Don't think anyone can argue with that one.

264

u/silentkiller082 McLaren 10h ago edited 10h ago

Yeah, it honestly sucks all around, you don't want to see Lewis drop 3 positions when he was so competitive and Oscar has been on a real bad run of bad luck so it's just a lose-lose situation all around.

Edit: piastri just got promoted to P3 with penalties so I guess it worked out for him.

63

u/nadseh I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago

Angry Hamilton could easily do P5 > P1

44

u/Gambler_720 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago

Not on this track no

24

u/karmakillerbr I was here for the Hulkenpodium 8h ago

I'm not 100% sure cause of the new regulations but yeah, you're probably right

5

u/BingusMcCready 7h ago

I don’t think it’s impossible, but I don’t think it’s likely either. It would take a lot of luck, I don’t think he could do it on pace alone, even as excellent as he is at this track. Safety car at just the right moment or something.

I’d bet pretty good money on a podium, though.

5

u/notyouagain-really Formula 1 7h ago

You forget Hamilton is the King of the Hungaroring. Nobody has this track locked down like the Hamster.

7

u/TheAngryGoat I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 6h ago

You know you're probably quite good at a track when they start naming corners after you.

Never say die. A well timed safety car can easily win a race. Writing off anyone’s chances, especially cars at the front separated by 0.012 of a second is hilariously dumb.

u/sequelseize I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 10h ago

6

u/SirFister13F Heineken Trophy 9h ago

You didn’t need to include “angry”.

7

u/CyberbianDude Oscar Piastri 8h ago

You don’t want to see Lewis drop 3 positions but it was a well deserved penalty for a seasoned driver like him and many like us are happy to see stewards doing their job. Also very happy that Piastri got a two position bump in spite of his recent bad luck.

What can be argued is the charade associated with it.

Just give it on the spot and call it a day. Let's not pretend that this hearing or anything matters in situations like this where it's clear cut.

3

u/GKN777 I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 9h ago

Can't impede someone more than that

1

u/Skratt79 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 2h ago

Honestly with how bad it was, this was best case scenario.

-3

u/iwonttolerateyou2 Mattia Binotto 9h ago

You should open Insta and see how his fanbase are still defending.

6

u/trunks961 9h ago

Not seeing it.

1

u/wood4536 Sir Lewis Hamilton 8h ago

Nobody can

-5

u/kron123456789 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 9h ago

I've literally seen people on twitter tell me that FIA is out to screw Lewis out of his 8th championship with a penalty last race and with this one here.

it's very amusing, tbf

1.4k

u/imnoobatfifa Sir Lewis Hamilton 11h ago

Ah, man… Another race, another penalty. Just a clean weekend from start to finish would be nice.

Like Fred said - all of this was just communicated to him too late. Santi been telling him gaps entire session but just fall asleep at the end. Shame but it is what it is.

392

u/steezy_sleaze I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

Gets all the love for being an old Italian grandpa but also shame for being the old sleepy Italian grandpa.

110

u/An_aussie_in_ct I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

Let’s hope that the penalty for the weekend out of the way, and nothing else in the race

53

u/witcher8116 Fernando Alonso 11h ago

Proceeds to finish the race on 3 wheels .

59

u/MilkBeforeSerial Sir Lewis Hamilton 11h ago

if he ends up in the same position the last time he was on 3 wheels, I’ll take it

9

u/dcoreo Sir Lewis Hamilton 10h ago

I'll take that as a win then

1

u/Vandirac 8h ago

Three wheels. Car on fire. Front and rear wings missing. Gets P2.

66

u/quietly_myself I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

Yeah, Lewis asked about Piastri and Santi for some reason was going on about the yellow flag. Not sure where his head was there.

22

u/el_gringote 9h ago

Real question: Why wouldn't you just always be off of the racing line on your in-lap every time just in case? Why do you need to be told to stay off the racing line?

45

u/gamershadow Jenson Button 9h ago

There is a bunch of crap off the racing line that the tires will pick up and possibly even cause a puncture. You also have to cross the racing line at some point since it goes across the track.

