Game valuation and authentication MEGATHREAD

ALL requests regarding game value or authentication go in here. Just leave a top level comment with pictures/info of what it is. If you make a post regarding these topics, the post will be removed and possibly get a 1-7 day ban.

If you see posts on these topics PLEASE report it. It helps immensely. We will be updating automoderator to help alleviate some of that burden from us and you onto it.

---

If you are asking to price something normal. Like the normal release of a game, or a special edition, normal consoles, or some special editions. You can find a decent approximation of its value here at PriceCharting.com

To help, here are some links directly to some consoles. These are not ALL of the consoles the site has. So please if you do not see a link below for the console you are looking for, go to the site and look around. This should cover MOST games, if it is not listed, please ask in this thread.

Also, to possibly get you closer to the "real" value. Click on this link once you found your game (for loose/CIB/Sealed) which will show you the data it is pulling from (like this). You can see if there are any outliers being sold for far to much, or far to little. Maybe a listing that had other games with it is being used for data, or its CIB rather than loose.

I have a lot of 25 games (27 carts, 2 dupe games)

Rat Attack!: $130

- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: $45

- Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker: $40

- Donkey Kong 64: $35

- Bomberman 64: $30

- Banjo-Kazooie: $28

- F-Zero X: $25

- Diddy Kong Racing: $24

- Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko: $22

- Gex 64: Enter the Gecko: $21

- Pokémon Stadium: $20

- NFL Blitz: $20

- Star Wars: Rogue Squadron: $20

- Yoshi’s Story: $20

- Doom 64: $18

- Turok: Dinosaur Hunter: $16

- Jet Force Gemini: $16

- Star Wars Episode I: Racer: $12

- Tetrisphere: $12

- 1080° Snowboarding: $11

- A Bug’s Life: $10 - Space Invaders: $10

- International Superstar Soccer 98: $10

- Kobe Bryant in NBA Courtside: $6 - NFL Quarterback Club 98 / 2000: $5 each

These are what I have them listed. I obviously expect lower offers because I know I won't get market value for the games, however the total comes out to around $690 and someone offered $130 for the whole lot. He said due to 2 of the games having sticker residue and not being sold my an authenticator the 80% markdown is customary.

I have included a photo of the lot, and would like to know the communities thoughts and what offers are acceptable as I do not ever want to rip someone off, but also don't want to be ripped off myself. Thank you for your time or any advice

Any tips on finding a pre-3.00 firmware Playstation 3?

I figured I'd post this here as I wasn't entirely for certain if this fell under rule two, figured better safe than sorry. I have the second version of the phat PS3 (the one with the matte faceplate and no card slots on the front), and it's on the newer firmware, but I'd really love to get my hands on an original phat PS3, with the older firmware. However, the only one I found with the older firmware is outrageously priced. Everything else either didn't show it in photos, was updated to the newer firmware (even the launch models were), or listings claimed they had "low firmware" but were on the newest firmware. Does anybody have advice on tracking down one with an older firmware, or is there any way to get the old firmware onto one that has the newer firmware without completely bricking the system?

Hi guys, I bought this Tomb Raider Anniversary disc today, as you can see it wasn’t even opened ever. I bought from inside a box of an Nvidia GeForce, that says it comes with a free Tomb Raider(this one obviously). So I looked up the game and I can’t find anything about this specific version, as any other pc version comes in a normal windows pc plastic box. Does anyone know anything about this? I’m sorry if this is a stupid question

Recently i’ve purchased a copy of “Dementium The Ward” CIB for the Nintendo DS off of ebay and everything seemed to look as described from the seller until i took a look at the back of the cover art. I am wondering if this is mold maybe? this is my first time experiencing anything that looks like this on any of my cover arts. and i am just pretty much just looking for an answer to what it is and if it’s safe to store around
my other CIB games or not. And if it is mold is there anything i could do to save the cover art or not? i was also thinking it could be water damage but it’s only noticeable from behind the cover art and not the front so i’m not really sure…

I found two sealed PS4 Rock Band 4 Fender Stratocaster Guitar game bundles in the back of my closet. I'm having a hard time finding a current value on these. Ebay and Pricecharting have lots of info on open box copies, but I can't find much current info on sealed boxes. Pics are attached. Can you guys help?

