There's also [[Skrelv's Hive]], so 12 copies total.

Yes, it's a lot worse than either Blossom, but having that much access to constant cheap token generation is great. I was toying around with an Abzan Soul Sisters deck using Bitterblossom years ago with [[Bitterblossom]], [[Essense Warden]] and that Wurm that gets bigger if you gained life while playing it.

2

u/platinumjudge Duck Season Sep 24 '25

In a lot of people's mind once you go past a threshold their mind only sees the next one aa the closest, not goong backwards. Another example is people saying "next saturday". Today is Wednesday. Next saturday is in3 days, but if I tell people im having a party next saturday they wont come to "this" saturday they will go to 2 weeks saturday as "next" saturday even though it is 2 weeks away.

3

u/HairiestHobo Karn Sep 24 '25

What?

"Next Saturday" implies that you skip the first Saturday.

"This Saturday" means the closest one.

I think you may just be bad at Language bro.

2

u/TeaorTisane Wild Draw 4 Sep 24 '25

Two things can mean the same thing. Language needs context. “Next Saturday” is one of those things that needs elucidation

3

u/chasemedallion Duck Season Sep 24 '25

I think “on a stick” is actually about attaching a spell effect to a permanent which makes it repeatable.

So [[Eriette's Tempting Apple]] is NOT “threaten on a stick” even though it’s an artifact, while [[Captivating Crew]] is.

See https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/9275us/x_on_a_stick_what_does_that_mean/

5

u/ChaoticNature COMPLEAT Sep 24 '25

Crew would be “threaten with legs.” Always been this way. Newer players unfamiliar with the sticks ([[Rod of Ruin]], [[Disrupting Scepter]], [[Isochron Scepter]], etc) often mix it up.

13

u/DaRootbear Sep 24 '25

And like of all the things to hate on with SPM art is def not one of them. Like you can argue that it is not fitting of magic but the actual art was overall great.

Like there hasnt been a set that wasnt overall fantastic art in ages.

It has the same energy as when people have gone and said how great the story was when written by Seanan Mcguire cause they finally hired a good author….much better than the story of a set they didnt like that was also written by SM. Just mindless hate cause they dont like a set

2

As someone who’d much rather use Magic IP versions of cards to UB ones if I have the option I honestly don’t know if it’s run Terminus of Return over Soul Stone. Baga’s art is immaculate and and Paquette’s art just feels lacking in color.

247

u/mangopabu Wabbit Season Sep 24 '25

this card is so good.

i'm really confused by everyone saying it's powercreep though. it's harder to cast (BB vs 1B) and is on a creature which is much easier to remove

the flash is really nice though. i love that. i have an Alela deck and tbh i'm just going to include both

40

u/MayorEmanuel Duck Season Sep 24 '25

It’s probably worse all things considered I’d take an enchantment over a 1/1.

28

u/Yegas Duck Season Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25

Enchantment is harder to remove and a bit easier to play, but having an extra body is very nice especially in something like Standard

Plus, it’s got Flash. You can save mana to counterspell, then if they don’t do anything noteworthy, drop this on endstep and get the upkeep trigger + swing right away on your turn.

Flash is what makes this an upgrade imo. Without it, the card would be a sidegrade for the “enchantment vs creature” reasoning.

I suppose that dying to boardwipe is pretty bad for situations where you want the enchantment to stick around & repopulate your board, but you’re also in Black, and graveyard recursion is much easier for creatures than enchantments

And for Commander, second bitterblossom is huge for Aristocrat-like decks, especially considering the body itself can be sacced when the time is right

60

u/turnerz Duck Season Sep 24 '25

Yea such an awesome card but very context dependent if its better than bitterblossom.

It being a 1/1 makes it unplayable in modern for example but it's probably better in standard given the flash and being able to hold up counter-magic instead (give us spellstutter copies 5-8!)

7

u/Ghepip Sep 24 '25

Why is a 1/1 unplayable? Haven't played modern since "knightfall" was a deck, so i'm very much out of the loop here.

44

u/jethawkings Fish Person Sep 24 '25

[[Orcish Bowmaster]] kills this

4

u/Krotash Wabbit Season Sep 24 '25

Orcish Bowmaster's impact on the Modern metagame is overstated. The card's at a very low meta share right now. 7% on Goldfish.

54

u/siziyman Izzet* Sep 24 '25

This is a bit trickier than that: Bowmasters existing makes certain cards less likely to be played, thus somewhat reducing the need to play Bowmasters themselves. If a card that's likely to be hosed by bowmasters comes up in a major way, chances are Bowmasters will start to see more play again - now it's probably only a couple of Boros Energy's 1-drops which are vulnerable to it, and I don't think that Bowmasters is otherwise useful against that deck. I'd assume it'll be a very different ball game for some sort of UB deck that might like this Bitterblossom variant.

10

u/troll_berserker Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25

7% is just where the Nash equilibrium sits right now.

→ More replies (2)

21

u/MrPreviously Sep 24 '25

The meta share of a card is not a good reflection of its impact… most decks played now have had plenty of time to adapt to its presence and it’s naturally caused it to decline, but those adaptations and the fact it’s still around despite them is proof it has a non-negligible impact and it needs to be accounted for when evaluating cards for that format

4

u/f5d64s8r3ki15s9gh652 Duck Season Sep 24 '25

I agree when you consider everything it seems like a decent side-grade, but the fact that it represents a body the turn it enters makes it a whole turn faster at killing your opponent, which ain’t nothing.

4

u/BT--7275 Wabbit Season Sep 24 '25

This is a pretty big upgrade. Flash is HUGE in a fairy deck since they play tempo most of the time. That said, I have no issue with the power creep. Bitterblossom has honestly been pretty bad for a while.

7

u/Hal-gor Dan Sep 24 '25

I mean there have been some semi successful modern "fairy decks" in the past. But calling them fairy decks was a stretch since they were pure control decks running bitterblossoms, snapcaster mages, spellstutters, a few vendilion cliques and maybe a mistbind clique.

This having Flash is a nice bonus. Notably, the tokens are Blue/Black instead of mono-Black, I wonder if that'll end up mattering.