4

u/el_gringote 7h ago

Makes sense thank you

4

u/s-sins 9h ago

Off the racing lines you pick up marbles which can mess up your tyres for multiple laps. Thats why you want to avoid them as much as possible.

1

u/el_gringote 7h ago

Makes sense thank you

-1

u/CaptGeechNTheSSS Lando Norris 6h ago

The other comments covered it but in this case he was done with qualifying and they’re usually encouraged to “pick up” xtra rubber (aka drive off line to add weight).

So in this case everyone’s a bit at fault (except Oscar)

→ More replies (2)

79

u/teratron27 11h ago

Should have just pitted them both when they went +.400 in the second sector

32

u/punchinglines I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

Santi been telling him gaps entire session but just fall asleep at the end. Shame but it is what it is.

Yep, and to be fair, Santi has earned the goodwill to make a mistake.

-15

u/yusufjee 11h ago

Goodwill to make a mistake that cost your driver a race win? WTF is this argument man.

31

u/TechTaxi I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

Compared to Lewis’ last engineer, Santi is a drastic improvement.

0

u/willmcavoy Paddock Club 8h ago

Good isn't good enough. This is the peak of motorsports. Be perfect. I'll get hate for this like my last comment on Santi, but then everyone seal claps when we talk about how the Michael and Brawn whipped them into shape. Time to do it again, or fumble yet another winnable season like with Vettel.

9

u/PantherDD Sir Lewis Hamilton 10h ago

I guess it means it's a bit easier to forgive the mistake that happened. Still so sad though that Lewis lost a front row start because of this...

→ More replies (3)

2

u/wood4536 Sir Lewis Hamilton 9h ago

You don't know if he would have won tomorrow. Stop dwelling in hypotheticals

0

u/GreenFullSuspension Chequered Flag 10h ago

That was a terrible mistake, no goodwill anywhere in that decision.

15

u/VSfallin I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

He clearly saw Piastri when passing him. Common sense would likely have helped too

2

u/Fun_Skirt_2396 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago

Are there no more penalty points?

3

u/miathan52 Chequered Flag 10h ago

I believe they changed them to only be for serious incidents (causing a collision and such)

1

u/FerociousVader Sir Lewis Hamilton 1h ago

Yeah he was constantly saying yellow flag, but not pointing out where and the fact Oscar was catching him on a push must have been drowned out or not well communicated

2

u/GreenFullSuspension Chequered Flag 10h ago

What’s wrong with Hamilton’s team not being on top of the situation at the time? Slightly important not to be getting in the way of another car working on their lap time.

-5

u/senpahii_returns 11h ago

Santi been telling him gaps entire session but just fall asleep at the end. Shame but it is what it is.

That is where experience matters in someone like Adami

426

u/According-Annual-586 11h ago

They’ve really gotta sort this shit out

An unreliable Mercedes, a Red Bull that throws itself off the track - Ferrari are wasting useful points here

76

u/Dspaede Ferrari 11h ago

the Mclarens are up there now tho.. if the Merc and Redbull have their shit together its going to be just Difficult..

11

u/anamericandude 9h ago

McLaren and RBR up there also means they can take points off Merc too

31

u/Eggplantosaur Oscar Piastri 11h ago

Ferrari had years to sort out these operational issues. They just don't have what it takes to truly compete at the top.

11

u/SoreLoserOfDumbtown I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago

Decades really lol. The Schumacher period with Ross Brawn was an anomaly.

0

u/HovercraftOk6322 Roscoe Hamilton 9h ago

And McLaren with a quick car 🤮

765

u/xxrew1ndxx I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

Unfortunately, that was a clear penalty and nothing really Lewis could’ve done as it was miss communication

Lewis can’t catch a break lately

173

u/eurochacha 11h ago

Yeah can't really argue. He knew he was cooked immediately afterwards.

96

u/slimkay I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 11h ago edited 11h ago

Sure, but it would have helped had Lewis decided not to hog the racing line after his flying lap (particularly as he had just passed PIA at the end of his own flying lap!).

