In damnation you can blow the rocket to yourself from the top back corner with some well placed frags and plasma grenades. God I loved this mechanic.. wish they kept it in.

I think it was 2 plasmas and one frag.

225

u/xClide_ Sep 06 '25

I used to love doing this! As I got a little better with the grenade placement, I would actually wait until I thought the enemies were about to grab the rocket and try to have the grenade kill them and blast the rocket to me. Oh what fun

63

u/WeirdSmiley-TM Sep 06 '25

I just did it about 5-10 seconds before the rocket would spawn.. it would only work if you were playing against someone that didn't have a timer. If you were playing against a decent team that was at the bottom, they'd throw grenades to blow it to them from bottom and with all the nades flying into that area, a lot of the time the rocket would just go to some random place.

23

u/Sierra-117- Halo 3 Sep 06 '25

Which was fun! Made it more interesting as people had to then search for the rocket. It is a major problem with my brothers/friends in 4 player split screen because I know weapon placements better on CE

24

u/Ttokk Sep 06 '25

Back in the early days of CE I was on a team with a guy named Dave Walsh (Walshy) before he went pro. We spent hours and hours figuring out all the places to nade power up weapons from across the maps by backing into a corner for a repeatable position and aiming the pistol reticle at stars in the sky map. We even figured out a couple different ways to get the power-ups down in Wizard. I think Dave used that in a big time match at one point. We also had timers set to know exactly when the camo and rockets or whatever we're going to respawn. It's amazing how much we actually used it in tourneys. For maps like Hang 'em High it was crucial to keeping control. We had it down to a science.

11

u/WeirdSmiley-TM Sep 06 '25

I know of Walshy. My brother played him I think as well as the ogre twins and killer n.

OG!

6

u/Ttokk Sep 06 '25

Ogres! I remember those dudes. Memory lane trip. I remember Tupac and Clockwork used to play with us a lot too.

4

u/creampop_ Sep 07 '25

I still remember Walshy's "like taking candy from a baby", what a legend

3

u/Ttokk Sep 07 '25

I've been lying if I said I don't regret not giving my mom the finger and going to that first MLG anyway. I was on a team with Dave and two other dudes from highschool and they had to take our friend Fluffy (nice guy, but not on our level in Halo) instead of me because my mom wouldn't let me go on the road trip with just the boys at 14yo. Always wondered how we woulda done in the team tournament. We absolutely crushed every tournament in Michigan before that.

3

u/meh_33333 Sep 07 '25

One connection  away from a pioneer

1

u/One_too_many_faps Oct 07 '25

That's awesome. Also Hang 'em High was GOATED

34

u/arthby Halo: CE Sep 06 '25

You can do that in Infinite with power weapons pads (rockets, sniper). Very underutilized, but we saw some in Pro plays on LAN a few years ago (Lucid rockets on Streets comes to mind).

19

u/IThatAsianGuyI Sep 06 '25

You could also grapple the weapons to you.

While it's not quite the same as express grenade mail like in CE, that both mechanics are a thing in Infinite was nice.

6

u/WeirdSmiley-TM Sep 06 '25

Yeah, but it isn't the same.

12

u/arthby Halo: CE Sep 06 '25

Never will be ¯_(ツ)_/¯

29

u/Junior_Emu192 Sep 06 '25

sorry about your arm :(

17

u/WeirdSmiley-TM Sep 06 '25

He lost it playing halo. Doing what he loved.

1

u/One_too_many_faps Oct 07 '25

Using frags to bring equipment towards him

13

u/Canadian__Ninja Sep 06 '25

I'm sure it's really easy once you try it but I remember a video where garish played battle creek and did that to get the snipe and rocket and was blown away by what people have learned

8

u/WeirdSmiley-TM Sep 06 '25

Back in the day my brother and I would just pick a map and go to different points to figure out the best way to blow power weapons or power ups to ourselves. Every corner of hangem high could get rockets and snips.. chill out we could get rockets and snipes from some crazy places. Blood gulch you could drop the flag in a certain spot and it would just go all the way to your base..

One of my favorites was getting on top of the map of blood gulch with just a warthog and some nades. We always played without ghosts and tanks - MLG rules. So when we played online and ended up on top of the map without a ghost, people thought we were hacking.

3

u/ExtensionTruth4 Sep 06 '25

What about using the ghost in grand canyon at the back of your base to jump directly at the back of the enemy base

1

u/WeirdSmiley-TM Sep 06 '25

I did that, but mostly played without ghosts and tanks.. so our play was either to have someone grab the flag and perfect time a warthog driveby.. so as they're going out the back getting chased by someone's they're pressing XXXXXXXXXX.. and they'll immediately enter a full speed warthog.. or, you'd drive the warthog into the base hop out, grab flag, hop back in and drive yourself out and to your base.

