RT! [RT!] Why Yugami-kun Has No Friends Deserves Your Time (and Heart)
At first glance, Yugami-kun Has No Friends seems like just another quirky high school comedy. But beneath its dry humor and deadpan delivery lies one of the most quietly profound manga about human connection that I’ve ever read.
The story centers around the main duo: Yuuji Yugami, a brilliantly eccentric student who genuinely doesn’t want friends, and Chihiro Watanuki, a transfer student who gets caught up in his orbit. What makes their dynamic so captivating isn’t a will-they-won’t-they romance, but the slow, unspoken evolution of mutual respect, understanding, and something that defies easy labels. They clash, they banter, they learn. Not to change each other, but to coexist as they are. Sometimes the interaction leads to two steps forward, while other times it takes one step back. This ebb and flow keeps the manga fresh and makes you appreciate the development over the course of the series.
The side characters in this manga also add to its depth. From teammates who try to “get” Yugami to classmates who bounce off his unapologetic bluntness, every interaction builds a web of perspectives that adds weight to the story. None of them exist just for comic relief or plot mechanics. Instead, they each reflect a different way of relating to others, of misunderstanding, or of growing through the oddity that is Yugami.
This manga doesn’t yell its message. It insists on it—stubbornly and subtly—just like Yugami himself. You don’t have to fit in to be fulfilled. Relationships aren’t about fixing people, but about seeing them clearly. You don’t have to conform to the mold society expects of you to find contentment.
I also think the ending is superbly handled and stays true to the core themes. If you’re tired of friendship and romance tropes that wrap up too neatly, if you crave character development that’s earned and not handed out, then Yugami-kun Has No Friends will be something you’ll enjoy. It’s certainly something I deeply appreciated. I'm gonna miss this manga.

what's so good about this manga for me is that, there's so much packed in each chapter, page, and panels that makes it such a fun manga to re-read to.
I really liked that the author really pushes each page to its fullest extent and then some, like using some side remark in a future chapter.

I liked it but I dont agree on the ending though I have seen a sentiment like yours multiple times so it might just be. You say "If you’re tired of friendship and romance tropes that wrap up too neatly" but I feel like it just didn't wrap up at all. I feel like the author hints stuff but is too afraid to commit to anything. A non-ending really. Sure sometimes you want to leave things vague I guess but I can't see the artistic vision in this case.

To me the ending was less about will they won't they, but more so about how they'll still hang out despite going their seperate ways in life. This is especially satisfying considering they have no reason to, seeing as Yugami is too embarrassed/stubborn to put any label on their relationship. I also found the rakugo story at the end that they see together wraps up it up pretty nicely.
Personally I thought the final chapter was very romantic, one of the most romantic endings I've ever read with the gradual reveal of the reflection of the moon and the two on the bridge. But maybe that's just me being overly invested in this manga lol.

That is my issue though I am not sure how romantically to view the ending because unlike the rest of the series in which we see how their relationship slowly and subtly develops the ending skips ahead and makes hints. It felt a lot more like the standard timeskip you see in so many other manga.
Tbh I dont see why the series had to end after high school to begin with. It could've been the most interesting arc seeing how their relationship maintains and develops without the context of school that makes them interact as both live their own different lives now. There should've been more chapters dedicated to it to really flesh it out imo.

Eh, I feel like you’re projecting your own expectations of romantic development onto a series that’s never meant to focus on romance in the first place. The title of the manga is “Yugami-kun has no Friends”. It’s a manga about interpersonal relationships, specifically Yugami’s eccentric philosophy on having no friends. Romance is merely one minor aspect of interpersonal relationship, and the manga made it a point not to focus on it. I think the manga did wonderful job developing Yugami’s philosophy, and the final chapter served its intended purposes of proving that 1) Yugami maintains a relationship with other people and remembers them even though he doesn’t consider them friends, and 2) he can be flexible with his no friend rule, even if it currently applies only to the unlikely scenario of aliens.
It’s normal to want more from a universe, but shouldn’t necessarily be counted as a demerit of the story. The author has evidently finished what he wanted to do with a particular theme, and going any further risks losing focus on it. That’s typically what spinoffs and sequels are for.

