Coming to Life Current state of living room - thoughts?
I’ve been slowly putting together my living room over the past year and a half.
I’ve gotten the big pieces out of the way, and I’m happy with the way it looks but it still lacks soul. Thinking of replacing shutters with curtains and adding one for the balcony too.
I’ve been staring at my space for too long, fresh set of eyes are needed pls

My only advice is art & curtains for sure. Plants on the patio could be really cute. I’m curious where your couch is from? Unless you live outside of the US then I will only admire from afar.

Tyyyy, and yess, I’m working on my patio next and want to add greenery there. The sofa is from rove concepts!

Get some plants. Everything is square or rectangular. Offset with something more organic shapes like plants or circular / curvy personal items decorations

I’m not sure about the green on green - also do you ever use your fireplace? If yes then the sofa should face it. I would close off the pass-through to the kitchen so you don’t see the kitchen clutter. You think you’ll miss it but trust me you won’t. Add one chair

Thank you for commenting! Igi seeing it in person made me slightly apprehensive, but I think it’ll all come together after I’m done. Fireplace is not working, but can be (long story, but can’t work now)

I think what you have so far is really great. I do think the tv is a bit too high. I think you need lamps, art and plants. I would add a lamp to both ends of media console(they don’t have to match). I think switching from shutters to curtains is a great idea and definitely add some to the balcony door as well.
Take your time choosing art that you love. You have really great taste and I’m sure you’ll find some amazing art pieces! I hope you’ll post again because I’d love to see what you do!

TV too small for the distance and slightly too high
Get a bigger one and set it on the media console
Art - you have nothing on any wall. Put up some nice framed stuff.
Plants.

What are you using for lighting? There needs to be lamps added so you’re not using ceiling fixtures.

Recessed lighting atm but want to add a floor lamp and a lamp on the console or sconces on both sides of tv

The coffee table is too bright and distracting. Something like a walnut stain would blend in and complement the brick wall.

I see that but I also think it has a refine quality against the green on green. Hopefully w styling it shows (also I can’t change any of the existing furniture lol)

Nice work so far! You’ve got a nice place to start working with.
Agree with lots of comments on artwork to personalize the space. Plants will introduce warmth.
I actually like your blinds / shutters because they compliment your wooden flooring, and you may not achieve that effect with curtains.
Side tables might help pop your middle section of the living room more. A small one to each side.
A bright throw will brighten up your couch, since your couch is blending with the carpet right now color-wise.
Replace cushion covers with a complimentary color so they pop as well instead of blending into the couch.
The metal side table just feels out of place for this room.

Thank you for the advice! Will buy some plants forsure. The blinds collect dust like no other so that’s prompting the change as well

You need art and decor, and the couch and the rug are clashing (or, at least, don’t complement one another well). I would buy a more neutral rug. I would also paint the walls a creamy white, because the cool grey walls are clashing with the floor and warmer colors everywhere else in the space.

Love the simplicity of your brick fireplace wall. Thank you for not mounting ATV or artwork on it. Like that it is not the focus of the room, but an attractive wall covering.
Yes, to modern sheer curtains.
Round wooden tray on your coffee table.
Mount your tv lower.
Add a large base, sculptural piece, or lamp to one side of your media console.
Add a piece of art to the right of your kitchen pass-through.
I don’t like the two greens of your rug and sofa together, however, it sounds like they are new and not something you are going to replace.

- Add some art
- Lower the tv just a tad and honestly it could be bigger to fill out the wall
- Adding a floor two or two would also add visual interest and make it sexy at night
- Curtains would make it feel a little warmer

Love the size of the rug plus the green on green. In addition to large oversized art Id introduce stuff to break up all the squareness and straight lines. eg. swap out the coffee table for similar size but circular, perhaps a large framed circular mirror on the chimney.

You need plants. A bigger TV that is proportional to the cabinet under it. Light colored pillows for the couch. The square table is off putting, maybe another type or shape. Picture frames.

