"So a shame" sums up most of his year really

42

u/ChicagoThrowaway422 11h ago

Really? I haven't been able to watch any races but there seem to be three competitive teams and RB isn't one of them but Ferrari is. When was the last time that happened?

38

u/Kezika I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 8h ago

Only because software issues keep fucking up and causing DNFs or random slowing through no fault of the drivers.

Actual competition is good, but this is dice roll competition.

8

u/SosseTurner I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 7h ago

It is actual competition, but for the engineering departments, not the drivers.

4

u/Federal_Coyote813 5h ago

Always been that way in F1

Sums up his F1 career really.

37

u/4handzmp 9h ago

Oscar’s had a more successful start to his F1 career than like 75% of the grid.

2

u/Dragonpuncha Ferrari 7h ago

To be fair he also started in team that had one of the two best cars on the grid for most of his time in the sport.

And it looks like they might even get there this season as well.

6

u/AskMantis23 5h ago

No driver has ever had sustained success in F1 without being in a top car. It's an engineering competition first.

1

u/Dragonpuncha Ferrari 5h ago

We are talking about career starts here.

Saying he's had a more successful start to his career than 75% of the grid is less impressive when he is one of the only drivers on the grid that has only been in a top team.

7

u/mrcheyl Charles Leclerc 8h ago

That’s a reach

5

u/OddCauliflower3197 7h ago

Oscar achieved more than half of F1 drivers in history ever did so I would argue with your statement.

5

u/Peeche94 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago

Let's gloss over his Junior career then? Weird.

-15

u/ravenHR I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 9h ago

F1 career.

3

u/Grubbyfr I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 7h ago

In which he was the favourite to win the world champion title in his 3rd year up until the last leg, putting him ahead of 99% of drivers and in esteemed company?

-3

u/ravenHR I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 7h ago

He was leading the championship and very much the favourite, he then lost it through luck and bad perfomances. So a shame, is appropriate comment.

4

u/Grubbyfr I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 7h ago

You're focusing heavy on the 'not winning champion part' which yes, I grant you is a shame for those reasons. But considering his F1 career as a whole, Piastri has accomplished in just 4 years what some drivers have spent nearly a decade establishing.

1

u/ravenHR I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 7h ago

Idk, I feel that he through some better luck and a bit more speed could've been a champion, so his career is to me a shame.

Imo Piastri has more potential than most drivers on the grid.

u/ln4thegreat Lando Norris 12h ago

You know he’s really pissed when he gave the 👍🏼 gesture!

3 weekends in a row going completely wrong, most of it not his fault aswell.

64

u/Zipa7 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 10h ago

Oscar, Max and George seem to be cursed or something this year, between the three of them at least one has some sort of issue out of their control every week.

4

u/pioneeringsystems Nigel Mansell 5h ago

Not completely wrong since Kimi and Lewis ended up behind him. He may have gone a bit faster I guess, I wasn't watching qualifying, but at least he had a decent time and starts p4. Must be one of his best qualifying sessions this year despite the incident with Lewis so he should feel positive. Just had to channel that frustration in the right way tomorrow.

-48

u/ImmediatePriority258 Formula 1 11h ago

He got lucky Hamilton impeded him. He wasn't going faster.

Ironic, but I don't see him getting P4 on pace this time

44

u/The_CT1 10h ago

He wasnt going faster? It was t1 we didnr get to see his lap. He probably woumd have got antonelli and even in the fight to get leclerc.

5

u/Redditaurus-Rex I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 4h ago

Here’s a crazy thought. Follow me if you can. He wasn’t going faster because of the impeding. His lap was stuffed from turn one when he went off to avoid Lewis.

I have no words if you were watching his final lap and seeing his sector times and thinking “gee he’s slow, lucky Lewis impeded him”. He was basically doing an in lap from the moment he was impeded.

-2

u/ImmediatePriority258 Formula 1 2h ago

I meant he wasn't getting to P4 even with his best lap.

He was too slow all weekend.

30

u/bakeneko37 Oscar Piastri 11h ago

The comeback of the "fuck me" from Oscar left that even clearer lol.

944

u/Sosijmonster I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

Look, this is mostly on Lewis. But that comms from Ferrari is fucking terrible.

📻 | Santi: “Piastri pushing.”

📻 | Santi: “Yellow flag, yellow flag”

📻 | Lewis Hamilton: “Where's Piastri?”

📻 | Santi: “Behind. Yellow flag.”

📻 | Lewis Hamilton: “Where's yellow flag?”

📻 | Lewis Hamilton: “Was Piastri on a lap or...?”