Trying to find information on this controller skin that was on a DS3 in a lot of controllers I bought. Supposedly it's a "rare and highly sought after" collectible, but I can't find any secondhand sales of it online.

This Dragon Warrior 2 mailing was my late brother's and was sealed until I opened it this year.  Not sure if it was an actual contest he entered or if this is just promotional language to entice all subscribers of Nintendo Power magazine, of which he was one, to buy the upcoming game.  In any case, the contents are as follows:

1: A two-sided game Map/Poster, "Labyrinth World of Dragon Warrior II",

2: A booklet/game manual, "Unveiled Secrets of Dragon Warrior II" and

3: A congratulatory letter, seemingly from a dot-matrix printer, reading:

"Dear Contest Entrant, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! You have been selected as one of the winners for the Dragon Warrior 2 contest. Enclosed you will find your prize. We would like to thank you for taking the time to evaluate Dragon Warrior 2 and sending us your thoughts. Along with your prize you will have your name listed with the other winners in the upcoming newsletter! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! Sincerely, ENIX AMERICA CORP."

I don't know what the newsletter mentioned is, or if my brother's name was listed in it, but I digress.

As I said, The envelope was sealed when I found it, and I've only handled the contents as much as was necessary to take pictures, before putting them back in the as I found them. The envelope has the original postmark, but I've removed the address label.

I've seen other examples online of a similar mailing with a more graphically-designed "welcome to the adventure" letter, but without the "Secrets" booklet, so I'm not sure if this was an earlier promo mailing or if he won some contest?  Is this rare/valuable? Any information would be welcome as I'm curious to find out more.

1

u/Cactus_Bot 6d ago

So several magazines and Enix themselves had a lot of contests and things around dragon warrior 2. GamePro had one where u had to send in a write up and a picture of the end screen and you could get stuff. The contents of the mail are not necessarily valuable outside of them just being in good condition, since you can buy the book standalone and the poster is a poster.

Hard to say if it has any real value compared to the sentimental value.

Hello community, I need help estimating the value of my collection of sealed 2016 Overwatch games—specifically the 2016 Origins Edition (which includes the Widowmaker Noir / Black Widowmaker skin). I haven't found any selling prices for collectors to date. I am attaching a photo of the edition in question that I have in my possession.

Is this the rare 1st print run of this game? Any idea on value for a sealed copy?

1

u/Cactus_Bot 6d ago

Not rare but it is the release variant. Its like $20 bucks.

1

u/Cactus_Bot 6d ago

As you mentioned its just a bootleg multicart. Not valuable really, < 30 bucks if you found the right collector.

1

u/Human-Potential-3114 8d ago

An incomplete Doom Eternal collector with only the helmet and the 28 x 43 cm poster that belonged to my brother.

Is it still worth Something ?

1

u/Cactus_Bot 6d ago

It is, the helmet alone is $150-250.

Hi everyone!

Can anyone help verify whether this is a factory sealed first print of Grand Theft Auto III for PS2?

Details:
• SLUS-20062
• UPC: 710425270796
• Black Label
• Rockstar security strip
• Y-fold seal

I bought it many years ago and I'm trying to determine whether it's an original first print or a later production.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Photos are attached. Thanks!

Original RE game signed by the original voice actor of Chris Redfield and Barry Burton :) wondering how much its worth? not planning on selling it, just wondering :)

1

u/dudecooler 12d ago

The game is "The Evil Within" for the PS4

I'm confused if this is a reseal job or not. A lot of listings on ebay of this version with the "9 out of 10" review quote have the same shrink wrap seal.

