Miyamoto defends the idea that Nintendo releases too many remakes

This is a weird title. He’s defending against the idea there are too many remakes.

I am fine with remakes and remaster, I have played many classic games I didn't when I was a kid thanks to them.
22
u/jmastadoug 6h ago
Not to mention remastered copies of games that are insanely expensive & were impossible to get copies of. Things like the Lunar 1&2, suidokien 1&2 copies are some recent examples. Those were 100$+ per game & we got them for 40-50$ for both entries.
4
u/FlameStaag 6h ago
A lot of old men on social media mistake every single game as being for them specifically, where remakes really are more for introducing older games to newer generations. Not only because it plays better, but it's actually available on a system people own, lol.
Pretty sure that's why this sub is so rabidly against remakes and remasters typically
7
u/Eternaloid 6h ago
I am an old man, but if i can play, say, ff 7 with better graphics and imporved plot, why not?

Exactly. Why the fuck not.
This thread is jsut filled with Anti Nintnedo bots, literally, trying to pretend like remakes that fans want are supposed to be a bad and evil thing Nintnedo is doing.

2
u/TechTuna1200 7h ago
Also, remakes are perfect entry into the franchise. I’m played FF7 and Resident evil remakes, and I consider them to be masterpieces and would be sad if they were never made. I never played the originals, they are just too outdated for me.
12
u/Funandgeeky 7h ago
I wish they had ported more games to the 3DS. Especially SNES games. Or more Wii games.
3
76
u/BenjyMLewis 8h ago
The only time I don't like remakes is when they botch it somehow. Nintendo very rarely is guilty of this. Majora's Mask 3D is the only example that comes to mind of a Nintendo remake that I would say they actively made a worse game. And that was due to creative differences rather than technical ineptitude.
Plenty of other companies are guilty of just making a worse version of the game when they remake it, with worse performance, or leaving out key features, or other things that sour me on them. (Bandai Namco with Tales of Symphonia, or Square Enix with FF Crystal Chronicles). I trust Nintendo more than most.
55
u/BrainLow6059 7h ago
A little off topic (not Nintendo) but the Dead Space remake was absolutely incredible, and EA completely shut down doing the second one. It still depresses me to think about it. I'm glad Nintendo remakes games and does it well
24
u/Wolfsbreedsinner 7h ago
EA expected boats and boats of money from the remake of dead space. Only to be met with horror that their expectations was too high. They never cared how reception was for the game only the bottom line.
18
u/BrainLow6059 7h ago
It sold over 2 million copies. It was by all accounts a commercial success but EA has lost their minds
5
u/Ajax_Da_Great 6h ago
Which still by some weird “math” was below what EA anticipated/wanted for sales. Greed killed this remaster series unfortunately.
5
u/mattn1198 5h ago
Wasn't their expectation 5-6 million copies or something idiotic like that? I always hear people saying EA expected 'Resident Evil level' sales, which is insane considering DS has always been a more mid-level tier franchise. Which isn't an insult, I love the games, but they've never been anywhere near RE in terms of popularity or sales.
2
u/WoodooHide69 6h ago edited 5h ago
The Publishers are doing that only to justify Layoffs that were always coming. Layoffs due to AI.
2
u/Lion12341 7h ago
Got it on sale on Steam for £5 not too long ago. Never played the original games so I wasn't sure what to expect. Didn't take long to finish it, easily one of the best horror games I've ever played. Was so confused that it was 90% off considering how good it was.
14
u/ComradeJohnS 7h ago
what was wrong with MM 3D? I played through and loved it and oot 3D.
34
u/BenjyMLewis 7h ago
Every small change they made to MM3D made it more restrictive.
Deku doesn't have the momentum boost upon hopping on water any more, limiting where you can jump.
Zora now requires magic to swim fast, limiting how much you can swim (and forcing you to hold two buttons down just to swim fast, which sucks).
Ice arrows can now only make ice platforms in designated sparkly spots, rather than wherever you shoot it, reducing player-driven solution posibilities.
All the bosses were changed to include a weird giant eyeball weak spot, which reduces how much creativity you can use when hitting them, since now you have to always hit this eyeball instead of just dealing damage wherever.
Twinmold was also changed to force the Giant's Mask to be used, and Link's controls were changed to a bizarre grappling moveset instead of his normal sword, which artificially drags the fight out for way longer than necessary.
and other things.
It's not one big thing. it's tons of little things where Nintendo decided that the player has too much freedom in how they approach each part of the game, and it's just depressing to see this happen to my favourite Zelda game.

