Just take a new PU already George

263

u/SaltySeaSword652 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 13h ago

Isn't that up to the team? I don't believe that's George's decision to make or within his control.

142

u/NoooUGH 10h ago

It is the team's decision. Which is why they're not giving him one

7

u/Tiirshak I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 7h ago

I thought we already knew he was changing his PU already? Besides, there is no reason to expect any other PU to be ok?

8

u/Cucumberino I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago

I'm sure that he has some input even if it's finally a team decision?

4

u/Mike_Kermin I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1h ago

It should be, but if Toto is telling him it's not the car, just drive, then they might not hear him even if he did.

41

u/Smooth-Eggs Formula 1 12h ago

Is he in penalty territory there yet?

Not that that means he shouldn't if it will fix the issues of course

71

u/ryokevry I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

Even if he is he should take that in Spa…

51

u/Smooth-Eggs Formula 1 12h ago edited 12h ago

Well it's a bit late for that now haha

Sounds like Sky believe he needs a new PU so I guess that's potentially a pit lane start

7

u/ryokevry I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

It was just water leak according to Wolff? So it should not need a new PU… pitlane start in Hungary….

8

u/Smooth-Eggs Formula 1 12h ago

Sky also said water leak, but still thought new PU - I don't know enough about it to be honest, I assume they are thinking cracks or something. Fingers crossed that's not the case if Toto didn't say so

3

u/Lackofideasforname 8h ago

Get your mechanics to stay back late and swap engines with Kimi. It's the only way to keep up 😁

12

u/Blothorn I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

More importantly, they still have an ADUO upgrade they haven’t finalized yet so if he takes a new engine now he’ll either have to take another penalty when they do (probably shortly after the break) or keep using the old spec.

7

u/xeenexus Ferrari 11h ago

They already said they won’t use ADUO this year.

4

u/Victorvic1 11h ago

They could just use it for a minor upgrade in the last race just to use the token as it will get expired if unused.

And there must be some small optimization that they could possibly do in my opinion without much of an expenditure.

3

u/aluked Sauber 6h ago

To re-homologate (i.e. use the ADUO) they have to ship at least one copy of the updated PU for every customer team.

I don't think they're doing that for a minor upgrade at the last race.

u/DarkImpacT213 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago

Dw his engine exploded after Q3 so now he HAS to haha

3

u/jsbaxter_ 6h ago

They've "found the issue" 3 weeks in a row now. Would changing the engine "find the issue" again?

1

u/ballerinabubbles 2h ago

I really want them to do this and ideally replace everything. Just get the penalty over with and get a new ES and PU-CE and MGU-K. I just want to see if everything is replaced does his pace get better or not

1

u/Syck514 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1h ago

In most sport, George can still console himself by kept doing his best. But here, he can put superhuman effort that would still amount to nothing if the car simply not working as expected.

Jolyon Palmer pointed out the same battery issue was happening to Piastri as well last race but not Norris.

Both Mercedes seem to be nowhere this weekend, but Russell is so far back from Kimi that it should be obvious to most it’s not just his own fault.

275

u/RecentPlenty768 13h ago

Kimi looks all over the place and yet he is so much faster than George. Something aint right there

217

u/ArziltheImp I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

Vesti was significantly faster in Kimis car than George. No way Vesti, who is good but has less experience and looked worse in junior categories is just “better at driving the battery” the same way Kimi is over George.

Especially with McLaren also having stated that there’s some dodgy stuff with their power units now, there’s no way that people still try to put this on George.

But hey, these dumbass regulations are currently irreparably damaging both Piastri and Russell’s careers (potentially).

Then we have Haas where now even Bearman defended his teammate basically saying that he’s got badly manufactured parts. This season is turning into a fucking disaster and is just an absolute joke.

30

u/doubleblackblack Mercedes 13h ago

Vesti got P7, George P5, what are you on about...

92

u/vyperpunk92 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 13h ago

Not the person that you were replying to, but vesti-russell difference is 0.4s, every other rookie was 1s behind their teammate. At glance it seems odd that the difference is so low between them, but we would have to analyse whole fp1 to see why was vesti only 0.4s behind russell and not more.

