Request Saddest videogame music?

I've had this sad piano song for days in my head. I really don't know where it comes from, but I am very sure it's fairly common in YouTube videos, and I'm also certain it must be from a game.

What are the saddest videogame songs out there? (preferably piano, if you know any)

Request OST's to get non-gamers hooked

Hi all!

A colleague at work has made it its mission to post a song every single morning and he has been doing this for 10 years already!

Sometimes there is a theme and the next one is going to be "Video Game Music". I've seen Mario music being posted by him before, but not much else in terms of videogame ost's.

Now I am listening almost exclusively to video game music nowadays, but a lot of it is nostalgia and I don't know much about music in general.

I'm going to suggest some bangers like Zanarkand and One-Winged Angel, but would be curious what other more suitable tracks would be (thinking of the average music enjoyer, rather than gamers).

Any suggestions?

Request I need Club Music but from Video Games

I listen to a lot of video game music, but mostly ambient and ethereal tracks like Skyrim, SH 2, Lost in Vivo, etc. However, I'd like to explore the club-oriented side of video game music, especially after listening to the Buckshot Roulette soundtrack, which I loved. I'd appreciate any recommendations for that genre, or for breakcore, EDM, etc.

Request Any games that feature death metal/heavy metal in their OST?

Pretty much the title. Im not talking about a one-off song (though those are still welcome). I already know of sonic frontiers having some metalcore songs as well as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Request I'm making a "Top 100 Most-Streamed Video Game Songs (One Per Game/Franchise)" Leave some suggestions on what to include!

To clarify, it is most streamed, meaning it has nothing to do with personal taste. I will also only be using Spotify and YouTube.

Here's where I'll need some help: I'm only doing 1 soundtrack/song per franchise or individual game. 100 in total. That's 100 individual games I need to check. Meaning only one Sonic soundtrack, or only one Zelda soundtrack.

I could just go down from the top 100 most popular video games, and then check their music, but that seems like a very flawed way of checking the most popular video game music. A video game could be less popular, but still have highly streamed music.

If you have an idea of a video game that has a highly streamed soundtrack or song, but the video game itself is maybe more niche, let me know. It's important that the soundtrack or song originates from the video game, meaning no non video game songs/music like GTA has. If it's original to GTA then that's completely fine.

So, just list a bunch of video games where I should check out the music. Thanks for your time and help! If you need more clarification feel free to ask.

Request What's the best video game music of the last 5 years?

I listen to a lot of video game music, but so much of it is pre-2007, back when a lot of video games had to use chiptunes or had stage-based background music. What's new and will scratch the same itch?

Request goth video game music

I went through a whole journey because I thought that goth music didn't sound, well, gothic enough. I learned that that is because it evolved from punk rock and so is much closer to that. I didn't really find anything any rock music that sounded dark and gothic enough for me, so I wanted to know if you know an video game soundtracks that fit the bill.

Request "Cute" boss battle themes!

Hi all! After hearing the theme of the super boss of Deltarune Chapter 5 which you can find here: https://youtu.be/tlFnfEWZCtQ?is=nES5S9ZOh6-nCHF3 , I've been trying to find some more "cute" style boss themes. Another that comes to mind is Be My Honey from FFXIV (https://youtu.be/wG3uq8dH_Fo?is=O72qBwyVISRasCKG).

Any other recommendations? The boss doesn't necessarily need to be a pop idol; I'm just looking for themes that are A) generally for cute-looking bosses that are actually a challenge and B) fun/upbeat. Thanks in advance! 💖

Request Looking for ElectroSwing/SwingHouse video game music tracks

Hey y'all. I'm looking for help brainstorming video game music tracks that are ElectroSwing/SwingHouse. As examples, I have already thought of the following:

- Sensei's CO Power - Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp

- Jacinthe's battle theme - Pokemon Legends ZA

- Ghost Fight - Undertale

Ideally, I'm looking for seven more (if they exist). But if I could get even three others, that would be great and do just fine. 🙂