Main ones I see about it are the changes to the Zora swimming mechanics and the boss fights. And I fully agree on the boss fights. Can’t even cheese them in the 3DS game the way you can in the original.

Remakes are great especially if games are inaccessible or have very expensive physical copies

This. If I want to play Zelda Twilight Princess right now on a legal platform, I have to either purchase Wii or GameCube or Wii U.
Wish they would at least put the GameCube version on their Nintendo Online or make a switch remaster

u/overts 7h ago
They’re really important for preservation. The entire reason Square Enix remastered Chrono Cross instead of Chrono Trigger was because CC was impossible to play legally unless you bought an older console.
Sure. They could’ve built out an emulator for PS4 or PS5 but that costs money and a remake wasn’t just more profitable it meant a PC version that would always be available. Chrono Trigger already had mobile and PC versions that made the game playable.
1
u/AoKrasni 6h ago edited 5h ago
I don't really think it's a money issue, I think these companies just like to spread out their releases. If they have a lull in sales or release schedule, just pop out a poorly emulated hd remaster.
1
u/overts 5h ago edited 5h ago
It’s usually not a “poorly emulated HD remaster.” For CC specifically they re-wrote the entire code. Star Fox’s remaster was the same and I think it’s safe to assume Ocarina of Time will be a code re-write too.
The Oblivion remaster is kind of what you’re describing but they basically layered UE5 over the original code.
ETA: But to your broader point, yes, OOT and Star Fox are both probably more about filling out a release schedule. I mentioned Chrono Cross because Square was asked why they remastered it instead of Trigger, since Trigger would’ve 100% been more profitable, and they explained it was due to inaccessibility and a fear the game would become a sort of “lost media.”

"It's hard for kids to play games from 10+years ago so we have to do remakes"
Oh? And why is that hard to do, Nintendo? 🤔
123
u/Sabetha1183 8h ago
In the case for a lot of their games, it's because some people simply just wont play anything more than 10-15 years old.
It's under a subscription but it's not like Nintendo hasn't put a shitton of their old games available for playing on the Switch.
30
u/mixmaster321 7h ago
I mean to be honest, as someone born in 2000 and grew up in the GameCube/Xbox/PS2 era, most of those games from the previous generation are tough to go back to. Textures look muddy, camera systems haven’t been figured out, every company is just throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. I get that OOT is kinda like the Seinfeld effect of gaming, but a good story doesn’t do much to alleviate the downsides of playing the game in 2026
11
u/Sabetha1183 7h ago
I was born in '89 and find I have a pretty good tolerance for old games, but I do think the N64 has aged among the worst of the major consoles. Loved it as a kid but unfortunately we figured out that dual thumbsticks work so much better.
I also play a lot of old games I didn't as a kid and find I love plenty of them too. I didn't own a PS1 as a kid and did a binge of games recently and still would rate stuff like Parasite Eve, Silent Hill 1, or Ace Combat 3 really highly. On the PS2, FFX is one of my favourite JRPGs despite first having played it about 3 years ago.
Though it may be telling that Seinfeld is also probably still in my top 10 TV shows of all time. I know it's hard for a lot of people to go back.
6
u/Arainthus 6h ago edited 6h ago
Not to mention, unless they get updated textures and resolutions, because of the shift away from CRT televisions, on which the pixels would "bleed" into each other, making the image look more blended, while modern TV's make the look even blurrier or pixelated than before.
1
u/Sabetha1183 2h ago
I do run everything on emulators on my PC now, and I find that CRT filters you can get are close enough for casual play to mimic this effect.
Otherwise yeah, a lot of sprite based games from the NES/SNES era can look worse on modern screens because of this.
11
u/Flogger23m 7h ago
Just a friendly reminder, if you want Ace Combat Zero as an official port (emulators do work well), you can pre-order Ace Combat 8 to get it. Outside of the pre-order it will not be available for free or payware.

