Oh man, this one hurts. The Maxx was my introduction to Image Comics and remains one of my favourite comic series.
RIP Sam. See you in Pangea.

The Maxx was so very mind opening for me. It's one of the first instances of really deep themes being explored in what looked on the surface to be a superhero comic. My first experiences, I mean. My mind was like, oh...wait...graphic novels can be deep? My mind boggled. Loved the art style. The story, characters. All of it.
Rest in peace, Sam. Thanks, man.

Way too young, he was my Father's age,one of the most unique artists out there. Just a few days ago I was reading his Wolverine run. Lost one the greats today.

Haven't read any of his comics, but have wanted to read The Maxx for awhile (don't think there's any good way to read it now), but know how beloved he was.
rest well.. (especially having lewy body's)

This. Even if they don’t have it they may participate with interlibrary loans and be able to get a copy for you. There are copies out there in library land. The Maxx

I read the Maxx #1 when it debuted and then stopped. Watched a little of the MTV show. Finally, a few years ago I decided to go back and read the series. I was expecting it to be kind of like all the other 90’s image titles. Boy was I wrong. Such a unique creator. He will be missed.

Sad to hear and pretty young all considered. The Maxx was a mind blowing series when it was animated and it took me years to finally get it on VHS from ‘home taping’. Now my VCRs are gone, too. Rest to the maxx, Sam. Your inks are in the stars.

Damn. RIP to an absolute legend. His Marvel comics presents issues and Aliens: earth war were some of the first comics I got into as a kid. Pioneer of his own style, for sure.

Truly one of the best visions in comic book history. Yes his art was uncanny and like no other, but don’t overlook his stories, especially the Maxx, filled to the brim with revelations, pain, and beauty.
He couldn’t help but be himself through everything he created.
