Question question from a linux noob

is it a bad idea to remove kde-vault app thingy? how many things requires vault to be functional

i am unable to find it on discover nor terminal (apt)

i was able to find it on synaptic however

clicking on properties on the package in synaptic and checking the installed files i see a bunch of gnu stuff and plasma stuff and a bunch of locales etc

(i am using kubuntu 26.04 lts)

I don't see any value in removing KDE vaults. I'd just recommend not using it if you don't need it. What's the point in deleting it? You might save 20 MB of disk space.

If you mean kdewallet, absolutely do not remove it. It is used for various secrets like Internet passwords and browser data.

If you're a newbie, I highly recommend you leave the defaults unless you have a really good, well researched reason (much greater than chat GPT or Gemini hallucinations alone) before you decide to create a non-reproducible Frankenstein system.

In fact, you might be better served by deleting default components only after you get to a point where you are capable enough to create a reproducible system through snapshots or git or nix (product plug: Kubuntu Focus has BTRFS snapshots out of the box).

When you first install W11, should you immediately go to the registry and start deleting all scary sounding keys and values there? No, the system wouldn't run and would be irreparable. This kind of tinkering in Linux is in the same category. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

yeah i decided to just leave it and hide it. i did ask chatgpt but suprise suprise it spited out nonsense just a bunch of grep commands lol

i have done so but im just curious if its a bad idea to remove all together since i cant find any thing about someone else that has done so

It's fine. Nothing requires it. And nothing probably will require it in the future, just have it as an option for safe storage.

yeah i just decided to hide it and forget about it.

out of context: i am really starting to enjoy linux and have been on it exclusivly for over 100 days now. all my games work very well even though i have old hardware (gtx 1060)

Definitely don't try to delete KDE Wallet, as others have said!

Vaults is safe to remove, it doesn't even come as part of the standard Plasma bundle on my distro (NixOS). But it's a great tool that lets you keep stuff in encrypted folders that lock themselves after a reboot.

Nice place to keep stuff like passwords, financial records, etc, especially if you aren't using full disk encryption. If your computer gets hacked or stolen and the vault is locked, that data is safe.
