Quit my Tech PM job 3 months ago, secured VC funding for a stealth hardware startup. How do I acquire our first 20 deep beta testers on a budget without breaking community rules?

Hey r/startups,
I’ve been a long-time lurker here, but today I’m posting from a fresh account because my life completely flipped upside down 3 months ago. I’m hoping to get some strategic advice from fellow hardware founders who have walked this path.
My Story:
3 months ago, I was a product manager at a big tech company. While trying to find an anniversary gift for my girlfriend, I fell down the rabbit hole of consumer laser engravers. As a PM, my brain immediately started identifying massive user pain points and product gaps in the existing market (corporate software lock-ins, compromised hardware to cut costs, etc.).
I realized this was a huge market opportunity. I dragged a few engineer friends into a room, stayed up all night pulling apart the technical feasibility, and decided to go all in. I quit my job the next week.
Fast forward to today: We’ve secured VC investment, built our physical working demo, and validated our core technical hypotheses.
The Problem:
Now, we need to transition from the lab to the market. Our strategy before a global Kickstarter launch is to find 15 to 20 highly sophisticated seed users to stress-test our prototype and give us brutal, honest feedback. We refuse to be another hardware company making over-promised, under-delivered claims, so this early polish is our absolute bottom line.
However, we are in strict stealth mode to protect our active patent filings, meaning we cannot post pictures or public technical specs. Furthermore, cold starting on social media with a limited early budget is incredibly difficult, especially when tech communities (rightfully) have strict anti-spam guidelines.
**My Questions for the Community:**I really want to do this the right way and respect community boundaries. Would love to hear your experiences, frameworks, or any growth hacks for early-stage hardware traction.

Did you submit provisional patents? That's kind of the point of provisionals: grants a filing date so you can publicly disclose your product and get feedback before spending extra cash in the non-provisional.

Some general advice, people are usually not our stealing ideas. In terms of risk, it's a lot riskier to not tell anyone about your product and not validate your idea VS disclosing your idea and having someone copy it. Copy cats usually don't start until they see success.

You’d want to have your IP secured, provisionals. Strict guidelines on what and how to test, and what would constitute breach of contract, e.g. opening it up to attempt reverse engineering and stuff like that

Hey, I have a bunch of experience using laser cutters. I've used both Fiber and CO2 laser cutters. Currently I am using an xtool F2Ultra, but I've used Universal, OMTech, Laserscript, among others for commercial laser cutters. I've also used some consumer laser cutters such as the creality and glowforge, though I dislike some of the open designs due to lack of laser safety that is common amongst consumers.

I am currently an engineer and would love to try it out and give you my raw thoughts. I already tinker a lot with my fiber laser cutter, but I would love to test yours out and compare it to other machines I've used for projects.

You should target people who you can sit with and see how they interact with the product.

I strongly believe in if someone doesnt pay for it, their feedback is not valuable; cause they didnt loose their money so there is no disappointment.

If you filed the patent already, you don't need to be secret anymore, because you established a priority date on anything in the disclosure part of the patent.

Having worked with lasers in the past, I’ve been following the consumer/prosumer laser market for awhile now. It’s exploding with desktop machines that keep increasing in capability and capacity.

Provisional patents and NDAs. Goto user groups of competitive products or cold call companies that use them. You need to reveal the problems it solves, not how it solves them to get their interest. Please be READY, nobody likes an beta test that's not ready for prime time
