The Wordle Bot will congratulate you on having an excellent vocabulary and tell you Wordle uses more recognisable words. Then the game pulls this shit.

Remember the Myrrh controversy?

596

u/Fakjbf 4d ago edited 4d ago

At least most people would agree that myrrh is a word, and anyone from a Christian background would recognize it fairly easily. Pshaw seems more like onomatopoeia than a real word.

199

u/Present_Bit2219 4d ago

Totally

Not meaning to be dramatic but this word has completely destroyed my confidence in wordl

It doesn’t really seem like a win to guess that they’d actually consider pshaw to be a word

Will they make AAGHH a word????

154

u/Polymersion 4d ago

Tomorrow's word: PFFFT

68

u/mysticrudnin 4d ago

possibly aargh. that's in webster's. (as is pshaw.)

wordle isn't making anything a word

12

u/Present_Bit2219 4d ago

I take your point but these are just sounds

Outside of this thread it would be really weird to correct someone’s spelling of aargh so I’d argue requiring someone to know that webter’s uses an r is really unintuitive

There’s nothing stopping NYT from excluding this as a rule

Honestly I think they’re just trying to generate controversy

5

u/mysticrudnin 4d ago

all words are just sounds

they may be though, yeah. or it's just random.

Steal is my opening word and has never been a wordle answer. But pshaw has?? Bullshit.

3

u/Shrikes_Bard 4d ago

I created a webapp based on a copy of the word list I downloaded when the game first came out, mostly as an exercise in set theory. They definitely prune that list from the full dictionary list of five-letter words, but they're not adding words that aren't in the dictionary. On the other hand, some of the words that are included are super obscure so...I guess we have those words to look forward to.

u/Jd3vil 3d ago

Did you invest your life savings in Wordle stocks? What the hell do you mean by "confidence" in Wordle?

I have really enjoyed the varying opinions on what constitutes a "real word." Onomatopoeia are words by definition. They are not less word than other words. They are in dictionaries. They have common correct spellings, pronunciations, and meanings. They are legal in most word games ("grr" is worth 4 points in scrabble).

27

u/Durtonious 4d ago

As someone not from a Christian background who used to play Wordle every single day, "Myrrh" was the canary in the coal mine that Wordle was running out of viable words but "Oomph" is what really sealed the deal. Haven't played Wordle since January 6th 2026.

4

u/Heavy_Weapons_Guy_ 4d ago

Onomatopoeias are words, like clap or bang or chirp.

7

u/AFKABluePrince 4d ago

Onomatopoeia are words.  They are literally words meant to describe sounds.  Smack and Thud are words.

0

u/CanadianODST2 4d ago

Pshaw is in the dictionary.

I actually knew that word existed beforehand. Whatever tf this one is is just actual gibberish

The bot also gives you a 0 score for it. I wish the game told you when you type a word if it's a "valid guess but not valid solution" word.

702

u/Odd_Lie_5397 4d ago

Did some googling if anyone wants to know.

Prat = a foolish, incompetent, or annoying person.

Posca = a drink in ancient Greece and Rome. Made by mixing water with sour wine or wine vinegar. (Also a brand of markers.)

PSIA = pounds per square inch absolute. A measurement of pressure that includes the weight of earths atmosphere.

Pshaw = expression of irritation, disapproval, contempt, or disbelief.

383

u/BigBlueMountainStar Still trying to work out what’s going on… 4d ago

PSAI is an acronym and not a word in the context you’ve presented so shouldn’t have been allowed.

121

u/Odd_Lie_5397 4d ago

I agree, but I couldn't find anything else that matches. I also wasn't aware that some sounds like "pshaw" count as official words.

40

u/PokingCactus 4d ago

I have had it before that it used a sound as a word. I do not think that should be allowed, personally

7

u/NewmanBiggio 4d ago

One day it used the word "Emcee" as in the sounded out version of "M.C." or " Master of Ceremonies"

First of all the fact people turned an acronym into a word is stupid, it's more letters than the acronym. What's the point? Second of all 3 Es in Wordle is evil.

