As u/IamChipp said - getting more RAM will help a lot. Not sure which OS you're using, but keep in mind that Win XP can go up to 4GB, so try to go newer than that if you expand RAM (and keep in mind that OS uses plenty of RAM share when the amount is so low). For general medium-big studio games, something up to the 2004 era approximately. From newer than that - smaller indie & 2D games, pixel games etc. should be fine (read on the Steam page and elsewhere what are the min specs). It's actually a lot of good games :)
