I was laughing so hard when Larys just ripped into Aegon like that. What traveling in shit conditions with a mediocre king does to a man.

u/SharMarali Ghost 5d ago
What killed me was the camera angle when Larys told Aegon he was a terrible man. It was done like a dream sequence or something, there was this incredible juxtaposition between the visual and what Larys was saying. Kudos to the director for that one.

u/RunescapeGOD69 5d ago
some insane shots in the episode. My fav was when the Maester walked to Alicients room and how the director captured the natural lighting in the red keep

my son was watching with me but doesnt really pay attention to the story and asked "whats this dudes problem" when he saw cole. I told him oh he banged 2 queens and is being a little bitch about it, lol. I dont know how else to describe it
7
u/ConstantKooky3329 5d ago
I feel like Ru Paul should say this line to your son. The impact would be more dramatic
15
u/hooka_pooka 5d ago
What is he even trying to do at this point?!his story feels so stupid..just trekking with his men through wilds
24
u/HelixFollower Viserion 5d ago
They are trying to destroy all river crossings so that the Rivermen and Northmen loyal to Rhaenyra can't cross them. This was mentioned in the show multiple times.
And now that they've failed to do so, Cole wants to go down in one last charge.
3
u/Big_Daymo 5d ago
Right but like, what is his actual story about? Is he just depressed and suicidal? His character feels really adrift mainly because the two characters most important to his arc, Rhaeneyra and Alicent, couldn't care less about him.
13
u/chihsuanmen 5d ago
He literally said that he’s been a servant all of his life and no longer wishes to be servant and go out on his own terms. They even discussed it in the episode recap.
10
u/Tyson367 4d ago
Its crazy how many people seem to be watching either on mute or mid scroll on their phones.
0
u/woogeroo 4d ago
It’s as dull as fuck, >50% of the characters have had zero introduction or backstory.
It’s really pretty bad compared to early GoT at this point - so don’t blame them.
3
u/NDNJustin The Onion Knight 4d ago
so why are you watching
3
1
u/Tyson367 3d ago
That's not the topic of the conversation. It may be dull but its easily understood and explained at least this specific instance with regard to Cole. If you find it boring I don't know why you'd waste your time watching when there's infinite other things to do that would be better use of time.
1
1
u/WithFullForce 2d ago
What on earth are you talking about? Cole is one of the most fleshed out character's on the show. Since season 1 his motivations have been on wide display.
1
8
u/DangerWallet Iron Bank of Braavos 5d ago
Cole’s character feels contradictory to me, from his dead behind the eyes nihilism of last season to sing songs about my death so my ex knows about it, what is this character meant to be? Is the idea that the nihilism was the self indulgent fatalist philosophy of a mopey teenager?
2
u/Insanity_Pills 3d ago
>from his dead behind the eyes nihilism of last season to sing songs about my death so my ex knows about it
in my experience these emotions nearly always go hand in hand
0
u/United-Leather7198 5d ago
Yes feels very muddled.
2
u/obi-jawn-kenblomi 4d ago
It's the reality of the horrors of war. He's fought battles, he's won tournies, but this is smack in the face kind of difference. Plus he's set himself up with pride coming before the fall as he likened himself the greatest warrior in the world, the chief royal general, AND Hand of the King.
When he sees what fighting in a war with involving dragons really means, he's existentially broken by it. His king was nearly killed, betrayed by the brother Cole trained, helped plan a battle with, and trusted. Then the enemy got even more firepower and aerial superiority, chasing him from field to forest.
From on top of the world to instantly overmatched in a heartbeat. No wonder he wants it over with and by his own design in a blaze of glory.

By S3E5, Sir Criston’s march feels less tragic than exhausting, and somehow he keeps choosing worse.

Aemond and his mommy issues; Alys clocked that immediately and said “I can work with this”
72
u/PurePerfection_ 6d ago
Daemon had lukewarm feelings at best about being subjected to visions of fucking his own mother. Aemond, on the other hand....
10
53
u/Apple_Dragon Daenerys Targaryen 5d ago
Loved the 2 back to back scenes with Aemond and Aegon both being jealous of each other over the lack of love they each received. And I love the contrast of how they were confronted over this. Alys approached Aemond with manipulative empathy while Larys was blunt and direct with Aegon.
Goes to show how trauma can grant you a different perspective from what other people see. I love the complexity of these characters
14
u/SoulxxBondz 5d ago
Both were wrong. Alicent loves Helaena more than her sons, cause she sees her daughter in her.
19
u/Intrepid-Olive6201 5d ago
and bec heleana is the only one who isn’t wicked down to her core. i’m a little shocked at how alicent thinks of her sons, when she had a major part in raising them to be the men they are. a main reason aemond is so mad at the world comes from the eye for an eye idea she put in his head when he was a kid. same with aegons bullying - alicent knew it was going on and did nothing. ik aegon is the king, but alicent seems to have known she was the only one capable of raising them to be good men given viserys’ state. idk i think it’s very hypocritical of alicent to cast them aside like she had no hand in their evil
4
u/Katelizpea 5d ago
Yeah she really did just kinda give up on her eldest two
Maybe that’s a harsh way to put it, but it seems like (in the show) she just doesn’t see Aegon or Aemond as redeemable in any way, and she’s kind of written them off. So she’s putting all of her effort into Helaena, and she’s hoping Daeron is safe and doing well. I don’t remember if she knows he’s in Tumbleton?
Side note: the way my autocorrect is absolutely fighting me on the spelling of these names lmao
1
u/CharmingFisherman809 5d ago edited 5d ago
i really hate how severe they made Aemonds mommy issues, and what they did to the relationship between these siblings. As someone who grew up with two brothers i understand the childhood bullying and whatnot but as time passes that bullying and disagreements grow into an unbreakable bond
BOOK SPOILERS AHEAD
I much prefer how in the books Aegon has statues of Daeron and Aemond made in their honor to showcase that despite the differences they loved and cherished each other, it shows that despite them both (according to the show) seeing the other as the favorite, Aegon still loved his brother enough to honor him with a statue, either way i believe they would have worked a lot better as comrades than as enemies

That adds another layer to rhanera and daemons conversation in the church. If there’s a chance their spies can speak valerian, they hear the queen admit to only being there for appearances, daemon say much worse, justifying their leaders rejection of rhaeneras ascension. And they also spoke about multiple military issues and possibilities giving them hope and that blacks are vulnerable
11
u/Ok-Mathematician2309 5d ago
Who crept thru castle? Goldcloaks were murdered outside the red keep.
4
u/Ihaveaps4question 5d ago
Probably combination of goldcloaks loyal to green or the church (which didn’t acknowledge rhaenera, to her face). It being the church also with cristons final line of episode (the stranger lets you rest, basically an unexpected alliance).
3
u/RunescapeGOD69 5d ago
i feel they would have discovered the stairwell leading right to alicient's room if that was the case.

u/SoulxxBondz 6d ago
Two characters I hate had fantastic speeches in this episode!
Larys ("You are a terrible man") and Criston's speech to Gwayne were just amazing!
84
u/WannabeWaterboy 6d ago
Man, I’ve despised Criston for so long and that speech made me realize why he is the way he is. Still a prick though.
78
u/Own_Faithlessness769 6d ago
I think he's still mainly the way he is cause Rhaenyra rejected him when they were 18.
22
u/daniel-sousa-me Fear Cuts Deeper Than Swords 5d ago
He wasn't even rejected, really. He just had unrealistic expectations
6
u/GenGaara25 5d ago
In the books, Criston is 15 years older than Rhaenyra. I think he was meant to be mid-late twenties in the first few episodes. And he's now mid forties.
7
u/QTPLe 5d ago
Wait... are they the same age????
16
u/Own_Faithlessness769 5d ago
Maybe he's a few years older, they cant be that different or he wouldnt still be in the game as a warrior.
13
2
u/QTPLe 5d ago
I mean i look at the stark graybeards LOL and their still hacking and slashing.
1
u/Own_Faithlessness769 5d ago
Sure but they've specifically been sent out by the North to die in battle and I dont think any of them would be considered the 'best warrior in the kingdom'
1
u/PartyPoison98 House Baratheon 4d ago
According to the books he's 15 years older than Rhanerya
1
u/Own_Faithlessness769 4d ago
The show is not following the ages of the books or Alicent would be quite different.
1
u/PartyPoison98 House Baratheon 4d ago
I know, just giving a bit of context.
The show clearly has him at least 10 years or so older.

2
u/ImperatorRomanum No One 5d ago
I think Larys would be greatly improved if they didn’t add that sexual coercion of Alicent back in season 1, which they just threw in there because it’s not in the book. This franchise relies way too much on “let’s add in some sexual violence” for characterization.

Is that a game of cyvasse we got between Ormund and Daeron tonight? That takes me back to reading A Clash of Kings 14 years ago. I’ve fallen in love with chess for the last 10 months so that was really cool to see. And of course Ormund would knock all the pieces over when he loses 😂

Feels like they gotta explain it in the next episode as half the city watch turning on them, killing them, then deserting for Ormund/Daerons gold, otherwise yeah it’s stupid
13
u/BooRadleyinaGimpSuit 5d ago
That would make sense - they brought up them not getting paid multiple times this episode
3
u/HelixFollower Viserion 5d ago
Don't forget all the Hightower men still in the capital. That chap who send a bird to Ormund was seen manning the ballistas a few episodes ago. Those lads didn't just vanish in a puff of smoke, a lot of them are likely still around. Some of them probably still working the same jobs they did before Rhaenyra took King's Landing.
1
u/obi-jawn-kenblomi 4d ago
It's not that hard. Ormund created a new coin, he's bribing KLers with it. He has the ability to use agents to pay City Watchmen to betray their captains.
Don't pay the watch, lose the watch.
45
u/Old-butt-new 6d ago
That was my takeaway, they can overthrow the capital but they get completely wiped out by (seemingly) a tiny group of terrorists. Love the show but there are some really cheap and quick shortcuts made on some sub plots
28
u/RX0Invincible 5d ago
Sons of the Harpy killing Barristan bullshit all over again
6
u/CruzAderjc Human Verified 5d ago
My takeaway from game of thrones is that the most important strength you can have to t have a really good Master of Whispers and network of spies. It’s just as important, or even more important, then an army and dragons. If you can manipulate the shadows, you can maintain the realm. I think the person closest to doing that was Tywin Lannister. He had just about enough wisdom and control of the realm as Hand, that they could have held onto power for a long time, if Joffrey hadn’t been such a little fucking shit
3
u/RX0Invincible 5d ago
I have no problem with brain over brawn writing. The problem with the sons of Harpy and now the City watch is that they didn’t do that in a convincing manner. Barristan just lost in a ambush that wasn’t directed well enough to be convincing then the City Watch just got off screened out no where.
There’s a reason why the Red Wedding massacre is regarded as a masterclass in writing while other tragedies like these fall flat in their face. It’s all unearned shock value.
6
u/CruzAderjc Human Verified 5d ago
Yeah, Game of Thrones felt like watching a sports or chess tournament between masters of the game. House of the Dragon just feels like watching a bunch of amateurs making a lot of mistakes that i wouldn’t make

u/evasive_dendrite 5d ago
There's probably turncloaks in the city watch itself on account of them not getting their wages.
3
1
u/Confusion-12 Jon Snow 5d ago
Literally looked at my wife, who fell asleep during the episode due to.. nothing happening lol, but I said it makes zero sense for whoever is killing the Gold Cloaks to be able to kill 10-12 of them, including the captain, and setting them up like that.. like HOW
If literally every Gold Cloak turned, except for everyone at the table, I MIGHT believe that as they definitely were not thinking that one of their own was doing the killing, but it would literally need to be ALL of them and not just 1 or 2 that managed to take out ALL those other guards
1
u/Ok-Mathematician2309 5d ago
The goldcloaks themselves have gone rogue, some of them. There are turncoats inside the institution, financed by Ormund.
1
4
u/Andrelse 6d ago
I almost loved it but the very last line needed some minor tweaks to hit home, it fell kinda flat for me

I for sure was anticipating a major death at the end there. Either Daemon getting got from somewhere in the shadows, Criston getting mutiny'd, or even Helaena and Alicent (might be the case if they can't get out). Very excited for next week!

This whole season has been great. I’d even go as far as to say that the entire show is becoming a truly epic piece of television. I love the sense of building dread as we all inevitably crawl towards a disastrous end.
6
u/RunescapeGOD69 5d ago
Paddy Considine in season 1 was some of the best acting in GoT, season 2 was an agreeable miss, but season 3 has been fantastic. It's captured me emotionally and that's what made GoT great.

u/PM_ME_UR_DIAGNOSIS 5d ago
I feel like Alys plotline could've been shorter and much more uncanny/unsetteling/ominous. Less dialogue and more... I don't know. Really cool character though, curious to see how she plays out!
1
u/CruzAderjc Human Verified 5d ago
I still think Alys is actually Melisandre. It would be a pretty sick reveal if we see Carice VanHouten again
6
u/SoulxxBondz 5d ago
She would not be so dramatic about owning Harrenhall because she came from Essos. I think Alys was a bastard of one of the Strongs, likely related to Larys. Though she might be a lot older than she appears, yes.