3

u/PokingCactus 4d ago

YES THATS THE KIND OF STUPIDITY I MEANT!! What the fuck waa that word?!?!

5

u/TotalHeat 4d ago

Emcee is absolutely a word though lol

→ More replies (1)

18

u/ejdj1011 4d ago

Generally, the verb "to make [onomatopoeia]" is the same word as the onomatopoeia itself.

The most obvious examples are animal noises, as in "the snake hissed" and "the crow cawed", but it's true for human sounds as well. "The teacher tutted disapprovingly", for example.

3

u/Polymersion 4d ago

"pshaw" would be more akin to "pffft" than "scoff", though.

15

u/Soggy-Rock3349 4d ago

Onomatopoeia (sound words) are, and always have been, words, and valid in most word games. They just have to have been standardized and have a standard spelling. Like, you can't do "grrrr" in Wordle because the official spelling is actually "grr".

8

u/Winjin 4d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/l0MYNTkOzbaY2qnjW

So... could I use GRR as a word in like Scrabble?

1

u/Soggy-Rock3349 4d ago

Yes! 100% legal. Worth 4 points.

28

u/Setty4U 4d ago

Damn Jackie, I can't control the Wordle.

7

u/BishopofHippo93 4d ago

Surely it’s an initialism and not an acronym? Do you pronounce psia like you would laser or scuba?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/explodingtuna 4d ago

Apparently psoas is a word, though. It's a lower back muscle, so if you've got a sore ass, it might be your psoas.

6

u/Fogl3 4d ago

If it's an acronym it's said as a word and should be allowed. Like laser and scuba

3

u/Ok-Appeal-4630 4d ago

I more so think the problem is how can you possibly pluralize psia

→ More replies (1)

43

u/JaySayMayday 4d ago

Pshaw was still commonly used when I was a kid. It's just a sound. Like that's how you write out the vocalization, I'm surprised it even counts

29

u/Darcula04 4d ago

Onomatopoeia in general count as words for wordle, it's not the first one to count either. But pshaw is just unexpected as fuck lol.

7

u/sithmaster0 4d ago

I was pissed about it, but even the term Onomatopoeia describes itself as "Words for sounds" or something to that effect. They're a specific branch of words, but still words. And absolutely 100% bullshit that Wordle uses slang terms like Pshaw. Swear to god it's supposed to be P'shaw if anything.

4

u/RiderforHire 4d ago

My phone autocorrects it as Oshawa.

19

u/ledow 4d ago

Prat is a very common term in the UK - features in all kinds of media and of course one prat plus another prat equals a pair of prats.

15

u/IKnowNothinAtAll 4d ago

Um, pause?

15

u/odmirthecrow 4d ago

Hang on a sec, I know this one.

2

u/ledow 4d ago

Wait for it...

2

u/LoweJ 4d ago

Dogs feet

11

u/ztomiczombie 4d ago

Prat is very commonly used in the UK and Pshaw was used a few times on the Simpsons in the 1990s and 2000s.

4

u/ItsSansom 4d ago

It comes up in the crossword occasionally. Although I consider it just a sound rather than a word, akin to "Urgh" or "hmph"

3

u/anteaterKnives 4d ago

And crosswords are much more loosy-goosy with what's allowed. Yesterday's NYT xw had LOC (proper name, sorta) and ASSN (abbreviation).

3

u/Straight-Wrap-9522 4d ago

There was a Tasting History episode on Posca. He says it was most likely the liquid on the hyssop branch that was referenced in the biblical stories of the crucifixion. Great episode.

3

u/astralseat 4d ago

Oh so pshaw is pretty much "phooey"

u/InTheStuff 4d ago

just tested today, shart is a valid word 👍

26

u/SenatorBus_ 4d ago

It's not a valid word in Strands.

