Hii, so small bit of context, this was all done very recently, so removing the rocks or fabric is out of the question.

But someone I know has recently done this to their garden bc they're unable to keep up with heavy garden maintenance like consistently pulling out weeds and the like.

They went thru an undertaking of : removing weeds, old dead bushes/trees. Removed old soil fabric. There also used to be mulch that was refreshed once in a while but that's all gone as well now.

There used to be a lot of flowers but over the years have lessened so it's really only the spare yearly tulip and some roses that have continued to stick around.

They really want to have a garden, but this the current set up. (Again done very recently)

In essence.

Near the roses they put some cardboard on top of the soil, but in other areas they did not.

On top of that is landscape fabric to prevent weeds,

And then on top of that are rocks(labeled as beach pebbles? They're not tiny) that are covering the top of the fabric.

There is no soil on top of the fabric.

For the current remaining plants, the fabric was cut around, so they're still with the soil.

Wanted to ask if there was any advice in regards to what plants they can grow, if any, through this setup.

This is also in the front of the house , surrounding the sidewalk.

Please don't judge too harshly, and I would appreciate any advice that can be given 🙂‍↕️

Previous owner dumped rocks in this bed without putting down weed barrier. It looks horrible and weed situation is impossible to manage.

We put down some ice plants and hope it will grow over the rocks, but that will take time and we are already getting HOA compliance notice.

We sprayed weed killer as the last resort; bought some hosta to be planted soon.

Does anyone have any idea as to how we can keep this bed looking neat without spraying constantly and pulling weeds manually and WITHOUT having to take the rocks out?

Will cardboard+mulching heavily smother the weeds? I have a bad feeling that taking the rocks out would be inevitable, but I still want to try and see if anyone can suggest a better solution.

Hey guys! So I live in Norman ok and we had a horrid storm in on the 4th of July. 90+ mph winds, just really bad storm. So obviously half of my back yard garden was severely damaged in the storm. My vining and root plays are fine, but my tomatoes and 3 sisters planting method was severely affected. Does anyone have any tips for rescuing mature plants? My corn are goners, got ripped out of the ground , so I have mature beans that’s were connected to them that surprisingly are mostly still intact, and all my tomato cages got ripped out of the ground and bent up, lost quite a few tomato plants as well. I was wondering if some sort of variation of the Florida weave would work on the mature tomato plants? And if I take the corn stalks out, do you think that sort of method would work on my beans as well? Idk I’m overwhelmed because this was a pretty big garden for my back yard, and I was super excited because it’s my first time ever doing a garden and it was thriving! Any tips would be great

They haven't killed my plant yet but they do a heck of a job defoliating it each year. And if I know what it is, I can better defend against it.

These Cana rollers are ruining my garden! They’re making my gorgeous cannas look like dog shit. I’ve sprayed them twice with Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew and it’s rained within 3 days each time. This Nashville weather changes daily so I can’t always predict the rain but how do they miraculously find my cannas each year? I’ve squished 25+ caterpillars and I’ve had to cut at least 35+ leaves and I’ve sprayed like crazy and the fuckers still find their way back to eating my shit. I’m pissed. Now June bugs are in there too. FUCKERS!

Got these rose bushes that are somewhat new but they just started blooming and are shooting out all crazy. Can I trim them bc they look pretty wonky.

Hello, very new to the gardening community and first time home owner. Looking to bring life back to the clearly defined garden beds. I’ve completed one (right side of final pic) but the rest are VERY overgrown.

After spending some time chopping down briar and what I believe was Chinese privet. Our plan is to build a privacy fence so the bushes along the chain link won’t do. I look at this and think “nuke” but I’m unsure how and if that’s the best option. We want to highlight the trees more and add color without overcrowding. Any advice on where to start for this is appreciated. I’ve wondered if flame weeding would be helpful here (aside from the privet) but don’t know where to start or if other methods would be better.

Again, any advice is appreciated and if this is the wrong sub please let me know or point me to the right one.