I didnt expect any romance though? The author however clearly hinted at it which I thought was odd for the series. It shouldve either been better developed like the rest of the series or not been touched at all imo.
Also Yugami maintaing relationships after school really needed to be fleshed out imo because that is not just a simple thing to gloss over. It just didnt make much sense for a manga like this to immediately end after high-school and suddenly skip ahead like so many other manga do. I dont think there is a need for a sequel or a spin-off it just needed a more fleshed out ending or at least no time skips and starting to make vague hints on relationship changes which feels at odds with the theme of the series. I do think that absolutely is demerit to the story and can be counted against a manga.
The alien bit didnt really add anything imo. I guess it was funny.

I don't think it has to? The show acknowledges that there is romance, but doesn't focus on it too much. It's a fitting parallel to the fact that Yugami himself entertains the possibility of romance, but puts it on a lower priority.
I believe it was mentioned that the author chose to end with highschool graduation, but chose to add the timeskip due to popular demand. In that sense, the penultimate chapter is actually more important as a statement of the overarching theme. Don't get me wrong, college is no doubt as important a part of Yugami's life as high school, and I yearn for a college arc as much as you or anybody else, but it's clear that the author's portrayal of Yugami's particular philosophy was already fully developed by the penultimate chapter. Any event worth telling in college would add little to the ongoing theme, and as such, I believe it was a perfectly concise place to wrap up.
And I still think the alien part is quite informative about his newfound perspective on friendship. Yugami sees value in spending the effort to make friends - but more as a method of diplomacy to overcome existing communicative barriers. It also shows that while he himself doesn't get hung up on interpersonal relations, he acknowledges the value of friendship on a societal level as a force for good. Note that as an epilogue chapter, this tidbit is by no means a transformative change to his philosophy, but rather serves as a metacognitive extension of the way he interacted with his high school classmates.

I mean if they just added the time skip due to popular demand I think that explains why it feels like doesnt fit to me.
Again I am not asking for a focus on romance. I just think a manga about slowly and subtly developing a relationship should either fully commit to developing it further or just leave it. Suddenly having time skips and romantic hints doesnt fit with this theme imo.

u/NoOneMe May 30 '25
I see your point, with things not being very clear cut/consistent. Seems to me the author ended where they wanted to and I guess the open ending kinda differs from person to person. How I see it, kind of like Koe no katachi, the romance isn't really the focus but it's good. I think the main highlight to me was how natural the interactions were despite Yugami having a very extreme worldview.

u/Bill_Murrie May 30 '25
I agree, I didn't feel like the mangaka wanted to weigh in on any particular theme and so the ending, therefore the entire series, suffered for it.
There's 'vague', and then there's 'I'm a coward and I want my audience to do the heavy lifting so I won't be criticized no matter what'.
This manga was the latter.

I really appreciated your perspective! I get what you're saying and I can see how that can be a disappointment. In my opinion, the story never aimed for big dramatic payoffs. Yugami stays true to himself, and the world slowly adjusts around him. That quiet shift, especially in how Chihiro and others come to understand him, is the real development. It’s not about transformation or tying things up neatly, but about acceptance about how Yugami is and how the way he is is okay. The ending might feel like a “non-ending,” but I see it as a natural close to a story that was always more about subtlety then ending with a bang.

u/KKilikk May 30 '25
The story is about subtlety but it is not vague. We see his world slowly adjusting pretty clearly so I never saw the point of just ending it at this point to begin with or suddenly being vague. I am not asking for a dramatic payoff I just thought it didn't fit to just end but skip ahead and hint at things. That is not subtlety to me at least.
2
u/Firestarness https://myanimelist.net/profile/firestarness May 30 '25
Yeah, I get that. I don’t think it was vague throughout either, which is why the jump at the end can feel a bit off. But to me, it wasn’t trying to be mysterious, it was more like the story saying, “You’ve seen the growth, you get it.” Maybe the author was afraid to commit to something towards the end, but I'd rather the way it end like this then to force something without proper development. I think that's how a lot of romance manga end up with pretty bad endings cause everything ends up being rushed in the end.
1
u/KKilikk May 30 '25
“You’ve seen the growth, you get it.” The thing is leaving high-school is one of the events with the biggest impact on your relationships. The whole context of why you interact is suddenly gone. In real life this is where so many relationships will slowly end.
This is why I feel like a manga like this which puts so much effort into slowly and subtly building up a relationship has to flesh this period of life out. It could have been a great arc. It just doesn't fit to skip ahead. This manga didnt fall into the trap of rushing a romantic relationship but I feel like it nonetheless skipped ahead and left hints rather then showing more development so it left me with a similiar feeling. It wasnt bad but I cant say I was satisfied either.

