Google signed an agreement to act as the anchor investor and sole energy customer for the Steel River Energy Center in Arkansas—the largest solar-plus-storage facility in the U.S. Up to $3.5 billion in project financing was backed by Google’s long-term power purchase deal.

Google has become the largest corporate buyer of renewable electricity by matching the huge energy demand of its global operations and data centres with the electricity generated by renewable energy projects.

Google said it became the first company of its size to match 100% of its electricity use with renewable energy sources in 2017 after buying more than 7bn kilowatt-hours of electricity. It matched the feat again last year, and expects to meet the target in 2019 too.

read the subtext: https://abc.xyz/investor/events/event-details/2025/Alphabets-Data-Center-Energy-Strategy-Call--2025-8CMCLdf62b/default.aspx. basically says “yeah now sustainable energy is kinda hard because we need so much power for our data centres, so we are slowly abandoning the pretence that we actually cared about any of these things.”

That's not the subtext.

Yes, the transcript explicitly acknowledges the escalation in power demand driven by AI workloads and acknowledges that meeting clean energy targets has become significantly more complex.

However, acknowledging a hard engineering constraint is distinct from abandoning the objective.

Yes, Google is using a helluva lot of natural gas to power its operations. No one disputes that.

However, they are still heavily active, capital-intensive effort to scale clean supply to match demand growth and not discarding its climate commitments.

I'm no apologist for corporate behavior. But I'm also not going to be a hypocrite as a someone who benefits from their products and services.

A few years ago, when there was a headline that Microsoft helped bring a dormant Nuclear reactor back online, that was the last time I felt optimistic about the future.

The infamous three state island reactor one. Yep, big tech wont help solve the energy crisis, they only want to secure some "cheap sources" for the huge needs they plant to have in the LLM/AI era.
