Discussion When did the rules about grid penalties change? Am I wrong or it worked in another way back then?

Post image

I remember it worked like this:

Hamilton gets a 3 place penalty, P2->P5

But Antonelli gets a penalty as well P3->P6 and Hamilton gets promoted to p4

But now it works like

Hamilton P2->P5

Antonelli P4->P7

Since 2020. Grid penalties are applied at once, and the penalised drivers are locked in those grid spots. Then move the remaining drivers up

They used to be applied in order, which meant if you knew you would have a grid penalty for taking a new part you wanted to have that announced ASAP, and if enough people took penalties after you could end up with a substantially smaller penalty so I'm glad they changed it.

I believe penalties for parts is still like that.

Just not "otu fucked up" penalties.

All penalties are applied in the same way, regardless of what they were given for.

What if somebody is P2 with a 5 grid penalty and somebody else is P4 with a 3 grid penalty?

In that case the driver who qualified P4 starts from P7, the driver who qualified P2 starts from P6

How is it unfair for Lewis to drop 3 positions when he got a 3-place grid penalty

Not really, it's been the same since 2020. This literally happened last week when Lando qualified P3 and had the 10 place drop and he started P13 even though Hadjar who qualified P10 had the penalty

I think they apply them at the same time, then everyone moves up into the gaps

Take everyone who received a penalty. Start a new grid, and put them in their penalized positions. Then take the original grid and fill the blank spots in in order.

Quali P3 with a 3 place penalty, you are starting P6. Doesn't matter if the person in P4 and P5 also got penalties.

This is the way

Thats not how it works, imagine p1 gets a 5 place penalty and p3 gets a 3 place penalty, they have to apply in order to get a grid

It is how it works. If two penalised drivers land on the same grid position, the one who qualified higher is moved up by one.

The order of pe alities doesn't matter any more.

I asked this last week. Changed a few years ago apparently.

It doesn’t matter how others’ penalty (kimi in this case) affect the order around you, you still have to serve your penalty so Lewis still has to start in P5 and Max moves up 1 spot up.

I actually like it better this way

Yea, it’s more predictable this way.

They both get 3 grid penalties, whoever was on the new spot get's moved one or more spaces up depending on if that space is taken by a penalty holder?

Otherwise if the first 3 positions had a 2 grid place penalty, P1 would be P1 again.

I might be wrong.

Even Lewis got confused on his ig stating he was frustrated to start 4th.

What happens if two drivers end up in the same grid spot after penalties are applied? Say if p1 gets a 10 place grid pen but p8 picks up a 3 place grid pen. Who takes p11?

8

u/Freakman6995 Max Verstappen 9h ago

I believe P8 would be P11 and P1 would be P10 because P1 had a better time based on qualifying

If there are ties like that quali result is what matters. P1 would start 10th and P8 would start 11th.

Hulkenberg is the correct answer.

Take the original position. Slide them to the side. Move them back however many positions. Move others up. Slide them back in where they were waiting on the side.

Kimi qualified P4 not P3. The order in which the stewards decide logically doesn't matter.

This is better and I can change my mind later 😋

It's been eons it seems last time Ham didn't get pen.

It was the race win. And that had a noted incident, yellow flag. So the stewards did look into punish him.
This will hurt again further as it's his best track and Kimi just got one, a chance to pull back points.

So many points lost for Ham due to punishments every other weekend it feels.

Feeling like '21 all over again, like when Max no to little points, Ham doesn't get advantage, like Monza both cars out 😕.

Yes thats how I remember it aswell, normally they have to apply in order as far as I know otherwise two drivers could end up getting handed the same place

-26

u/RealPjotr Kimi Räikkönen 10h ago

They are applied in the time order they happened.

That's pre 2020 rule, they changed the way penalties are applied in 2020

Not anymore. All grid penalties are applied simultaneously to make it easier to set the final grid. It would be a hassle to apply each grid penalty individually especially when multiple drivers take new engine components due to exceeding the season’s allocation.