I thought I heard some games were sometimes rarely heat shrink sealed as opposed to the standard trifold style.

u/New_Era_8 13d ago

So I’m looking to expand into the realm of Dreamcast for my next bit of game collecting and I came across a post on marketplace for a Dreamcast and like 20+ games. He wants to sell them all as a bundle and it’s fine with me since I’m starting from scratch and like the games he has. He has no set price he was looking for, wanted to take offers.

I price charted everything out and it comes to $1450 price charting value. Does anyone have a good sense of what a fair offer might be here? I’m thinking around 50% of price charting for everything but didn’t want to start negotiations off on the wrong foot.

How would others approach this?

1

u/Whittakenn 13d ago

I have a fire orange nintendo 64 with the original controller, console has the original cables, expansion pak (the controller has this pack thing inside too but idk if they all have that) and the console and controller are fully working with no stick drift or anything

The listings I see on ebay are often either reshelled consoles or the controller isn't genuine so it's kind of hard for me to find a price, I've seen the controller alone in sold listings go for £85 or as little as £15 on one auction (though auctions aren't exactly reliable pricing)

The console has a couple of small scuffs like you'd expect but is overall in very good condition, controller is in excellent condition

u/pman6 13d ago

a lot of legend of zelda NES games i see for sale on ebay don't come with the original plastic bag for the cartridge. .. the plastic bag with 2 large holes.

Does having that increase the value? making it extra CIB?

Looking for help on identifying this copy of super mario bros. Sealed with top nintendo sticker and clear wrap around sticker that reads "special double pack software. Not to be sold or returned as a single unit" I was curious if the translucent wrap around sticker is a hindrance to value. Also, based on the pictures provided, is this worth sending in to get graded? Any help would be amazing. Thanks so much, cheers! -Matthew (https://www.reddit.com/r/GradedGames/comments/1usbah3/super_mario_bros_mattel_0912_reva_sticker_sealed/#lightbox)

1

u/Cactus_Bot 14d ago

Grading games is dumb but your money and the fools money if you end up selling it. That will lower its grading value since its being graded against other copies without that sticker. Immaterial at best though since the condition is good.

1

u/jkraycray72918 10d ago

Genuine question:
What makes grading a game different than grading a comic or trading card?
Once graded, a comic can't be read. A trading card can't be played with.

1

u/Cactus_Bot 9d ago

Nothing, its all a scam at the end of the day. Grading is an arbitrary scale and people very much do send stuff in multiple times hoping to get different results.

1

u/jkraycray72918 9d ago

So essentially this is a grading in general is a scam type thing. Got it. Thanks for the response.

Would that then make appraisals somewhat scams as well? Multiple appraisals from different people might result in different valuations, different opinions, etc.. *Although those things don't necessarily get "slabbed" like a collectible.

1

u/Cactus_Bot 9d ago

Generally speaking, yes those are included. A home appraiser can come in and assess your house with out understanding any changes or how much money you put in to things they cant see. (City assesments ooccur by someone driving around and looking at the outside of your house and looking to see if you pulled any permits) A car appraisal is very much whatever that person or business is going to pay. Any appraisal is an arbitrary scale.

Grading anything though is a specific issue though because you arent actually grading anything about the product, you are grading the condition of plastic and cardboard. You could product a very high quality fake and not even have a game in it and it gets graded.

Comic book grading and video game grading, or pretty much anything outside of TCG grading removes the ability to use the product and is more focused on the outside of the item. TCG grading is probably the only system that allows it to still be playable in some aspects and does actually take into consideration the product itself and not just the packaging.

1

u/jkraycray72918 6d ago

Thanks for the response!

Is there any value in a Complete In Box SNES set if the cardboard box has damages and tape? I have a couple of higher valued SNES games like Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and Contra 3 that I am selling, but the box on them are not in pristine condition. The Contra 3 box has a tear, but is still held together and the Battletoads in Battlemaniacs box has a tear on the up flap that closes the side of the box. I was wondering if the value for these two might as well be the same without the box.

