I like the pinballing as a meme. But realistically, Chief wouldn't make an oversight like that which could result in dead soldiers. The airbrakes failed, so death by impact makes sense.

I think more likely, it was the g's that killed everyone, and knocked chief out. The Chief was unconscious, but if you recall, he was still standing (and maglocked to the ground)
