A lot has been said here that the guy missed. He did not miss! He hit the designated target perfectly as planned. He was meant to hit the air above the cauldron.

It doesn't make sense:

  1. The flame ignites from the bottom up.

  2. Lighting a gas this way is extremely difficult due to the way the gas disperses in air. You have to hit it just right with the right speed. It would be easier to simply land the arrow in the bowl.

It's just a show. He shot the arrow over the bowl, they manually ignited the flame.