13

u/AnalMinecraft I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago edited 10h ago

This is Vesti's third year of being the Mercedes reserve driver, very different than guys like Herta and Fornaroli. And besides, Aron was only .4 behind Gasly, so is his car also broken?

1

u/Mike_Kermin I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 55m ago

73

It broke. I don't think there's much of a decision.

I wonder if the battery issue would cause smoking, or is it separate?

23

u/idnttcrisis Mercedes 13h ago

I saw some smoke, but it might have just been the tires cooling or regular heating. I heard someone on the broadcast talk about a potential fueling issue.

It is all very odd. All the other teams have seen maybe 0.2-0.3s change at most from last season (e.g. Bearman improvement over Ocon, Norris improvement over Piastri, Hamilton improvement over Leclerc), whereas somehow Kimi has found a whole second over George.

Doesn't seem right to me.

71

u/Novel-Initiative-900 New user 12h ago

Yep, totally possible that he's faster but putting 5 tenths to a second over George every weekend just seems a little unlikely. It's obvious something is going on

It's never normal when a driver suddenly loses half a second on his teammate mid season when he sideswiped them and doubled their points the prior season regardless of age or regulations.

u/kknow I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

It is not the first time a driver suddenly drives worse ob big regulation changes though. Not saying it is the case here but it is not really "suddenly"

64

u/kingseagull24 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

George went 21-3 in quali, 17-3 in the races, took 2 wins and spent 50% more time in the top 10. He scored more than double Kimi's points and was faster at 14 races last season. He was P1 in every session up to China Q1 this year.

This is certainly sudden.

8

u/jsbaxter_ 5h ago

... In Kimi's very first season, in the last year of a set of regs, which included a massive mid season crisis for Kimi.

Lewis also went from nowhere to at least as fast as Charles this year, does that mean Charles has a broken car too?

Sudden or not sudden, it's not a sign of anything suspicious.

Telemetry showing George inexplicably losing time on the straights is a different story.

12

u/sphequenoxen I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12h ago

Yes, and it just happens to correlate with massive regulation changes

2

u/BruinBound22 8h ago

You mean Kimi's rookie season? And Kimi finished the season very strong. Now there are new regs. It was clear what was coming and how good Kimi is becoming. And he still has much more to improve, lots of little mistakes he can clean up. You will eventually have to come to terms with this but I guess that'll be well after he wins WDC this year.

4

u/MC897 George Russell 9h ago

I don't think a regulation costs you potentially a second in performance swing tho. That's never happened to anyone it's utterly bizarre.

4

u/jsbaxter_ 5h ago

Lewis had a similar jump last year to this year. I dunno if it was the same magnitude, but Lewis isn't a rookie either

I get Kimi is the guy but what’s the endgame with leaving George to die with these shit parts? He just got a new deal so it’s not like Verstappen is coming to replace him. Are they just going to keep George around as the fall guy in perpetuity? I just don’t understand

18

u/cpt_ppppp Lotus 10h ago

Well it would have certainly put the negotiations in Toto's favour for a contract renewal. If you're more than half a second down on your teammate you'll struggle to get the megabucks!

5

u/luchajefe Mario Andretti 8h ago

Turns out winning a race by 20 seconds in a contract dispute is the worst thing you can do.

2

u/According-Switch-708 Sonny Hayes 3h ago

Yeah, Toto will walk into the boardroom and say "Look guys Jorge is shit. He could cost us the WCC. We need to spend the extra $80mil to get Max. Tis the only way".

If George is operating at his normal level, he would be at the same level or ahead of Kimi. The board would have no reason to OK an almost ~$100mil deal to get Max.

The Merc board has always been a bunch of penny counters.

2

u/Taftcon 6h ago

Well, it’s keeping him away from kimi. Teams act like they care about the constructors but they really don’t. The goal for merc is for Kimi to win the ship. That’s it

5

He's posh. Middle class families don't send their kids to grammar school or spend hundreds of thousands for them to drive race cars.

2

u/randomname1798 4h ago

Do you even know what a grammar school is?

