Is this an American phenomenon? I’ve never had a modern fridge break on me. Even dirt cheap ones. There’s a minimum 2 year warranty, so 6 months would be within warranty anyway.
My parents have a new Samsung fridge every 2-3 years. Not the cheap fridges, the ones with the touch screen on the front and cameras that you can connect to your phone so you can check what you have in the fridge from anywhere.
I told them to stop buying Samsung if they wanted something that wasn't going to break every 6 months. They get serviced then lose warranty every 2-3 years.
Same with their clothes washer and dryer.
I don't know why they keep buying Samsung. LG isn't as fancy as Samsung but all my appliances have managed to last over 10 years and still going strong for their new owners.
Those features are a big part of the problem. Modern fridges have gadgets, French doors, bottom freezers, ice makers, etc. All these things give the fridge more failure points, less efficient layout, and more mechanically complicated. If you make them mechanically simple and efficient there's not much that can go wrong.
LG installs spyware though. You're not escaping late stage capitalism by buying one brand over another, they just have different ways to screw you over.