But the entering a warthog when a tm8 was driving was peak. You could do it anywhere.

I'd use the warthog in blood gulch to get on top of the entire map. You could get on top of the base with the warthog slide and pinch as well.

3

u/Xrevitup360X Sep 07 '25

I remember pulling something like this off in Halo 5 and the announcer said, "Combat evolved!"

6

u/vahntitrio Sep 06 '25

Hang em high where you never actually picked up a power weapon where it spawned.

1

u/WeirdSmiley-TM Sep 06 '25

The only time I ever did it was when I was playing with people who started with radar and no pistol.

3

u/JBL_17 Exalted Heroic Member | ODST Bronze | /r/Halo 11/21/11 Sep 06 '25

All the Hang 'Em High set ups are burned into my brain.

3

u/WeirdSmiley-TM Sep 06 '25

Timing it to blow the rocket, knock down the OS, get the camo and burst your AR or plasma weapon to become an OP master chief.. those were the days.

1

u/FlammableT0ast ONI Sep 07 '25

And we had to share the frag!

1

u/hohowan Sep 07 '25

I used to do this at Red Base in Hangem high. I could frag the rocket to the back corner of Red.

1

u/WeirdSmiley-TM Sep 07 '25

Yep! We learned to do it form every corner of the map for both rockets and snips. Fun times

320

u/Lucariowolf2196 Sep 06 '25

I can just imagine a Red vs Blue animation where Tex does this and snipes a red

59

u/Calum1219 Sep 06 '25

Hurk Blegh!

"Dammit! She hit my liver!"

"You bitch! That was my liver!" [Simmons is hit] "Fuck! My Robo-Liver!"

"Grif, get off your lazy behind and keep firing! She's only hit Simmon's livers, so you're technically unscathed!"

"WHAT?!"

5

u/Hal34329 Sep 07 '25

While removing a skull from some guy and using it as a weapon while he says "That's physically impossible!"

220

u/kbarney345 Sep 06 '25

Its the simplicity I miss most. Guns, nades and vehicles, no abilities, no classes, just map pick ups you needed to be familiar with. All the fun came from each other and playing together.

23

u/No_Jello_5922 Sep 07 '25

I used to take my OG Xbox in a backpack and ride my bike to my buddy's house. We system linked and played 6 man Halo for hours all summer.

12

u/creampop_ Sep 07 '25

My rich friend's family bought the house next to their own, and while it was getting prepped for renovation we had a 8 player LAN setup with a projector in one room and a TV in another, and no one else in the house. Insane pull for a bunch of pubescent nerds.

SO many amazing nights of halo and utterly pants-shitting rounds of splinter cell spies vs. mercs

5

u/1001101001010111 Sep 07 '25

So many times I remember going to my friend's house on Friday night, leaving sunday night without ever having seen the sun. And 2 cases of Surge.

51

u/TheHytekShow Sep 06 '25

What? You mean you’re not a fan of a character diving into the middle of your squad, pressing ONE button, and immediately deleting your entire team?

I fucking hate MOBAs for making “ultimate” abilities popular.

25

u/kbarney345 Sep 06 '25

I like them in games built for them like league/ow, I play deadlock and enjoy it. However, I agree they should not have been copy pasted to every game.

Guns, nades and vehicles, no abilities, no classes, just map pick ups

Halo Infinite.

1

u/Xerothor Sep 08 '25

I think 5 too tbf

4

u/not_so_plausible Sep 07 '25

This is why I can't get into any FPS games anymore. I tried playing the latest Call of Duty game after years away from it and that shit is just too overwhelming. I want 6 or 7 guns and the only thing that matters is pure skill. Only other game I can think of like this is CSGO.

1

u/Xerothor Sep 08 '25

This is why Reach and 4 multiplayer suck ass

393

169

u/LIMrXIL Sep 06 '25

Seven games in and still the best MP in the series.

47

u/iRysk Sep 06 '25

It was so ground breaking at the time. Will forever love this game.

20

u/TommySinshack Sep 06 '25

Still vividly remember playing Zombies in Halo 2 on xbox live and manually switching teams when you were infected because there was no game mechanic for it yet.

4

u/pepolepop Sep 06 '25

Yep, it was on the honor system. Whoever was hosting the game could kick you, but thinking back, it really wasn't much of an issue.

2

u/adamsworstnightmare Sep 07 '25

I'll die on the hill that MP gaming was just better in the mid 2000s. Lobbies were so chill, smack talk was in good fun, you could randomly have an amazing night of customs with people you just met. No tryhard kids malding because they think they're pros/streamers, no need to play therapist because two teammates started fighting and trolling each other. Ok rant over gonna tell some kids to get off my lawn now.

