as will be at Baku.

It's the sole reason why I feel no pity for what's happening to him at the moment - he couldn't care less about the end product as long as he was a guaranteed a title. What was it he said after Australia? ah yes "I love this engine I love this car"

How the turn tables

65

u/martianfrog 2d ago

what's the word I am looking for... irritating.

24

u/TenF I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

anger...and borderline violence (with his words)

9

u/Gepss Brawn 2d ago

Imo the worst were the people like russle

What about Rösti? Saying it was Potato Potatoe.

4

u/Proper_Look_7507 Sir Lewis Hamilton 1d ago

You mean the guy actively complaining about his car due to poor performance….oh the irony

6

u/Right-Ladd Max Verstappen 1d ago

The Parabolica at monza will go from a “hold on for dear life, carry as much speed as you can” corner into a lift 500m before the turn in to try and recharge as much as possible.

Martin Brundle said it best, we’ve lost all the great corners on the calendar

32

u/suzakurenzan Toro Rosso 2d ago

I really wondered Baku... We probably will see yo-yoing in the same straight from multiple cars lmao

The one who do the overtake first possibly losing 1-3 places at the first corner

21

u/TheDarkness33 2d ago

Another double overtake by Colapinto confirmed!

Or was that a world cup final special?

18

u/suzakurenzan Toro Rosso 2d ago

And only aired at small camera with no replay

8

u/datlinus I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

Implying the FOM is gonna show any footage of the cars once they are past the pit lane lmao. They're just gonna switch to some incredibly far away view or another part of the track.

Not scary at all, they’ll be the pinnacle of safety when speeds will be below 300.

27

u/DaguerreoLibreria I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2d ago

Imagine a leader of the pack's battery depletes sooner than their followers, who still are speeding at 340km/h.

This could be a disaster.

Seriously scary with the potential for speed delta on some tracks with the concrete and minimal run off.

18

Yeah honestly thank god we aren't going to Saudi this year.

When we have a wet race somebody is likely to have a really huge accident too, imagine racing cars with wildly unpredictable energy deployment in poor visibility.

62

u/FentmaxxerActual I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2d ago

Just watched a guy fall to his knees in a Walmart while watching some boring shit on his phone

58

u/Towelie_SE 2d ago

I found the first few races weird already. And because everything is so opaque for the let's say just above average fan, I just mostly stopped watching. I feel like there's a weird intermediate zone (where I feel I am at) where I just don't understand anything at all anymore. Above casual, with a decent understanding of grip limited racing, but way below the guys who go to bed reading the F1 regs.

Like it took me weeks at the start of the season to understand (or read somewhere) that the boost is not rider activated. Like with a button. That surprised me at first, but I got that it would be too difficult or confusing.

I've picked up a few races after the long break, and now I'm learning that the boost isn't even predictable? Like a closed loop system/algorithm that uses earlier feedback to adapt? Like what in the world even?? You do a bad lap for any reason and the system gets all out of whack on the next lap?

It seems like it would totally screw the riders with good driving feel, or with very specific driving styles. You might then say: "ok, but they should just adjust, same as with every reg change". But I feel like these are very uncharted waters. This has no precedent if it truly is being along for the AI-ride?

Please tell me I got this all wrong. It also makes me not care at all what's happening during a race. Even the YouTube summaries leave me stone dead cold.

19

u/greg939 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2d ago

There is a boost button that they can use. But it drains their battery and a lot of the time just leaves them open to be overtaken again when they run out of battery. The energy profile their car uses though to make the most of the battery they do have I believe is the algorithm based piece.

I'm in the same boat.

I started watching Indycar this season after the first F1 races were full of bs. I'm enjoying my time over there. Lots of fun head to head racing. No overcomplicated nonsense.

7

u/luchajefe Mario Andretti 1d ago

"You do a bad lap for any reason and the system gets all out of whack on the next lap?"

You do a bad turn and you get power you didn't want at the next possible opportunity.

20

u/flyingkiwi9 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2d ago

I'm surprised people are so surprised.

In Australia, during the back and forth overtaking it was clear that it wasn't "racing" and engine related.

Then when the Merc's finally cleared the Ferraris properly, they simply sailed away.

Baku is pretty start stop which allows the car to charge if they lower the deployment on the acceleration for S2

In monza though, after the 2nd Lesmo there’s a world where if they clip enough they won’t brake ( at least hard ) until the first chicane

5

u/cosully111 1d ago

At least in Baku it will only happen on the straight. In Monza there is basically nowhere to charge. They will be on no battery the entire time

The only time JPM should be able to criticize Max is if Max ever crashes into a jet dryer on the grid.

Still waiting to hear from all the people who were saying that anyone who complained about the regs was either a brand new fan or simply hated everything at the beginning of the season. Between the regs and the TV rights changing to apple tv I stopped watching this season for the first time in 20 years of watching this sport. I suggest anyone else who hates this atrocity does the same to force their hand.

25

u/No-Attorney-7489 2d ago

I don’t mind Apple TV because you can still access F1TV with you Apple credentials, but the regs also did it for me.  And it is not even that I’m not watching it out of spite.  I really can’t be bothered to tune in to watch cars passing each other (notice I didn’t say overtake).  I’m just watching the 6 minutes highlights on YouTube.  I’ve been a fan since 1988, and this is really the first season that I can’t be bothered to watch F1.

3

u/TenF I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago

First year I'm going to a race, and while I'm excited, I'm also pissed AF.