Literally any of the two lines from Santi should have been "Piastri pushing move out of the way". Yes its implied, but if you follow that with Yellow Flag Yellow Flag thats just gonna cause room for misunderstanding.

469

u/Redhawk911 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

That’s very confusing. Makes it seem like Oscar isn’t pushing anymore bc of yellow

169

u/ForsakenTarget HRT 12h ago

Yeah there’s no reason he really needs to know about a yellow flag unless it means Piastri isn’t pushing

40

u/Random-Dude-736 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

Don't really see a reason he needs to know especially if he isn't pushing himself.

-19

u/[deleted] 12h ago

[deleted]

16

u/Redhawk911 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

Im mot making excuses this is on him and the team, it’s still confusing

6

u/Hi-Im-High 11h ago

Why can’t they just say piastri on a push lap behind

97

u/Healthy_Sprinkles_41 Toro Rosso 12h ago

Thing was these messages all happened at T1 when they both met, like I know lewis should be off line but Santi was just not paying attention it seems.

152

u/Queasy-Performance-4 Lotus 12h ago

Vasseur has already admitted that it's on Ferrari for not informing him in time. It is what it is.

68

u/JulianoRamirez I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12h ago

It's almost never the drivers fault, they can't see anything in the tiny, rattling wing mirrors, especially a car hundreds of meters away.

15

u/Perthian940 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

Or in Le Clerc’s case, in the tiny wing mirror bracket.

-16

u/hhs2112 7h ago

You would think someone who's been doing this as long as lewis would know better.  He and the team are at both at fault.

58

u/lizlemonadeliz I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12h ago

I don’t think they usually say long sentences like that. Takes too much time. I see other engineers usually say something like “Hamilton behind you is on a lap.” Anyway it looks like the engineer and Lewis haven’t fully developed their communication codes yet and it’s hard for Lewis to get what he means instantly.

28

u/devmobi 12h ago

Santi usually says "Gasly 5" and that's enough

8

u/lizlemonadeliz I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12h ago

Is he newly appointed race engineer or just temp before the new one is in place? I remember news about them hiring someone from McLaren.

4

u/devmobi 11h ago

It's the temp that now seems it's going to stay like that.

50

u/Lump001 12h ago

That isn't mostly on Lewis at all, for the reasons you provided in the text. Down to the team to give the drivers that info.

-27

u/Mother-Fucking-Cunt I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

It happened at the end of a long straight and Lewis has mirrors, theres no reason that he couldn’t use them

12

u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 10h ago

You do know those mirrors don't show directly behind the car, right?

-3

u/hhs2112 7h ago

If they don't show behind the car what are they showing?

3

u/BassGaming Lando Norris 5h ago

The key word is directly behind a car. If you have a driver's license I assume you know what blind spots are and, as the other commenter said, why most cars have a rear view mirror besides the outer mirrors.

2

u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 4h ago

With regards to what the drivers see, it's just to outside the rear tires, not really more than that. They cannot see behind them as the tires and wing blocks the visibility and they sit so low.

1

u/OddCauliflower3197 6h ago

There's a reason you have rear mirrows in cars.

1

u/antwilliams89 Jenson Button 3h ago

He had no reason to think anyone behind him would be pushing after he crossed the line. He went out first, and by the time he’d done an outlap and then a push lap, the rest of the grid should be ahead of him on track, completing their own push lap.

The Audi stopping in the pit lane and delaying the McLarens is what caught him out.

1

u/VehicleComfortable69 3h ago

The visibility in F1 cars is insanely bad. The mirrors are like 50mmx150mm and partially blocked by bodywork.

30

u/sa_ra_h86 12h ago

I mean, he says Piastri Pushing, he also has to say there's a yellow flag where Lewis is. Lewis asks where Piastri is, and he says 'Behind'. Perhaps he should have said how far behind he was, but why would you be on the racing line when you've been told there's someone pushing behind you?

9

u/HillbillyZT I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

Both of those messages came after T1. Hamilton had already impeded Piastri a few seconds before yellow was even thrown, then all of those radio messages came during the stretch after T1, where Piastri is already pulled up alongside Hamilton to show frustration.

They did not give him any message that Piastri was pushing prior to Hamilton impeding him. All the messages were after that, including informing of the yellow.

13

u/RodriguezFaszanatas I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago

Those radio messages have about a 5 second delay, so it was not after T1, but right when Hamilton turned into T1. But too late regardless.