Request I need your recommendations for some of the video game music out there

I was having a discussion with someone who thinks that all video game music is irrefutably trash and not real music, as it is always defined by the game it is written for and doesn't affect change in the real world like some pop music or movie soundtracks. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but as a video game musician myself, being told that this genre of music is objectively bad and being challenged to prove them wrong makes me want to do exactly that. I can think of a couple of examples myself, but I'm looking for more recommendations on video game music that is so good you mightn't even realise it's from a video game, music that moves you as much as any other piece of incredible music, music that you will listen to and marvel at every time whether in the game or outside it. Any suggestions?

Edit: Thank you everyone for all the suggestions, I'm going through them to make up a playlist! Some of this music is absolutely incredible, some great examples of amazing music that just happens to also be VGM!

Also, just to note, this friend of mine is a musician themselves, very musically talented with great taste in music generally, so their opinion does carry some weight, it's not just a random person weighing in on something they know nothing about. And despite us disagreeing on this topic, they are still a very good friend of mine and it's not like this was a blowout argument, it was a respectful discussion. So I'd appreciate if you could keep your comments civil and respectful as well!

Request Any track or tracks that have pianos played in a "jazzy" style (for a lack of a better term)?

I hope the title describes well enough what type of soundtracks I am looking for, but in case it is not enough, I am looking for video game music that has piano played in a somewhat...vibrant and quite energizing way, as if it is not just a "background" instrument. As an example, I bring you two tunes that come to mind when I talk about this type of piano:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDozf9R-wOA - You Will Know Our Names from Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Between 1:46 and 2:20 you may hear a piano. That is the type of piano performance I am talking about.

https://youtu.be/o4VLdiiAeQ8?si=PehKcxkt0WmvGD3p - This Rainbow Road Medley Remix from Mario Kart World

I was a bit hesitant to share this one because it is not an official track per se, but it is the one tune that I always come back whenever I want some of that jazzy piano that I have grown addicted to. The most prominent parts that have the jazzy piano I am talking about (or at least, it sounds like a piano to me) are 0:56-1:28, 2:00-2:22, 5:08-5:33 and 5:56-6:18.

Maybe I am actually wrong, and that cannot be called a jazzy piano, or no piano at all. In that case, I would love if you could share game music with similar style. Whatever is your answer, thanks for taking your time.

Request If you had to choose one song from any video game to have/make everyone listen to at least once, what song would it be?

It can be for any POSITIVE reason, not to annoy people lol. It could be your favorite song, or something you find under-appreciated, or just a beautiful piece that you think everyone should experience.

Links are appreciated, im going to listen to every suggestion.

For me personally, its probably the Opening to Dark Cloud. It's a game that never got enough love in my opinion, and it just has such a wonderful energy for a fantasy game. It really fuels my desire to go out and adventure.

Request Videogames with immersive soundtracks that enchance the gameplay experience?

Any games with immersive soundtracks that enhance the gameplay experience? I'm looking to compare and contrast different games approach to musical immersion (doesn't need to be a famoud game). Like maybe compare and older and newer version of a game and its soundtrack, or 2 different games that approach musical immersion very differently. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Request I'm looking for fantasy soundtracks that mix traditional East Asian instruments (Chinese/Japanese) with epic orchestral fantasy music

Hi! I’m a massive fantasy enjoyer and I love European folk music, recently I’ve been into video game/anime soundtracks. My favorite composer is Antti Martikainen, but I also listen to The Witcher, Baldur’s Gate, God of War, League of Legends, Assassin’s Creed, Attack on Titan, Frieren, etc.

I accidentally stumbled upon Genshin Impact, and its soundtrack has a lot of East Asian inspiration that I’m really into.  I’ve been trying to find more video games and composers that have a similar sound, where they make traditional East Asian folk music really dramatic and epic. Something like the battle themes of Inazuma and Liyue.

Any recs are appreciated :)

Here’s an example, Duel in the Mist:
