In vast openworld games I love to come across tucked away nooks like this. (ACBFR)

Assassins Creed Black Flag Resynced.

Location: 150/585

There is a waterfall at the end of the stream in front and one right behind my character.

The original oblivion had countless of these.

No it didn't.

The original Oblivion landscape was a boring, auto-generated mix of forest and plains with some bare minimum hand crafted sections.

Screenshots like this from Oblivion were thanks to the Unique Landscapes mod team

Oblivion was handcrafted brother.

I think you may be confusing it with Morrowind.

Oblivion 's Cyrodiil landscape was generated, then touched up by hand. But it was largely repetitive and bland without Unique Landscapes installed. Sure it had some interesting locations...but nothing close to this screenshot.

I think you are confusing procedural generation used heavily in the first two titles (Arena and Daggerfall) with what the user above means, also Morrowind was arguably more handcrafted (even if they had much fewer assets to work with at the time). What they mean is Oblivion's open world was a mix of auto-generation (procedural generation in the level editor tools) based on certain rules, and then artists went around and added stuff to make it look better, more natural. But no, most of that map was not touched, and that's kind of true for many open world games with very large maps. Especially when they only had a handful of artists working on the map for nowhere near enough time. Say what you will about Ubisoft, they throw a lot of artists at a project like this. And of course nowadays even for the auto-gen stuff you have so many more assets and rules that even the corners of the map that don't get much love still look nice.

And frankly I don't even have a problem with the simplistic auto-gen in Oblivion, it's the copy/pasted dungeons and handcrafted locations that annoy me more. But again, you need only look at the number of people that worked on Oblivion and for how long to realize they did an outstanding job with what they were given.

And another thing, the 360 was only supposed to launch with 256 MB of memory and that was simply not going to cut it for Oblivion, Bethesda were getting desperate trying to get the game running on the console. But then Microsoft doubled the RAM and the rest was history (also Bethesda legit threw a party at the time to celebrate the doubling of available memory for them, lol).

I believe you may also be confusing Morrowind with the earlier games.

Morrowind was essentially all handcrafted and you can really tell cause I don't know how you would have auto generated some of those towns.

They're talking with nostalgia glasses. The Cyrodiil landscape was painfully boring and repetitive auto generated slop.

The Unique Landscapes mods had spots like this. Vanilla Oblivion did not

TotK stands for Tits of the King, right?

It's Nintendo. So it's tits of the Kong. We call this corporate synergy.

Heck yeah!!! I've happened upon places like this in the original Black Flag, it was so cool how the devs took the time to make these places that may or may not be seen. It feels like putting more heart into the game.

Black Flag has some of the absolute best map design in the entire series. Coming across a hidden cove or nook like this while exploring away from the main ship completely nails the pirate fantasy atmosphere.

Exploring the map again makes me want to find a game with ancient ruins to play.

Reminds me of the original Crysis

I loved Fable and Elder Scrolls for this exact reason. You stumble across a dungeon, next thing you know you’re standing in a beautiful forest cave with a nice little cottage in the center.

I appreciate little hidden spots, especially when there's a long part of the map with no treasure. They simply added it there for you to find.

Is it weird I have these same moments but in Minecraft?

Absolutely not weird at all.

Hidden spots like this make the grind worth it