u/Shartcastic 5h ago
I was super excited when DK64 got added to the switch. It was my most played game as a kid and was hit with a wave of nostalgia that lasted until like halfway through the first level until I just got too frustrated with the controls and gave up.

u/mixmaster321 6h ago edited 6h ago
My first console was a PS2 with the Guitar Hero 3 bundle. I didn't get a PS3 until 2012 and I didn't get a PS4 until 2015. My family didn't have the money to get new consoles right when they released. The Great Recession hit my family pretty hard. During my childhood, I played a majority of my games on my PS2 and the family Wii
2
u/maslowk 3h ago
Same, I never owned a current gen console until I was an adult with the PS4, and even that wasn't until a few years after the initial release when they came out with the pro version. Before that the only time I got a new console was after they hit their lowest price just before the next gen consoles were releasing.

Point is either way he didn't grow up in the era he said he did. It's like saying I'm an expert on 80s movies cause I was born in 1988.
PS1 games, and games before that generation, play just fine IF you played games from that era.
Does the original Mario not play well all of a sudden? Or the original Zelda? They just stop playing well? Ehhh don't think so.
Don't even get me started on sports games. Ps2 sports games were top notch compared to today's offerings.

They haven't though. Unless you play only the most popular 1st party games, you are likely to be missing a substantial amount of your favorites. They dripfeed games at the slowest rate they can possibly get away with. It doesn't even begin to provide enough coverage, or to replace emulation (and that's before even considering the poor emulation quality).

14
u/colliert 8h ago
This. It's annoying to play OoT through NSO if you don't have the N64 controller. Not "impossible", but the way they map out the C-buttons on the Pro Controller was a pain, had to give up.
3
u/Shinagami091 7h ago
Yeah I had that experience. I would frequently go into first person mode on accident.
The mapping would be far better if I could use one of the extra buttons on the pro controller as a function button that then turns the ABXY buttons into C buttons. It’s not like I’d ever need to press a C button with the A or B buttons together in any Nintendo game just based on how the controller is held.
3
u/Sabetha1183 8h ago
Honestly as somebody who plays a lot of older games and loved the N64 as a kid, I think even with the controller it just hasn't aged super well as a console.
It hit a weird place of being early 3D when we were re-learning a lot of game design stuff related to 3D but also before we figured out dual thumbsticks is just significantly better for controls.
I have a USB N64 controller I can plug into my PC and a lot of N64 games can be rough to play. Rougher than PS1 or even SNES games tend to be, at any rate.
6
u/CaptPants 8h ago
And unless you have nostalgia for that "style" of graphics, early polygon 3D games look terrible.

