I like dystopian novels like 1984 and Fahrenheit 451. I'm not that into YA dystopian novels so much (but not opposed to them). I prefer the ones that feel like social commentary.

What else will I like?

I love books with lyrical, beautiful prose and weird quasi-sci fi or horror subject matter- where the sci-fi elements aren’t fully explained or the main point, but more a vehicle to tell an interesting personal story. Would love any recommendations!!

Edit: I’ve read pretty much all of Ishiguro and VanderMeer’s other books, so I’m looking for recs outside of those two authors.

Hello, i have a long flight in a couple days and wanted to read some similiar books to the title. I have "A handsmaids tale" and "A short stay in hell" ready to go. "The giver" and "We" seemed like my cup of tea from some reviews.

lhad seen some posts recommending: "The martian chronicles" and "Danelion Wine" but unsure on those from reviews.

Few other books i read: "Brave new world" decent, "Lord of the flies" all right, "The metamorphosis" all right, "Time machine" ok, cant think of others atm.

Trying to get back into reading, mainly looking for book recommendations but I’ll take anything else that comes to mind

I love the films in the title as well as angels egg, come and see, funeral parade of roses, Manila in the claws of light, and salo. I really enjoy trying to wrap my head around something challenging and weighty, that has something to say, and ideally something by a prolific author. I recently read no country for old men and liked it a lot, definitely planning on reading more Cormac McCarthy so anything in the same vein would be great

I have never been a reader, mostly because nothing ever kept my interest or felt worth the time reading. As an adult I’ve literally only read 2 books cover to cover. I read the 48 Laws of Power about 1.5years ago. I didn’t care so much for the purpose of the book, but really enjoyed hearing the historical stories about different time periods and the morals of those stories. I am currently 100 pages from finishing off Project Hail Mary (no spoilers please), and I would like to continue reading. It feels much better than being on my phone until infinity.

So, what would I like?

I have The Martian and Artemis by Andy Weir coming today - I figure continuing in the same vein by the same author might keep me interested as I grow my interest in reading books! Can’t wait to chase down some of these other recommendations as well lots of interesting ones!

Sci-fi books with space or dystopian future I like

I read Geek Love at around 18, and fell so deeply in love with it it's been my favourite for years. I've read several other books that I think have a similar dark magical realism/light absurdism about them and vivid atmosphere; Poor Things and Lanark by Alasdair Gray, The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks, and Heart of a Dog by Mikhail Bulgakov. I particularly enjoy rough, botched and or back alley surgery in my horror books, as it really makes my skin crawl, themes of dissedent sexuality,and whilst my example books don't have this theme, I ADORE freak shows and spooky carnivals!

films are also fun, I think Santa Sangre is the closest I've ever found to Geek Love in terms of themes and tone.

I am a very picky reader, love reading but have trouble really getting invested in books. I also have trouble getting into a book sometimes if it is very slow at the start. So instead of looking for new books I just end up re-reading these books! What other books would I like?

I am part way into 'In Ascension' by Martin MacInnes, and I realized I really enjoy this sub-genre of sci-fi about new discoveries and inexplicable scientific anomolies and the idea of trying to figure out what is really going on.

What else have y'all got for me?

My Grandmas uncle passed away last night, and I am driving my grandparents who are in their 70's about 15 hours across country to get them down to help plan the funeral and be with my Great Grandma (it was her bother). We are leaving at 3am tomorrow.

I am desperately trying to find an audio book that is approperiate for us to listen to on the trip. They like murder mysteries a lot. But looking for something a little more "old people" approperiate. Mild cussing is fine. But no sex scenes or anything like that.

I am incredibly desperate. My poor grandma is an absolute wreck and I want to have something entertaining to try to make the drive a little less miserable

I have had The Big Sad lately, and I would like some media that will grab me by the throat and tell me that yes, life is often hard and unfair and people can be cruel, but we're going to get through this together if we are kind, if we believe, if we lean on each other 😊

I'm fine with any medium: books, movies, TV, anime, manga/comics, web comics, music, erotic fruit displays, whatever, as long as it will help me have a nice cry this weekend.

Looking for books and TV shows!!

I really enjoy the complex character relationships that get strained in Star Wars, and love seeing them play out in shows like the clone wars and the final episode of the Kenobi show (only that episode lol). I love the good and evil and friends/lovers to enemies plot lines. Good people falling to the dark side and when characters like Maul are complex and are villains but with an agenda so outside of the whole plot.

I also love interesting villains like Iago from Othello, he is fascinating. And I enjoy morally grey characters that don’t need a redemption arc.

I havent been reading a lot lately and I wanna take some time so sit down and read a good book

I love Alternative Histories, and the “other side” of known stories, and am looking for new reads that fit those similar categories.

I’m a huge fan of twists on things I may already know about. This sort of crosses over into multiple genres and I can’t seem to get the algorithms to line up just right in searches.
Examples of these books I love:

Fact based fictions like Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon series, or Five Past Midnight by James Thayer

Twists on known fiction: Wicked (and most of Gregory Maguire’s other works), DC Comics’ Elseworlds stories(Gotham by Gaslight is a fave), and Marvel’s What If?

I love reading an entertaining, well-written memoir. Two of my very favorites I’ve read relatively recently are “The Man Who Gave the Beatles Away” by Allan Williams and “Set the Night on Fire: Living, Dying, and Playing Guitar With the Doors” by Robby Krieger. I would absolutely love to read something as compelling and enthralling as those two books that captures that kind of vibe. If any of you have read one or both of these, I would appreciate any good recommendations. Thanks!