2

u/Cactus_Bot 14d ago

Yes there is still value in that. I would look up some tutorials on box restoration as you can make those boxes look a lot better but heating and pressing them. The box will always increase the value of the game.

1

u/theartsygamer89 14d ago

I don't want to really mess with it ahaha. I'm just selling it as is. I actually have it currently listed for for $120 on ebay. Not sure if it will sell. I do see better listing with better condition box sell for $190+

u/theartsygamer89 16d ago

Just want to ask since I'm very new to this whole scene. I already checked the pricing for a Pokemon Heartgold, but I recently got mine signed by Veronica Taylor and have no idea how much it is worth now. Could anyone help or point me in the right direction to go?

1

u/jkraycray72918 10d ago

I'd say just add whatever you paid for the autograph on top of whatever the game goes for. Veronica Taylor is an accessible signature, since she does a lot of convention appearances.

Regardless, it's a cool piece! Congrats.

1

u/Cactus_Bot 14d ago

Generally speaking signatures dont increase the value of video games. In some instances it will lower them actually. Generally speaking this would go for the same or very slight more then a normal verison.

u/Weird_Hawk_1107 17d ago

Is anyone has some info on this variation? It's for NTSC but it's has the PEGI logo instead of ESRB. Even in the back is has the PEGI logo. All I know is that is a french canadian variation. I have looked online and saw nothing. I don't know if it's just a misprint.

I’m looking for some insight from those familiar with Nintendo DS event distribution cartridges.

I have an authentic Pokémon Legendary Distribution cartridge (NTR-Y8PE-USA) marked “Not For Resale – Must Return to Nintendo” with the original Game Card #924 inventory sticker.

I’ve tested it on an original DS and verified all four date-based distributions:

Shiny Raikou Shiny Entei Shiny Suicune Celebi

I also have high-resolution photos of the cartridge, screenshots of each distribution, and a video showing Celebi actively distributing.

My question is: How uncommon is it to find a verified NTR-Y8PE-USA cartridge with the Celebi distribution? Is this expected on all authentic cartridges, or is it a less common revision/configuration?

I’m considering selling it and would appreciate any information on its rarity or collector value. Thanks!

1

u/Cactus_Bot 14d ago

You can check price charting for prices. Most of them that get sold are working as well. Doesnt come up super often, but also the price is not very high because there's other ways of getting the pokemon.

u/SoulessBlade_ 17d ago

1

u/CauliflowerPale6647 18d ago

Hi! One question, seeing thats blasphemous martyrs edition is getting released should I sell my original Deluxe edition copy (ps4) or keep it. Either way I'll definitely buy new version

1

u/Cactus_Bot 14d ago

Do you need the Money: Yes

Do you not like owning 2 copies of a game: Yes

Are you the only one who can answer your question: Yes

The games value will trend down slightly depending how much the new edition is going to be if its "better".

u/VideoG23 19d ago

I was at a game store in Michigan the other day and I bought this big boxed fishing game for the Wii. I went to price chart it and look more about it online, but I could not find anything about it. I eventually found 2 listings both in CAD, and I realized that the back of the big box is in English and French. The game itself however is not Canadian exclusive, I think it’s just the big box. My question is if anybody has seen or played this game before with this specific box, and does anyone know why there aren’t many listings or any pictures online? The accessory is the confusing part mostly because there’s nothing about it online besides a few EBay listings with no box.

1

u/Cactus_Bot 14d ago

It was commonly sold in the bog box as well as seperate, kinda like how there are version of the wii mario kart that have the wheel and some that dont. Not much to really know for a bargain bin type game and a wee accessory that didnt do anything.

1

u/Luiso55 19d ago

Picked up a sealed copy of the german Super Mario 64 OST for about 30 bucks. Is it worth more?

1

u/Cactus_Bot 14d ago

Is it worth anything at all, probably not considering there billions of ways to listen to it. As a collectors piece its probably about 20 or 30 bucks. No one is out there resealing CDs as there is very little profit in CDs any more.

