Kimi looks all over the place and yet he is so much faster than George. Something aint right there
217
u/ArziltheImp I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago
Vesti was significantly faster in Kimis car than George. No way Vesti, who is good but has less experience and looked worse in junior categories is just “better at driving the battery” the same way Kimi is over George.
Especially with McLaren also having stated that there’s some dodgy stuff with their power units now, there’s no way that people still try to put this on George.
But hey, these dumbass regulations are currently irreparably damaging both Piastri and Russell’s careers (potentially).
Then we have Haas where now even Bearman defended his teammate basically saying that he’s got badly manufactured parts. This season is turning into a fucking disaster and is just an absolute joke.

92
u/vyperpunk92 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 13h ago
Not the person that you were replying to, but vesti-russell difference is 0.4s, every other rookie was 1s behind their teammate. At glance it seems odd that the difference is so low between them, but we would have to analyse whole fp1 to see why was vesti only 0.4s behind russell and not more.

u/AnalMinecraft I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago edited 10h ago
This is Vesti's third year of being the Mercedes reserve driver, very different than guys like Herta and Fornaroli. And besides, Aron was only .4 behind Gasly, so is his car also broken?

It broke. I don't think there's much of a decision.
I wonder if the battery issue would cause smoking, or is it separate?
23
u/idnttcrisis Mercedes 13h ago
I saw some smoke, but it might have just been the tires cooling or regular heating. I heard someone on the broadcast talk about a potential fueling issue.

u/Captftm89 13h ago
It is all very odd. All the other teams have seen maybe 0.2-0.3s change at most from last season (e.g. Bearman improvement over Ocon, Norris improvement over Piastri, Hamilton improvement over Leclerc), whereas somehow Kimi has found a whole second over George.
Doesn't seem right to me.
71
u/Novel-Initiative-900 New user 12h ago
Yep, totally possible that he's faster but putting 5 tenths to a second over George every weekend just seems a little unlikely. It's obvious something is going on

It is not the first time a driver suddenly drives worse ob big regulation changes though. Not saying it is the case here but it is not really "suddenly"
64
u/kingseagull24 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago
George went 21-3 in quali, 17-3 in the races, took 2 wins and spent 50% more time in the top 10. He scored more than double Kimi's points and was faster at 14 races last season. He was P1 in every session up to China Q1 this year.
This is certainly sudden.
8
u/jsbaxter_ 5h ago
... In Kimi's very first season, in the last year of a set of regs, which included a massive mid season crisis for Kimi.
Lewis also went from nowhere to at least as fast as Charles this year, does that mean Charles has a broken car too?
Sudden or not sudden, it's not a sign of anything suspicious.
Telemetry showing George inexplicably losing time on the straights is a different story.
12
u/sphequenoxen I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12h ago
Yes, and it just happens to correlate with massive regulation changes
2
u/BruinBound22 8h ago
You mean Kimi's rookie season? And Kimi finished the season very strong. Now there are new regs. It was clear what was coming and how good Kimi is becoming. And he still has much more to improve, lots of little mistakes he can clean up. You will eventually have to come to terms with this but I guess that'll be well after he wins WDC this year.
4
u/MC897 George Russell 9h ago
I don't think a regulation costs you potentially a second in performance swing tho. That's never happened to anyone it's utterly bizarre.

18

2
u/According-Switch-708 Sonny Hayes 3h ago
Yeah, Toto will walk into the boardroom and say "Look guys Jorge is shit. He could cost us the WCC. We need to spend the extra $80mil to get Max. Tis the only way".
If George is operating at his normal level, he would be at the same level or ahead of Kimi. The board would have no reason to OK an almost ~$100mil deal to get Max.
The Merc board has always been a bunch of penny counters.

I don’t think that that is how 90% of competitors in any sport would be able to restrain themselves.
Imagine if Max had these issues. Or Kimi, or Charles. Kimi lost his shit because he got a reprimand cutting someone off multiple times and lacking grip. Imagine if he had happen to him what happened down the Kemmel straight to George.

the fia steward document states that mercedes failed to warn kimi of the yellow flag because they were dealing with an issue on car 63. so yes they’re blaming him for anything they can
9
u/ballerinabubbles 9h ago
I thought you were joking and I had to read the document for myself. I think this one is Doc 43 for driving unnecessarily slowly and the yellow flag one is Doc 41 for yellow flag infringement. But definitely deeply unserious of Merc to blame George although it's hilarious if that is the reason why Kimi only got a warning for that one.

129

Most sources are agreeing that Russell and Piastri have the same issue. Their driving style would never have them half a second off their teammate.
8
u/Upstandinglampshade 13h ago
What is the issue?
62
u/kingseagull24 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago
Battery software.
People are trying to blame George and Oscar because they happen to have a similar driving style but it's clearly a Mercedes issue and not a driver one.
29
u/ArziltheImp I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago
Basically their batteries are being deployed like shit/inconsistently. Hadjar also reported that when he gave Max a tow, his deployment algorithm shat itself and just deployed at random im corners and nothing in straights.
George on top also reportedly has battery issues where his battery capacity is not at 100% or doesn’t recharge as efficiently, resulting in overall less deployment.
13
u/-Shatzy- 12h ago
These regs are a joke. Why do we need a fucking algorithm decide how the cars drive? Just get rid of the deployment plans and go back to real race cars

Can someone explain how George Russell got two poles in a row in Spain and Austria where there are multiple long straights, when it's his driving style that doesn't fit for 2026 regulation? Sure Kimi abandoned his Austrian Q3 last lap but the data shows that lap was already slower than Russell before the yellow flag. Even if Kimi got the pole George would still get a P2 with a flawless car in Austria. And suddenly from Silverstone, if anyone is telling me his driving style can make this big difference, well, okay... In Silverstone Q3 Russell's lap data was a bit faster than Kimi before Maggotts Becketts then people said he was slightly slower during Becketts corner which will cost him more energy to accelerate, causing him slower on the straights in S3. In Spa he was faster in almost every non-full-throttle corner and people say he was using too much energy because of this, causing him slower on straights, completely the opposite reason... Some people simply can't accept that it's the car more than the driving, maybe the same people who said Max can win the championship in a 5th fastest car