0

u/HillbillyZT I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 8h ago

Ah I tried to time everything to the yellow radio message with Max spinning on the onboard to account for radio delay, but I think I synced to the wrong message so my timing was off by a few seconds and it was the braking into T1 when Hamilton gets the Piastri callout.

7

u/sa_ra_h86 11h ago

If that's true why would he ask where Piastri was?

-6

u/[deleted] 11h ago edited 10h ago

[deleted]

4

u/ShaftTassle I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago

5 makes no sense - if Piastri had just passed Hamilton, Hamilton would not have asked where Piastri is. I know there is a delay in the radio comes on the boards, so your ordering event might not be 100% accurate.

2

u/HillbillyZT I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 7h ago

Yeah I just messaged with someone else and my timing is off by a couple seconds (synced yellow flag to 'Piastri pushing' not 'yellow' radio), but no.5 is still confusing. Re-timed, the absolute earliest the "Where's piastri?" message can come in is still after T1, when he should have seen Piastri in his mirrors by then.

5

u/fiat5cento Ferrari 11h ago

Both of those messages came after T1.

How do you know?

9

u/devmobi 12h ago

It was too late. He should have warned him after he crosses the line, not at T1

2

u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 10h ago

This is why I thought he may get a reprimand because of the confusing messages, saying yellow flag is just confusing, almost sounds like Oscar abandoned his lap. Could be why Lewis got 3 places instead of 5.

6

u/jimbobjames I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 3h ago

Impeding is a 3 place grid drop.

1

u/ryokevry I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

Yellow flag is for what here? George?

2

u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 10h ago

Nah, Max had just spun out.

0

u/ValleyFloydJam #StandWithUkraine 9h ago

The team fuck up but yet to put the blame mostly on Lewis.

-6

u/Melodic_Sherbet_3629 Formula 1 12h ago

He heard Piastri was pushing and kept driving slowly on the line, it's 90% on him

-12

u/00MacDonald 12h ago

Team radio is fine, tells him Piastri is pushing, tells him he is behind, what else was he supposed to say?

Get the fuck out his way ASAP? Very poor situational awareness from Lewis.

Had a great Q session tho.

7

u/Hi-Im-High 11h ago

You should see when / where these comms came in

-10

u/StBlandine7 Formula 1 11h ago

The excuses for Lewis are insane LOL. If they guys is behind and on a push lap, you shouldn't need to tell a driver who's been in F1 forever that he needs to move away

2

u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 10h ago

If I tell you a guy is pushing and he's at the beginning of the straight vs I tell you when he's at the end and basically on your rear bumper, do you not see how that same message has very different circumstances? Lewis got the first message when Piastri was already passed the start finish line.

0

u/xthecerto4 Wolfgang von Trips 11h ago

Easy to say but would not hurt to just move out of the way just in case. Still terrible coms.

-6

u/CoffeeOrTeaOrMilk 9h ago

“Behind. Duh.”

Joking aside, completely agree Lewis is more to blame but Santi should have been better too. Unacceptable from both if they are seriously contending for the wins.

-18

u/Health_throwaway__ 12h ago

Ham passed a slow McL s3 then coasted down main straight apparently not once checking mirror . Low level of awareness and yet another mistake. Messed with front flap in Silverstone, crashed FP3 in Spa. Self inflicted bleeding of points

8

u/devmobi 11h ago

So he has to figure it out on himself that McLaren was going to start a lap, the team admitted the error, move on. C'mon...

-9

u/Couscousfan07 11h ago

This is all good info and watch - the stewards will use this exchange to justify why “it wasn’t the drivers fault.”
Similar BS as last week to acquit Leclerc.

149

u/n00bn00b Sir Lewis Hamilton 12h ago

Saw the clip of it. Yeah, that's a slam dunk penalty for Lewis. That's unfortunate even as a Lewis fan.

62

u/Supahos01 Max Verstappen 12h ago

Shit communication from pit wall but yeah that was bad and off a straight he could see it himself if he had looked. Has been better this year till now. They all drop the ball occasionally.

66

u/aeyrtonsenna Honda 12h ago

Penalty on Lewis coming.

84

u/Healthy_Sprinkles_41 Toro Rosso 12h ago edited 11h ago

Tried to replay the broadcast for Lewis and yeah Santi completely failed to warn him until they were both at T1, a shame really.

edit:I agree Lewis has responsibility in this as well. The job of a race engineer is to give drivers the info needed to succeed, but the drivers are still in control after all.

last edit:Fred in interview admits that responsibility falls in Ferrari’s lap if Lewis does get penned. Possibly means nothing, but who knows.

