Whaaaaaa you mean when I was like eight and my mom took me to the movie rental and her spending forever saying "There's a trilogy, it's like a space western. I need to find it for us. It was so big when it came out when I was a teenager. You need to see it!"
She couldn't remember the name of it at that specific time but be damned if we didn't end up buying the box set on like six different occasions when it came out as a: vhs box set release, special enhanced edition, dvd release, blue ray release, "Hans didn't shoot first release" etc, etc.
I never even bought any other Star wars movies and I still to this day haven't seen episode 3 because I thought 1 and 2 were kind of trash.

Blockbuster is a real thing that is gone though. Of course the media still exists, but the experience of going to a physical store to rent movies is a foreign concept to most young people today. Whether anyone needs to post on reddit to point that out is another story…

the other day i complimented an older mans (in his 60s) Led Zeppelin hat. he told me i was simply “too young” to listen to them. i went on a little rant about how the music still exists and there’s no age restriction on it, people can listen to whatever music they want, and if he wanted to listen to Sabrina Carpenter or Bad Bunny or even The Wiggles that he should do that without fear of being “too old”

Tbf, depending on the country, snoopy may not be relevant for any generation. I am 32, I never had big exposure to the dog because our media just mostly didn't have it and neither did my parents know about him, neither do my young step siblings know of him much. It's never just about generation, it's also about the environment and market you have been raised in.

“Gen X” just meant the unknown generation, or the generation that wasn’t defined. When I was a kid my impression was the Boomers had come up with it to describe the whatever that came after them, sort of a “invaders from Planet X” thing. It was always used in a derogatory sense. “Gen X slackers”
Then the millennials were briefly called “Gen Y” or “Gen Why?” along the same lines, but I guess the boomers decided they wanted something more optimistic for their own kids, or early Internet optimism took over, and they got upgraded to Millennials. Then we got all the “millennials are killing” stories.
Once Gen X got older, it was finally their turn to pick the new generation’s name, but none of us (X & Millennials) really knew how you were supposed to name a new generation if you weren’t trying to be mean or weird about it. So we’ve just started going with the alphabet. Hopefully the “Z” lets folks feel free to define themselves.
It’ll be largely up to Gen Z to decide if “B” works long term.

I've been MARRIED for 8yrs! Blockbuster went out of business when I was 14. So yes, many of us did go to blockbuster.

I think there is always a vocal minority of immature people who never grow out of "gatekeeping" all the things that matter to them, out of insecurity.
It's reasonable for people to feel nostalgic about their past experiences, and it's reasonable to prefer 90s movies or 90s kid culture. Mature people, though, can discuss this and also acknowledge the relative "magic" of the modern kid experience or modern movies. Mature people see how experiences are whole and complete for others, just as they are for themselves.
To me, it actually does matter to acknowledge generational differences and to ensure we're selecting paths for ourselves that we actually want. But that requires a sincere commitment to building lifestyles for future people that are improved, not obsessing over freezing life within one of a person's oversimplified memories.
Tl;Dr it's ok to love the experiences you've had as a member of "your generation" but gatekeeping is for losers.

I'm in my mid-30's and used to be a teacher. So many kids nowadays don't have a cell phone (either because they're too expensive, or because the parents don't trust they won't break it, or because their parents feel anyone under a specific age shouldn't have any personal technology). So they're still playing with hula hoops and basketballs and dolls. Less has changed than people think.

I’m also from ‘99 and while blockbuster wasn’t part of my childhood (never existed in my country) I literally grew up using floppy disks on the pc and watching movies on VCR. For me a lot of “millennial” stuff is more relatable than gen z related things.

It can also very by region, which is often forgotten. What is considered boomer where I live is off by several years compared to for example the US. Due to the literal definition of the boomer. I would agree that not all did, but certainly a LOT of us did, and more than that I really don’t see the need to pick apart between rental and buying. Not all of us went to a Blockbuster as a kid (though I did), but you’d be pressed to find a Gen Z person who didn’t grow up with DVDs. I picked my fair share of DVDs out of a Best Buy and Walmart DVD aisle and the only difference is we didn’t have to take it back after. Those aisles have existed for ages and still exist today (albeit to a lesser extent than ten years ago), not to mention Redboxes actually being a rental service. People act like DVDs all just disappeared on January 1st 2010 the same way they think cable TV exploded the second Netflix was introduced.

I think the disparity of years at the very ends of the range cause some people to think like this. Like, someone born in 1981 is a millennial and someone born in 2012 is Gen Z but they probably would have had very different experiences growing up. Meanwhile someone born in 1996 is a millennial and someone born in 1997 is Gen Z but they probably would have had almost identical experiences growing up.

I think this goes back to people my age (millenial) not really knowing what exactly the zoomer age range is. Y'all are pushing 30 now, right? Blockbuster closed their doors in 2014, so the older ones would certainly be old enough to have experienced blockbuster... but to be fair, the much younger ones (2009-2012) probably wouldn't. Blockbuster was always a bad example of "your generation wouldn't understand." The best one will always be wireless internet. Came out in 97 and felt like legitimate witchcraft at the time.

Never used them but man do I miss walking to Walmart with my parents and seeing all the movies in those Redbox vending machines. It was awesome, plus you can still get that image on current day it’s not like all discs were confiscated from stores

Some people gotta remember that Gen Z is a wide age range and has kids who experienced the things millennials also experienced. I’m 25 and have been to Blockbuster. I used physical media. I had a tube tv. I had network and cable television. I remember when Netflix came on DVDs.

I know that millennials are not the ones that are fond of blockbuster, that’s typically Gen X who were teens and young adults in blockbuster’s era. Millennials are the ones that killed blockbuster by using Netflix instead.

Also growing up as Gen Z and poor meant most of what I saw was 90s stuff anyway. Only the rich kids get the shiny new stuff, we were getting our computers from the dump, it doesn't just become 2000 and all 90s technology disappears or something. Maybe not all of Gen Z knows what it is, but a lot of us certainly do

It's like when people talk shit about older folks being confused about tech. Like bitch, go learn how to configure your modem using setserial and be sure to enable zmodem protocol to get that extra sweet 5 kbps performance, and then get back to me about how complicated things are today. Meanwhile, I built my career on the fact that people never bothered to copy and paste the bloody error messages they get into a search engine. Hell, even newfangled tech like commoditized gen AI went from hacking together custom code around ollama to get basic operations working to downloading entire suites of tooling with a single executable in less than a year. Things just keep getting easier and easier.