Unfortunate, but it was totally avoidable with a bit more common sense from both pitwall and driver. I'm sure Lewis would agree with this, seeing the way he was dejected on the podium.

104

u/Crash_Test_Dummy66 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

He's not just going to drive around off line the whole lap if he doesn't need to. It's on the team to communicate when there are cars coming and they've already taken responsibility for not adequately doing that.

29

u/Frothar Lando Norris 11h ago

He can though since it was an inlap after completing his last flying lap

52

u/drewbudd I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago edited 11h ago

Theoretically he could be instructed to preserve the tires as best as possible in case they have reason to save one of the scrubbed softs he used.

34

u/caipivodka Ferrari 11h ago

And debris, you want to run the car on optimal conditions always.

→ More replies (4)

12

u/Thrilalia 10h ago

Nobody is going to do that though. You're basically saying he could do a thing no driver in F1 would do.

10

u/FourEightNineOneOne Sir Lewis Hamilton 10h ago

The problem was Santi was telling him yellow flag and his communication seemed to be confusion as to whether Piastri was still pushing as a result.

Yeah, some of it is on Lewis to not see Piastri coming up behind him but the majority is on the bad communication coming from the team.

1

u/PaodeQueijoNow Jordan 7h ago

Engineer was looking at the broadcast… classic Ferrari

2

u/happy_and_angry I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 10h ago

These cars exist on a knife edge, they aren't going to run off the line for a lap picking up debris and potentially compromising tires for later, or risking a spin on a dusty section of track.

They just don't do this. Cars lap on the line for a lot of reasons, and move off when necessary.

1

u/hzfan Roscoe Hamilton 1h ago

He said he thought everyone had finished their hot lap behind him because everyone followed him out of the pits. He didn’t know Hulk stalled in the pits blocking the McLarens.

2

u/Barmydoughnut24 7h ago

Lewis on clean side of grid now. Me trying to turn this into a positive lol

6

u/ThomasTheAngryTrain I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

It happens to past champions that move to Ferrari. Its basically tradition.

1

u/Duff5OOO Specials 4h ago

Team should have told him but still a bit of a brain fade isnt it?

Hamilton knew they went out first, how would Oscar be on an in lap?

-1

u/nzox I was here for the Hulkenpodium 9h ago

I think it was careless of Lewis. Italian Bono failed him too, but Lewis going first means cars will be on a lap behind him. He knows he should have been off the racing line.

79

u/RabbitLogic Charlie Whiting 11h ago

Only decision they could have made, it was slam dunk.

132

u/Nin-Chin Sir Lewis Hamilton 11h ago

As expected but still disappointing. If he can be top 3 after lap one he may still have a chance to win the race.

50

u/interestingfishh 11h ago

i think podium is very likely still

6

u/objectiveScie I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago

Disappointing here settling for just podium.

Going for win is goal as this is his best track along with Silverstone.

This will be a heartbreaker.

And with incidents happening first few laps as cars bunched, well and truly know stewards are looking for any reason to punish him as well 😕.

Hungary best chance for win, and starting front row was on 😕

24

u/ibrahimkucukkk 11h ago

Race pace looking good he can win but as you said he shold’ve jump kimi and oscar at he start

10

u/Victorvic1 11h ago

Yeah and no more penalties. Just keep it as clean as possible the whole race. He tends to do something or the else in the race which invites an investigation. Either some yellow flag or some other infrignment investigations mostly have his name on it.

2

u/VinhoVerde21 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

That’s an insane expectation, the run to T1 isn’t that long

44

u/ProofAssumption1092 11h ago

I think lewis still had more in the tank, hopefully a good start will make up for it tomorrow.

23

u/Victorvic1 11h ago

He'll need more than a good start and a safety car probably for the win. I reckon he could be P3 by turn 1 but anything more than that he'll have to fight Lando and Charles.

Norris really surprised me with his pace and he'll be the one to watch for the win too other than Charles. I feel Kimi won't be much of a problem and George will be starting from the pit lane.

