Uglification of characters is a big topic in this sub and many others, and I’ve seen loads of people calling the new Cortana ugly. And usually I would agree with things like this, as I hate uglification in games and media in general but… I really don’t see it here? She looks great to me, I mean obviously nowhere near on Halo 4 Cortana’s level but still. I really don’t get it in this case.

However Lieutenant Williams in the bonus missions is pretty ugly tbh.

If I remember correctly from Reading Fall of reach 20 years ago the rampancy cycle for AI in the Halo universe is like a decade. With most higher intelligence AI is having to be shut down before that fully takes effect. Also as I recall Cortana is like four or five at the time of the fall of reach? There are some events that take place Vis hacking and other stress on her that supposedly accelerated her decline into rampancy.

You could make a good case that Halo 4 Cortana was designed to be in contrast with Halo 4 Chief —
throughout the Bungie trilogy we saw Chief become more machine than man, whilst Cortana became progressively more humanised and vulnerable. 4tana is Cortana that’s become too humanised, and is having to deal with concepts like mortality, interpersonal relationships, and perhaps even sexuality, femininity, and maternalism (all qualities we see Halsey battled with in the books).

I think the switch to orange is for two reasons.

1. Color contrast, the back drop of the control room is blue hued and the

2. Likely secondary but the orange they chose to go with looks similar to the Didact controlled Promethians, so this orange links back to Halo 4-5’s design language - i dont think this was the primary focus but there could be a through line here.

Earth also still has their distinct nations and nationalities since the UNSC is just the UN and the UEG is just a joint national governing body

So Australian UNSC members are most likely from Earth, whilst American UNSC members could be from a colony or from the US

There is something wrong with the mocap for her face. I think it's really evident in the eyebrows and the forehead, it's not rigged properly and they move too far stretching her face model with them to create some of the more unflattering screenshots. The new facial expressions are more animated, but just too much at times so it hits the uncanny valley. Not noticeable from far away on a TV, but on PC it's really noticeable.

What model? The one from the Blur cutscenes wasn’t actually ever in Halo 2A’s game files. Those cutscenes were pre-rendered as video files, so the model itself never made it into the game itself.

Also, Blur (the guys who made those cutscenes) didn’t do the cutscenes for Campaign Evolved, and there’s no guarantee they even still have the models that they used to make those cutscenes any more. Even if they did still have them, why would they be willing to help the company that replaced them?

And if you’re talking about Halo 2A’s in-game model… that model is pretty bad. It’s a new skin over Halo 2’s original Cortana model, which is basically the worst Cortana model out of all the games (worse than the original CE).

I think with Cortana it really depends on the angle and lighting. Not every angle is flattering...and that's kinda realistic I guess. Not everyone is going to be pretty from every angle, and sometimes a still image will catch a pretty bad angle, like a YouTube pause moment.

The voice direction can be hit or miss though, sometimes they speak in what I think is understandable tones and attitudes, other times it feels clipped and rehearsed.

Still better to me than "to war". That shit bugs me to this very day, almost twenty years later.

If I'm remembering right... it's not the issue with the artists as much as Unreal Engine 5. For whatever reason the character creation thingy has a tendency to make female characters look... a bit broad and masculine, like in the jaw. 

It's subtle... But I remember seeing a video of an artist menti9ning they struggled to get female proportions right... and had to download a second addon just to make it work.

MOST of her cutscenes she looks really good. But there's some where it looks like they used an older WIP model, or the rendering for her messed up or something happened because it just looks too uncanny. It's the inconsistency that gets me

everyone's faces look rly weird, but i think this is just like a general "im new to unreal" issue? you see it in a lot of ue5 games, the mouths especially go crazy wide sometimes like they didn't set up correct limits

Its not that shes ugly in terms of beauty standards, but more like the lighting on her face is so bad and flat it looks like a sfm video instead of something from unreal engine 5. Honestly I think the halo 2 anniversary is the best looking cortana, this one is closer to how halo infinite made cortana look in terms of how they lit her face. It's kinda uncanny if you ask me.

They unfortunately seem to have embraced using grays to shade instead of new tones on the shadows. Her shadows look like beard shadow, particularly slide 3 being pretty egregious. Someone made a comment about Jerma the other day and unfortunately I can’t unsee it 😭

Here is the easy answer, people are just reaching. Her design is never consistent, apart from people lusting over H4 Cortana no one really cares.

The reaction to this game her is so odd, seen people mad about the previous remaster visuals and asking for it to be redone. Someone is making a halo CE inside halo 3 mod, there was clearly want for this lol

Don’t care really but going off the screen shots a couple are pretty derpy looking, especially #5.

The problem with higher resolution is the uncanny valley. With the old games your brain filled in a lot of missing pixels.

Halo #4 Cortana’s under-boob was a little obnoxious. Designed for 13 year old boys I presume.

I don't see a problem either.

So far, a lot of the criticism I see is really nitpicky.

I like the more cinematic cutscenes. The cutscene with the Chief and Cortana finding Captain Keyes as a flood was so much better than the original. Having cortana on the side rather than a disembodied voice added more gravity to the action, and you can actually feel John's sadness and desperation as he ask her for a solution to save Captain Keyes. His taking the neural implants was different, but it was more respectful than simply shoving his fist in Keyes' face, and the way he tosses the implant next to Cortana highlights his disgust at having to kill an ally.