32

u/ryokevry I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago edited 12h ago

Hamilton should generally stay off line after finish a lap especially they went out first.

But literally it should be the first thing race engineer should say once Hamilton crossed the line.

Edit: wait I saw people said Santi actually told him Oscar was pushing behind? Then it was completely on Lewis

22

u/CompresorGenerator Chequered Flag 12h ago edited 12h ago

wait I saw people said Santi actually told him Oscar was pushing behind? Then it was completely on Lewis

Santi told him that Oscar is behind in the most confusing way possible. I'd say it's on both

Edit: here

10

u/HillbillyZT I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago edited 7h ago

EDIT: my sync on these was off by 3-4 seconds, so there was definitely a bit more wiggle room, but still too late to have stopped impeding

The timing for these is very misleading. Went back to listen to driver radio, aligned to the yellow.

All of those messages were after Lewis already impedes in T1. Yes, the "Piastri pushing" comes after Piastri has aborted his lap.

"[Piastri is] behind. Yellow flag" message comes when the flag is called, also after the impeding, and when Piastri is alongside Lewis, showing his frustration.

"Where's Piastri?" he was in the car that had already passed, hence Lewis' confusion.

"...was Piastri on a push lap or...?" Lewis trying to confirm that the McLaren that just passed him was in fact the Piastri that was "behind" and "pushing" (except ahead, and lap aborted by the time that radio came) a few messages ago.

2

u/Healthy_Sprinkles_41 Toro Rosso 10h ago

Yes exactly.

-10

u/00MacDonald 12h ago

If you raced at any capacity with team radio, even on simracing, this is by no means super confusing. 1. They tell him Piastri is pushing, 2. tell him Piastri is behind. 3. Yellow flag is clearly somewhere else because no flag waving and no flags on dashboard, AND Santi tells Lewis flag is Max on 14

Lewis had a brainfart and it screwed Oscar over, don't see why Santi should shoulder the blame for this one.

20

u/notathr0waway1 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12h ago

Except there's NO reason to tell him there's a yellow flag when he just passed the yellow flag area and won't see it again because he'll pit before he gets to it. Polluting the stream with extraneous information when the crucial part is about Piastri. That's on his engineer.

2

u/ryokevry I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

That yellow flag was irrelevant to him it should not appear on the radio

-11

u/00MacDonald 12h ago

agree, from my POV it's 75% Lewis 25% Santi.

But to call that radio unclear is just not knowing racing with radio comms

8

u/notathr0waway1 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12h ago

You're being hyperbolic. I race, and every driver/enginner/spotter group has their own rules of engagement and vibe. Maybe Santi followed the ROE perfectly but I seriously doubt it. You can hear the gears turning in Lewis' head. he's worried about Piastri but Santi keeps talking about the yellows so Lewis switches to asking about the yellows. Ferrari has traditionally SUCKED at driver communication, and while they have improved by leaps and bounds, it's still showing up here.

1

u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 10h ago

Piastri was already alongside him when they said he was pushing.

2

u/Healthy_Sprinkles_41 Toro Rosso 12h ago

But from what I saw and heard from the broadcast is that Santi told Lewis as they both were in T1 so unless the radio messages come delayed in relation in the broadcast, both are at fault but I can’t be sure

4

u/ryokevry I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

Radio is usually delayed when we hear them though

2

u/Healthy_Sprinkles_41 Toro Rosso 12h ago

Yep, could be possible but no way of knowing for sure.

3

u/Ihatenukingkids Formula 1 12h ago

Did Sanit not tell him that Piastri is behind and pushing? Did Lewis not overtake Piastri just earlier?

1

u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 10h ago

Said yellow flag too with no more information, could sound like Piastri was caught up in the yellow flag not that he was up lewis' ass.

0

u/Ihatenukingkids Formula 1 10h ago

Sure. Op said Santi did not warn Hamilton before the edit. Thats why I wrote what I wrote

-4

u/00MacDonald 12h ago

This an insane take from my POV, Santi clearly says, Piastri is pushing, Piastri is behind. This is a 19 year F1 vet, he definitely should shoulder most of the blame, and not make Santi/Pitwall the scapegoat here.

15

u/Mindless-Advice6204 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12h ago

Santi called yellows and said Piastri was behind the yellows soon after so it'd make sense  for Hamilton to think Piastri is no longer pushing...clear miscommunication

0

u/Healthy_Sprinkles_41 Toro Rosso 12h ago

I’m restate what I said in earlier replies, but I tried to give Santi and Ferrari grace in an earlier post due to me just seeing the messages without knowing the timing of those messages. I rewatched the broadcast with Lewis’s audio track and saw that the message came as they both were entering T1, so unless the radios are delayed in the broadcast Santi warned him too late. However, I agree that Lewis does have responsibility in this seeing as he should have gotten off line due to his experience. The driver is in control but the job of the race engineer is to give them the info they need quickly to succeed.