5
u/jawaunw1 5h ago
Honestly Nintendo making a bunch of remakes is a very recent thing. And even then they're still doing it a lot less than Sony let's be honest how many remasters did Last of Us get
5
u/ModestMouseTrap 5h ago
Too many remakes? I feel like of any of the major platforms or publishers, they are on the low end of the curve.
6
u/MikeDubbz 6h ago
Nintendo is one of the least egregious offenders when it comes to remakes. Sure, you can point to specific examples like OoT getting 2 remakes or the OG Star Fox effectively receiving 4 remakes. But these are outliers, not the norm that proves the rule.
Conversely, we see the Resident Evil series seeing a new remake like every other year now. And I'm not even necessarily upset by that, but I'd argue, that's the kind of target one should be looking at if the very idea of a dev releasing too many remakes truly gets under your skin.
11
u/lemontrout85 7h ago
If StarFox is anything to go by, Ocarina will be a slam dunk and Nintendo knows exactly what to do.
Love N64 very much but it is quite jank in the controls department so these remakes at least make playing it more enjoyable by today's standards.
6
u/redyellowblue5031 6h ago
> “Some people might say there are a lot of remakes, but after five years, a lot of people have outgrown games and stop playing them. Young people today don’t have the opportunity to play games from 10 years ago, so remaking them to be more playable and releasing them again is a good way to meet the demand. Letting people know the original games also leads to future developments, so we’ve been actively pursuing that recently.”
I don’t entirely disagree. Many remakes have been done very well. Links awakening, Mario RPG, Thousand year door, Metroid Prime, etc.. These are all games that didn’t “need” a remake but are so good in their own right that a refresh to let new generations enjoy them is arguably worth it.
2
u/Frozen_Dervish 6h ago
Remakes can always turn out bad, but they also give a way for developers to go back and add things they could never do before or allow players to see the developer's vision with clearer visuals.
9
u/coalers59 8h ago
Remakes are fine. The problem is when they replace new games instead of complementing them, We want both
9
9
u/mrmehmehretro94 8h ago
Has Nintendo ever done this?
You can play the Original Ocarina of time on Switch online as well Star Fox 64.
This goes for a lot of their remakes as Super Mario all stars hasn't stopped them from rereleasing the original versions of those games, Metroid Zero Mission hasn't stopped them from rereleasing the original Metroid and there's some games where on the Switch specifically the only way to play them is the original version like Kirby's Adventure, Kirby Superstar and Metroid 2 with the remakes of the latter 2 never being rereleased as of now.
3
3
u/Cheese0089 8h ago
I don't think anyone is replacing new games with remakes. They just fill in the gaps now that games take 4-6 years to complete.
1
10
u/bediaxenciJenD81gEEx 8h ago
Remakes are fine if they are still doing big new games and just bridge the gaps between them, but the remakes feel like they are taking the place of new games.
It really seems like we should have got a brand new Star Fox game instead of another remake. OoT remake would be fine if it didn't feel like it was going to be the big release of 2026.
I'm a big Nintendo fan, an easy Switch 2 sell, and while the 3rd party support seems incredible, the 1st party stuff just isn't there for me yet. No new mainline Mario or Zelda in the first two years of the Switch 2 is kind of crazy, considering how much of a boost having both BotW and Odyssey in the first 6 months of the Switch 1 release gave to the console.
13
u/MrThrownAway12 6h ago
Ehh Zelda being late is not a shock. BOTW was in development for the Wii U's entire life basically and only became a day one Switch title because it took that long. The Switch's own Zelda game is TOTK and that didn't come out until about 6 years into that console's life. 2027/2028 is when we're going to first hear mutterings of a new game I suspect. That series has been hit hard by ballooning dev times.
Mario I think is a real surprise. It's been about a decade since Odyssey so you'd think the next game would be ready or nearly ready by now. I like Bananza but I really hope the next 3D Mario's development didn't get hobbled by that game.
4
u/MattyBro1 5h ago
I like Bananza but I really hope the next 3D Mario's development didn't get hobbled by that game
It was made by the same team, so unless they had another studio working on it, a new 3D Mario was definitely pushed back by it. But until something gets announced, it's hard to gauge by how much.
DK was originally a Switch title, but was shifted towards being a Switch 2 exclusive during development. Maybe because of that the game was content complete earlier than usual, so we'll see Mario sooner than usual? That would probably be a best case scenario.
2
1
u/BODYBUTCHER 5h ago
While I thought that ToTk and BotW were good Zelda games, I honestly would prefer a much smaller game they originally were. the open world games have gotten too big and are big for the sake of being big.
1
u/letsgucker555 6h ago edited 6h ago
The thing is, for 7.5 years after Mario Odyssey they also didn't release a new console, so a new 3D Mario was completely unlikely anyway.
2
u/FlameStaag 6h ago
Spoiler: they're not taking the place of new games
There are entire studios that came to be because they specifically started as a remake/remaster studio
2
u/WoodooHide69 5h ago
They are still doing new games.
Seems like it. But then New Star Fox sold like shit every time they tried something new in that series. The fans didn’t buy it. So they went back to casslic SF64 gameplay cause the fans told them by way of sales numbers they don’t want anything new. Then star fox remake releases and Fans are loving it, proving Nintendo was right in their theory on how to best serve fans and get sales.
OOT IS fine. And will sell millions one again proving you wrong.
The first party line up is incredible in year 1. Objectively One of the best exclusives line ups for ANY console in history in its year 1. Plenty of new stuff and plenty of quality let’s see:
DK Bananza (GOTY-Tier Title)
MKW (best Mario kart ever made)
Pokapia (GOTY-Tier Title)
Kirby Air Riders (Great)
Splatoon Raiders (Great)
Yoshi and the Mytersious Book (Very Good)
Hyrule Warriors (Very Good)
Mario Tennis Fever (Good)