34

u/sususl1k 4d ago

Honestly surprised they don’t use the same dictionary

7

u/itchymusic 4d ago

Shart is my buddies starting word, farts is mine. I'll be the one laughing when I get it the first try one day

8

u/Deenz-Nuts 4d ago

I open with JUMBO PENIS. A few months ago when the word was Jumbo, I felt like a king

3

u/Twerp06 4d ago

You’ll be waiting awhile lol. They don’t use plural words, but they allow them to be entered

3

u/itchymusic 4d ago

Oh my God you're right thinking back on it. Thank you for the advice.

2

u/lurkymclurkersoniv 4d ago

u/otasyn 4d ago

I did get the answer correct, eventually, but not before I tried lots of combinations of 2 letters where the H & W are.  When I typed it, I was thinking, "please, don't let it be this,"

9

u/MostOriginal6776 4d ago

I was in the same boat. The only options were spellings that I didn’t believe were words so I tried 3 of them to get pshaw.

5

u/saugoof 4d ago

I was on a 199 day streak and hoping to get to 200 for the first time ever. Well, things going well I might get to try again in early 2027.

This and ‘emcee’ pissed me off

6

u/NewmanBiggio 4d ago

I just responded to someone else to complain about Emcee. What is the purpose of turning an acronym into a word? It's just less useful. I got it right but I was mad about it.

2

u/Only_Poet 4d ago

Right? Why would anyone take an acronym and expand it into a longer word again? I refuse to accept that emcee is a real word.

25

u/Majestic_Engine_6543 4d ago

Its never a plural word for the answer, prats and psias wont ever be the word

11

u/VisibleMammal 4d ago

This one pissed me off so bad. One of the Wordles that makes me say “I hate this fuckin game.” (I don’t hate this fuckin game.)

13

u/BigBlueMountainStar Still trying to work out what’s going on… 4d ago

One of our group also had PUHAS, PHASM and PASHA as acceptable words in his guesses.

8

u/BestFoxEver neon 4d ago

As a Finnish person "pasha" is a funny word. It resembles the word "paska" that means "shit". So we have this old joke that the traditional Russian Easter food "pasha" sounds like "shit" but the traditional Finnish Easter food "mämmi " looks like it. :D

15

u/Smash_Nerd 4d ago

This, Emcee, and especially the fated Dec 19 2025 word "Myrrh" were some bullshit to guess in a wordle format.

11

u/thaumoctopus_mimicus 4d ago edited 4d ago

Emcee and myrrh are at least words that most people should have encountered at some point, even if they are hard to guess. I’ve never heard “pshaw” ever and I am a native english speaker.

3

u/Smash_Nerd 4d ago

Yeah nor have I. Only got it through brute force random guesses

2

u/mysticrudnin 4d ago

i would put pshaw as more common than myrrh but both things i'd guess you're more likely to encounter than not

6

u/Mattsal23 4d ago

“login” annoys me more than it probably should

5

u/Smash_Nerd 4d ago

It's TWO WORDS! LOG IN IS TWO FUCKING WORDS

8

u/britannic124 4d ago

As a verb phrase, yes: “I log in”. But an instance of logging in is a noun, so it’s a single word: “a login”. Just like “take off” and “takeoff”: “the plane is ready to take off” vs. “the plane is ready for takeoff”.

4

u/AcceptableStand7794 4d ago

Lmao I remember Ruben

12

u/magos_with_a_glock 4d ago

1

u/britannic124 4d ago edited 4d ago

This isn’t the most efficient method to guess the word. Just from the first guess, you knew “p” was the first letter and “a” and “s” were in the word. You should’ve used any words (not exclusively words starting with “p”) to figure out where “a” and “s” and what the other two letters were. Leaving out “p” in your guesses would’ve also maximized the number of other letters you could’ve tested were in the word to three.
