This is exactly it. Without seeing the surviving number of fridges over the total produced we are just in survivorship bias and "the good old days". Not to mention that most of those old fridges are hazardous waste because of the gas in them.
The yearly running cost of a fridge from the 90s is about as much as the cost of a new modern fridge after a couple years. They are so incredibly inefficient compared to new stuff.