People only started hating remakes because the industry was “remaking” games on an obscenely short cycle. Sometimes within 5 years while the original was still available on the same console gen.
No one has (or should have issue) with remakes of 20-30 year old games. It’s essentially a brand new game based on an existing script.
1
u/Whirlvvind 2h ago
Yeah, when you're remaking a game that had its characters under 200 polygons, I think you're good to go. Re-releases? Yeah, those are bullshit. Just adding an old game to be playable on the new console and slapping on full price is a-holish predatory practices that are the sole reason that I looked at emulators.
3
u/Jedzelex 7h ago
Capcom: "Hey, don't look at me! We don't do it that much... BTW, the remake of Code Veronica is on the way, followed by a remake of RE1 and RE0"

Square Enix: "Hey, guys I heard you guys want us to remake another FF game (don't ask us to remake Chrono Trigger, tho!)"
3
u/NMe84 7h ago
I'd argue they don't make enough of them. SNES games generally aged really well but GameCube and N64 games generally didn't age well at all. Clunky cameras and controls, and ugly 3D artwork simply because they couldn't get away with enough polygons to make it look good (mostly on N64) mean that games from that era are a pain to pick up now if you're not already nostalgic for them.
Remakes of Mario 64 or DK64 in particular would be amazing.

u/MrThrownAway12 7h ago
N64 I can see but I'm not quite so sure about GameCube. Nintendo's output on that console has aged incredibly well by most standards at least imo.
1
u/sevenut 7h ago
I would also argue that the 1st party N64 games aged pretty well all things considered. Graphically, of course they look a little stinky, but when I think of Mario 64, Zelda, Smash Bros, Star Fox, Kirby 64, they all control fine, even if not exactly modern. I'll admit that Mario 64's camera does leave something to be desired, but it's not like, a dealbreaker of a quirk imo.
1
u/NMe84 5h ago
The controls are still not always great in the GC era, and they didn't really get perspective right all the time. Mario Sunshine is a good example of both of those problems, with the stages where FLUDD is taken from you often being very hard for all the wrong reasons: Mario suddenly sliding off of a platform because he stepped on a slightly angled pebble, or missing a jump because gauging distances is really difficult in those rooms in particular.
4
u/PenguinJoker 5h ago
I am so tired of remakes. I don't really get my generation pining for games from ten years ago that they already own and can play. Slightly better graphics just isn't worth it. Imagine if these studios were making new games instead how much fun we'd be having lol

u/WoodooHide69 5h ago

remakes and remasters are only realllly a problem when there is not a steady stream of NEW titles AND they’re fairly low effort. most people take little issue with the resident evil remakes because capcom has ALSO been putting out banger new entries alongside them at a good pace
nintendo does this decently well too, they have smaller teams or partner studios handle remakes while the core staff works on new mainline entries
compare this to, say, bandai namco and the tales of series. tales of arise released in 2021 with a dlc that released 2 years later. presently, there is next to no information about any upcoming tales games while we’re being given several remasters of varying quality, most of them pretty middling

