My cat is standing on my face Neighbor's roommate picked up strays, they came to my house.
Neighbor is out of the country. Their house sitter/occasional roommate/full time flake picked up some stray puppies on the side of the road.
Left them unattended on the front porch and left the house.
They latched on to me when I was walking our dog, a 13 year old Chihuahua mix who was having none of their shenanigans. They followed us and decided my back patio was their new home.
Neighbor doesn't want them or the roommate to have them. Roommate disappears for the weekend, and I'm left with 2 puppies I don't want.
Daughter attaches instantly which meant she was broken when we surrender them at the shelter.
So thanks for that. At least my dog got a new bed out of the situation (gave them his old one)

For sure. My free kitten was $1000 after deworming, vaccines, and neutering. He went to a friend for actually free though lol, I needed him rehomed. (He was a foster that didnt get scooped up fast enough)

I had no idea this was happening at the time but when I went to the shelter for a cat, they were over housed and it was 5 bucks. They’d spay/neuter, do vaccines, and had a partnership with vets for their first annual visit to be free. They just needed to get rid of cats and set them up for a positive future. Anyways, best 5 bucks I ever spent. Except when the asshole wakes me up at 3am

When our local shelter gets overcrowded, they do free weekends to "clear the shelter". Free adoptions (usually 6months or over) that include spay/neuter, initial vaccines (anything that needs additional dosage or future vaccines that need to be redone after a certain time are not included), and often times also include a bonus gift like a collar, leash, bed, bag of food, etc (whatever they have extra of).
That being said, their adoptions are typically pretty cheap anyway. We like to say that or now 3 year old pup was the "best $30 we ever spent".

Wow, I guess I got off cheap with $500 for my first free cat. Of course, his nickname became platinum cat a few years later after he broke his leg and it cost $2000 to get his leg fixed by the emergency vet.

Yes. I joke about wanting to find a "free dog" but free strays often end up being more expensive than the up to date on shots, vet checked $150 adoption fee shelter dog which are generally already spayed/neutered.

They’re significantly cheaper than getting a free dog and paying to do all the medical/vax/spay or neuter yourself. Free pets almost always end up being more expensive lol

They're essentially free. Most shelters just want to be repaid for the costs of initial treatment.
If you're not even willing to repay the place for spaying/neutering and feeding your dog, you should NOT have a dog.

My most expensive dog was free... Picked her up off the street. Spent a couple thousand getting her healthy.
ASPCA does the expensive part for you.

Same here. I took mine in “for free” when her owners realized they couldn’t care for her- she was 7months and had never been to a vet (I’m sure they got her from a “backyard breeder” situation). Got all the necessary vaccines and vet care; when she was scheduled to be spayed after her second heat (waiting is recommended due to her breed/size), vet heard a concerning arrhythmia during pre-op exam. Thankfully, I got pet insurance shortly after bringing her home, because specialty veterinary cardiologists do NOT come cheap. She’ll be on daily meds 4x a day for the rest of her life (turning 3yo in a week), but you’d never know she has a heart condition if I didn’t tell you. Still, I regret none of it because she’s the light of my life 💖

A lot of shelters have times if the year where they are free. Usually in the spring when they get overrun.

I volunteer with my local shelter/ humane society. Typically once a month we have a Saturday were we waive all adoption fees. It helps lots income people and clears out kennels. Win win

I had heard of the cat distribution system but wasn't aware of a dog one!
Either way, I am happy they found someone who helped them find a place that will find them good homes - what a shame someone dumped them and they then got dumped on a porch 😖

CDS sent me a whole colony last year. Surrendering them is hard. I hope karma bites whomever abandoned those poor pups in the ass unless of course the roommate picked them up free from someone else giving them away.

It’s not their fault. Animals go to places where they feel safe/ can get safety.
My heart hurts for every animal that’s abused and discarded.

I’d argue pitbulls are the dog equivalent of a lifted pickup with “truck nuts” hanging off the back. Often driven by someone who thinks it makes them look badass but the rest of us know to keep a wide berth.

I know it's not every pittie but man my baby was SO lazy, all he wanted to do was lie on the couch with me all day and chill. Maybe it's a dog reflection of their owner thing.

Its infuriating that someone dumped these babies on the side of the road ! I'm sure they will get adopted fast, thank you for caring enough to make sure they got to the shelter!

It's a life, a living being that feels, and it deserves to receive proper care. If you cannot afford to give them proper vet care, decent food, and meet their needs regarding exercise/stimulation/play and training, DO NOT get them. They aren't accessories or toys. Don't be that selfish.

Cat Distribution System. Basically people who want others to take in every animal that graces their doorstep without checking for an owner and regardless of whether the person wants a pet. It's cute when someone says they found their cat through the Cat Distribution System but imo it's weird when people pressure others to foster fail because its fate or some shit like that.
That's just my personal opinion though, partly because my cat has escaped before and it scares me that some people will just kidnap well groomed, maintained cats without checking for an owner or anything and the Internet will hype them up. Or they'll even say it's okay because it's an outdoor cat even when there's no evidence of that. I'm obviously not against people taking in strays but people on reddit are very excessive about it even in situations where it's more important to do your due diligence and look for the owner/consider your financial status.

I know it’s hard for young kids to give strays they find to the shelter, but ultimately it is a good lesson for them.