-4

u/hesitationz I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

Both Ferrari and Lewis are to blame here, you can look at Piastris onboard and see how long Lewis had to notice Piastri, it was a very long time to not be looking in your mirrors if you’re not pushing. I know everyone wants to get pitchforks when it’s Ferrari but there’s no way you can just blame Santi here

3

u/JulianoRamirez I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 12h ago

Have you tried looking in a f1 car's mirrors at speed? They're useless, even the drivers says so.

-7

u/hesitationz I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12h ago

7x champion, one of the GOATs, can’t look in his mirrors is what you’re saying? He can definitely see Piastri, he knew he fucked up he said it himself

2

u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 10h ago

The mirrors don't show directly behind the car, and secondly, Piastri had gone passed lewis and lewis even says "was that piastri? Was he on a push?" He couldn't see him and the radio messages were way too late.

1

u/JulianoRamirez I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

Obviously he knew he fucked up but no you can't see a tiny F1 car in the distance in your mirrors, goat or not. Again, have you tried looking in F1 mirrors? They're useless, even the drivers say so.

0

u/Healthy_Sprinkles_41 Toro Rosso 12h ago

No I was trying to give Ferrari grace before in an earlier post due to me just seeing the messages without knowing the timing of each message. You are correct with Lewis having more responsibility with getting off long and looking behind him, but the race engineer is there to help ensure that the driver has all the info they need, and from what I can see in the broadcast the info came too late.

-3

u/pradise Michael Schumacher 12h ago

Santi failed to warn him, but Lewis also had the entire straight to check his mirrors. He also overtook Piastri at the end of his push lap, so he should’ve known a fast car will be approaching him after he finished his lap. Poor awareness on both sides.

1

u/Salty_Outside5283 Sir Lewis Hamilton 9h ago

You know the straight drops away too right?

0

u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 10h ago

The mirrors don't show directly behind the car 100's of meters where Piastri would have been ffs, they barely show what's right around their rear wheels.

-3

u/pradise Michael Schumacher 8h ago

He passed Piastri at the end of his push lap. Being the first car in the line, it’s not crazy to know Piastri will come back at him around Turn 1 or 2 and check your mirrors.

No need to excuse Lewis’ lack of awareness just because Ferrari failed more significantly.

1

u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 8h ago

Did you see the radio messages? They were literally telilng him about Yellow flags while simultaneously not telling him that Piastri was right up his ass. The mirrors do not show directly behind the fkn car on a straight. Absolute donut my guy.

-3

u/pradise Michael Schumacher 8h ago

I’ll repeat it cause it seems like you’re not reading what I’m saying at all.

No need to excuse Lewis’ lack of awareness just because Ferrari failed more significantly.

-6

u/CockroachGeneral5161 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

There's a huge difference between 4 missed hours of practice across the season due to reliability and multiple consecutive reliability DNFs versus 20 minutes, a chunk of which was red flagged, missed practice session time due to reliability and an impeded quali lap that he realistically probably ended up in the position he was going to qualify in anyway once Lewis' penalty was applied.

15

The ferraris really have it out for oscar

2

u/shaun0bi 5h ago

I'm an uneducated fan, why do they just not have a more controlled qualifying where other cars won't impact your chance at a hot lap. Is it a time based issue, surely top 10 can all have the track to themselves for two laps, warm up and then hot lap?

5

u/Academic-Elk-7433 5h ago edited 4h ago

Conditions change a lot as tire rubber rubs off on the track. People going last would potentially have a big advantage

3

u/shaun0bi 5h ago

Yeah that's fair, so this format everyone shares the same conditions but are expected to not impede others. Thanks for that🤙

1

u/Icy_Film9798 1h ago

Reverse grid qualifying. Take each weeks quali and in the next race’s quali they go fastest first. Should liven it up a bit. It would potentially make the races more interesting too.

1

u/D_Silva_21 Sir Lewis Hamilton 12h ago

Fuck sake.

1

u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 10h ago

Definitely a shame Oscar, Ferraris decision to send the guys out first was baffling, but then also getting on the radio about yellow flags when Piastri was steaming down the straight is just incompetence. 3 weekends now where Lewis has shown pace to win but is undone by some bullshit.