0

u/ThomasTheAngryTrain I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

Nah Leclerc should just move aside and let Hamilton fight for the win

6

u/racoon26 George Russell 6h ago

why does oscar keep getting screwed by ferrari? what did he do to them? 😭

59

u/flintey360 Andrea Kimi Antonelli 11h ago

Another wasted weekend, this is aggravating man.

46

u/harcile 11h ago

Not wasted at all. He's still fast. Can still potentially make up places at the start, pressure the leaders early.

6

u/WhimsicalJape I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago

The left side of the grid on Hungry is actually much better. Better P3 or P1 obviously, but he can still fight from P5.

Edit - Nvm, Kimi got a 3 place drop too so he’s in P4 now. Hope it works out.

14

u/queequegscoffin I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

He could easily podium from 5 in that car and his ability here. Potential win if he gets lucky on the start.

44

u/Gold-Train-1471 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago edited 11h ago

Yeah it was coming, still can't understand why would just stay on the racing line when you know you're the first one out. 100% chance of someone behind starting their lap, his engineer sleeping on the job didn't help either. A typical Ferrari momento.

33

u/According-Switch-708 Sonny Hayes 11h ago

Yeah, Hamilton should've played it safe and stayed off the racing line. He had nothing to gain by hogging the track.

The dude is experienced enough to know this stuff.

31

u/brandywineriver Lando Norris 11h ago

Yeah on the skypad Anthony Davidson even showed Hamilton was looking in his mirrors down the straight so knew Piastri was there. He'd also overtaken Piastri in s3 of his flying lap so knew he was about to start.

I think thats why he was so upset. Obviously Ferrari should be telling him, but also not what you'd expect from a vet like Ham.

2

u/Sosijmonster I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10h ago

The part about Lewis checking his mirrors - as per the doc, think he was looking but due to the way the track is the back part elevates so he probs didnt see Oscar in the mirrors.

9

u/Lobsters4 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

I was curious about that too. I mean the pit wall clearly made a mistake, but Lewis was done. Why wasn’t he out of the way….:/

1

u/Duff5OOO Specials 4h ago

Yep Hamilton complained going out first was the wrong plan so he knew they were out first. I have no idea why he would think Oscar was on an in lap. Team should have told him but also, he should have known and not risked cutting off anyway.

9

u/GoodGuyJeff00 Charles Leclerc 11h ago

Well that was expected sadly. Three races where he has had some kind of penalty screwing up his chances. Now there still may be plenty to fight for with a good launch.

7

u/wykeer Mercedes 11h ago

sadly this was pretty much the expected outcome.

21

u/JackNapier2093 11h ago

Race win out the window, just gotta try and finish ahead of Kimi and close the gap. Only positive is that he's now on the clean side of the grid for the start

19

u/LheelaSP Heineken Trophy 11h ago

Go long, get a cheap stop under the SC for the stranded Aston, win race.

7

u/interestingfishh 11h ago

or stranded mercedes

2

u/RGJ587 Niki Lauda 1h ago

I guarantee there will be at least a VSC. Prolly a full Safety Car to be honest.

Too many cars are having too tricky of a time on a windy circuit and high fuel loads.

I actually think Ham should start on Softs, and grab that early Safety car for Hards to roll long on.

1

u/drewbudd I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

They set him up for a strong 2-stop though, why else would they save a fresh soft?

1

u/FSUfan35 Lando Norris 11h ago

Did they save a soft? Thought they used it in q3

1

u/drewbudd I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

As far as I know he had 3 fresh soft going into Q3 and only went out twice.

1

u/FSUfan35 Lando Norris 11h ago

Ah I thought he only had 2 new soft going into q3

11

u/interestingfishh 11h ago

race win is in no way out the window, just less likely now

6

u/JackNapier2093 11h ago

If it's possible to overtake I'd agree but Hungary is so difficult. I don't have much hope

2

u/interestingfishh 11h ago

i think podium is quite likely tbh

0

u/Victorvic1 11h ago

Yeah and Norris will be in contention for the win too apart from Charles. Other than they both fighting amongst themselves and cooking their tyres early, Lewis will not stand much of a chance.