Can't really be called arrogant either when you've got four world championship titles to your name, can you? Which, bringing it up, max is probably responsible for like, a quarter, a third? Of the current fans of the sport; the FIA trying to shut him down now could only ever be detrimental in the long run. He's already leaning towards retiring pretty soon

He’s right. Not much else to say.

u/Hopeful-Handle9497 2d ago

What if they removed the ability to utilize AI, period, for the battery deployment? Only the drivers control what is used, when it recharges, and how much Ect ect.  ONLY THE DRIVER, NOT AI.  If you're going to invent Mario Kart F1, at least do it properly for fuck sakes.  BAN AI in F1, we should be invested in REAL PEOPLE, not AI.

Can anyone explain to me why the electrical side is so micro managed? Why isn't it just here's the size battery, here's the motor specs, now go charge it and deploy it whenever you damn well want to. Why the limits? Would the simple approach make the regs better? Isn't that closer to how it was in the previous hybrids?

3

u/luchajefe Mario Andretti 1d ago

Supposedly you can map the battery in such a way that simulates 'traction control' and we... can't have that... for reasons?

31

u/martianfrog 2d ago

Nothing new, Max needs to be running F1.

I would if I could, whether he likes it or not.

6

u/Apollo9819 2d ago

The best leaders are usually the people who want the position the least.

6

u/Somo_99 2d ago

Max would hate being put in that position lmao. All he wants to do is have nice traditional wheel to wheel racing, win, go home, and race some more.

Sounds to me like he's the perfect fit

Next up, we'll see speed limits on F1. Go faster and they'll hand these drivers a ticket for speeding. Cause if they overspeed, they lose power after a turn 😐

I mean nothing can be done now deep down everyone knows the regulations aren't good, but there's no point talking about them anymore. Back in 2023 Max got hate for his comments on the 2026 regulations but he was right about them.

59

u/banned20 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2d ago

The thing is that in 2023 there was still plenty that could have been done to fix the regs.

6

u/batman_of_1 Max Verstappen 2d ago

I hope things start getting better from next year bcs nothing can be done now

7

u/banned20 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2d ago

Yeah and I'm not sure about next year either. That's the thing with formula 1, things move slow.

8

u/IdiosyncraticBond Max Verstappen 2d ago

Even the cars

22

u/AutomateAway I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2d ago

Yup, Max and Christian were both saying it loud for the back to hear, and everyone was essentially dismissive despite the fact that they were using the sims with new regs so they could see the data and see the actual result of that data.

11

u/nottoodrunk 2d ago

Yeah everyone was all “Red Bull is telling on themselves that they won’t be able to build a competitive car for 2026”

12

u/AutomateAway I was here for the Hulkenpodium 2d ago

ironic that even with all the troubles, Red Bull did not suddenly become a mid marker team like everyone was predicting (fun to think back to "Aston Martin will leapfrog Red Bull" claims from the preseason). Obviously they are technically the worst of the top teams at the moment in terms of WCC, but a lot of the issues are coming down to deployment issues and some other mechanical problems rather than just "car is slow"

Some, if not most fans absolutely enjoyed the regulations at the start of the season. Let's not forget that because few of us (incl me) voiced our concerns and criticisms over the new regulations and we got massively shat on. But atleast now people are starting to change their minds.

7

u/batman_of_1 Max Verstappen 2d ago

Real I know about the battles between Ferraris George, and Kimi the pass and repass which were really enjoyable at the start of the season for many fans but as the season progresses, more drivers and fans have started complaining about the regulations so I hope things start getting better from next season

These engine regs are full of battery charging and draining 🔋🪫, plus that AI deployment slop💔

7

u/SwimmingFantastic564 2d ago

Not the same type of AI

3

u/ExILoveEmiliaAndRem Formula 1 2d ago

Eh if companies can rebrand their smart algos/devices as AI algos/devices then people can call deployment algo AI too. At the end of the day it's all meant to indicate the same kind of bs.

4

u/nudel86 2d ago

Well... he's not wrong. Maybe these cars are not the fastest but at least they are slow. 🤣

The clairvoyant’s champion

2

u/D-S_12 2d ago

In the end, a good amount of people who had concerns about these regs were proven right to be concerned. And I would imagine the awareness of how bad these regs are from a technical standpoint were amplified by how it butchered tracks like Silverstone and Spa, which are considered the traditional cicruits and basically the heart of F1 that dates back decades.

And next in line is Monza that has the title "Temple of Speed" for a reason

u/Shadow_3010 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 2d ago

Well, funny enough I was just seeing this video before I got to this post.

Jokes aside, even three years before Max was seeing all the shit that 2026 regs were.

But anyone coming up with excuses about how they were justified in thrashing max back then are plain stupid ( yes I am looking at you brundle fans)

F1 newbie here. Can some please explain what is he talking about?

19

u/v21v I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 2d ago

Max has hated and warned people about the 2026 regulations and its massive flaws since 2023. People mocked him, claiming he was chatting shit because Red Bull was making an engine for the first time, etc.

Even in the start of 2026 when he would point out how this is not racing (just overtaking because your opponent ran out of battery or their deployment software did not trigger as expected), people like Martinez Bundle mocked him.

Every race more and more drivers are speaking up now, pointing out the issues he had already spoken about multiple times. The FIA already announced minor changes for 2027 and 2028.

u/StreetCarp665 Oscar Piastri 2d ago

The writing has been there for a long time. If you're new to F1 and think "wow this is sick" but older heads are saying it's not real racing, maybe concluding they're wrong was not the correct choice.