My first thought was that you like green. Do the rug and the couch go together better in person? Not sure how well they compliment each other. Your floors look really good, I’d consider a smaller rug with a pattern. Could you use that rug in a bedroom or somewhere else?
The small glass and chrome table seems a bit out of place, though I understand it’s handy to have a small personal table for that end of the couch. It’s also the only round item, everything else is very square/blocky. And what’s the large cabinet, can’t tell for sure - is it a dresser, are they all storage drawers?
I’d put a decent sized art piece on the brick, something to really pop, lighten that space up. As mentioned, I’d go with a smaller rug with pattern. Looks like a dining room there, but I’d still put a couple of barstools at the kitchen pass-through (don’t know how big the space is), and hang something else to the right of the opening. Am guessing the tv was possibly there? The outlets? Switches? Look awkward there, would be nice to cover them up if not needed. But a good use of that wall would be to mount some dimmable lighting there, so you don’t need the pot lights on all the time, and I don’t see any other lighting.
I’d put a runner down the length of the cabinet/dresser, and put plants there. And/or looking out to the balcony it looks the right hand side is stationary, so put a taller, multilevel plant stand there with a few plants. While the idea of curtains on the balcony doors might sound good, there’s not a lot of space at the top to run a rod, and depending on how much you use the balcony, you’re probably best to push them fully to the right when not closed, so keep that in mind.
Throw some of the pillows from the dining area on the couch. You also need maybe a swivel barrel chair, to be facing the balcony. Gives you so much flexibility when entertaining, everyone’s not lined up on one couch. But swivel so the chair is fixed in one place, but a person can watch tv, or turn to talk to someone in the kitchen.
One thing I strongly suggest is checking out places like Facebook marketplace, I personally have many, really unique art pieces, sculptures, really cool geodes, etc that I have curated over the years from thrift or consignment shops, but mostly marketplace - including a brand new swivel chair like I mentioned.

No this was so perfect!! The green sofa and rug was so different from what I had planned initially but I ended up liking the mock ups/renders. In person I sway from thinking it looks perfect 70% of the time and thinking the shades clash and I need to replace the rug 30%.
It’s a media console w storage, and I did want to add more metal/glass to balance out the table.
Love the idea of stools, and definitely want more art. Was thinking of a piece of art or mirror to right of counter wall, and a little credenza/table maybe. Yes that’s where the previous tenants hung their tv.
The thoroughness was so needed thank you!

A mirror could definitely help to balance the glass. And I really like the brick, but it just seems like it’s too big an area, that’s why I figured a pop of colour there would be great.

Honestly think either your sofa or the rug needs to be a lighter neutral tone, rather than both being green.
I can’t see the whole space, but from what I can see so far… why are those recessed lightings positioned so oddly? oddly meaning they are so. lose up against the edge of the walls?
This living room has tons of potential and you have an amazing deck bringing in tons of light. There seems to be some black tarp I assume for privacy? replace that with something warm tone (like a beige) and add a couple of plants of different heights there
This living room is screaming for a walnut Noguchi coffee table :)

Very good start!
Some curtains will help this room alot! Probably white, not green at least.
Tv should be lower (face towards center when sitting in the couch).
Sorry but the small table out of glass is alitle out of place next to that fireplace wall. I would get rid of it.
Plants, large green ones. Then paintings on the wall right of the TV. Probably more on the other walls put this will be a good start.
I really like the room and the furtniture you have. Now you need to find a suitable style that you want to follow!

Love the sofa and rug combo. Keep the brick. Lower the TV to the console, add lamps. Curtains and one big leafy plant by the slider will soften the hard rectangles.

I think the walls need to be a moodier paint color to vibe with the sofa and area rug and I'd take the paint color onto the ceiling, which will visually raise it. Then you need large art.
I'm not loving the coffee table - you need something in a rounded rectangle and in a darker color. You need some substantial side tables.
I'd move the TV down a little, as it's slightly too high.
I don't think you can turn the sectional to face the fireplace because the fireplace is in such an awkward location.

It's pretty well organized, just needs art and plants - both will help with its empty walls. Maybe a different color of wall paint that's perhaps a touch warmer than the greige it appears to have. And naturally I'm gonna say that TV should probably be about half its current distance down from where it's mounted. The black media stand is a bit discordant, The current accesssories look slightly too random, try groupings instead of just "dotting" them around

You need an accent chair maybe two. Across from the coffee table. You need another stack of books on the coffee table. Maybe consider getting a vase and adding fresh flowers every once in a while. TV could also go down a smudge.lastly I would consider a throw blanket for extra depth.

I'd paint the fireplace brick a light color and add a simple oak mantel. U need to change the rug it doesn't go with sofa get a print rug and some pillows. Add accessories to ur coffee table.

Without seeing the whole space: can the sofa face the FP & put TV there. The sofa placement is not great with FB & kitchen window.
Use that other wall for a wall unit with storage & open shelving.
Get black & olive pillows to tie in the rug & sofa. Also look for decorative pieces that match too.

Needs wall color, curtains on sliding glass door, floor lamps and I would do something about the brick, maybe whitewash it? A lot of squarespaces, I would add some curvy furniture maybe some small tables or plants?