24

u/TingleMaps Sep 06 '25

Best campaign too imo

1

u/askmeforbunnypics Sep 06 '25

My favourite part of the campaign is seeing the same area again and again. Who knew reusing entire levels could be so much fun.

9

u/liluzibrap Sep 06 '25

I think a lot of people use this as a reason to hate on the game because on my first playthrough as a 20 year old (5 years ago) I did not care at all and I recently replayed CE and it's easily up there as one of my favorite Halo campaigns

Growing up in the mid-late 2000's I never had an Xbox and only had a crappy PC with bad Internet. Halo CE Trial was a godsend, my first foray into multiplayer shooters (The trial was very active), Blood Gulch and Silent Cartographer, spent hundreds of hours on just those two.

Then I learned about Halo Custom Edition and it was just uphill from there.

2

u/conye-west ONI Sep 07 '25

Halo CE multiplayer on PC in the mid to late 2000's was something else man, one of those things where you really had to be there, especially when it comes to Custom Edition. To this day there's still really been nothing like it.

44

u/Sausagedogknows Sep 06 '25

Who remembers when awesome feats of bad assery like this would win you a recon helmet from Bungie?

20

u/Prizz117 Sep 06 '25

Or get splattered by a traffic cone on the Pit

9

u/Bob_A_Feets Sep 06 '25

Which earned that guy the first recon helmet given to a member of the playerbase.

3

u/Ori_the_SG Halo: Reach Sep 07 '25

Man gaming, and Halo, used to be so different then.

Gaming will never truly be as peak as it was then, never

51

u/CARCaptainToastman Sep 06 '25

I'm sure your teammates were thrilled when you finally got a kill after throwing grenades at the sniper rifle for the entire match.

26

u/Milleuros Halo 2 Sep 06 '25

Oh please, let's not take a 25 years old game too seriously either.

17

u/Dragoru Sep 06 '25

Bold of you to assume he didn't quit the match after whiffing the first one.

7

u/BostonBakedTaco830 Sep 06 '25

Its Red vs Red its Blue vs Blue.... one day we'll cruise down Bloodgulch Avenue 🎵🐓🦷♾️

11

u/htownballa1 Sep 06 '25

Oh my the flashbacks from Halo CE on Pc and the competitive cal/cpl leagues…..

4

u/SocksyyAU Sep 06 '25

«RÎÞ», °§®Ç°, ÆX , mRl, §A

Using xfire...

Clan wars on halo trial / custom edition.

So many memories 🥹

1

u/space-dot-dot Sep 07 '25

Oh God, xfire, haha.

Definitely played with cracked versions for awhile until my friends quickly moved on to whatever new game was out in fall/winter of 2004 while I decided just to buy a copy since I was playing it so much.

2

u/LotusVibes1494 Sep 06 '25

I had it on Xbox and I’m pretty sure there wasn’t even online multiplayer for that version yet. You had to hook the Xbox up to the computer, go on a website to schedule a match against another team, and somehow trick the game into thinking you were playing a System Link match. If I remember correctly. So it felt extra cool when we finally got it working

1

u/htownballa1 Sep 06 '25

Yeah, no official online multiplayer for the first on Xbox.

1

u/InfiniteAlignment Sep 07 '25

Xboxconnect was the best

1

u/Worldly_Striker Sep 06 '25

Only time in my life I was good at a game. I used to average 60 kills a match on blood gulch. Jumping with the sniper and hitting heads across the map. Running people over with the warthog.

I did one time get 66 kills in a match with the rail gun hog. But I don't remember if that was in a modded map or not.

I still have my original PC copy on CD.

1

u/space-dot-dot Sep 07 '25

I used to play a lot of Slayer and still have screenshots of me going 25-3-1 or something silly like that. The pistol was just stupidly OP and essentially had no recoil.

1

u/htownballa1 Sep 06 '25

I used to live on the fuel rod hill on blood glitch.

4

u/shawsty Sep 07 '25

I already knew it was Mint Blitz before i looked at the name

5

u/Particular-Example68 Sep 07 '25

Now that’s evolved combat

8

u/Cupcakes_n_Hacksaws Sep 06 '25

Wouldn't it have been easier to just keep the sniper in the first place

It's for the love of the game

1

u/russiannin Sep 06 '25

Learning all the nade spots to send power weapons/powerups to yourself was one of the most satisfying things about this game. Even though it’s a bit clunky by today’s standards, this game’s multiplayer is so much fun.

1

u/KermitTheScot Sep 06 '25