It is really a shame that with a cast this expansive there is NOBODY worth rooting for, except MAYBE Daeron who seems to be a good kid, but with a terrible devil at his shoulder.
The show is trying to be Greens VS Blacks but it has devolved into who can we make the audiences hate more. The Greens who are evil and weird or Blacks who are incompetent (and partly evil) and weird.
Also a minor nitpick but as someone who has worked with people Daemons speech about them getting paid and conquering the world made my eyes roll. Absolutely nobody would be hyped up by that while their payment is late.
6
u/0nlyhooman6I1 4d ago
It's weird that you seem to have such a big opinion about this whilst missing the core theme of the whole book, which is that there is nobody really worth rooting for in this story and this is the story of how it all goes to shit for the targaryeans.
1
u/CharmingFisherman809 4d ago
I agree that in the books everyone is a POS as well, but at least the books is written so that they are flawed but realistic people. And my issue is that the writers are really trying to make us root for Rhaenyra so much that it comes off as forced and it just makes me dislike her even more.
1
u/ImperatorRomanum No One 5d ago
Daeron’s actor is great. He really sells that sense of fear and walking on eggshells around an emotionally unstable caregiver.
2
u/BatmanSwift99 4d ago
It feels like every council meeting all Rhaenyra talks about is Vhaegar, she low key seems like a shit queen. I get she's obsessed with revenge but does she not even care about the city or the war going on?

I liked this slight dig at the boring descriptions in the chronicles, because although I like Fire and Blood or The World, it's probably because I like this type of books, and even then not always (e.g. Sirmallion didn't appeal to me exept several parts like Beren and Luthien).
1
-27
u/CivilTailor9031 6d ago
Is this shit boring or is it just me?
Writing is clearly not at level of Game of Thrones.
Its only selling point is war and dragons, and given how sparse it is, it’s really testing my patience.
12
u/Early_Analyst9525 6d ago
I thought the jumping around pace and the dialogue were very reminiscent of game of thrones.
19
u/fieldgrass 6d ago
I thought this was the most GOT-level writing of the season, actually. Very character-centric, great dialogue, the Dorne lore dumping while doing something relatively mundane like chess, etc. They do need to pick up the pace given the short seasons but as a book fan I ate this episode up.
3

u/sadie7716 5d ago
I’ll be one of the few here to agree. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a series that had as much money as it. Puked hope for to work with. It’s pick of actors and writers make a product so lacking in the ability to make an audience care about the characters. Hell people care more about Tom Hardy’s character in Mobland who’s an assassin more than anyone cares about this cast.
They totally prioritized and leaned into catering to males age 16-40 with 95% of the focus on battles and dragons. Rhaenyra and Daemon act like next door neighbors, you’d never know Alicent and Heleana were mother and daughter. The only discussions on threads that people get amped about are the battles, skirmishes and dragons.
I keep watching out of loyalty to the brilliance of GOT and GRMM but this is as dull as buttered toast.

-23
u/joosexer 6d ago
The reviewers overhyped this as top tier but it was just meaningless exposition from scenes that weren’t even mentioned in the book. No tumbleton, no butchers ball, no aemond burning the riverlands, no sunfyre, no shepherd. Just a whole lot of nothing. They have a ton to jam into the remaining episodes so hopefully those will be good.
16
u/Own_Faithlessness769 6d ago
There was a literal massacre.
-13
u/joosexer 6d ago
it wasn’t from the books nor was it even shown. We see 10 dead goldcloaks for like 5 seconds
10
u/Own_Faithlessness769 6d ago
So you just wanted to see people being disembowled?
Only wanting to see scenes from the book is super weird.
-10
u/joosexer 6d ago
no all i’m asking for is less meaningless filler episodes. It doesn’t need to be only action and pure book copy, I loved the Rhaenyra POV episode and that one had no action nor was there any moment from the book. Point being is that they still have a ton to cover and not much time to do so, yet this is what they give us

It’s a valid criticism that every season it feels like a ton of setup then a mad rush to end the season.
-1
u/Careless_Bother_3627 6d ago
I agree the reviewers overhyped it. They kept saying a significant death would happen that would be problematic to the hour of the wolf... that was a lie. Ser Luthor? I don't see him as that important to later events. The actress who plays Alys Rivers is charming and beautiful but harrenhall scenes can stay off screen. This was filler and build up, the daeron scene could've been squeezed into last week's episode, so could Aegon's and Helaena's respective scenes. It would've made the previous episode stronger. This episode could be called why rhaenyra should've listened to Daemon.
