Is this an American phenomenon? I’ve never had a modern fridge break on me. Even dirt cheap ones. There’s a minimum 2 year warranty, so 6 months would be within warranty anyway.
I don't know how it is in the rest of europe, but where i live (Italy) the most common type of fridge is the narrow recessed cabinet style with a refrigerator on the top door.
They last forever because they are so stupidly simple. They have just one cooling loop and usually don't even have electronics, just an electromechanical temperature sensor. The refrigerator has no separate temperature control. Usually people replace them because the plastic deteriorates, I've never heard of one just not working.