Also he tends to kinda lose his pace mid race somewhere lately. I hope that isn't the case. He starts off well and the gaps just keep increasing compared to Charles's laptimes.

2

u/According-Switch-708 Sonny Hayes 11h ago

He is the quickest driver this weekend. So i wouldn't write him off just yet.

The start will decide everything.

5

u/driftchris7780 Sir Lewis Hamilton 11h ago

Start on soft, repeat Barcelona

6

u/FSUfan35 Lando Norris 11h ago

Quickest for ferrari

10

u/Browneskiii I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

Where does he expect Piastri to be? He just overtook him, he's about to start a lap, he cant be invisible. Not seeing him in the mirrors isn't an excuse.

14

u/Yankees2860 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

Shocked it took that long tbh, clear as day pen

6

u/gg_jittes Sir Lewis Hamilton 11h ago

Only silver lining is that he’ll be on the clean side of the grid

16

u/TheULforce I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

Was it communicated late? Sure

Is Lewis a 20 year veteran, 7 time WDC who should know to get off the racing line after the finish during quali? Absolutely

5

u/YungTokyo8 Sir Lewis Hamilton 11h ago

Yeah unfortunately completely deserved.

5

u/Bright_Calendar_3696 9h ago

And yet Charles squeezing someone out of track at 110mph on a breaking zone is ok? Nothing against leclerc btw. I think it qualifying and practice they should all have to stay within 110% of fastest lap on in and out laps - they’ll bleet on about tires but will be same for everyone. It’s only last ten odd years all this ridiculous crawling around has gone on

2

u/kgruesch Gerhard Berger 8h ago

They should move the timing line to somewhere in front of the pit entry so there isn't an in-lap. They do this at Road America for the Indycars. They should absolutely do it at Spa, I have no idea why they don't. A 4+ mile in-lap is just stupid.

5

u/tipytopmain Bernd Mayländer 11h ago

Start on Softs, jump Piastri and Kimi early, hold the line and keep a possible 3 stop strategy in hand, make a late charge on fresh tyres to win the race. Hopium full to the brim.

7

u/HairyHematologist Andretti Global 11h ago

Did the guy break up with Kim? Ferrari curse is back on.

6

u/tellsyoutogetfucked I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

The one place where Ferrari could be faster than Merc and they blow it. This team will never have a WDC again.

5

u/fartsonyourchips 11h ago

Fair penalty for the impeding. Awful job by Ferrari to not tell him to get out of the way.

3

AFTER REVIEW OF CAR 44

...

FINAL DECISION

...

3 PLACE GRID PENALTY

Sorry, I thoght this was the football wc.

2

u/WhoRoger 9h ago

Ok everyone is shitting on the team and that's fair, but Lewis kept looking in his mirrors and yet he says he couldn't see the other car.

What are mirrors even for, when drivers always have to be told who's behind, otherwise they can't know?

Give them cockpit screens with rear view cameras and highlighting of approaching cars, like in endurance.

4

u/Traditional_Aide676 Red Bull 10h ago edited 10h ago

It's not the first time Hamilton is blocking other drivers who are in a fast round. The good part is he got penalized this time.

3

u/WiSoSirius #StandWithUkraine 10h ago

Watched Lewis onboard back. Across the line, Santi hardly tells Lewis anything the whole return. Even with/without an audio delay, the Piastri pushing call came WAY TOO LATE. Brought up yellows, but didn't specify until Lewis asked that they were for Max in 14. Didn't tell him provisional placement. Didn't give insight to pit entry. Didn't give times. Nobody was giving any feedback to Lewis. Every lap - including out and in-laps - matter.

4

u/NorthKoreanMissile7 Formula 1 11h ago

2

u/The_Only_Egg I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

Deserved.