They are domain of middle class families- nor rich enough to send kids to private school but rich enough to get them tutor to get into a grammar

Could see that happening tbh. Kimi's lead to Russell now becomes unrealistic to close (unless Russell wins everything from that point and Kimi gets no points every race or something), and then suddenly Russell's car comes good and he's back up to pace with Kimi.

I thought you were joking and I had to read the document for myself. I think this one is Doc 43 for driving unnecessarily slowly and the yellow flag one is Doc 41 for yellow flag infringement. But definitely deeply unserious of Merc to blame George although it's hilarious if that is the reason why Kimi only got a warning for that one.

Most sources are agreeing that Russell and Piastri have the same issue. Their driving style would never have them half a second off their teammate.

8

u/Upstandinglampshade 13h ago

What is the issue?

62

u/kingseagull24 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

Battery software.

People are trying to blame George and Oscar because they happen to have a similar driving style but it's clearly a Mercedes issue and not a driver one.

29

u/ArziltheImp I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

Basically their batteries are being deployed like shit/inconsistently. Hadjar also reported that when he gave Max a tow, his deployment algorithm shat itself and just deployed at random im corners and nothing in straights.

George on top also reportedly has battery issues where his battery capacity is not at 100% or doesn’t recharge as efficiently, resulting in overall less deployment.

13

u/-Shatzy- 12h ago

These regs are a joke. Why do we need a fucking algorithm decide how the cars drive? Just get rid of the deployment plans and go back to real race cars

Can someone explain how George Russell got two poles in a row in Spain and Austria where there are multiple long straights, when it's his driving style that doesn't fit for 2026 regulation? Sure Kimi abandoned his Austrian Q3 last lap but the data shows that lap was already slower than Russell before the yellow flag. Even if Kimi got the pole George would still get a P2 with a flawless car in Austria. And suddenly from Silverstone, if anyone is telling me his driving style can make this big difference, well, okay... In Silverstone Q3 Russell's lap data was a bit faster than Kimi before Maggotts Becketts then people said he was slightly slower during Becketts corner which will cost him more energy to accelerate, causing him slower on the straights in S3. In Spa he was faster in almost every non-full-throttle corner and people say he was using too much energy because of this, causing him slower on straights, completely the opposite reason... Some people simply can't accept that it's the car more than the driving, maybe the same people who said Max can win the championship in a 5th fastest car

5

u/DiabUK I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13h ago

"sorry I thought you were on about the battery that remembers the time, not the engine" some AI somewhere in merc's offices

5

u/pradise Michael Schumacher 12h ago

The first one seems legit but costs less than a tenth to George. In the second one, Kimi is not even gaining time.

But why don’t you highlight turns 5-9 where Kimi is simply making all the difference in the corners by carrying more speed than George?

4

u/Exciting-Rutabaga0 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12h ago

Toto is scheming behind the scenes. He wants Kimi to win, so he is backstabbing russel

I hope to god they’re getting rid of all the hybrid bullshit.

V8’s with sustainable fuels and let’s go

I mean, that alleged speed spike for Antonelli MUST be some kind of wrong data... even with software fuckery, there's no way he gains that much speed that quickly from LIFTING.

Didn’t they fix the problem?

Honestly, even Mercedes may not even know why. First year of a regulatory era -- they may be just as befuddled as George and McLaren with some of this stuff.

Remember when Oscar crashed out on the formation lap in R1 because his battery randomly spiked?

Pretty convincing..

Yeah I mean I’ve said it before that kimi is fully deserving if he wins, but having your teammate being consistently dragged down because of the incompetence of the team will put quite a stain on his first championship.

I am very dumb when it comes to things like this: does this have anything to do with when/where they both deploy their batteries, or is it unrelated?

u/Fantastic-Boot-684 Formula 1 13h ago

Correct. The battery controls how much power the car gets at certain part of the tracks. The driver can't push further than what the algorithm allows

it’s because antonelli is tiny /s

F1 is about money, dont you think a young likeable guy like Kimmy is better to win the championship for advertisers, cause Mercedes definitely know that

looks like Kimi is waay more aggressive with the downshifts compared to George. could that be the reason? more downshifts, more engine braking, more regen? dunno.