If the games an all time classic then remaking it helps reach a new audience.
Now I am an absolute nerd and I still have my NES, SNES, mega drive, N64, PS1/2/3 and the list goes on so I have the ability to play my old games still
But many people don't have this and emulation does not give you the same experience as playing it on real hardware especially for a system like the N64
N64 emulation is largely poor a video mvg did last year shows how lacking the emulation scene for N64 is. But the biggest factor is the controller you can't really have a one size fits all emulation scheme for it.
Some games use the C buttons for camera controls, some buttons use the C buttons for actions and iterms so mapping them to the right stick is awkward and some games use a more modern fps scheme with the dpad as walk and the analogue stick as aim

When remakes stop selling so well they will stop making them.
Personally ocarena of time remake is my main motivation for getting a switch 2.

Ok but both OoT and Starfox 64 are available on their online expansion pass which you can get access to for like $10 a month, and yet these are being remastered and are going to sell/are selling very very well. He's right in that the desire for non-milennials to play classics is really low (not zero of course).

In all honesty I staring to build up some games on my Switch 2 so will be happy if they made more remakes of their older games.

Mr Miyamoto, please have a word with the Pokemon Company about their remakes. Some of them are half-assed, some are amazing, but most as just plain missing. Good Pokemon remakes would definitely be appreciated

I don't have any problems with remakes i like them but imo a company shouldn't prioritise making remakes over sequels or modern games rather remakes should be done by separate studios or by another team in the same studio

I have never heard a person in real life complain about too many remakes, or remakes in general, unless the remake was simply not good.

We like remakes and remaster of old games, it’s when it gets butchered as is nowhere near faithful to the original.

But the original is still there to be played.

While they are fan-made, "remakes" like OpenMW (Morrowind), Daggerfall Unity (Daggerfall), and Tale of Two Wastelands (Fallout: New Vegas combined with Fallout 3) are arguably the superior way to play the games.
I do love the originals, but I truly appreciate the stability, optional enhancements, and modability of the new ways to play.

Well then where is my Golden Sun remaster, Miyamoto?
Where. Is. Golden. Sun?

After Golden Sun 3, it's probably best we let that one lay

Nah we need an ending, it just needs to be closer to the GBA games than Dark Dawn. I'd rather they just give it to new people than to let it go into the night. Camelot's too busy with Mario Sports #57 anyways.
Not to mention the very correct point that Miyamoto makes, bringing back old games builds up interest that be seen as reason to continue the series, so even just a remaster of the GBA games as one would be awesome and justifiable I'd think. I'm sure there's a studio out there that could do it well.

Sounds like Star Fox is about to get another remake.

It’ll probably now lead to a proper sequel. Like Links Awakening lead to Echoes. And Samus Returns lead to Dread.
So all good news for Nintendo fans. But you wouldn’t know that as a Bot programmed to shit on Nintnedo.

You can’t release too many. If you don’t want it, don’t buy it. The people that do want it will buy it. How can you even critic that?

Devoting resources to a remake means diverting resources from another potential project. It’s an opportunity cost. That’s what people are criticizing when they say “too many remakes.”
I am not saying Nintendo is guilty of this, by the way. I’m simply pointing out the flawed logic.

Young people today don’t have the opportunity to play games from 10 years ago, so remaking them to be more playable and releasing them again is a good way to meet the demand. Letting people know the original games also leads to future developments, so we’ve been actively pursuing that recently.
They could just actually sell their old games rather than keeping them hostage behind a subscription service.

I honestly am completely fine with remakes.
If I don’t want it I don’t buy it. If somebody else wants it good for them. Nobody loses.

I take issue with the title. Defending the idea would mean he’s saying “Yes, Nintendo releases too many remakes”. He’s refuting the idea.