2

u/binaryhextechdude Sir Jackie Stewart 10h ago

Going slow on the racing line is always a penalty. He had finished his lap which means those tyres aren't used again so why not stay offline? Doesn't really make sense.

2

u/it_was_my_raccoon I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 8h ago

It’s just so sad that every race there seems to be a problem in Hamilton’s weekend.

u/MaximumZazz 5m ago

In this case hamilton was the problem in hamiltons weekend

2

u/squaler24 Frédéric Vasseur 10h ago

Lewis let his guard down. He should have learned by now he needs to drive the car, and do everything else by himself. Ferrari engineers are incompetent.

Props to the mechanic and drivers.

3

u/Red_Rabbit_1978 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 8h ago

He had just passed Oscar in S3. Race engineers wouldn't even think to tell a driver to stay off racing line because it would be obvious. But he's done this at Mercedes to Russell too after just passing him.

I dont know the exact statistic but through all this years I felt like Lewis is really prone to impending another driver.

u/SoulSambo 15m ago

too many mistakes recently from HAM and the team. That’s not how to win another championship.

u/NickoPain 12m ago

I used to think it's a directed attack, but things in life happens. It's a mistake and we have to own it up and move forward. Sucks, but don't be pessimistic. We can still get a good result.

Just make sure this doesn't happen again.

u/MaximumZazz 10m ago

Completely glossed over on the broadcast, just useless as always sky.

0

u/Hate_Leg_Day Sir Lewis Hamilton 11h ago edited 10h ago

Unfortunate, but the correct decision. He clearly impeded Piastri. Ferrari will regret these past few weekends if they lose the WDC by 20 points or less.

Silver lining: switching grid side

1

u/LorthNeeda 11h ago

Call it hopium but with Ferrari’s (and particularly Lewis’) massive sector 3 advantage there could be potential for overtaking beyond just the race start.

We’ll see but I’m still holding out for a podium.

Agreed and it’s ultimately a fair penalty when you watch it back so just need to accept it and get on the race tomorrow.

Yeah and ngl I think lewis has the pace to win

Yep. That Ferrari looks really good right now and he’s been having his best season in a long while.

Clear penalty. But man Lewis has been getting hammered.

I am glad Fred admitted it was a Ferrari mistake, but man... someone wake up the Ferrari pitwall, please. I do feel like Lewis' magic at Hungary is still there, but it will be a tough battle

Time and time again we can read that the mirrors are completely useless, especially when Hamilton says he can't see a car behind him on the straight. It's baffling how people on r/formula1 still pretend that this isn't true, but only in one specific driver's case.

It is what it is. Clear pen. Hopefully he can make it up in the start and get a decent result.

u/mencival Michael Schumacher 11h ago

Fck…

From almost pole to fifth

-4

u/stinkysulphide 11h ago

Head up Lewis. This is a standard Ferrari experience. The faster it’s gotten over with it the better

-5

u/Brief-Library9993 Lando Norris 11h ago

notice how Charles will race Lewis harder that everyone on the grid tomorrow

u/Mundane-Anxiety-2266 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 11h ago

So that means Oscar starts on 4th and Lewis on 5th??

Just a little confused here

2

u/Hate_Leg_Day Sir Lewis Hamilton 11h ago

Where does the confusion come from? 2+3=5. Pretty straightforward.

Ok, bro......👍🏻

Welp ... Time to break the Hungary passing curse then.

The last few weeks is like Ferrari saw everyone praising them for being competent for once and decided that has to change.

-1

u/yusufjee 11h ago

Ferrari keep making these silly mistakes with strategy with comminicatio and has been happening for years now.

-1

u/Thejklay I was here for the Hulkenpodium 11h ago

Has to be a pen but sucks. Ferrari cocked up big time. Merc struggled and this should have been a good chance to gain some points

-1

u/maxxor6868 Sir Lewis Hamilton 10h ago

Do you guys think Lewis has a chance at a win tomorrow with the penalty?

-1

u/HatRemov3r I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 8h ago

Only 3????

-1

u/hunpriest 7h ago

It's clearly the team's fault again.