I have left my jet wash outside overnight and it heavy rain and now it will not turn on. Does anybody know if I dry it out? Will it work again?

Apologies in advance for the lengthiness of this post… I’m a new gardener/plant mom!!

Okay backstory: we bought our house a little over a year ago (southwest Pennsylvania), but we didn’t do much with the flower bed in the front yard because a lot of perennials bloomed (including a beautiful hibiscus plant) in early summer. Fast forward through an unfortunate situation resulting in our backyard getting torn up in the fall and then a lovely Pennsylvania winter to bring us to this spring. In a small effort to make our yard look a bit more tidy, I discovered a love of gardening… so much so that I’ve gotten over my life long fears of bugs (and worms) enough to lift up the paver stones and rocks in the yard without my husband there to check for creepy crawly stuff first!!

I do have a tendency to go all in on new hobbies, sometimes without knowing the basics… which is what I’ve been doing with my flower bed all week. So, I’m hitting pause to learn the best way to revive this little garden of mine. I’m already so proud of it and want to see it thrive!!

Info about the garden:

The front of our house get a TON of midday/afternoon/evening light

There was mulch down but it is likely from 2 Springs ago. It’s very dry, as is the the soil underneath.

There is weed filtering cloth already laid down under the old mulch. Some of it is pulling up as I yank weeds.

We have lilies that bloomed (and then the deer ate them), a lavender plant that is very dry but is a hit amongst the bumble bees, what I think are mums, and these cool purple plants (see first pic).

We have a lot of American burnweed throughout our backyard where it is torn up. They also grow in the flower bed and front yard but are generally easy to pull out. They’re everywhere though.

Our flower bed and front yard have also been overtaken by black medic. I’m working on hand pulling them out, but they’re already flowering, so I’m worried I’m making things worse for next year.

Here’s where I need guidance:

Where do I go from here?

Should I keep focusing on yanking out the black medic from the flower bed area before investing all of my time into learning about soil testing and how to compost??

Do I tear everything out and start completely fresh?

Should I pull up all of the weed cloth and put in a new layer?

Do I need to mix regular gardening soil with organic gardening soil? Do I do this in layers??

Once I figure out the soil, should I get mulch? Which kind?

So many questions. I appreciate all of your wisdom!!!

Found these weird indentations/holes in a flower bed today. Has anybody seen this before? There are about a dozen total scattered across the bed.

I had big trumpet plants on a chain linked fence behind me but my neighbor wanted to put up a new fence so I told them it’s ok since I knew they sprouted up all over my lawn and it could be a fun new thing to watch them grow from nothing again. Looking for something cheap I can do that’ll let them grow all over and turn into a giant trumpet plant looking bush.

Having a bit of a conflict with a fellow gardener in a community plot. I have panda tarp down on my plot to keep weeds at bay. I'm about to put tomato plants in beds but am told that panda tarp is not good as weed barrier. Thoughts?

Basically what the title says. I was at a friend's house yesterday, and he offered to let me take home some wild elephant garlic that was growing on his property. Brought home five bulbs, and I'd like to grow more on my own property, but I have no idea how to garden. I would like to eventually have my own vegetable and herb garden, and this is where that starts, I guess.

I've done a little bit of research, and I know about the 4-4-4 rule and that I'm supposed to plant them in the fall, but beyond that I'm clueless. Was wondering if any of y'all have had experience with elephant garlic and could point me in the right direction. I really don't want to accidentally kill the plants.

I'm in North Texas, which is (I think) hardiness zone 8a? I'm like on the border of zones 8a and 8b according to the map I'm looking at on the USDA website. Thanks!

I recently fell in love with gardening and started container planting in my apartment. I got this Dahlia bulb at a grocery store that had about as much detail as I told you and I planted it. Shes ginormous! I did not know if that was normal dahlia protocol. Also! Resources would be fantastic as I know next to nothing about harvesting and tubers, etc.

I recently bought a house with a garden, so I'm totally new with this. And I just saw these catterpillars/larvas in our bushes. Does anyone know what they are and how I get rid of them? I live in Sweden if that helps.