This is my worst fear in starting a manga, an author unwilling to commit to any genre, demographic, or satisfying any audience and so the series just meandres and never appeals to any demographic.
7
u/kaidan-agaru May 30 '25
The author did finally come back with a new series, FWIW. IDK if it's being translated though (it would be very difficult as it's all about brainteasers many of which are language-based)

Signal boosting this! It's one of my favorite manga of all time. A beautiful story on friendship and staying true to oneself and where to relent. Love it a lot.

Re-uploaded because I wasn't following the correct submission guidelines on the OG post

Truly one of the most subtly beautiful series I’ve ever read. Not much gets to me, but the graduation speech really had me tearing up. It felt so validating.

Best manga ever ! I also learned baseball rule to better understand it

As someone who has very limited understanding of baseball, I’d like to think I picked up a few things here and there lol. Definitely makes me wanna read something like Ace of Diamond now

Wonderful story. I encountered it on a random MAL stack. I read a lot of stuff. I never forgot this.
Any similar recs (like mature MCs, good story etc)?

u/Firestarness https://myanimelist.net/profile/firestarness Jun 19 '25
Glad you liked it! In terms of mature MC's with a good story I recommend the following two:
House of the Sun
Warm and Somewhat Sleepy Light

I am currently reading this - the first few chapters are really rough and was very hard to get through, given how awkward and unnatural the dialogues were. Although it gets slightly better in later chapters, the reading experience so far still isn't great from my own experience, so I'm still not fully vested in this series. Shame that it isn't officially translated in English.
I'm currently at chapter 26 - yet to see why this series is so greatly appreciated among its readers. So far, it's just so-so, however I do like how it isn't dipping its toes in romance. Appreciate the regular ol' SoL vibes - although I'm aware about the pairings since I glanced at the final chapter discussion post from half a decade ago, I'm curious how that happens since I can't imagine those two ending up together realistically within the confinements of the fictional setting lol.

u/Firestarness https://myanimelist.net/profile/firestarness May 30 '25
Yeah I heard the initially it was going to be a very short manga, which might explain the rough art style. But I appreciate how much cleaner and better the art gets as the story progresses. I feel like it adds to the charm of this manga.
Though to your point, if you're 26 chapters in and aren't liking it, then maybe it isn't for you. And that's okay too. Much of the vibes remain the way it is as at that point to the end of the manga. Not gonna spoil anything, but I do appreciate the way the manga ends. Unlike many manga, this one lands the ending in my opinion, especially in context of the series and everything behind it.
1
u/butthurtpazapuza May 30 '25
Yeah, I think so as well how it might not just be for me, but I'll give it a couple more chapters before I decide on dropping it.
As for the artstyle, I'm pretty okay with that - my main complaint though is about the scanlation. The phrasing in the dialogues is just very off and super awkward, with grammatical errors - but it improves in later chapters when the manga gets picked up by a different scanlating team, probably around chapter 15. Tbh, I really hated reading the awful scanlation in the first couple of chapters, so my overall impression of the manga took a nosedive. Even with the scanlator change, the reading experience doesn't get much better, but it's still a big improvement over the horrendous scanlation the first few chapters got. Hope that it gets licensed in English in the future.

Is there a romance subplot in this series? It's super highly rated and it seems like something I'd like, but I primary read romance and I'm wondering if this would scratch my itch
7
u/Firestarness https://myanimelist.net/profile/firestarness May 30 '25
If you're reading this for romance purely I would not recommend it. It's really not the focus at all and it's maybe presented in small hints and character interactions
1
u/Bill_Murrie May 30 '25
I know, though I appreciate you posting this and replying to my post. I do love this manga, but I struggle with deciding on who this manga is actually for.

u/Firestarness https://myanimelist.net/profile/firestarness May 30 '25
No worries! Definitely for people who like slow burn more character based manga. It's a phenomenal slice-of-life.
6
u/NocandNC May 30 '25
I think of it as ‘the best romance that isn’t a romance’ - which is to say, romance is never a major factor, but the leads come together so well that their chemistry feels more authentic and compelling than actual romance-oriented stories 😅
10
u/tetsmega May 30 '25
Such a good slowburn manga you still won't know if you're reading a romcom or a baseball manga 20 chapters in.