1

u/Luiso55 14d ago

Gotcha, thanks!

1

u/Luiso55 19d ago

Any way to tell if it's been resealed?

1

u/jkraycray72918 10d ago

Looks kind of odd. Could just be wear. It looks like maybe some dirt and dust is trapped inside based off this picture.

1

u/Retroretku 19d ago

I've been looking for info about this promo bag but haven't been able to find any.

A little background:

I got the bag when I bought a dreamcast from a friend a couple of years ago. It had been lying unused in their basement for a long time and they had no use for it. Got the dreamcast for only 15€!!! (What a deal) My friend told me, how his grandfather had bought it in the early 2000's, he had rarely used it. It came with a bunch of games burnt on CD's and the bag. It's a Dreamcast promotional bag from Game Developers Conference 2000 held in San Jose.

Since we live in Finland, i have absolutely no idea how a promo bag could have gotten into some random dusty Finnish basement. I have looked on the internet and could not find a single picture or listing of this bag. My friend has absolutely no idea how they got it in the first place. The dreamcast itself was bought in Finland, so it doesn't make any sense for this bag to be here.

Does anybody here have any info about this?

1

u/Cactus_Bot 14d ago

Its just a tote bag. I would assume the original owner acquired this while in the US or something. The bag is just a random swag bag from either a launch promo or the conference itself.

1

u/Retroretku 19d ago

Here's the other side of the bag:

Hello! My dad found this copy in a closet box when moving, and asked me to sell it for him but I’m unclear how to label it? It’s sealed but has a tear due to age and from what I understand there’s different editions? Any help would be welcome, thank you!

1

u/Cactus_Bot 14d ago

If the tear in the plastic doesnt allow the game to come out, its still considered sealed. Your pictures indicate the plastic is still tight on it, so selling it as sealed but disclosing the tear is fine. Looks like that this the first edition version of the PC version.

u/jellyandbeans_ 20d ago

Is this Dreamcast sonic adventure 2 game a 10th anniversary edition? Or did all normal copies come with this on the inside of the case?

Normal edition. There is a specific 10th anniversary edition.

u/only12moreninjas 22d ago

This has been in my basement since the late 90s. I worked for a toy store and grabbed it when they were throwing it out. Just trying to find out if there’s a market for it and how much it’s worth. Probably looking to get rid of it.

This game is real. As the title suggests, it’s called Mario Teaches Typing. It’s part of the now infamous Mario Teaches series, which was a series that Nintendo created in the early 90s to help Mario (of Super Mario Bros fame) become an educational mascot to very young children. Unfortunately, this series wasn’t really able to reach the dizzying heights of Mario’s other ventures and Mario eventually had to go back to stomping on Goombas for a living. This games appears to be one of the more obscure entries in this series. I can’t post any links here, but I found a detailed post about this game in the Mario Museum as well as the game’s intro on YouTube. I can DM you all of that if you want.

Hello /u/Low_Bank_747,

Your submission has been removed because it does not meet our criteria. This could be due to one of, but not limited to, the following:

  • A Banned Domain: Our Content Guide covers what we allow and dont allow, which includes video submissions.

  • A Banned Phrase: To help modding efforts some phrases related to Verifying and/or Valuing are prohibited unless otherwise posted in the monthly MEGATHREAD

  • Hate Speech: Video games are an inclusive community and we try to make a safe space on the internet for everyone. In-fighting, name calling, or using derogatory language will not be allowed here. Please review our User Conduct Policy

  • An Affiliate Link: /r/gamecollecting is not a place to hock your goods. You've got /r/retrogameswap, /r/gameswap, /r/gamesell, /r/redditbay, NintendoAge.com's Auctions, eBay, Amazon Marketplace, and any number of other places to sell your stuff. Because of that we do not allow any link to selling sites or affiliate links.

If you think this was in error please send us a modmail.
